Euroscola 2014 From 24 to 30 November 2014 (inclusive), an eclectic group of

S6 French students representing 11 Glasgow schools attended the Euroscola event in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The establishments involved were:

All Saints Secondary King's Park Secondary

Bellahouston Academy Notre Dame High School

Cleveden Secondary Rosshall Academy

The Glasgow Gaelic School St. Paul's High School

Holyrood Secondary St. Roch's Secondary

Hyndland Secondary

On arrival at the Ciarus hostel, the group quickly freshened up, then met to prepare for our planned activities. The first activity was a role play where each student had to pretend to meet a fellow Euroscola participant 15 years in the future.

As well as visiting the Parliament (the main focus of the visit), our very enthusiastic and motivated students visited the Lycée André Maurois in Bischwiller where they met their French counterparts to practise their survey questions and ask further questions pertinent to their baccalaureate Interdisciplinary Projects. They also attended a class of their choice; performed a traditional Scottish dance with the French students accompanied by Aimee Clark (the Gaelic School) on bagpipes and had lunch in the canteen.

On return to Strasbourg our students undertook the street survey, testing les Strasbourgeois' knowledge of Scottish culture.

The next day (Thursday 27th) the participants carried out le défi de Strasbourg and

were divided into 5 groups to solve a challenge on a particular theme:

(ville historique; ville touristique; ville européenne; ville gastronome ou ville de la

paix). Each group delivered an entertaining and informative presentation on their findings later in the afternoon, addressing cultural and grammatical issues.

On Friday we had one of our most successful Euroscola days ever when our stu-dents excelled in all the activities. Lee Curran (Cleveden Secondary) and Lili Bea Moran (Hyndland Secondary) delivered a concise, informative presentation in French about Scotland and Glasgow. Aimee led them to the lectern playing her pipes. Saffron Dickson (Bellahouston) asked a question to address her concerns about the rise of extreme right wing parties in Europe.

After lunch, the students were divided into 6 groups of approxi-mately 80 participants from 19 European countries to discuss the following themes:

Environnement et énergies renouvelables Lutte contre le gaspillage alimentaire Avenir de l'Europe Liberté d'information et culture citoyenne Migration et intégration Emploi des jeunes.

Saffron; Rebecca McIlroy (Bellahouston) and Anthony Carroll (All Saints) were rapporteurs, while Declan McLean (All Saints) and Andrea Pritchard (King's Park) were présidents for their respec-tive groups. Furthermore, Anthony was in the winning team for the Eurogame and Nicola Storrie (All Saints) and Valérie Pellarin (St. Roch's) were in the winning team of the teachers' Euroquiz.

All of the Glasgow group played a major part in the success of this visit which will no doubt in-spire our students to continue their language learning and, hopefully, encourage their younger peers to do likewise. We must not forget that this initiative would not be possible without the continued and gener-ous financial support of our sponsors: The Modern Languages Support and Development Team, GCC The International Education Office, GCC The SQA

The Franco-Scottish Society. Un très grand merci! (Paul Middleton; Gerry Toner; Lisa Albarracin; Nicola Storrie; Valérie Pellarin and Johanna Boyle)

This memorable day ended with the traditional ceilidh in our hostel attended by our students and their new European friends.

Notre Dame High School sing Italian!

Once again the Choir and singers from Notre Dame High school were involved in

the annual Italian Mass in St Andrew‟s Cathedral celebrated by Archbishop Philip

Tartaglia on the 2nd November 2014. This was part of an IDL project involving the

Modern Languages and Music department. The girls were invited to the reception

afterwards where many Italian Scots commented on their beautiful singing and

lovely accents. In Notre Dame High we aim to promote the learning of Italian and,

indeed, many of the choir members are students of Italian. This event gives them

the opportunity to put into practice the language used in the classroom. Our new

Head teacher Mrs Rosemary Martin came along to the event and was very im-

pressed and proud of the young people. The Modern Languages department was

represented by Miss Giovanna McMahon PT and Mrs Monica Marshall, while Mr

John Sweeney represented the music department.

St. Bride’s Primary visited Celtic Learning Centre in October and Novem-

ber to develop their eTwinning partnership with Ecole Elémentaire Guade-

loupe in Marseilles. Despite some initial „teething‟ problems with the new Twin-

space, the pupils exchanged materials in their native language about

their project (Cross-Curricular Citizenship). The participants covered a

range of themes, including: modern languages; history (WW1); local and national

culture and technology.

To launch the project, each participant sent an introductory message. This was fol-

lowed by devinettes - each pupil uploaded a photo with an accompanying text

and their partners had to match them. They also exchanged posters about their

countries and aspects of la Grande Guerre and a presen-

tation of their schools.

We hope that this partnership

will continue in school and

may lead to other collabora-

tive projects.

On Tuesday the 25th of November some hundred pupils from Cardonald Primary school attended the GFT to

see the French film “Belle et Sé-bastien”, a story is based in the Alps during the Second World War. Pre-paratory work, including some Geog-raphy and history activities to identify French mountain ranges and locate the Alps on a French map, was car-ried out beforehand. The students

also researched neighbouring countries where Jewish families could find refuge with the help of the resistance to escape the Germans. A basic synopsis in French intro-duced cognates, helping participants grasp the background to the story before their visit to the cinema. Follow-up work will include a quiz on the main characters from http://belle-et-sebastien.e-monsite.com/quiz/les-personnages-du-film.html

On the day of the visit P6 and P7 pupils were enthralled by the film

and delighted at how easy it was to

follow, despite some language bar-

riers. They commented on how sad the story was,

but most wanted to adopt a Pyrenees dog by the

end of it! (Maryse Payen-Roy)

A programme of free modern language films for Glasgow City Council schools will soon be available at the Glasgow Film Theatre. Click here for Primary and here for Secondary:

St. Paul’s High pupils are currently

attending Celtic Learning Centre to de-velop their twinspace partnership with with the Collège du Fiumorbo in Cor-sica. To date they have exchanged pho-tos and introductory messages, short paragraphs on their likes and dislikes in their own language to avoid inhibiting initial communication. Gradually, we will exchange resources in the target lan-guage. We hope this experience will motivate our young students, especially adolescent boys, showing them the value of language learning via meaning-ful contexts. For example, last week the class was thrilled to be photographed with the Europa League Cup. This picture has now been uploaded to the official Celtic FC website and our twinspace with descrip-tive reports for our Corsican partners. We hope that this will be a sustainable devel-opment, leading to many more future projects, including Erasmus+ partnerships.

St. Roch’s visit a French Bistro

An adventurous group of our S4/5/6 pupils took part in a collaborative French/Home Economics visit to the Bistro Beau-martin (Glasgow) in October. For the modest fee of £5.00, our pupils enjoyed snails and frog‟s legs as a starter, followed by beef bourguignon or chicken with a pepper sauce as a main course, followed by chocolate extravaganza for dessert. Though the frog‟s legs option was very success-ful, we had mixed reviews for the snails! However, our pupils placed their orders in French which gave them a great opportunity to practise their language skills in a realistic context. The event was so success-ful some pupils have already booked places for next year! (Valérie Pellarin)

Language events in Lourdes Secondary Confucius teachers visit the Modern Languages Department In October, we welcomed 5 Confucius teachers from China. They worked with the Higher French class and a class in S3 and learned some tech-niques and strategies for Active Learning, using Smart boards and Assessment is For Learning. They also learned about Curriculum for Excellence with a view to start teaching in various secondary schools across Scotland.

S2 Spanish breakfast

To celebrate the end of their Curriculum Enrichment Unit in Spanish, Mrs Scott‟s S2 class were treated to churros and hot chocolate. Everyone enjoyed their

Spanish breakfast.

A blast from the past In October, we had a surprise visit from a former pupil, Declan Doyle, currently living and studying in Paris. Declan spoke to the Higher class about his experiences of living and studying abroad, as well as giving advice about applying to do languages at university. Declan also represented Lourdes at the Glasgow Euroscola event in Strasbourg in October 2011 (pictured below with another ex-Lourdes pupil, Emma Mulcahy, in the Lycée André Maurois, Bischwiller). All his former teachers were delighted to hear how much learning French at school has benefited Declan in his life at university and in Paris. Bon courage! (Orla Herron)

Bistro Beaumartin

On the 5th November, S4 pupils ventured out to

the Bistro Beaumartin to sample some French

cuisine prepared by Chef Andrew at his restau-

rant in Hope Street. All the pupils were keen to

try les cuisses de grenouille and les escargots

and they were not as disgusting or as gruesome

as they had anticipated. The best part seemed

to be the buffet dessert – strawberry mousse,

warm dark chocolate fondant, crème anglaise

and as much as you could eat from

the fresh fruit salad. Délicieux!

GFT Cinema trip

Fifty-five S2 pupils attended the screen-

ing of „Tante Hilda‟, an animated

French Film that was showing at the

GFT as part of the French Film Festival,

on the 26th November. The film raised

themes such as the environment and

genetically modified plants and food

and was presented in a quick-paced,

funny way. On return to school, pupils

completed their ‘Fiche pédagogique’ by

reading some texts in French and com-

pleting exercises but also working in

groups to discuss the issues that were

raised in the film.

Amazing experience – Scotland & China Youth Summit, Gleneagles

On Monday 10 November, a group of Bannerman senior pupils attended the Third SCEN (Scotland China Educa-tion Network) China Youth Summit, China and Scotland at Home, at the Gleneagles Hotel. There were over 300 delegates from across Scotland at the Summit, including, Lord Wilson of Tillyorn; Mr Michael Russell MSP (then Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning) and the, Mr Pan Xinchun (Consul General for the PR of China in Edinburgh.) It is very exciting to observe the achievements gained from the friendship, collaboration and mutual under-standing between China and Scotland's Schools, Colleges, Universities, Profes-sions and Businesses.

Our school Chinese Band (Andrew Small, Kyle Nolan, She Kei Wan, Toni McVey and Ryan Gardiner) edited and performed a Chi-nese rock song „My Friend China‟ at the event. As one of Table Chair at the SCEN ambassador‟s conference, Andrew Small gave a short speech after the performance and summarised some key messages from the ambassadors. The feedback we received from the delegates was overwhelming. The convener of SCEN, Judith McClure, even sent her personal congratulations to the school, praising the impact of their perform-

ance and speech on the Summit.

The SCEN Youth summit offered young people a platform to exchange ideas and experiences. It is also a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to find out the important role China and Chinese lan-guage plays in various industries. Our S6 pupils said: „It was truly an amazing experience and we were very fortunate that we could be part of it.‟ P.S The head chef even prepared an amazing banquet for all of us. We loved the food! Many thanks to SCEN and Gleneagles Hotel for this amazing experience!

Several hundred Holyrood S1 and S2 re-cently watched a fun-packed French thea-tre performance. Our pupils really enjoyed hearing the French they had been learning in class in an authentic context and watch-ing their French teachers being “picked on” to become part of the entertainment. Dur-ing the question and answer session after-wards they found out that the main actress was an ex-Holyrood pupil!

During mission week we had bidding prayers in 12 different languages from all year groups. (Louisa MacInnes)

I am delighted to let you know that the Confucius Institute for Scotland‟s Schools has been named global Confucius Institute of the Year at the 2014 Hanban World con-ference. This annual accolade rewards Confucius Institutes for their outstanding contribution to the learning and teaching of Chinese language and culture. It is a great honour for us to have received this prestig-ious award. We would like to extend our thanks to all of you for your continuing hard work towards the promotion of Chinese language and culture across Scottish schools. We would not have been named as Confucius Institute of the Year, if it were not for the on-going support from all of our colleagues, young learners and partners around Scotland. Congratulations to every-one involved for making CISS such a suc-cess. Kind regards,

Katie Hawkins (Project Coordinator, SCILT)
