KNOW ~ LOVE ~ SERVE ~ MARY ~ 2018 Prayer has consequences! See how the Blessed Mother
directed these holy men….
There once was a group of businessmen, cloth merchants
by trade, who, in the penitential spirit of the thirteenth
century, gathered together regularly for prayer. They
called themselves The Praisers of Mary.
On the feast of the Assumption, as they were absorbed in
prayer, the Mother of God appeared to them and told them
to withdraw from the world into a solitary place and to
live for God alone, in prayer and penance. They did so,
and from the beginning, the members dedicated them-
selves to Mary, under her title Mother of Sorrows and
called upon her to be their protector.
For years, they refused to take in others who wished to
join them, until a visit from their bishop jolted them.
Again the solitaries gave themselves up to prayer for
light, and again Our Lady appeared to them, and told
them to establish a religious order. She held in her hands
a black habit, while an angel held a scroll inscribed with
the title of Servants of Mary. She told them she had cho-
sen them to be her servants and witnesses, that she wished
them to wear the black habit, and to follow the Rule of St.
Augustine. From that date, April 13, 1240, they were
known as the Servants of Mary, or Servites, adopting
Mary’s virtues of hospitality and compassion. They are
one of the five mendicant, or begging, orders. There are
now branches of Servites for both
men and women throughout the
world, doing Mary’s work. All
seven of the original founders have been canonized. The only lay-
brother, Alexis Falconieri, who did
not become a priest, died at the age
of 110. Their Feast is February 17.

2018 Lenten Projects “The Lenten season is meant to help believers, through a commitment to personal purification,
to relive this same spiritual journey (of the Hebrews in the dessert) by becoming more aware of poverty and of life's uncertainties and by rediscovering the providential presence of the Lord,
who invites us to open our eyes to the needs of our brothers and sisters in need. In this way Lent also becomes a season of solidarity with individuals and peoples …
who find themselves in very difficult situations.” St. John Paul II
Once again during Lent, we can work together as a parish to collect our individual monetary and material offerings for the good of
our brothers and sisters in need. It is important not just to give, but to give a little bit more than what we think we can spare. Such
sacrifices can purify our hearts, bring relief to others, and strengthen the love of God in our own hearts, in our parish life, and in
the world around us. The following projects are featured this year for our parish almsgiving:
Vocations Expo/National Youth Day in Presov, Slovakia: Vocations representatives from seminaries and religious orders in
Slovakia will be traveling to Presov for National Youth Day in July. This mini-World Youth Day is an important place for them to
meet with young Catholics and to foster vocations to the priesthood and religious life. To show our appreciation for the many
priests and religious sisters from Slovakia who have served our parish during its one hundred years, and to encourage vocations for
years to come, we will be collecting monetary donations that will help offset the costs incurred by the religious groups attending
the Vocations Expo. Please support religious vocations in Slovakia by placing your monetary donation in a 2018 Lenten
Offerings envelope (found in the vestibule), indicate ”Vocations Expo/Slovakia” on the memo line, and place it in the
collection basket by April 1.
Streetwork/ Help to the homeless in Trnava, Slovakia: A cup of hot coffee or tea. A sandwich. Help finding a warm place to
sleep. Pairs of university student-volunteers in the city of Trnava, Slovakia, are on the streets seeking out the homeless,
befriending them, and meeting their most immediate needs. They are part of Streetwork, a project initiated by the Archdiocesan
Charities two years ago, in collaboration with the city and local universities, to bring both short- and long-term relief to the
homeless. Along with immediate physical needs, the homeless are being helped to connect with the city’s healthcare and social
services to improve their lives; and students are putting into practice compassion for some of their city’s most marginalized souls.
Your monetary donation will help to purchase necessary supplies for the student-volunteers, to provide for their training and
support, and to further develop this project. Please help to bring comprehensive assistance to the homeless of Trnava by placing
your monetary donation in a 2018 Lenten Offerings envelope (found in the vestibule), indicate “Streetwork/ Homeless in
Slovakia” and putting it in the weekend collection basket or dropping it off in the parish office by April 1.
Replace Convent Roof: The St. Therese Convent of the Contemplative Sisters of St. John is in desperate need of a new roof. This
large facility, which houses 8 sisters, workshops for the many handcrafts they produce to support themselves, a novitiate, and
retreat space, has been badly damaged by the high winds of central Illinois. The sisters must raise $90,000 to install a sturdier roof.
Please help the sisters by placing your monetary donation in a 2018 Lenten Offerings envelope (found in the vestibule),
indicate “Sisters of St. John” on the memo line, and place it in the collection basket by April 1.
Families in Need/St. Matthew’s Chapter of St. Vincent de Paul: St. Matthew’s Parish on Detroit’s east side is neighbor to
many low-income, financially-struggling families. The St. Vincent de Paul chapter at the parish provides for the needs of those
who face hardships such as the loss of a job, raising a family on a minimum wage income, disability or illness. At this time of year,
families are faced with high utility bills and seek assistance with other necessities, such as paying rent. Your monetary donation
will help St. Vincent de Paul give financial help or purchase a needed item, such as a refrigerator or stove, a bed, crib or other
furniture. Place your donation in a 2018 Lenten Offerings envelope, found in the vestibule, indicate “St. Matthew Families in
Need” on the memo line, and place it in the collection basket by April 1. Wee-Care Baby Shower: One of our parish families is hosting a “mini-baby shower” for Right to Life/Lifespan’s Wee-Care
Pregnancy Help Center which supplies struggling new mothers with much needed clothing and other baby-care items. The shower
will take place in the Fr. Mikus Hall after the Saturday evening and all Sunday Holy Masses on March 10 & 11. Bring your
donation of new or gently-used baby clothing sized newborn to 2, diapers up to size 4, baby-care products, or gift cards to
the Parish Hall after Mass and stay for cookies and punch, live music and fellowship.
Clothing for the Homeless at St. Leo’s: Our thoughts may be turning to spring, but the homeless men and women in Detroit are
still exposed to winter’s cold and snow each day. Our collection of warm clothing for the Missionaries of Charity to distribute
among the homeless people in the neighborhood of St. Leo’s continues through Lent. We will be collecting new and gently-used
warm clothing for them to distribute. Blue jeans and thermal tops and bottoms are especially needed, as well as shirts,
hoodies, heavy winter coats and winter boots. Please place your donations in the box marked Clothing Collection located in
the coatroom.
Sacred Heart Food Pantry: Please consider making a donation of non-perishable food items for the hungry families served by
the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at Sacred Heart Parish in Imlay City. In order to support our less fortunate brothers and sisters
in northern Macomb County, we will be collecting non-perishable food items, such as rice, beans, cereal, pasta and canned
goods. Please place your donations in the box marked Food Collection located in the vestibule coatroom by March 26.

Other members are traveling and will be gone for five to six weeks. If you like to sing, we would love to have you join our choir. We need members now. Please consider joining us.

Nicaragua Mission Trip Info. Mtg. Information Meeting * Sunday, February 18
Thanks to the generosity of Fr. Libor, the Men’s Club, Knights of Columbus, and the parishioners from Ss. Cyril and Methodius, we will be returning to Nicaragua in 2018. We will again be repairing roofs, painting, and building up Paul Rush's Guadalupe Garden's Mission Center, in San Marcos. Some of us will be visiting successful Nicaraguan ministries, feeding neighborhood children, visiting the only women’s drug rehabilitation center in Nicaragua, and visiting families in our door-to-door evangelization. Fr. Robert Rindos (the chaplain for Keiser University) will oversee our early morning Holy Hours and Holy Masses, and hear confessions before each Holy Mass, so it will seem as if we never left Ss. Cyril and Methodius. Each evening will end with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and group recollection of the day among our Nicaraguan brothers and sisters. Members of Ss. Cyril and Methodius parish need to know that they will stand prominently in our prayers on the mission. In fact, none of our missions to Nicaragua could have happened without the generous support of so many parishioners. We will have a meeting for those interested in the 2018 trip on February 18 after the 9:30AM Holy Mass, in Room #117. Our fundraising has already begun, THANKS to the Men’s Club and their Lenten Fish Fries.

Rite of Sending * Sunday, February 11 This Sunday, February 11, the Rite of Sending will be
celebrated at the 9:30AM Holy Mass. In this rite, our parish
community will acknowledge the spiritual progress our
(unbaptized) catechumens and (baptized) candidates have
made, express approval of their election or recognition, and
"send" them to our Bishop with assurance of the parish's
care and support. To send a catechumen or candidate to the
Bishop means that the parish has discerned that the person
is ready to enter the Catholic Church.
The next rite will be the Rite of Election, which takes place
at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament with
Archbishop Vigneron on Saturday, February 17. During
this rite, the Godparents and sponsors will again testify that
the participants are ready and the Archbishop will call them
to the holy mysteries this Easter.
Please continue to pray for our beloved catechumens and
candidates preparing for Baptism, First Eucharist, and
Confirmation this Easter!

Thank You! Dear Saints Cyril & Methodius
Parishioners,
I cannot truly thank you enough for all
your generosity in helping me continue to
have the privilege to study at Sacred Heart
Major Seminary here in Detroit. I am truly touched by your charity and kindness. As my
first year at seminary continues, these two semesters have been very fruitful. Prayer has
been my rock and I am relying more on our Blessed Mother, staying faithful to my rosary
and relying on her intercession for God’s will in discernment. There have been many
obstacles since I have been here and it hasn’t always been easy, but I have been working
diligently to rise to the occasion and succeed with the help of all your prayers. I am looking
forward to what the future holds and doing my best.
In Jesus and Mary, Dan Robertson

ADORATION 101 * The Sacrament of Charity: Spirituality and a Eucharistic Culture We forge along in our study of the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis of the Holy Father Pope
(Emeritus) Benedict XVI on the Eucharist as the source and summit of the Church’s life and mission by taking a look at
spirituality and a Eucharistic culture.
We start by quoting the synod fathers on a vital topic. They state that, “The Christian faithful need a fuller understanding of
the relationship between the Eucharist and their daily lives. Eucharistic spirituality is not just participation in Mass and devo-
tion to the Blessed Sacrament. It embraces the whole of life.” The Holy Father stresses that the secularization which we live
in can ultimately attribute to the modern idea that faith (Christianity) has been placed on the margins of society; as if it’s
something like a hobby or simply irrelevant in everyday life. Living as if God doesn’t exist is commonplace; even if one
does happen to subscribe to the existence of a “higher, more intelligent being”, it impacts their lives but little.
Pope Benedict poignantly states that, “Today there is a need to rediscover that Jesus Christ is not just a private conviction or
an abstract idea, but a real person, whose becoming part of human history is capable of renewing the life of every man and
woman.” What needs to happen is we need to learn how to, as St. Paul says in Romans 8:5-15, live “in the Spirit.” This
means that since the Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of our life and mission, it is where we make the transition from
living according to the flesh into living in the Spirit, which is what spirituality is.
Once we begin this transformation, our faith will impact our daily lives as it’s supposed to. There is a link between our spiri-
tual worship and living one’s own life. They’re inseparable. We must live according to the will of God (in the Spirit) instead
of our own wills (according to the flesh). What there cannot be is an in-between. The old saying, “God is either Lord of all,
or not at all” resounds. We would be doing ourselves a grave injustice it we separated the two as so many in today’s society
have. We are used to compartmentalizing our lives - our family here, secular friends there, church life and friends here, co-
workers and acquaintances there - but they all need to fall under the umbrella of God’s plan in our lives because they all
work together; and the Eucharist is where it all begins. - Paul A. Ray
