    RECYCLED MATERIALS

Looking at an object in a different way can inspire many creative ideas.

Through a positive process we can create an alternative use for an everydayobject, for example, a can. In this way, we also help to conserve theenvironment by recycling and reusing materials.

    ART

Art is an activity that can be learned by mastering the necessary skills andtechniques. In a wider sense though, art also refers to creative talent inmusical, literary or visual contexts.

The word art comes from the latin ars, which means ability. The wordrefers to activities that require specialisation, such as gardening or playing

    chess.

Art allows both the people practising it and those observing it to experiencebeauty, feelings or knowledge. Most people agree that art can be expressed through music, dance, painting, sculpture and architecture. These are called the fine arts. Nowadays, cinemaand literature are also considered art, as well as poetry, short stories, plays

    Pregunta 12

What do you observe in the following images of the Alhambra?

What artistic purpose does water serve?

    a)

    b)

THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER IN THE ALHAMBRAWater is a fundamental element in the Muslim world since inArabia there are many deserts and water is scarce. It has threebasic purposes:

Water as a supply for towns: practical purpose.

Water as an element of purification: it is a gift from Allah.

Water as a decorative element: it recreates heaven on earth.

This last purpose of water is the most important when analysingthe Alhambra, because Muslims associated water with gardens. To them, a long pond, for example, represented the axis of amonument. They also used the reflection of monuments in water tomake them look larger.

    LITERATURE, PURE BEAUTY

Literatures any written work with artistic value. It is an art form.Literature transforms reality and provides us with an aesthetical andpleasant emotion. It stimulates our intelligence and our feelings andsensitivity.

Art cannot be physical. For example, if we count the words of a poemand divide them into numbers and letters, we realise that its rhyme(bye-bye butterfly)and its rhythm (intonation) are not really necessaryto make it enjoyable. This is why art isnt physical or scientific: wecannot produce art using formulas.
