8 NOVEMBER JAZZ; 6-8.30pm, Free before 8pm: Teatime Acoustic – Sher Watson & Friends. The troubadour singer/songwriter, (of band Das Contras), with freaky, funky 'Folk Fae Fife', and special guests! 9pm (Entry from 8pm, £5/£4, Davie Dunsmuir Band, The Ayrshire-based guitarist is respected for his broad musicality and strong technique, and here he also showcases his jazzy (and somewhat funky) compositional talents. His new 4-piece band features some top players including keys maestro Pete Johnstone, electric bassist Angus Tikka and drums star Alyn Cosker. The music is originals written by Davie, plus others along the lines of Chick Corea Elektrik Band, and electric guitar heroes Alan Holdsworth and John Scofield. A Bridge Music event, presented with support from Creative Scotland 12-3am (Entry from 11.30pm) £5/£4, The Union (Funk/Soul 8-piece!) Full-on James Brown/Tower of Power high-energy Funk/Soul from vocals-fronted 8-piece band with sax, trumpet and trombone horn section. Plus Funk DJ, The Jazz Bar,1a Chambers Street, Edinburgh. 9 NOVEMBER LIMBO celebrates its sixth anniversary welcoming one of the capital's favourite song-writers, WILLIAM DOUGLAS with his seasoned band, THE WHEEL, plus support from new Edinburgh acts JAQUIMO and ELYSSA VULPES (performing with her own band). Astonishingly, it's the first time Douglas has played for Limbo, though he's played at The Voodoo Rooms many times, as have his band - something of a Who's Who of the Scottish live music scene, no less. JAQUIMO are a new Edinburgh outfit, who play a funky stew of rock, pop and jazz built on a bedrock of soul. Dancing is the only goal for this group, and they pull together every groove, hook and harmony from all over the world into a whirligig celebration of being alive. And first on stage is ELYSSA VULPES, another new act. Through mists of old Gaelic ballads to 70s Italian alternative folk and

back again, inside waves of electronic experimentation and bluesy, jazzy contaminations, solace is found in stories and atmospheres that recall PJ Harvey, Cat Power, and Eddie Brickell. The BLACK SPRING DJs will be joining the dots between the bands and keeping the party going afterwards, as usual. Time 8pm-1am. Tickets £4 (early bird available until Sat 2nd Nov) / Tickets £4 (early bird tickets available until Sat 2nd Nov) / £6 (advance) / £8 on the door! Doors open at 8pm. EDINBURGH ROYAL CHORAL UNION, NYCoS Edinburgh Choir, The Brass Lab, Simon Nieminksi (organ), Emily Mitchell (soprano), Jeremy Huw Williams (baritone),Michael Bawtree (conductor). Pre-concert talk with Professor Paul Mealor, Programme - Paul Mealor - The Farthest Shore, Britten - Rejoice in the Lamb, Fauré - Requiem. This concert, the first in ERCU's 2013/14 season, marks the Scottish Premiere of The Farthest Shore by choral music’s popular composer, Paul Mealor. Paul’s dramatic 40-minute work for choir, children’s choir, soprano and bass soloists, brass quintet and organ spawns a fireside Celtic legend inspired by folklore. Cast upon an unforgiving shore during a terrible storm, a stranger weaves an unfathomable, unforgettable spell over the inhabitants of a small village. This remarkable tale entwines reality, morality and faith in the quest for an ultimate personal truth. Greyfriar's Kirk, Edinburgh, Pre talk 6.30pm, Concert 7.30pm. SID GRIFFIN brings his Coal Porters back to Woodend, last time they visited they blew everyone away with a blistering performance and we can expect more of the same this time, including tunes from their highly acclaimed new CD Find the one. Supporting the Coal Porters will be a favourite act of mine Andy Tucker who writes clever witty and downright fabulous tunes, one of which will be seen in a new drama with David Tennant set in Edinburgh. And to conclude the festival another great act returning to Woodend, Rod Picott, who also has a new album out and who I think is a fabulous song writer. The son of a welder from rural New England, Rod is a masterful songwriter and soulful singer who carries with him as fine a suitcase of songs as you'll find anywhere. Slaid Cleaves, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Fred Eagelsmith have recorded Rod Picott songs. A former construction worker who hung up his tools when he released his debut CD in 2000, Picott has carved a career for himself with a run of 6 beautifully crafted self-released CDs over the last 13 years and a well-earned reputation as an engaging, emotion fuelled performer. http://scotiabar.net/music.html OMAR SOULEYMAN. As one of the most fascinating figures in contemporary music, musician and singer Omar Souleyman’s Kurdish and Arabic songs have travelled from his native Syria across the world. As the internet’s globalisation of music continues to fuel interest within the contemporary

experimental electronic music scene for a vast diaspora of sounds, Omar Souleyman’s work has now reached a very special creative crossroads. As a footnote, we’re also sure that his performance will also be less turbulent than his last. Having fallen on the date of the now infamous ‘Hurricane Bawbag’, which unfortunately stopped some ticket holders attending, we’re confident that the madness of this year’s show will remain firmly indoors, not out. ST BOSWELLS LIVE! : Bread & Jam Open Mic. Something new for St Boswells Live! We have had continued calls for jam sessions and open mics, but the big hall can be a bit scary, especially when there are lots of people watching and even milling about at the end. With this in mind, and with the help of St Boswells Cricket Club, we are introducing Bread & Jam, a terrible pun on a simple concept. This is how it works: From 8pm, turn up at the Cricket Club (just round the back of the Buccleuch Arms Hotel) with your instrument, voice or just a willingness to listen and enjoy the music. Feel free to bring an amplifier if you need one, but the room is small enough to be acoustic. If you feel an urge, and there is no one else doing it, play your instrument, sing your song, tell your story or whatever you want to do. We encourage people to join in, but if you want to do it alone then just ask. In the meantime, get drinks from the Cricket Club bar, listen to other people, and enjoy the soup and bread we’ve laid on (that’s where the “bread” bit comes from). That’s it. Donations to pay for the food, and keep St Boswells Live! running are welcome, but there’s no obligation. Oh, and if you’re planning on coming then drop us a note, just so we get an idea of numbers for food. in St Boswells Cricket Club from 8pm. www.stboswellslive.com RESTON CONCERT BAND: Village Hall, Cockburnspath. On 15-17th No-vember 2013 Kingussie will be bouncing once again with dance workshops, showcases and live mu-sic from across the land. www.dannsa.com/forthcoming_events.asp The Piano 2013 Glasgow November 16 - December 1 Ultimately, the piano, like every in-strument is merely a tool, a means to an end. But no other instrument can compare with the piano for the power it gives the individual player to create a whole many-voiced world of colours, lines, arguments, textures – and emotions. Few other instruments have proven them-selves as multifaceted and versatile as this astounding creation of wood, metal, wire, felt and lacquer. That is why in November, we celebrate The Piano. www.glasgowmusic.co.uk Fiddle 2013 Edinburgh November 22-24 The Scots Fiddle Festival seeks to sustain and promote Scottish fiddle tradition and idioms, by providing a platform for performance, educa-tion, and participation.
