It is a pleasure to introduce you to beau-tiful Moapa Valley – Southern Nevada’s hometown!
During the regional growth boom of the past two decades, the Moapa Valley has been able to retain its small-town rural ideal. In Moapa Valley you’ll find that people are friendly and that the time passes a little slower with fewer worries. Visitors can experience true small-town hospitality. Local shops and business-
es are welcoming and will work hard to meet their customers’ needs.
A great day in Moapa Valley can begin early exploring the many ‘roads less-travelled’ through the desert. Each of these roads, no matter which direction you choose, will lead to a wealth of outdoor adventures just waiting for you. The community is sur-rounded by natural treasures including the Valley of Fire State Park, Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the Logandale Trails system. The rich history of the area is showcased in the re-nowned Lost City Museum which is a must-see for area visitors.
The Moapa Valley is also a willing host to many homespun com-munity events that can offer urban dwellers an escape from the fast pace of city life. The Clark County Fair and Rodeo provides a world-class experience in a small-town country fair setting. The Pomegranate Arts Festival gives visitors a memorable experi-ence of a rural harvest festival just an hour from the Las Vegas urban center. And there are many more hometown events fea-tured throughout our year.
After a day of adventure, you can return at your leisure to our downtown area and enjoy a home-style meal in one of our excel-lent local restaurants. And as the sun goes down, stick around to be reminded what a dark starry sky still looks like, away from the bright lights of the city.
We love the simple beauty of rural Moapa Valley. And with out-standing weather, plenty of fresh air and clear blue skies, how can you blame us? We welcome you to our little town. We hope that you enjoy your time here as a true country dweller. Whether you stick around for just a day or for the rest of your life, we en-courage you to make our hometown your hometown!
Sincerely,
Kent SlightPresidentMoapa Valley Chamber of Commerce

As early as 100 BC Moapa Valley was home to a culturally advanced peo-
ple. Though they left no written record other than the petroglyphs still evident on the rocks of the area these early people developed permanent villages and sus-tained themselves for over 1,000 years. During the highpoint of their civilization they built and lived in adobe pit dwellings on the hills overlooking the valley. On the valley floor they developed an irrigation system, grew a variety of crops, devel-oped active trading alliances with people as far away as New Mexico, and traded commodities including food, salt and tur-quoise.
These early people and their civilization, called by modern re-searchers “The Anasazi” denoting “the ancient ones”, disappeared around 1150 AD leaving virtually no clue as to the reason for their disappearance. They did, however, leave a rich archeological heritage of their presence here. Artifacts from “Pueblo Grande de Nevada” were excavated before the waters of Lake Mead rose to cover the site and are carefully displayed at the Lost City Museum in Overton.
Ancestors of today’s Southern Paiutes entered the Moapa Valley about the time the Anasazi disappeared and made this rich desert valley their permanent home. Their proud descendants are part of the rich fabric of the Moapa Valley community today.
The earliest permanent white settlement of Moapa Valley came in 1864 when Mormon President Brigham Young dispatched sever-al families to settle the area known as “The Muddy”. The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or M o r m o n s , sought to es-tablish settle-ments where cotton and other staple crops could be grown. The Mormons establ ished several towns
along the Muddy River in what would later be called Moapa Valley, including St. Thomas, Overton, St. Joseph (now Logandale), and West Point. In 1871, following disputations over state bound-aries and taxes, the settlers, now over 600 in number, moved back to Utah.
Within ten years however, other “Lat-ter-day Saint” church members, drawn by the rich agricultural potential of the area, began to re-settle the pioneer towns of Moapa Valley. These new set-tlers established farms and ranches, businesses and mines, and the area be-gan to flourish.
With the coming of the railroad in 1905 and the ready access to markets it provided, Moapa Valley underwent economic and social change but agriculture was always it’s economic base. Through the first 65 years of the 20th century Moapa Valley farmers produced fresh winter vegetables for the dinner tables of Utah and Idaho while those ar-eas were still frozen in winter. Milk from many fam-ily dairies operat ing in Moapa Valley pro-vided fresh milk for a fast grow-ing Las Ve-gas.
The last of the 20th century and early 21st have seen agriculture in Moapa Valley change to horse breeding, hay production, and extensive family gardening. Meanwhile business and industrial growth has increased with the growth in population.
Always a self-sufficient community, the Moapa Valley retail sec-tor has done a brisk business. So have the mining, manufacturing, and construction companies that call Moapa Valley home.
Moapa Valley is proud of our historical heritage. We are proud to proclaim ourselves “Southern Nevada’s Hometown”.

Moapa Valley Is Hometown NevadaWe who hail from Moapa Valley
like to think of our community as “Hometown Southern Nevada”. And indeed it is. Its small town charm and quaintness, are prized by residents and enjoyed by visitors.
Located only fifty miles up Interstate 15 from fabulous Las Vegas, Moapa Val-ley is the big city’s polar opposite: quiet, friendly, rural, neighborly.
Its physical configuration virtually as-sures that Moapa Valley will always be a small town. Though 30 miles long, the Moapa Valley is, in most places, barely two miles wide. It is also a place of stark contrasts. Picturesque, flat-topped me-sas, red hills and cliffs, and desert mountains form a startling back-
drop for the green fields, ex-pansive yards and beautiful gardens of Moapa Valley.
During recent years the economic base of Moapa Valley has changed. Once a farming community, com-mercial agriculture no longer plays the role it once did. But true to its rural roots Moapa Valley is home to the Clark County Fair with its PRCA Rodeo and Youth Livestock Show.
The Livestock Show is a place for the kids and youth to bring their steers, sheep,
goats, pigs, and other animals which they have care-fully raised. The animals are groomed, manicured, and shown before judges at the Show. After the judg-ing and awards, then comes the auction when the kids find out whether all their efforts are really worth it. And they always are.
The Logandale PRCA Rodeo brings professional cowboys and cowgirls from all over North America to compete for position and money on the PRCA cir-cuit.
For the seeker of peace and quiet, Moapa Valley has long been one of southern Nevada’s most popular “quiet” tourist and winter resident havens. The Valley of Fire State Park, the north shore of Lake Mead, the
Overton Wildlife Area and Waterfowl Preserve, the miles and miles of off-road vehicle trails in the area attracts locals, snowbirds, vacationers, tour-ists, and sportsmen to Moapa Valley from around the world.
And don’t miss the Lost City Muse-um located in Overton. The museum boasts one of the foremost collec-tions of ancient Native American arti-facts and pre-history anywhere in the Southwest.
Hungry or need some refreshment? Want to refill the ice chest in prepara-tion for that picnic or hike in the Valley of Fire? Or do you just want a place
to lie down and sleep a while? Moapa Valley’s business and pro-fessional community is vibrant and thriving. Restaurants, hardware stores, grocery stores, motels, doctors, dentists, accountants, fi-nancial services, and a multitude of other busi-nesses provide Moapa Valley with its every need.
Want the lat-est in news? The community
is served by a top quality weekly newspaper that provides local and regional news along with thought provoking opinions on local happen-ings.
Maybe you’d rather fly than drive? Moapa Valley boasts a 4,700 foot paved and lighted airport that allows you to come and go at your leisure whether you only plan to stay for a day, or for a two-day fishing or four-wheeling excur-sion, or for the four days of the Clark County Fair, or for a week or two of using Moapa Valley as your base for regional sightseeing. Whether you choose any of these or whether you choose to just put down roots and stay forever---you are welcome in Moapa Valley!!!
In any case, come on out to Moapa Valley and discover Southern Nevada’s Hometown.

LOST CITY MUSEUM
A mysterious story, long buried beneath the Moapa Valley sand, is unearthed
at the Lost City Museum. This is home to one of the most complete collections of Anasazi culture in the Southwest.
The ancient civilization flour-ished from 100 B.C. to A.D. 1150 when the inhabitants mysteriously
disappeared. In the 1920s, archaeologist discovered the ruins of this Lost City. On display are pottery, stone tools, jewelry and other artifacts and examples of prehistoric dwellings reconstructed on original foundations.
The museum is open Thursday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults with discounts for seniors. Children under 18 enter free. Call 702-397-2193 for summer hours
VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARKValley of Fire derives its name
from rich red sandstone for-mations, shaped by shifting dunes during the age of dinosaurs. Over the centuries, the wind, rain and desert elements have worked their wonders to create a landscape of stunning beauty.
The Valley of Fire area has been home to ancient native American
inhabitants. Some of the best examples of ancient rock art or petroglyphs in Southern Nevada can be found within the park.
The park offers a full-scale visitor center and many hiking trails. Camp-ing and picnic facilities are available. For information call Valley of Fire State Park (702) 397-2088.
LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA
Lake Mead offers a spar-kling blue contrast to the
surrounding desert landscape. With so much fun just up the road from Moapa Valley’s main commercial district, the hard part is deciding between fish-ing, boating, jetskiing, kayak-ing or canoeing. The Echo Bay area has a boat launch, swim-ming beaches, picnic areas, RV trailer park, campground, fish cleaning station, convenience store and land-based gas station. A local touring company offers adventure tour packages on the Lake. For information go to www.awesomeadventure-guide.com
HISTORIC ST. THOMAS GHOST TOWN
Though the Southwest has many ghost towns, historic
St. Thomas is unique. It was underwater for over 65 years! Founded by Mormon settlers in 1865, this bustling pioneer community fell victim to prog-ress when the construction of Hoover Dam and the resulting waters of Lake Mead forced its abandonment in the 1930s.
Prolonged drought conditions in the west have caused lake water levels to drop. Little by little, the old town site has emerged on dry ground. Visi-tors can now hike a moderate two-mile loop to view the ruins of the old town. The site is within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. More information available at: www.nps.gov/lame/historyculture/stthomas.htm
LOGANDALE TRAILS
The Logandale Trails system offers visitors an off-road extravagan-
za. Located just over the hills to the west of Logandale and Overton, the Logandale Trails landscape is breathtaking. Towering red sandstone cliffs surround the trails system. The 45,000 acre system contains over 200 miles of trails suitable for a variety of OHV types as well as mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and rock climbing.Visitors can view the many instances of Native American petroglyphs etched into the sandstone cliffs dating back thousands of years. For more information go to www.logandaletrails.com.
OLD LOGANDALE SCHOOL HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL SOCIETY
Located in an 1930s-era school-house, the Old Logandale School
Historical and Cultural Society contains a wealth of community history. Exhib-its tell stories of the pioneer settlers of the Moapa Valley area. The museum is open for visitors Wednesday thru Satur-day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Society also maintains an extensive historical library. In addition to many important historical documents; like personal and family histo-ries; the library has more than 200 audio histories recording memories of people who grew up in the area. The Library is open to the public for research, class tours, or special assignments. For more information about the Old Logandale School, call (702) 398-7272.
MOAPA VALLEY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
The Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge was set aside
to secure habitat for the endangered Moapa dace. The Moapa dace is a small fishfound only in the head-waters of the Muddy River.
The 106 acre Wildlife Refuge was established in 1979. It offers an easy self-guided walking trail which winds through willows
and palm trees among some of the artesian springs that are the source of the Muddy River and features a beautiful overlook of the riparian Warm Springs desert oasis.
An aquatic viewing chamber allows visitors to view directly into the artesian stream flow and see the finger-szied dace and other species in the natural habitat.
The Refuge is currently open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays between the Labor Day and the Memorial Day weekends. Hours of opera-tion are from 8:00 a.m and 4 p.m. Information is available at http://www.fws.gov/desertcomplex/moapavalley/

DOUBLE NEGATIVE LANDSCAPE ART
Hidden out in the desert a few miles east of the Moapa Valley
is a curious and thought-provoking work of art. Double Negative, con-ceived by artist Michael Heizer in 1969-70, was among the first “earth-works” in an artistic movement to use the earth as a canvas.
Double Negative is essentially two ends of a trench spanning empty space. The trenches line up across a large gap formed by the natural shape of a Mormon Mesa.
Double Negative is located in a rather remote area of the desert, but it can be visited relatively easily. The journey requires travel on rough un-paved roads. Vehicles with high clearance recommended. For information about Double Negative visit http://doublenegative.tarasen.net/

APRILClark County Fair And Rodeo
The Clark County Fair had its beginning as
just a small town fair in 1965. Back then it was a relatively small lo-cal celebration. From this humble beginning, the Fair has grown into a major annual event drawing people from far and wide to Moapa Val-ley.
Despite this, the Fair has retained the simple homespun qualities that are at its roots. A main event rodeo features the best of the best with over 600 nation-wide contestants com-peting for over $250,000 in prize money. Other entertainment is also in abundance at the Fair. Country music headliners, ma-gicians, local variety acts, livestock shows, arts/crafts exhibits and horticultural displays are all in a day’s fun at the Fair. And don’t forget the huge carnival midway! For more information and tickets call 1-888-876-FAIR or go to www.ccfair.com.
JULYIndependence Day Celebration
Much more than an evening fi reworks
show, Independence Day in Moapa Valley is an all-day celebration. Locals begin gather-ing at the Clark County Fairgrounds at 7:00 a.m. for an early morning fl agraising ceremony led by local veterans. A community breakfast
is then served by the Moapa Valley Rotary Club. The rest of the morning is spent with a festival of activities including hot dog eating contests, pie eating contests, water games, a watermel-on bust and, fi nally, a water fi ght between the local Volunteer Fire Departments.
In the evening the community gathers again for a pit barbe-cue dinner sponsored by the Moapa Valley Chamber of Com-merce. As the sun sets, the skies are lit up by a community fi reworks display that concludes the festivities.
A perfect autumn day in the park with cars, cars and more cars. Spectators of all ages will delight in this event which
brings automobile afi cionados from all over the southwest to the Overton Park just a block away from Moapa Valley’s main business district. The show is open to all years, makes and mod-els of vehicles including vintage, originals, hot rods, street rods, competition and customs.
Plenty of activities and prizes keep things interesting through-out the day including many award categories, trophies, draw-ings and give-aways. A live band provides entertainment. The event is put on by the Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce. More information is available at www.moapavalley.com.

Winding through some of the most
breathtaking landscape in Southern Nevada, the Valley of Fire Half Mara-thon offers cross-country runners the challenge of a lifetime. The event begins near the Visitor’s Center of the Valley of Fire State Park and fea-
tures a half marathon, a 10K run and a 5K run. Leading through slot canyons, across expansive vistas and past ancient native American petroglyphs, the course gives runners an up-close tour through the stunning natural wonders of this park. The road dips up and down through the challenging, hilly terrain. In the course of the race the road climbs about 1000 feet in elevation; and then it comes all the way back down again before reach-ing the fi nish line. For more information about the half marathon go to http://runvalleyoffi re.com/.
Combine an autumn har-vest festival with a coun-
try fi ne arts show and you get the Pomegranate Arts Festi-val. Organized by the Moa-pa Valley Art Guild, the Fes-tival celebrates the annual harvest of renowned Moapa Valley pomegranates.
The Festival is fi lled with country displays and booths. Jams and jellies made by local vendors from the home-grown fruit are on sale. Vendors of hand-made crafts provide a va-riety of fare. Entertainment is on-going throughout the festival and is all supplied by local talent. In addition, Art Guild mem-bers exhibit their own artwork, much of which is available for sale. Admission to the event is free.

Hump N Bump is the oldest and largest off-road vehicle rock-crawling event in Southern Ne-vada.
This family-friendly event at-tracts hundreds of 4x4 enthusi-asts to the Logandale Trails area for a weekend of extreme trail riding. The event is staged from the Clark County Fairgrounds where folks come to camp for the weekend.

ticipants in a special course adjacent to the Fairgrounds. The whole community comes out to watch the fun. For information about the Hump N Bump go to www.vv4w.org.

MARCHCommunity-wide Yard Sale
Remember that old saying: “One
man’s trash is another man’s treasure”? Well, if that is true, there are plenty of treasures to go around at the Moapa Valley Com-munity Yard Sale.
Each year the lo-cals do some spring cleaning. Then they all get together on one weekend in March and hold a whole town-full of yard sales. There are bargains waiting down nearly every street in town.
A detailed map of all the different yard sales going on that day is published the week before in the Moapa Valley Progress newspaper. Watch the paper’s website at www.mvprogress.com to download a copy of your own map. And then come to Moapa Valley that weekend for a treasure hunt.
The event is sponsored by the Moapa Valley Rotary Club which, every year, holds a monster sale of its own right in the middle of downtown Overton.
Moapa Valley Festival of Trees • DecemberA Holiday Winter Wonderland occurs each year at the Old Lo-gandale School. Local residents and businesses decorate trees in various themes. Festival goers can then bid on the trees to raise money for the local historical society. For information call 702-398-7272.
