It’s hard to believe that the cold winter is behind us and summer is just around the corner! This year has already proved to be a busy and exciting one. Many parts of the country are reporting exceptional kid crops for the year. The volume of registrations I have already proc-essed is proof of great growth in Myotonics across the U.S. & Can-ada, with over 1,500 new registra-tions in just 14 weeks! To ensure the fastest service possible please be sure to include your origi-nal registrations with your transfer applications. Dealing with missing and hard to read forms can be very
time consuming! This slows down the return of processed work and causes a back-up for all. Our goal is to provide you with the most accurate information available in a reasonable amount of time. The Reading, PA show held in March had the largest number of exhibitors in the area to date. I would like to thank so many for their long travel and dedication to the breed. I have had many spectators contact the registry who enjoyed the information and education provided at the show. Hats off to all of you for a job well done! I hope many of you who are thinking of at-tending a show this year will do so. Our shows provide the largest opportunity for educating the public and attracting new breeders. It is also a wonderful chance to receive education and make new friends within our organization. Our latest new program is the “High Point Award” which pays out premium awards at the end of the year. All money paid into the program will be paid out to the Grand & Reserve Champions of each division. To sign up for the program contact Judy Balmer at: [email protected]
Mark your calendars, pack your bags and head to TX in November for an exciting and educational event! We will be hosting two shows and our Na-tional show on November 10 & 11, 2012. We will also be offering pen sales for those who wish to offer goats for sale without showing. I would like to remind all that we will be hosting our first judges training program in Henderson, TX on November 9, 2012 during our Super MGR week-end. The school will be a one day event and the costs will be $200.00. I am in the final stages of finishing all forms for the website and expect to have them available by the 1st of May. MGR is always on the lookout for articles and educational material for our newsletter. If you have an article or photos that you would be willing to share please e-mail them to:
[email protected] Three years ago, I became the owner of this fine registry. I had a pocket full of goals and a great deal of dreams! Looking back, I could have never known just how many wonderful breeders I would come to know and the dedication to the breed each of you would show! Thank you all for your support and passion; may we continue to grow together. ~Tara
Notice of Change Looking to the future of the breed is very important not only for its preservation but also for the acceptance of the Myotonic as a breed. One of the ongoing problems in that acceptance is that as a landrace breed it has many different looks, and therefore cannot be given a breed standard that will cover the breed. This is the reason MGR has in the past only used a Breed Description.
How do we get this to be an accepted breed by the industry and also be able to have a breed standard that will indeed allow for a true con-formation? Not a simple or quick task to do. However, we will begin on 01/01/2013 to initiate our first step by closing the registry to al-low only bucks that have two (2) registered MGR parents.
How does this help? We must accept that our Bucks are one half of our herd. Therefore, if no new bucks are allowed into the MGR registry then we will begin to see a particular look begin to shape within this registry. This will not happen overnight but is a start to progressively moving the Myotonics into a breed that can be recognized instantly by breeders.
Remember: as of 01/01/2013 Bucks without TWO registered MGR parents will not be allowed to be registered---no exceptions.
Editor’s Note: The Winter issue had featured breeder Terry Alleva but did not mention the name of her farm. Since another
breeder’s goats were mentioned, it was misleading to those who don’t know Terry. Terry is the owner of Little Falls Farm
located in Long Island, New York.

MGR ANNOUNCES 2012 HIGH POINT PROGRAM
~submitted by Judy Balmer
The Myotonic Goat Registry is pleased to announce a new program for our members who enjoy showing their goats. This program is designed to allow members to compete with their goats for year end recognition and cash awards. Member-owners nominate the goats they choose and then begin showing those animals. Each time one of those goats wins a 1st thru 5th place ribbon at a MGR sanctioned show, points are earned. This program will have three separate contests: one each for does, bucks and wethers.
When show season ends, the two goats in each contest that have accumulated the most points will be named High Point and Reserve High Point Champions. Their owners will split the Jackpot (total nomination fees) for each contest. If you plan to exhibit at the early shows this year, hurry and nominate your goats now.
Judy Balmer has volunteered to track the points earned in this program. Until the entry information is posted on the MGR website, email Judy at [email protected] to get your copy.
See you at the shows! For more information, see page 14 & 15

MGR BREEDER DREW & AMY DERIEMACKER
Greetings from the Land of Lincoln! We are located six miles West of Springfield, Illinois. My wife Amy (Kinner) DeRiemacker has been raising Myotonics since 2003.When we met in 2007, I fell in love with the breed, and assumed the operations shortly after that. I had never raised livestock during my childhood, so this was a new adventure for me. Needless to say, I cannot see us with-out Myotonics! We have two bucks, seven does and one wether. Our herd includes black and white and tri-colored, both horned and naturally polled, and brown, marbled, and blue eyes. We begin breeding in the months of November and December for Spring Kids. All of our Kids are MGR registered at the time of sale, regardless if they are sold as pets (including wethers) or breeding stock. We enjoy spending time with the Kids each evening during chore time, making sure each one gets ample attention! Don’t let our adults fool you, they are spoiled too! Our entire herd (anyone over one year of age) was tested for Caseous Lymphadenitis (CL) in July of 2011, with all goats testing negative. We will be testing for CL again this year, and also plan to test for CAE and Johnes. We are proud supporters of local and state 4-H and FFA programs. I served as State Secretary for the Illinois FFA in 2002-2003. We have also begun raising Miniature Horses! We will begin breeding them in the near future, but for now, enjoy driving them. Amy and I are also owners/operators of Kinner Kennels, a full service dog boarding facility. While she is doing the daily operations of the kennel, I am work-ing as a Soil Conservation Technician for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. We also help her parents and brother on the fam-ily farm, which was recently designated as a Sesquicentennial Farm. Corn, soybeans, hay, and cattle are the main focus. I can usually be found in the tractor working ground, or in the semi hauling to the eleva-tor. In our free time together, we enjoy our German Rottweilers, trail riding with our horses, and attending exotic animal auctions. I also love attending and participating in tractor pulls, collecting farm toys and pre-historic/native American archaeology.

GOAT TIPS: WHAT SHOW CLASS IS MY GOAT IN?
Is your head spinning from trying to figure out what show class your goat is in ? This calculator lets you type in your show date and gives you two dates, if your goat is born between these two dates, that’s your class. I used this tool when I was show secretary for an ABGA show, it made getting all entries in the right class a lot less confusing. Go to http://www.boergoats.com and move your cursor on the yellow “Links and Tools” and select “Show Class Calculator”.

YOUTH BREEDER JASMINE PITTMAN
Hello, My name is Jasmine Pittman. I'm 14 and a freshman in High School. I'm in a club called Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Interact Club. Outside of school I participate in 4-H . I have played softball since I was in the third grade. We made a trip to my grandma's house to Marshall County, TN in 2005 and that's when I brought my first goats back. Their names are Robbie and Joker. We still have them to this day. Robbie is my best friend. No lie. We eventually moved down there in October , 2010. That's when I started my farm called Jazzy's Farm and became a member of MGR. In my opinion goats are very fun to have and are very enter-taining.

MYOTONIC GOAT REVIEW PAGE 12
THOUGHTS ON GOAT PARASITES
Parasites are all about the immune system. A healthy immune system fights off parasites, and is stimulated by the presence of a small number of parasites. If the immune system is not the key, then how can you have a field of goats, all exposed to the same parasites, and some show symptoms while others thrive?
Copper is especially important for immune function. And, be-cause minerals act both synergistically and antagonistically, you also have to look at other minerals that interact with copper. Mulder’s Chart expresses the relationships visually.
Parasite go through phases of activity that are linked to the moon phases and the time of day. Fecal tests should be done at the same moon stage and same time of day for consistent results. Deworming at the full moon is the most effective, when cell fluid pressure is at peak. If I am doing a multi-day 3 or 7 day deworm-ing, I make sure the full moon falls at the middle of the process.
Rather than deworming by the calendar, deworm as the goats show signs of parasite overload, or if a fecal test reveals a high fecal count.
Dewormers in order of least toxic to most toxic: 1) Montmorillonite/bentonite clay & food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) 2) Herbal dewormers 3) Chemical dewormers *Piperazine, Thiabendazole, Oxfendazole *Fenbendazole *Pyrantel *Anthelcide & Oxibendazole *Ivermectin *Moxidectin *In order by reported deaths, with no deaths for Piperazine/Thiabendazole/Oxfendazole to most deaths for Moxidectin.
Montmorillonite/bentonite clay has a long history of being used for detoxification and parasite removal. Additionally, this clay is on the FDA Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) list. The clay, when wet, carries a strong negative charge which attracts posi-tively-charged toxins and repels parasites.
Food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) works mechanically, by scraping the parasite exoskeleton, causing the parasite to dehy-drate and die. There is debate whether DE is effective for goats. For large goat operations, the DE can be milled into the grain, or fed free-choice. DE can be safely fed year round. Always use food grade. DE is also FDA GRAS.
So far, parasites do not appear to develop resistance to mechani-cal/physical control by clay or DE. I use clay and diatomaceous earth on my pregnant does.
Herbal remedies are an entire article by themselves. There are many brands and many herbal combinations, using garlic, worm-wood, walnut and other herbs. Fiasco Farm sells herbal dewormers and has a good section on parasites. I personally use Dynamite Herbal Tonic, except on pregnant does. With a heavily parasitized goat, start mild and work your way up. Starting with the big guns can lead to a massive parasite die-off, releasing toxins that can kill the goat. Support the gut after a chemical deworming. Feed a good pre/probiotic (I use Dynamite DynaPro) that balances gut pH and en-courages healthy gut flora. Also consider adding zeolite (I like ACZ Nano brand) and/or montmorillonite clay (I use Dynamite Miracle Clay or Excel) to the diet for several days, starting 24 hours after the chemical dose, to absorb any residual chemical. Work on clearing parasites from the soil. Clean up manure if possi-ble, and compost. Try free range chickens, to break up manure, eat parasites and let the eggs dry out. In small areas, spread diatoma-ceous earth to kill parasites. Rotate pastures, and alternate between browsing and grazing species to break up the life cycle. Certain fertilizers trigger premature egg hatching, killing the parasites. I personally use Dynamite Humi-Zyme or Prescription Treatment For Soils & Crops. In summary, my personal parasite control program is daily DE. I feed good-quality amino acid chelated minerals with adequate cop-per. I rotate pastures with horses and manage parasites in the soil and manure. As needed, I use Dynamite Herbal Tonic and Miracle Clay for 7 days (except on pregnant does). If necessary as a last resort, I use a triple or quadruple dose of pyrantel (per my vet), sometimes for 3 days in a row. I use DynaPro during and after the 7 day herbal program, and add clay after using the pyrantel. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administra-tion, and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any dis-ease. Always consult your veterinarian about any changes to your goat’s health program. Many drugs mentioned above are not FDA approved for use in goats. Consult your veterinarian about non-approved drugs. MGR is holding a yearly High Point Program for MGR registered goats that compete at MGR sanctioned shows. We hope that our members will enjoy this competition. Member owners may nominate as many goats as they choose. Owners fill out the form on the next page, pay $10.00 per goat and then begin showing. Each goat must be entered in the program before they can earn points. Con-tests will be held for bucks, does and wethers. Within 10 days following each show, email your class place results (1 – 5) to [email protected]. As each email reporting wins is processed, you will receive a confirmation by email. If no response, please ask. Your wins will be verified against the class results turned in by each show secre-tary. Owners will receive a monthly list of total points for each contest they have entered. Points will be earned for regular sanctioned classes in which the individual goat is judged (not showmanship, fun classes, or group classes). Placing Points 1 5 2 4 3 3 4 2 5 1 At the end of the show season, the High Point and Reserve High Point ani-mals in each category will win cash jackpots (entry money from each contest divided between the winners).

WELCOME NEW MGR BREEDERS
As of March 23, 2012 there were 451
registered breeders in the Myotonic Goat
Registry. We have breeders in 44 states plus Canada!!!
VOLUME 7, ISSUE 2
The Myotonic Goat Registry was formed in 2005 as a sole ownership registry by Gene McNutt with input from an initial Board of Advisors made up of Dr. Phil Sponenberg and Barbara Roberts. The current Board of Advisors also includes Cindy Bene, Judy Balmer, Jan Likens and Dian Naumann. The owner and Board of Advisors will make decisions concerning the registry and its procedures. This method of governance is meant to provide Myotonic Goat breeders with a registry that will not have frequent changes, and will have the longevity and consistency needed to successfully promote the Myotonic Goat breed, while at the same time make it responsive to the needs and wishes of the breeders. In 2009, Gene retired and the registry was sold to Tara Lawrence. As the Myotonic Goat Registry grows, additional Board of Advisor members may be added in order to more broadly represent the breeders. The owner, along with the Board of Advisors, will be responsible for provid-ing for its own replacements and/or expansions.
The Myotonic Goat Registry takes into consideration all breeders, from pet owners to commercial meat growers. Regardless of which aspect of this breed appeals to you, the Myotonic Goat Registry is the place for all breeders to register their Myotonic Goats.
The Registry will help breeders promote their goats through sales, shows, and advertising, and will educate the public about the Myotonic Goat and its usefulness in a variety of settings.
