WHAT OPERATING SYSTEMS ARE COVERED IN MOBILE NETVIEW 3.0?
Mobile NetView 3.0 is metered data from our
on-device iOS and Android measurement.
Mobile NetView 3.0 gives clients the ability to
look at app and web data across both operating
systems, with the ability to target individual
operating systems.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE SURVEY‐BASED MOBILE NETVIEW?
We will continue to produce the survey-based Mobile
NetView product side-by-side. We are working with
the data integration team to fuse the survey-based
data with our on-device measured Android and
iOS data. An update on the progress of this will be
shared when available.
ON WHAT DATE DOES NEW DATA GET RELEASED?
New monthly data will be available 15 days after
the close of the month. For example, January 2013
data will be available on February 15th. If the 15th
falls on a weekend, data will be released on the
following Monday.
DOES MOBILE NETVIEW 3.0 INCLUDE iPAD OR TABLET DATA?
No, Mobile NetVIew 3.0 includes smartphone
data only. Our Android meter has been enhanced
so that we can now meter Android Tablets, but we
have not yet put a tablet panel in place.
HOW DO I KNOW THE SAMPLE SIZES FOR A PARTICULAR REPORT?
In the initial release, the color coding for sample
sizes will not be available in the user interface.
We are working on including color coding and
sample sizes in a subsequent release in the next
couple of months. Exact timing will be shared
when available.

WHAT IS MEDIAVIEW?
MediaView is the delivery tool for Mobile NetView
3.0. The vision for MediaView is that it will
become the user interface for all Nielsen Audience
Measurement products. Mobile NewView 3.0
is the first audience measurement product
available in MediaView. Nielsen Online Campaign
Ratings (NOCR) is also available using the
MediaView platform.
HOW MUCH DATA IS AVAILABLE?
Data is available beginning in June 2011 for clients
that have subscribed to that data.
IS ALL DATA AVAILABLE TO CLIENTS WHEN THEY SUBSCRIBE TO MOBILE NETVIEW 3.0?
No. Access to data for historical periods is based
on client contracts. Clients can opt to purchase
historical data.

CAN REPORTS BE SHARED WITH COLLEAGUES/ CO‐WORKERS?
The ability to share reports run in Mobile NetView
3.0 is not included in this first release. Clients will
be able to export the report and send it. Report
sharing is an enhancement we will want to add in
the future.
CAN CLIENTS GET ACCESS TO QUARTERLY DATA INSTEAD OF MONTHLY
Currently, we can only configure access based on
contiguous months, so we can’t set access for
March, June, September and December data for
example. We will work on this as an enhancement
if there is demand for this.

WHERE DO I FIND A DESCRIPTION OF ALL THE METRICS IN MOBILE NETVIEW 3.0?
There is an interactive Help function that
is available in Mobile NetView 3.0. This is
accessible in the top right of the page. The Help
function also provides details of every report and
the user interface.
WHAT IS A SESSION AND HOW IS IT DEFINED?
A session is defined as a continuous series
of browser or application events. A session is
not considered over until we detect 15 minutes
of inactivity.

WHAT CHANGES ARE EXPECTED AS A RESULT OF THE CREDITING RULE ENHANCEMENTS?
Page Views have been a foundation of web
Starting with January 2012 data, there are some
crediting rule enhancements for both Android
and iOS which will impact Time Spent and Visits.
For example, we made a consistent change for
the definition of a session across both operating
systems. A session is now considered to have
ended after 15 minutes of inactivity.
For Android, we are enhancing the way we are
calculating Time Spent and sessions for browser
and applications. We are taking both browser
and application usage into consideration when
calculating a session’s length whereas previously
the browser and app usage were separate. In
addition, for Android applications, a Visit was
counted every time the app was launched for
2011 data; however, it will now be calculated to be
consistent with our session (15 minute) definition.
For iOS, we have enhanced our crediting to
include video usage (when an app uses the Apple
Core Media player) or in-app browsing as part of
our Time Spent calculations. Time Spent for apps
that use video is expected to increase as a result
of this enhancement.

WHAT ARE OUR PANEL EXPANSION PLANS? WILL IT CONTINUE TO GROW?
We have just over 5,000 panelists across both
iOS and Android platforms right now. There are
no immediate plans to grow the panels larger
than this in the near-term.
MOST U.S. CONSUMERS DON’T HAVE SMART-PHONES. WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN TO IGNORE THE VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS WHO USE FEATURE PHONES?
Smartphones – especially those with media
and app-friendly operating systems like Google
Android or Apple iOS – are quickly gaining
in popularity. Nearly 50 percent of US mobile
consumers now own a smartphone and two-thirds
of Americans who purchased a new cellphone in
the past three months chose a smartphone over
a feature phone.
HOW ARE APPS AND WEBSITES CLASSIFIED?
For website classification, we leverage the
MarketView dictionary used across all online
products and we continue to classify mobile-
specific URLs into the MarketView dictionary.
For applications, we have established a
classification tool that populates an app dictionary
(similar URL dictionary maintained in Market-
View). We have created a super-set of categories
for reporting in Mobile NetView 3.0 that cover
apps as well as websites.
WHAT DOES ‘AD SUPPORTED’ MEAN AND DOES IT APPLY TO APPLICATIONS?
The ad-supported classification is for websites
only. By checking the ‘only ad-supported’ in your
report builder, it allows the user to rank the top
ad-supported websites. We currently are not
classifying apps with this flag yet, but will plan to
do so in the future.

WHAT ABOUT BLACKBERRY RIM? DOESN’T YOUR DATA SHOW IT IS JUST AS POPULAR AS THE OTHER PLATFORMS YOU ARE ALREADY MEASURING?
Android and iOS account for nearly 80 percent
of all mobile web and mobile app traffic from
smartphones. That is not to say we are ignoring
RIM – in fact we continue to track RIM’s share of
the smartphone market closely and are investing in
R&D work on a RIM meter.
WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU MEASURING WITH YOUR ON DEVICE METERS?
Our capabilities vary by platform. On iOS we
measure all http: and https: traffic, including all
traffic through the web browser and through apps.
That means Nielsen is able to provide such key
media metrics as reach, frequency and duration.
We can provide the same audience metrics for
Android, with the additional ability to measure
device usage in more detail. For Android we can
report on media metrics like reach, frequency and
duration for Internet and apps, as well as for other
functions on the phone, including camera, dialer,
messaging, email and even charging behavior.

WHY CAN’T YOU CAPTURE THE SAME LEVEL OF DETAIL ON APPLE DEVICES AS YOU DO ON ANDROID?
iOS has limited multitasking abilities and as
a result, it does not allow for a meter to run
on the device in the background as is possible
on Android.
WILL YOU BE ELIMINATING SURVEYS ALTOGETHER?
We consider these two methods – consumer
surveys and on-device metering – to be
complementary and not mutually exclusive. There
are no current plans to eliminate our surveys of
mobile consumers. Over time, however, we will
come to rely less on surveys when it comes to
audience measurement.

WHICH ANDROID OS DO YOU TRACK? HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE INCREASED FRAGMENTATION DUE TO THE ACCELERATED PACE AT WHICH NEW VERSIONS ARE BEING INTRODUCED?
We currently support Android OS versions from 1.6
(Donut) to 3.0 (Honeycomb). Managing support
for the new versions is a challenge that Nielsen
meets with a dedicated team of wireless engineers.
Experts in Nielsen’s Panel Management Center of
Excellence collaborate with our engineering team to
ensure that once a meter is ready, it can be rolled-
out to the panel in a way that maintains high quality.

I THOUGHT APPLE DIDN’T ALLOW THIRD PARTY MEASUREMENT. HOW DID YOU GET AROUND THAT POLICY? DOES APPLE KNOW YOU ARE DOING THIS?
Our measurement solution for iOS complies
with Apple’s terms and guidelines for use.
We support their commitment to delivering
a superior consumer experience and adhere
to Nielsen best practices and policies for
safeguarding consumer privacy.
