If you are unsure about connecting yourbandsaw, don’t take chances: consult theservice dept or a licensed electrician.

EXTENSION CORDS: If used, extensioncords must be rated hard service – grade S –or better. Conductor size must be 12 AWG forcords up to 50 feet in length. Your extensioncord must also contain a ground wire and plugpin. Repair or replace extension cords if theybecome damaged.

C. Word of Caution

In this section we have covered some basicelectrical requirements for the safe operationof your bandsaw. As with the safety rules inthe preceding section, these requirements arenot necessarily comprehensive. Further, youmust be sure that your particular electricalconfiguration complies with local and statecodes. The best ways to ensure complianceare to check with your local municipality orlicensed electrician.

A. Circuit Loading

The motor will safely draw about 12 amps at110V under load. If you operate the bandsawon any circuit that is already close to itscapacity, it might blow a fuse or trip a circuitbreaker. However, if an unusual load does notexist, and power failure still occurs, have thecircuit inspected by a qualified electrician.

CIRCUIT BREAKERS/FUSES: A 15 ampcircuit breaker or fuse should be used for a110V undedicated circuit. The general rule isto use the lightest breaker or fuse that willhold under regular loads. Circuit breakers orfuses that are rated higher may not adequate-ly protect the motor.

B. Grounding

This machine must be electricallygrounded. We have furnished the bandsawwith a plug suitable for use with a grounded, domestic 110V circuit.

Please verify that any circuit you intend to useis actually grounded. If the circuit is notgrounded, it will be necessary to run a sepa-rate 12 AWG copper grounding wire from themachine frame to a grounding terminal in yourelectric service panel. Consult with a licensedelectrician if you are unsure about machinegrounding.

III. Electrical Service Requirements

When placing the bandsaw in your work area, three considerations should be addressed;electrical service requirements, working clear-ances, and lighting and outlets. We’ll look atthe first consideration now and leave the othertwo for the next section.

The bandsaw has a 1 HP motor which is readyfor 110V, single phase operation.

You must wire the motor to the switch.

V. UnpackingIV. Site Planning

Hunter’s Meat Cutting Bandsaw - 5 -

The bandsaw is shipped from the factory in acarefully packed carton. If you find themachine to be damaged after you’ve signedfor delivery and the truck and driver arealready gone, you will need to file a freightclaim with the carrier. Save the containers andall packing materials for inspection by the car-rier or their agent. Without the packing materi-als, filing a freight claim can be difficult. If youneed advice regarding this situation, pleasecall us immediately.

Caution: The meat cutting saw is a HEAVYmachine (106 lbs. shipping weight). DO NOTover-exert yourself while unpacking or movingyour machine – get assistance. In the eventthat your bandsaw must be moved up or downa flight of stairs, be sure that the stairs arecapable of supporting the combined weight ofpeople and the machine.

When you are completely satisfied with thecondition of your shipment, you should inven-tory its parts.

A. Working Clearances

Be sure that there is plenty of room aroundyour saw before cutting. Relocate any itemsthat risk contamination and cannot be easilywashed. Allow yourself sufficient room to runyour saw IN ANY FORESEEABLE OPER-ATION.

B. Lighting and Outlets

Lighting should be bright enough to eliminateshadow and prevent eye strain. Electrical cir-cuits should be dedicated or large enough tohandle combined motor amp loads. Outletsshould be located near the machine so poweror extension cords are not obstructing high-traffic areas. Be sure to observe local electri-cal codes for proper installation of new light-ing, outlets, or circuits.

Driven Pulley

Motor Pulley

Figure 4 shows the V-Belt installed correctly.

D. Pulleys and V-Belt

Pulley alignment and proper V-Belt tensionare crucial to increased belt life and optimalpower transmission from motor to blade.

The motor pulley should already be centeredunder the slot in the stand top. Shift the drivenpulley so it lines up with the motor pulley.

To align the driven pulley (Figure 4):

1. Loosen the setscrew on the back of thedriven pulley.

2. Grasp the pulley on the top and bottom.Shift it along its shaft to line up the V-grooves on both pulleys. Use sight tojudge their vertical alignment.

3. Tighten the setscrew on the driven pulley.

To install and properly tension the V-Belt:

1. Push the motor up to the top of its slots.

2. While holding the motor in place, slip theV-Belt into the grooves in the pulleys.

3. Slide the motor down until the V-Belt isproperly tensioned. You should be able todeflect the belt about 1" at the midpoint.Use moderate finger pressure. Figure 5.

4. Check that the motor pulley is still in linewith the driven pulley. The motor willhave a tendency to twist slightly when it ismoved. This will push the pulleys out ofalignment and twist the V-Belt. Checkand adjust motor position if twistingoccurs.

5. Tighten the motor mounting bolts.

When cleaning (Section XI), you will needto take off and put on the V-Belt. This can bedone without adjusting the position of either

pulley. UNPLUG THE MACHINE FIRST!To remove the V-Belt, pull it laterally fromthe back of the motor pulley and roll the pul-leys forward. The belt will pop off. Figure 4.

To replace the V-Belt, loop it over themotor pulley and as much of the driven pulleyas possible. Roll the pulleys forward and theV-belt will slip into the grooves, just like a bicy-cle chain on its sprockets.

Figure 5 shows proper V-Belt deflection.

G. Meat Grinder

To install the meat grinder (Figure 8):

1. Loosen the mounting bolt at the base ofthe meat grinder.

2. Line up the tang on the saw with the sloton the grinder (similar to a flat headscrewdriver and a screw).

3. Push the meat grinder on the aluminumholder. Some twisting and turning may benecessary to slide it on; it is a tight fit.

4. Put the die in place and screw down thelock. Re-tighten the mounting bolt.

If you don’t intend to grind meat, don’tleave the grinder on the bandsaw. Meatjuices are its lubrication and running drywill cause excessive wear.

H. Stand Enclosures

To install the stand enclosures:

1. Attach 6 plastic tabs to each plasticenclosure using the screws provided.Tighten them so they can still be turnedby hand, without further adjustment witha screwdriver. Figure 9.

2. Position each stand enclosure as shownin Figure 9. Turn the plastic tabs sothey keep the enclosures in place.

A. Blade Tension

To check blade tension:

1. Turn off the power and unplug the saw.

2. Remove the upper wheel guard byremoving the black plastic knob. Theblade guard will come off with it.

3. Lower the guide post so it is not in theway when testing the tension. This isdone by loosening the guide post secur-ing knob. Figure 11. Do not let thepost and attached guide assemblydrop. There is no spring attached.Damage could occur.

4. Press on the face of the blade with yourthumb. Figure 10.

5. The blade should flex about 1/2" with mod-erate pressure.

If the blade flexes too much or too little, youwill experience problems with blade life and/orcutting efficiency.

To adjust the blade tension:

1. Turn the tension adjustment bolt until theblade appears properly tensioned.Figure 11.

2. Check the blade tension again.

The pressure that the blade puts on the ten-sion bolt acts to keep it in place. The tensionshould stay relatively constant. But if you findthat the blade will not keep proper tension, consider adding a jam nut to the bottom of thetension bolt. This will act as a supplementarylock.

If the tension seems correct, make the otheradjustments to the saw and test run it. If theblade does not cut properly, the tension maybe incorrect. Re-adjust tension.

To CHECK tracking:

1. Turn the power off and unplug the saw.

2. Spin the wheels through several com-plete rotations. Watch the position of theblade on the wheels.

3. The blade will move back and forth onthe wheels very slightly. It may also ridecloser to the back of the wheels than thefront or vice versa. This is acceptable fora meat cutting saw. However, if the blademoves back and forth on the wheelserratically or falls off completely, youmust adjust the tracking.

To ADJUST tracking:

Tracking is adjusted by altering the position ofthe setscrews behind the upper wheel. Adjustonly the upper and lower setscrews. Donot adjust the setscrews on the sides.Figure 12.

1. Disconnect the bandsaw from the powersource and adjust the upper guide blocksaway from the blade. See SectionVIII.C.

2. Decrease the tension slightly beforeadjusting tracking. Tracking adjustmentwill automatically increase the tension.See Section VIII.A.

3. If you need to push the top of the upperwheel toward the front of the saw, loosenthe lower setscrew first and then tightenthe upper setscrew.

4. If you need to push the bottom of theupper wheel toward the front of the saw, loosen the upper setscrew first and thentighten the lower setscrew.

Pushing the top or bottom of the upper wheeltoward the front of the saw will correct anytracking irregularities. You must loosen theopposing setscrew before tightening thesetscrew that pushes the wheel the wayyou want. Otherwise, you’ll put tremen-dous pressure on the threads and maystrip them out.

VIII. Adjustments

1. Ensure that the machine sits firmly on thefloor before use. Any “wobbles” must becorrected before operation.

2. ALWAYS wear eye protection whileoperating this bandsaw. All safety equip-ment must be ANSI approved.

3. NEVER attempt to operate your band-saw with dull or badly worn blades. Dullblades require more effort to use and aredifficult to control. Cracked blades willsnap and flail dangerously in the saw dur-ing operation. Inspect blades before eachuse.

4. This machine is not designed to cut anymaterial other than meat and bone.

5. All inspections, adjustments, and mainte-nance are to be done with the power offand the plug pulled from the outlet. Waitfor all moving parts to come to a com-plete stop.

6. DO NOT operate this bandsaw withoutwheel and blade guards in place.

7. DO NOT stick your fingers into the meatgrinder

8. NEVER position body parts in line withthe cut.

9. ALWAYS stand in front (the meatgrinder is at the back and the blade teethpoint toward the front) of the bandsawwhen feeding meat.

10. Cuts should always be fully supported bythe table or some type of support fixture.

11. Blade should run at full speed beforebeginning a cut.

12. When replacing blades, make sure teethface down toward the table. The force ofthe cut is always down.

13. Make sure the blade has proper tension.See Section VIII.A.

14. DO NOT manually stop or slow bladeafter turning the saw off.

15. DO NOT operate the bandsaw at exces-sively low temperatures. Blades canbreak easier if operated at cold tempera-tures.

A. General

1. Use a sharp, high-quality blade.

2. Use the right blade for the job.Your saw comes equipped with a “bone-in” blade - which means it can cut bothmeat and bone. Do not use a “boneless”blade if planning to cut through bone.

3. Partially frozen meat is easier to cut thanmeat at room temperature. At room temp, the meat is so soft that it will tend to plugthe grinder and blade.

4. Allow the saw to cut. Don’t forcethe meat into the blade. Feed theblade with even pressure at a moderatespeed.

5. Maintain your bandsaw in topcondition. See Section XII of thismanual for maintenance procedures.

B. Test Run

1. Completely assemble the bandsaw andperform all adjustment procedures.

2. Check that all fasteners are tight.

3. Make sure that the saw is properly wiredfor the voltage you intend to use.

4. Turn on the machine. Be ready to turn itoff immediately if there is any sign of mal-function.

5. If everything is normal, proceed to PartC and begin cutting.

X. Operations

This bandsaw will make home butchering asimple process. Below is a discussion of pos-sible applications for this saw. Consult your

local butcher shop if you are interested in cut-ting specific types of steaks or chops.

C. Cutting Procedures

1. Determine the steak thickness you want.

2. Position the fence according to steakthickness. If not using the fence, removeit completely. Removing the fence meansone less item to clean.

3. Adjust the upper blade guide assemblyso it is 1/4" from the top of your meat.Adjust the blade guard so it covers anyunused portion of the blade.

4. Set up a large bowl or container to placeyour steaks as they are cut. Packagethem when you are finished cutting.

5. Power up and let the saw reach fullspeed.

6. Feed your meat into the blade slowly andevenly. Do not allow your fingers tocome close to the blade. Retrieve yoursteaks and put them in your bowl or con-tainer.

D. Meat Grinder

The meat grinder operates simultaneouslywith the blade. As you are cutting steaks, anyextra pieces can be put into the meat grinder. If you are using the grinder only, remove theblade to decrease the hazards.

Optional dies (parts #33A and #33B) are avail-able for a small fee. Consult the parts list andservice department for more information.

You can also make sausages by puttingsausage casing over the casing tube and forc-ing the meat into it. Consult your butcher forfurther instructions about making sausage.

Your meat cutting band-saw MUST be thoroughlycleaned after each use!

Bacterial infection is a major concern whenworking with raw meat. Your meat cuttingbandsaw must be thoroughly cleaned withantibacterial soap and water or bleach andwater after each use.

Fortunately, your saw was designed withthese requirements in mind. A thorough clean-ing can be performed relatively easily.

To clean your bandsaw:

1. Turn the power off and unplug the saw.

2. Remove the table, fence, upper wheelguard with blade guard, and columnguard. Wash them thoroughly.

3. Pull the V-Belt off the pulleys (SectionVII.D.) and clean it. Use soap andwater only.

4. Unscrew the threaded studs that anchorthe saw to the stand and remove the saw.The motor is not sealed. Do not allowwater to contact it. Take the saw to aplace where you can thoroughly hose offany meat remnants and do so.

5. Thoroughly wash the saw with antibacte-rial soap or bleach. Do not forget to cleanthe blade. Soap is cheap, lather it up.

6. Rinse the saw off with the hose and dry it.Some parts, such as the blade, will rust ifnot dried completely. Wiping the bladewith vegetable oil will help to retard rust.

Hunter’s Meat Cutting Bandsaw - 19 -

7. Remove the enclosures from the sides ofthe stand. Clean out any spots that havebeen contacted by meat. Pay particularattention to the motor pulley. Be carefulnot to let water get down into the motor.

8. Re-assemble the bandsaw in the oppo-site order it was taken apart.

Do not neglect to clean your saw immediatelyafter use. By cleaning it immediately, you willavoid bacteria, rust, stinky, rotten meatchunks, and a host of other problems.

To clean the meat grinder:

Remove the meat grinder from the saw byloosening the mounting bolt and pulling thegrinder off. Completely disassemble thegrinder and clean it with antibacterial soapand water or bleach and water. When re-assembling, be sure to orient the blade cor-rectly. The grinder will not grind effectively ifthe grinder blade is fitted backward. When themeat exits the auger, it should contact the flat, sharp side of the grinder blade – not theround, blunt side. Figure 16.

Since the moving parts on this machine runon shielded ball bearings, you will find thatthere is very little in the line of routine mainte-nance outside of cleaning (See Section XI).However, “little maintenance” does not imply“no maintenance." This section will cover afew simple but crucial steps for the propermaintenance of your bandsaw.

A. Lubrication

Shielded and pre-lubricated ball bearingsrequire no extra lubrication for the life of thebearings. All bearings are standard sizes. Ifthey wear out, replacements can be easilypurchased from our parts department or bear-ing supply stores.

As for other items on this machine, such asadjustment controls, an occasional “shot” oflight oil is just about all that is necessary. Before applying, however, wipe off any debriswith a clean cloth or towel and spray on thelubricant. Ensure that oil does not get on thepulleys or V-Belts because it could cause beltdeterioration and slipping. Wipe off any spraythat gets on the blade, meat grinder, or anystainless steel cutting surfaces.

XII. Maintenance

B. Miscellaneous

Always be aware of the condition of yourbandsaw before using it. Routinely check thecondition of the following items and repair orreplace as necessary.

1. Loose mounting bolts.

2. Worn switch.

3. Worn or damaged blade.

4. Worn or damaged support bearings orguide blocks.

5. Worn or damaged V-Belt.

6. Any other condition that may affect safeoperation of this machine.
