Kindle a sense of wonder in the world of plants with your preschool child as you reawaken it in yourself. Each weekly theme helps spark your child’s appreciation for nature through planting, art, sensory and science activities, discovery zones, music and movement, story time, Green Play Yard adventures, greenhouse exploration – and a snack. Come play and learn about nature! PeaPods for Preschoolers registration is by seasonal series of 10 weekly classes for 3-5-year-olds with accompanying adults. For late registrants, remaining class sessions are available for purchase at a prorated price by calling 612-301-1210.

In order to honor the abilities and interests of preschoolers, please bring only registered participants. The Arboretum has many areas of interest for children of all ages. Ask us for ideas for your older children.

This year, Seed Sowers will have a space-explorer theme, so get ready to grow a garden that is out of this world! Tend your own garden-galaxy, explore the Arboretum, and engage in scientific discovery. Learn about varietals with names like Flying Saucer pattypan squash and Pluto basil, practice unexpected cooking techniques, create “out of this world” snacks and enjoy “over the moon” taste-tests.

Cook up some fun in this culinary-focused, royalty-themed garden experience. Regal varieties of produce, like King of the North pepper and Lemon Queen sunflowers, will set up court in your garden. Have a royally good time each week discovering and exploring the Arboretum, tending your garden plot, and transforming your sumptuous bounty into recipes fit for a king or queen.

Children’s GardenThe Children’s Garden is the place for kids to grow to learn and learn to grow all summer long. From planting to harvest, pairs of gardeners share the responsibility and bounty of a kid-sized plot of vegetables and flowers. Week by week they explore the subtle and sudden changes taking place and celebrate the bees and butterflies, investigate the soil, bask in the sun, play with water, dig for earthworms, tend plants, taste weeds, and marvel at stink bugs, sow bugs and other special guests.

All kid gardeners and their families are invited to the Children’s Garden Graduation Celebration on Wednesday, August 12, 6 – 8 p.m.

Mighty Mites is the perfect place to start growing a love of gardening. Throughout the summer, these youngest gardeners will dig, build, plant, weed, water, investigate, taste-test, explore, participate in scientific discovery, learn the value of teamwork, and marvel at what we make. Join us as we grow a garden full of favorites, including fun-size varieties like Baby Bush zucchini and Big Smile sunflowers, and receive large weekly rewards from a small garden space.

Did you know that bees have five eyes? Or that they have a special tongue that is shaped like a straw? Bees are fascinating creatures and we depend on them for 30% of the food we eat. Find out what happens inside a beehive and why we need bees in our gardens. Taste-test honey and look for bees at work in the garden. Plant a bee-friendly flower to take home.

All field trips are limited to 12-50 youth and take place at the Learning Center. $5.50 per student for all field trips. Fee includes Arboretum admission and all supplies. Call 612-301-1210 to register your group.

We are living in a world of interconnected systems: from homes, food, and shelter, to pollination and seed dispersal, plants and animals rely on each other for survival. Explore plant and animal interactions up close with a hike into the woods. Learn about plant defenses and use the tough-o-meter to find the toughest leaf. Plant a sensitive plant to take home.

The Plant-maker Studio will be staffed by trained volunteers offering “make a plant” experiences for all ages. Our technology-loaded lives can leave anyone eager to dig into nature and get their hands on plants. Studio activities will feature specific plants, and take-homes for participants. Learn how to start cuttings, craft seed bombs,* print leaves, weave fibers and more; activities change by the season.

Each weekly theme helps spark your child’s appreciation for nature through planting, art, sensory and science activities, discovery zones, music and movement, story time, Green Play Yard adventures, greenhouse exploration – and a snack. Come play and learn about nature! PeaPods for Preschoolers registration is by seasonal series of 10 weekly classes for 3-5-year-olds with accompanying adults. Children’s GardenThe Children’s Garden is the place for kids to grow to learn and learn to grow all summer long. From planting to harvest, pairs of gardeners share the responsibility and bounty of a kid-sized plot of vegetables and flowers. Week by week they explore the subtle and sudden changes taking place and celebrate the bees and butterflies, investigate the soil, bask in the sun, play with water, dig for earthworms, tend plants, taste weeds, and marvel at stink bugs, sow bugs and other special guests.

All kid gardeners and their families are invited to the Children’s Garden Graduation Celebration on Wednesday, August 12, 6 – 8 p.m.

Children’s GardenThe Children’s Garden is the place for kids to grow to learn and learn to grow all summer long. From planting to harvest, pairs of gardeners share the responsibility and bounty of a kid-sized plot of vegetables and flowers. Week by week they explore the subtle and sudden changes taking place and celebrate the bees and butterflies, investigate the soil, bask in the sun, play with water, dig for earthworms, tend plants, taste weeds, and marvel at stink bugs, sow bugs and other special guests.

All kid gardeners and their families are invited to the Children’s Garden Graduation Celebration on Wednesday, August 12, 6 – 8 p.m.

Children’s GardenThe Children’s Garden is the place for kids to grow to learn and learn to grow all summer long. From planting to harvest, pairs of gardeners share the responsibility and bounty of a kid-sized plot of vegetables and flowers. Week by week they explore the subtle and sudden changes taking place and celebrate the bees and butterflies, investigate the soil, bask in the sun, play with water, dig for earthworms, tend plants, taste weeds, and marvel at stink bugs, sow bugs and other special guests.

All kid gardeners and their families are invited to the Children’s Garden Graduation Celebration on Wednesday, August 12, 6 – 8 p.m.

On the final day of camp we are going to dig in and play in the mud, in the thoroughly messy way that makes kids cheer and parents cringe. (With the help of a hose and a change of clothes, kids will be squeaky clean before it’s time to go home.)

Children’s GardenThe Children’s Garden is the place for kids to grow to learn and learn to grow all summer long. From planting to harvest, pairs of gardeners share the responsibility and bounty of a kid-sized plot of vegetables and flowers. Week by week they explore the subtle and sudden changes taking place and celebrate the bees and butterflies, investigate the soil, bask in the sun, play with water, dig for earthworms, tend plants, taste weeds, and marvel at stink bugs, sow bugs and other special guests.

All kid gardeners and their families are invited to the Children’s Garden Graduation Celebration on Wednesday, August 12, 6 – 8 p.m.

Mighty Mites is the perfect place to start growing a love of gardening. Throughout the summer, these youngest gardeners will dig, build, plant, weed, water, investigate, taste-test, explore, participate in scientific discovery, learn the value of teamwork, and marvel at what we make. Join us as we grow a garden full of favorites, including fun-size varieties like Baby Bush zucchini and Big Smile sunflowers, and receive large weekly rewards from a small garden space.

Limit 16, Learning Center$150 member/$165 non-member includes weekly snack, fresh-from-the-garden produce, a Children’s Garden t-shirt, and a Children’s Garden recipe book.

Did you know that bees have five eyes? Or that they have a special tongue that is shaped like a straw? Bees are fascinating creatures and we depend on them for 30% of the food we eat. Find out what happens inside a beehive and why we need bees in our gardens. Taste-test honey and look for bees at work in the garden. Plant a bee-friendly flower to take home.

All field trips are limited to 12-50 youth and take place at the Learning Center. $5.50 per student for all field trips. Fee includes Arboretum admission and all supplies. Call 612-301-1210 to register your group.

We are living in a world of interconnected systems: from homes, food, and shelter, to pollination and seed dispersal, plants and animals rely on each other for survival. Explore plant and animal interactions up close with a hike into the woods. Learn about plant defenses and use the tough-o-meter to find the toughest leaf. Plant a sensitive plant to take home.

What do seeds need to grow? Find out with the help of some animal friends in a puppet show. Discover how seeds float, fly, and hitchhike to get to just the right spot to take root. Explore in the garden and chart sunflowers at different stages of growth. Create a sunflower snack and plant a sunflower to take home.

Saturdays and Sundays, year-round, noon – 4 p.m.

The Plant-maker Studio will be staffed by trained volunteers offering “make a plant” experiences for all ages. Our technology-loaded lives can leave anyone eager to dig into nature and get their hands on plants. Studio activities will feature specific plants, and take-homes for participants. Learn how to start cuttings, craft seed bombs,* print leaves, weave fibers and more; activities change by the season.
