e-Nature Newsletter from Winding Trails - June 2016 Page 1 of 11 Moderate Drought in Connecticut Hi Everyone, If you have been out in the forest, your yard, or starting a garden, you’ve noticed that the ground soil is dry this spring. Based on the National Weather Service precipitation records, Connecticut is in a moderate drought right now. Around the Farmington area, we are about 5 inches below normal since the start of 2016 and about 10 inches below normal since October 1 st of 2015. This issue started last year with low summer rainfall. The small amount of 2015-2016 winter snowfall and spring rains has left many of us relying on our well or local public service to water our plants. The long range rainfall forecasts have not been very promising either. So, what can we do to help our plants and soil? Let’s take a look at how you work in your lawn and gardens to find ways to reduce your water needs this summer. Here are a few suggestions that are easy to implement. In your garden, use compost, worm castings, and mulch around your plants. On a hot day, 70% of the soil moisture will evaporate without some ground cover. Other benefits from these items include insulating the soil, keeping it from becoming hard, and providing nutrients so the plants remain hardy. During heavy rains, the mulch will break the force of the driving rain, reduce possible erosion, and hold the absorbed water. For your lawn, set that mower blade high so the grass shades the soil. Scalping your lawn just allows the sun to get directly to the soil, drying it out quickly. Let the grass clippings remain on the lawn. These break down easily and will return beneficial nutrients back into the soil. Cut regularly so the grass blade is not shocked by a severe removal and no clipping piles smother the growing grass. Finally, avoid overwatering to compensate for the reduced rainfall. This just leaches away nutrients, creates a shallow root system, and causes loss of oxygen in the soil pore spaces which increase the chance of root rot and other diseases. On to a more pleasant topic, this first weekend of June is a great time to jump start your summer with an outdoor hike, bike ride, run, or paddle at one of the Connecticut or National Trails Day events. These events provide great experiences for all levels of skill from novice to expert and allows you to explore some new locations. Scroll down to the Highlights This Month and Other Nature Events In Connecticut sections for ideas. Remember to invite friends and family to share the experience!!! Moderate Drought in Connecticut Hi Everyone,

If you have been out in the forest, your yard, or starting a garden, you’ve noticed that the ground soil is dry this spring. Based on the National Weather Service precipitation records, Connecticut is in a moderate drought right now. Around the Farmington area, we are about 5 inches below normal since the start of 2016 and about 10 inches below normal since October 1st of 2015.
