So you got some great training ... ... NOW WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH IT? The University of the Nations offers some great training courses. Students emerge from the College of Communication having honed their skills working alongside some outstanding teachers. But what comes next? And can you use those skills under the umbrella of Youth With A Mission?

YOU HAVE SOMETHING THEY NEEDMany YWAM missionaries launch out into ministry with very little awareness of their communication needs. To develop partnerships with financial supporters and to ensure good prayer support, they need to be able to tell their ministry stories. For the past 8 years, YWAM has been developing regional communication teams to serve the needs of ministries around the world. There is now a network of Com Teams offering exciting opportunities for creative people to use their skills to strengthen YWAM.

Writers, photographers, videographers, graphic designers and social media junkies can plug into a missions context and use their skills to

mobilize people, prayer and resources for the work of YWAM teams in both urban and rural locations.

Com Teams also offer training to YWAM staff, equipping them to communicate more effectively about their ministries. Studies show that missionaries stick at their work longer when they’re well-connected with others through good communication!

What is a Com Team?

JOURNALISM GRADUATES - Lydia and Agnes both attended the UofN’s School of Field Journalism. Both have joined Com Teams in Africa to use their writing skills in a missions context.

DEGREE STUDENTS - Martijn has been doggedly pursuing his UofN degree from the College of Communication. In between studies he puts his skills to use serving YWAM leaders’ communication needs.

NON-YWAM INTERNS - Jillian was studying journalism at a Christian college in the States. When she heard about YWAM Com Teams she joined for a 3 month internship. She still writes for YWAM.

I learned a great deal about working in communications and ministry ...

by Amanda MercerIntern

My intern experience with YWAM AfriCom [the Com Team for YWAM’s work in Africa] was very beneficial and memorable.

My experience with AfriCom has renewed and strengthened my passion for missions. I have witnessed the way the communicators for AfriCom play an important role on the mission field.

The AfriCom team taught me a lot simply by their example as I worked alongside them as they put out an instalment of their publication for YWAM in Africa. They also taught me on a one-on-one basis, where they oversaw writing exercises of several kinds.

This internship was not one that was completely focused on writing. It was first of all focused on God, and that has helped me to see writing in an atmosphere that has proper priorities.

Overall, I would recommend an internship with YWAM Com Teams. The people are great, the experience is unforgettable and the opportunity is waiting!

COMMUNICATORS IN YWAM

Mission communicators meet in Thailand to brainstorm and plan ways to meet more of YWAM’s communication needs.

Pete, a missions photographer, shows his photos to a Himba woman in Angola. His work helped to connect YWAM’s project there with donors in other parts of the world.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: WHAT YWAM SAYS

“The Com Team made a promotional video for us. It will help us to recruit more workers for Angola and to raise money to buy a property and support our staff and support our projects here.”

— Ismael Ferreira, National Director, Angola

“The communication workshop was awesome, I really enjoyed it! I learned many new things and am challenged to take more time for communication in our work.”

— Tineke Baas, staff member, Family Ministries

“The ministry of Com Teams is not just about written and electronic communication; it is about connecting personally with people who are isolated and building bridges to link them with the body of Christ worldwide.” — Pete Thompson, International DTS Center
