#1 Land Company as ranked by The Land Report

80± acres of hardwoods, rolling hills and a 1500±-sq-ft cabin make this property a must-have for the outdoors man looking for ground in Southern Illinois. Trophy whitetails and turkeys roam the forest in this private setting bordering the Shawnee National Forest. Adjacent properties offer ample food sources (beans and corn) as well as natural year-round water sources. This tract also comes with several full shooting houses and stands positioned perfectly for maximum productivity. The cabin is hardly “roughing it”, as this 3-bedroom 1-bath home comes with a gas fireplace in the living area, forced heat and air conditioning, a covered patio, ceiling fans, workshop, and satellite TV. The newly built cabin (less than 2 years old) has a waterfront view (water not on property) with a gravel road leading to the land. Call Kerry “Red” Johnson at (573)979-7979. $400,000

The views on this 83±-acre farm overlooking the Mississippi River Bottoms are stunning! This property offers plenty of hunting opportunities, and is balanced with enough timber and brush to hold wildlife. With cover you must have food, and this tract has 26± acres currently in row crops. It was not planted this spring due to wet weather. Other pasture and open ground could be transformed into food plots for additional food sources. A 1,500±-sq-ft home with 4 bedrooms and 1 bath has some updates and would make a perfect hunting cabin. Water is on a deep well and the house is all electric. 3 outbuildings sit next to home. This property lays in the southern part of the county just minutes from Hwy 79 and Hwy 61. Call Joe Ogden at (636)358-3567. $369,350

One of the hardest things to do as a hunter is to be patient. As long as you’re in the woods, you want the deer to start moving early and stay on their feet. The reality of the situation is that deer move on their own timetable, which can lead to some frustrating trips to the woods. And while some of us find it hard to stay put and exercise patience, that’s certainly not the case for all…especially young Dax DuBroc.

Dax, 12-years-old, was on a trip with his father, Jon, to northern Missouri, hunting with Phil Brown of Trophy Properties and Auction, and let’s just say the conditions were less than pleasant. Cold, wind, and rain made for a slow hunt.

The deer were bedded down and had no urgency to get on their feet. The situation was all too familiar for the DuBroc’s, who experienced the same conditions on a hunt in 2012 with Mr. Brown. The end result a season ago was a good time… but no kill.

This time around, the hunt was a couple weeks earlier during the rut, but still an exercise in patience. “After texting a time or two I wanted them to stay in the woods a bit longer,” said Brown.

As the morning wore on, nothing worth harvesting had passed, until a nice 10-point buck came into view. As the pace quickened there was precious little time to waste as this trophy was on the move. A moment later, after hours in the woods, Dax bagged his first buck, a trophy scoring 150 5/8 inches.

“Moments after my text they responded with the good news,” recalled Brown. “This was one of the coolest hunts I’ve been a part of this season.”
