MNC Global MCC Survey Summary Report 1 October 2014

Executive Summary

As Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) prepare for the election of the next Moderator, the MCC Moderator Nominating Committee (MNC) offers this report on the data and analysis of the MNC 2014 Global MCC Survey to share our understanding of the survey results and the priorities we believe we have received from worldwide MCC congregants and friends of MCC.

In July 2016, MCC lay and clergy delegates from around the world will elect our next Moderator at MCC General Conference XXVI in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. In preparation for the election, the MCC MNC is charged with actively soliciting, recruiting, screening, evaluating and presenting up to five (5) qualified candidates for Moderator to the General Conference. To that end, the data and analysis of the MNC 2014 Global MCC Survey will provide a major portion of the core of information that will be used by the MNC to guide its selection process.

The MNC 2014 Global MCC Survey was made available online through the MCC website from June 23 through August 8, 2014. The survey was made available in English, German, Portuguese and Spanish and consisted of 20 questions with opportunities for written comments, in addition to multiple choice and ranked/rated response options. The survey was publicized via the MNC webpages on the MCC website, on many MCC Facebook pages and in various MCC Facebook groups, in several editions of the MCC Headline News, and via e-mail sent to various MCC distribution lists.

When the survey closed on August 8, nearly 800 people had participated in the survey. Demographic data was compiled through the survey, along with feedback from MCC congregants and friends regarding the primary responsibilities, characteristics, skills and attributes, personal qualities, background and prior experience of our next Moderator. Key takeaways from the survey summary presented in this report include:

• Per the survey respondents, the next Moderator of MCC should be a prophetic and visionary leader; an advocate for justice; an inspirational spiritual leader; a confident and engaging preacher; a leader who inspires faith, confidence, loyalty, and trust; and, most importantly, a person of integrity.

• Per the survey respondents, the next Moderator should have a multi-faceted background. There are seven (7) aspects of background and experience viewed as very important: 1) working with diverse people and settings; 2) gaining consensus and resolving conflict; 3) building and sustaining a healthy organization; 4) managerial skills and interpersonal relationships; 5) biblical and theological knowledge; 6) taking a church/organization to the next level; and, 6) the ability to work in a complex setting.

• In the respondents’ own words, the one thing that will inspire confidence in the next Moderator is if the person is: one of personal spiritual maturity; one of integrity; approachable, down to earth. In addition, the things that are hoped the next Moderator will accomplish are: grow MCC and increase MCC’s visibility.

• In the respondents’ own words, the biggest challenges for MCC are expected to be: global growth; vision for the future; justice issues around the globe. Conversely, the greatest opportunities for MCC are: continued growth of MCC; justice issues; media presence and visibility for MCC.

Survey Objectives and Methodology

The objectives of the MNC 2014 Global MCC Survey were to:

• Engage the diverse voices from around MCC;

• Provide a global perspective that will inform the selection criteria and application materials to be used as part of the application process;

• Identify critical questions to ask of potential candidates as part of the search and selection process.

The objectives of this survey summary report are to:

• Share a summarized version of the survey responses;

• Summarize the findings and observations from the online survey;

• Identify the similar or dissimilar considerations and priorities for the various MCC subpopulations.

The MNC survey was conducted using Survey Monkey. The online survey was made available in English, German, Portuguese and Spanish. Survey responses were collected using two forms of data collection:

• Quantitative data including the ranking and rating of responses and the general frequency of similar type comments

• Qualitative data including participant comments

The survey consisted of 20 questions. Questions 1-5 were closed-ended questions that required either the ranking or rating of a pre-defined list of response choices. Questions 6-9 were open-ended questions requesting open-ended text responses from the survey participants. The remaining questions were multiple choice questions requesting demographic information from the survey participants. In regard to the analysis of the responses to the open-ended questions (Questions 6-9), coding was used to group common phrases and themes inherent in the responses. Coding is the categorization process in the analysis of open-ended text (i.e., the quantifying of comments written in phrase, sentence, or paragraph form), whereby a recurring string of phrases or repeated words are each assigned a numeric value or code that becomes the foundation for a "code frame.” Once the codes are assigned, the code frame is used for the actual coding of the open responses as shown in the coding summary charts for Questions 6-9.

Survey Participants and Demographics

The total number of survey participants was 780. Given an approximate MCC population size of 25,000, this is a very good sample size, resulting in a 99% confidence level with a margin of error of +/-4.55%. A breakdown of the survey participants is as follows:

• 721 participants completed the survey in English

• 27 participants completed the survey in Spanish

• 24 participants completed the survey in Portuguese

• Eight (8) participants completed the survey in German

• 755 participants (97%) fully completed the survey (i.e., selected DONE at the end of the survey)

• 25 participants (3%) partially completed the survey (i.e., answered the required questions, but exited the survey without selecting DONE at the end of the survey)

The survey results presented in this summary report include full or partial responses from the 780 survey participants. The survey participants were asked demographic information on a voluntary basis (Questions 10-20). The demographic results are shown in the following 10 charts:

Results Summary of Responses to Ranking & Rating Questions

Question 1

Which primary responsibilities of the Moderator should be weighed the most heavily when considering candidates for Moderator? (Sorted by total count of Darker Blue + Red responses)

Answered question: 780 Skipped question: 0

Observations • Takeaway: A good administrator who does not exhibit the capacity to inspire would not get high

marks from the survey respondents

• Inspirational responsibilities are the ones that come out on top: prophetic leader, visionary, spiritual leader – not surprising as these are the roles in which the Moderator is most frequently seen “being the Moderator” inside MCC

• The more administrative responsibilities are less frequently cited as being most important – not surprising as these are the roles in which the Moderator is least frequently seen “being the Moderator” inside MCC

• No substantial differences in subpopulations whether respondent attends an MCC church or not; size of church attended; length of time attended; between clergy and laity; or, whether respondent connects to the denomination directly or via their local church

• Difference based on language: Among those who completed the survey in Portuguese, there seems to be more emphasis on being visionary and on being the primary media spokesperson for MCC

Coding Results Summary of Responses to Open-Ended Questions

In the following section, we present the responses to Questions 6, 7, 8, and 9. These questions speak to the ways the future Moderator might inspire faith and confidence, as well as what respondents see as the greatest opportunities and challenges for our next Moderator. Although the priorities that emerge through these questions reveal a great deal of commonality among respondents, through forums, Facebook polls, and other communications means, the MNC will explore many of these areas further in the coming months.

To reiterate, coding was used to group common phrases and themes inherent in the responses to Questions 6-9. Coding is the categorization process in the analysis of open-ended text (i.e., the quantifying of comments written in phrase, sentence, or paragraph form), whereby a recurring string of phrases or repeated words are each assigned a numeric value or code that becomes the foundation for a "code frame.” Once the codes are assigned, the code frame is used for the actual coding of the open responses as shown in the following coding summary charts for Questions 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Question 6

Final Remarks and Next Steps

The MNC 2014 Global MCC Survey provided an opportunity for all who care deeply for the future of MCC to provide their responses to key questions regarding the most important characteristics, skills and attributes, personal qualities, background, and prior experience desired in MCC’s next Moderator. As detailed above, the survey participants envision the next Moderator to be spiritually mature and a person of integrity; a prophetic and visionary leader; an advocate for justice; inspirational; a confident and engaging preacher; a leader who inspires faith, confidence, loyalty, and trust.

By listening to the many diverse voices across MCC, the MNC was able to gain guidance and valuable insight that will help shape the Moderator selection criteria, as well as become part of the MCC global denominational profile. The survey participants were consistent in that the next Moderator of MCC must be a person of integrity. Merriam Webster defines integrity as “the quality of being fair and honest, an adherence to a moral code.” The following Biblical passage (Psalm 26:1-3 NLT) references integrity in this manner: "Declare me innocent, O Lord, for I have acted with integrity; I have trusted in the Lord without wavering. Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart. For I am always aware of your unfailing love, and I have lived according to your truth”. In the coming months through forums, Facebook polls, and other communications means, the MNC will explore this area further, specifically in regard to what does integrity look like and how does one know when someone has integrity.

In closing, the MNC would like to thank those of you who participated in our survey for your input. We would especially like to thank Barb Crabtree for her contribution to the code framing and analysis of the survey data. Her efforts greatly assisted us in the development of this summary report.
