The following 170 photos were taken in the summer 2010 by Jan Chipchase as part a project that explored the adoption of mobile banking in Afghanistan. Photos are available as JPG (lower resolution) and RAW (hi-res) files.

They represent a small selection of over 8,000 that were taken by Jan and researcher Panthea Lee during the study, carefully filtered to protect the identity and integrity of the participants, and represent a range of normal situations that our peers in the mobile money space are often trying to communicate.

  • About the IMTFI

The institute annually funds researchers who investigate how the worlds poorest people spend, save and store money, and how their habits are or could be affected by emerging technologies that provide access to financial services, such as: mobile phone enabled banking; funds transfer and payment via new technologies; branchless banking using point of sale terminals.

This project is generously funded by The Institute for Money, Technology & Financial Inclusion, established in 2008 within the School of Social Sciences at the University of California, Irvine through a $1.7 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
