We believe in issue-specific interventions in certain circumstances where we have an established relationship with the applicant and where any support forms part of a holistic approach to the development of an individual, for example supporting a family while their child is in school. We work on a system of providing counselling and mentoring alongside any financial assistance, trying to ensure that money is not seen as the only trigger for development, but also values and collaboration and changing stereotypes. This is particularly true in certain cases where gender and religion may be discriminatory factors. We believe in enabling a ‘bottom up democracy’ where the state does not offer a social welfare net for people entrapped by poverty and poor living conditions, or where their human rights have been denied them. In this respect we stand for pluralism and the development of a civil society. From an economic point of view we can use the funds of Moving Mountains to provide social welfare services to the most vulnerable at low cost and higher standards of quality than government. We see this process as collaborative and equitable, enabling people to express their rights and views and help us with our work. This is very much a journey and we work hard to create authorising environments with many committees and groups of people who live and work in the areas where we assist. We act as an operational hub for the projects and programmes that are funded by Moving Mountains UK, and we are the body that defines the need and the policy and the solution in collaboration with local stakeholders. Thus the charity avoids the trap of a foreign NGO or charity imposing external policies on a dependant beneficiary, because we are in the position to determine the legitimacy of the funding and the needs that it addresses.
