  • MLS GAME INFORMATION

COLORADO RAPIDS vs REAL SALT LAKE DICKS SPORTING GOODS PARK, Commerce City, Colo. 8:30 p.m. MT (ESPN2 / Deportes / TSN2) October 14, 2011 (WEEK 31; MLS Game 289)

Yet again, a late-season Rocky Mountain Cup clash will be fraught with playoff implications when the Colorado Rapids play host to Real Salt Lake on Friday evening at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids are still holding onto a wild card spot, giving their ambitions a big boost and ending a long winless run in a 1-0 win against FC Dallas last time out. In the first meeting this season of the Rocky Mountain Cup rivals, Fabian Espndola scored deep into second-half stoppage time to give Real a dramatic 1-0 victory, April 13 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The teams play for the Rocky Mountain Cup, awarded to the winner of the season series by supporters groups from both clubs.

Colorado won the Rocky Mountain Cup the first two years it was on offer before RSL took it in 2007, claiming the trophy in a 1-0 win in the regular season finale at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. Real have held onto the trophy each of the last three seasons, a pair of goals from Alvaro Saborio in stoppage time sealing a dramatic 2-2 draw in the season finale.

Last-day results sent RSL into the MLS Cup Playoffs ahead of their Rocky Mountain rivals in back-to-back years. Real defeated Colorado 3-0, Oct. 24, 2009 at Rio Tinto Stadium, after a Yura Movsisyan goal in the 90th minute of the season finale at Dicks Sporting Goods gave RSL a 1-1 draw in 2008. In 2007, a Robbie Findley goal gave RSL a 1-0 win and again ended the Rapids playoff hopes, though Real also did not qualify.

Once again, late dramatics settled a Rocky Mountain Cup match. Three minutes into stoppage time, Javier Morales lined up a free kick from 25 yards out. His attempt at goal hit the right post and rebounded to Paulo Junior. He was able only to push it forward, but Espindola swung out his leg to drive the ball into the back of the net for the game winner.

REAL SALT LAKE (4-3-1-2): Nick Rimando - Tony Beltran, Jamison Olave, Nat Borchers, Chris Wingert - Andy Williams, Kyle Beckerman, Ned Grabavoy - Javier Morales - Fabian Espindola, Alvaro Saborio (Paulo Jr. 69).

COLORADO RAPIDS The Colorado Rapids put an end to their winless run at five games, defeating FC Dallas 1-0 at Pizza Hut Park on Oct. 1. The Rapids have 45 points from 32 games, sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH

The game's lone goal came in the 25th minute. Sanna Nyassi swung in a corner from the right side and Drew Moor rose up to drive a powerful header into the back of the net, his second goal in as many games.

The Rapids finished the game a man down after Miguel Comminges was sent off in the 74th minute following a second bookable offense, but FCD could not capitalize.

Rapids head coach Gary Smith made one change to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. Brian Mullan came into the side in place of Caleb Folan.

COLORADO RAPIDS (4-4-2): Matt Pickens - Kosuke Kimura, Drew Moor, Marvell Wynne, Miguel Comminges (sent off 74) - Brian Mullan, Pablo Mastroeni, Jeff Larentowicz, Jamie Smith (Tyrone Marshall 77) - Sanna Nyassi (Wells Thompson 81), Omar Cummings (Macoumba Kandji 85).

TEAM NEWS After a split-squad came away from a victory in El Salvador at midweek in the CONCACAF Champions

League, the Rapids won for the first time in league play since Aug. 13. It feels like weve been waiting forever for a week like this. Some big decisions to make, I felt they were the

right ones, and Ive been vindicated in that with the two results that we had, said Rapids head coach Gary Smith.

Said club captain Pablo Mastroeni: Weve been without a [league] win for a while now, and I think finishing off the way we did against San Jose, and not being able to get that second goal, left us a bit empty. The guys going away midweek and really performing in what I think is the most difficult environment that weve played in all year, and coming out with that positive energy coming back to the club, it just lifted all of us playing in this game today. Its a team effort, and were going to need everyone.

The Rapids held on to eighth place overall with the win, still two points ahead of the final wild card spots in the chase for the 10 berths in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

To beat Dallas means that we go that much closer to them, and hopefully puts a little bit more pressure on them to get some results, so were going to try to chase them down, said Rapids head coach Gary Smith. (And) a clean sheet, which is nice always to get.

Center back Drew Moor has scored the last two goals for the Rapids and now has four this season, a career single-season high.

Scoring early goals always gives you confidence, especially when its the first one. I thought we showed great character last week, coming back after going down a goal. This week we showed character the other way, by protecting a lead, which weve had trouble doing at times throughout the season, Moor said. To score an early goal like that, give yourself some confidence, and to see it all the way though the 95 minutes is a huge win.

Omar Cummings joined Jamaica for a pair of international friendlies after the win against FC Dallas, as did midfielder Jeff Larentowicz (USA) and goalkeeper Steward Ceus (Haiti), but Sanna Nyassi declined a call from The Gambia for an African Nations Cup qualifier.

"Even if we win, our chances of qualifying are slim," Nyassi said of his team's outlook. "So I thought it was better to stay here and help my team make the playoffs. I think it's better to stay then to go all the way to Africa and return with tired legs. I talked to the federation and they understood everything and said no problem."

REAL SALT LAKE Real Salt Lake had their losing skid hit four games, dropping a 3-0 decision to Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Thursday evening at BC Place. RSL is in third place in the Western Conference, with 51 points from 32 matches. LAST MATCH

Whitecaps FC were two goals to the good from penalty kicks on either side of halftime. First, in the 43rd minute, RSL midfielder Collen Warner was adjudged to have used his hand to stop Jay DeMerit's header on the line. Warner was sent off and Camilo stepped up to the spot, sending goalkeeper Nick Rimando the wrong way for the opener.

Then eight minutes into the second half, RSL defender Chris Schuler was ruled to have handled the ball in the box after it ricocheted off a teammate, and Camilo again did the honours to double the Vancouver lead.

The home side capped the victory two minutes from end when Nizar Khalfan left fly from outside the area. Rimando managed to get a hand on the shot, but Khalfans strike had too much sting and he could only direct the ball into the corner of his goal.

RSL head coach Jason Kreis made four changes to the team that fell to a 2-1 defeat by the LA Galaxy at The Home Depot Center. Andy Williams and Collen Warner came into the midfield for Yordany Alvarez and Will Johnson, and Paulo Junior and Luis Gil were an all-change strike pair in place of the suspended Fabian Espindola and Alvaro Saborio.

TEAM NEWS Real Salt Lake have followed a five-game winning streak the longest in MLS this season with a four-game

losing slide one short of the season-long and the clubs longest since 2007. Its fair, it is concerning, but we feel we have the leadership in the locker room to overcome that and once we

get everybody back and healthy, we feel good about ourselves, said assistant coach Jeff Cassar. Cassar was the bench boss for the Vancouver match, with head coach Jason Kreis suffering a bout of food

poisoning on gameday and forced to watch the match from the media level. A victory against Colorado, plus the failure of FC Dallas to win any of their remaining matches, and Real Salt

Lake will be guaranteed of a top three spot in the Western Conference and will not have to face a wild card match to open the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Its better to lose now than later. The playoffs are coming so we have to improve right now and figure this out as soon as possible so were ready for the playoffs, said Javier Morales. Its difficult when you lose and weve lost the last three games so its hard to get into good form.

When Collen Warner was sent off vs. Vancouver, it was the fourth red card Real have seen in the last nine games, since Aug. 27.

We have been a little undisciplined whether it has been on set plays or not focusing on the details and again with the red card, with not defending the set play well, silly foul that leads to the set play, Cassar said. What we need is a good week of training to prepare for Colorado.

Already missing some key performers to international duty and suspension, Real were without two further midfielders for the trip to Vancouver. Yordany Alvarez was not able to enter Canada with visa issues, and Arturo Alvarez was not with the team in order to tend to a death in his family.

We were a bit thin in the midfield as with Alvarezs grandmother passing away, so we didnt have as many options as we wanted to, especially down a goal, said Cassar.

Chris Agorsor made his MLS debut, coming on for the final 11 minutes. Cody Arnoux made his second league appearance, his first since Sept. 3, coming on at halftime.

Real will have Jean Alexandre (Haiti), Alvaro Saborio (Costa Rica), Nick Rimando and Kyle Beckerman (both USA) all back from international duty though Beckerman is suspended for the final two league games.

There could be a blow from international matches, however: Will Johnson was forced off early in Canadas win against St. Lucia and excused from the national team before the match vs. Puerto Rico; he is listed as out in the clubs injury report for the Colorado game.

COLORADO RAPIDS vs. REAL SALT LAKE The Colorado Rapids are 8-7-6 all-time against Real Salt Lake, and 5-2-3 when playing in Colorado. This is the second matchup of the season between the Rapids and RSL. On April 13, the Rapids fell 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium on a stoppage time goal by Fabian Espindola. Last minute deciders have become the norm for these matchups, as five of the last six games between the rivals have been affected by goals in the 85th minute or later. Playoff Clinching Scenario The Rapids have just two games remaining in the regular season and currently sit in fifth place in Western Conference. They have the oppor-tunity to clinch a playoff spot on Friday night, but would need help from a few other teams in order to do so. In addition to a Rapids win against Real Salt Lake, Colorado will clinch a playoff berth if one of the follow-ing scenarios occur: -Portland and Houston tie (Oct. 14) OR -New York ties or loses to Kansas City (Oct. 15) OR -D.C. United loses to Vancouver (Oct. 12) Rocky Mountain Cup The Rocky Mountain Cup (RMC) was originally established in 2005 by supporters groups from both clubs in which the winner would be rec-ognized as the best team from the Rocky Mountain Region. The winner is determined by the team that earns the most points in the regular season series. If the points are tied, the winner is decided on aggregate goals. Should goals be tied, the Cup is retained by the winner from the previous year. The Rapids won the first two editions of the tournament in 2005 and 2006. Real Salt Lake earned their first title in 2007 and has held onto the Cup since then. A four-part video series documenting the history of the Rocky Mountain Cup, titled Kings of the Rockies, is available at ColoradoRapids.com. Beckerman Suspended After receiving an additional two game suspension for a red card during Salt Lakes 3-0 loss to Chicago on Sept. 28, midfielder Kyle Becker-man will be unavailable for Fridays Rocky Mountain Cup showdown. Beckerman, who played for the Rapids from 2002 to midway through the 2007 season, has yet to lose the Rocky Mountain Cup. Real Salt Lake Connections RSL midfielder Kyle Beckerman was selected by the Rapids with the 11th overall pick in the 2002 MLS Dispersal Draft from Miami Fusion FC on Feb.11. He was traded to RSL on July 16, 2007 in exchange for midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy. Defender Nat Borchers was signed by the Rapids on March 18, 2003 and made his pro debut on May 23 at Chicago. In 2005, he left to play

abroad for two years and returned to MLS in 2008 when he was ac-quired by RSL via an MLS Player Allocation Lottery on Feb. 14. Borch-ers also played for the Boulder Rapids Reserves (a Colorado Rapids USL Premier Development League affiliate) and at the University of Denver where he played in every game from 1999-2002 (72 games). RSL defender Chris Wingert was acquired by the Rapids from the Co-lumbus Crew on Jan. 20, 2006 in exchange for the Rapids natural third round 2006 MLS SuperDraft selection and a conditional 2007 MLS SuperDraft pick. He was traded to RSL on July 13, 3007 in ex-change for RSLs first round 2008 and second round 2009 MLS Sup-plemental Draft picks. Collen Warner was born and raised in Denver, Colo. and was a mem-ber of the Colorado ODP state team from 2001-04. He played for the Colorado Rush club team for five years. International Duty Goalkeeper Steward Ceus was in goal for both of Haiti's World Cup Qualifying matches, a 7-0 win over the U.S. Virgin Islands on October 7 and in a 2-2 draw with Curucao on Tuesday afternoon. Forward Omar Cummings started in Jamaica's 2-1 loss in a friendly played in Hondu-ras on Tuesday. Midfielder Jeff Larentowicz was an unused substitute in the United States 1-0 win over Honduras in Miami on Saturday but was not on the gameday roster on Tuesday night in a 1-0 loss to Ecua-dor at Red Bull Arena. Honorary Captain Don Brennan will be recognized as the Honorary Captain for the Oct. 14 match against Real Salt Lake and will be honored before kickoff. Brennan, who is a Stage IV lymphoma cancer survivor, recently climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, with his son, Patrick, a Rapids season ticket holder, completing the trek in six days and seven nights. The duo brought with them a Colorado Rapids flag and posed with it in a picture at the summit, which can be seen at ColoradoRapids.com. CONCACAF Champions League On Wednesday, October 19, the Rapids will visit Mexico to take on Santos Laguna in their last Group stage match of the CONCACAF Champions league. Santos defeated the Rapids 4-1 in their first match of the two-leg series on September 14. If the Rapids win this match, they will qualify for the quarterfinals round next year, but with a loss or a tie, Colorado would need Isidro Metapn and Real Espaa to tie their match in order to advance. The match will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer channel at 6:00 p.m. MT Group B Standings: (as of 10/12) Team G W D L P Santos Laguna 5 3 1 1 10 Colorado Rapids 5 2 1 2 7 Isidro Metapan 5 2 0 3 6 Real Espana 5 1 2 2 5

  • Playoff Format In the MLS Cup playoffs, the top three teams from each conference earn spots in the postseason, and the next best four teams qualify as Wild Cards. The Rapids currently occupy the second Wild Card spot, and would host New York Red Bulls in an elimination match to start the playoffs (if the season ended Oct. 12). Colorado Rapids going Pink In support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Colorado Rapids will incorporate the color pink into the October 14 match against Real Salt Lake at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. Among many initiatives, the team will play with a special pink adidas match ball and wear pink arm-bands during the game, and special pink rally towels will also be distrib-uted at the gates to all fans at the stadium. The efforts are part of the Rapids work with the Colorado Cancer Coalition in October, and during both home games in October, fans can participate in fundraising efforts at the Rapids Community Relations table at the top of Section 129. Rapids Reserves take on Real Salt Lake Reserves On Saturday morning, the Rapids Reserves will face RSL Reserves at 11:00 a.m. on Dicks Sporting Goods Park Field 20 in their last match of the season. The Rapids are 3-5-1 in the Reserve league and are fifth in the Central/Mountain Division. Forward Quincy Amarikwa leads the reserves in scoring with six goals, three of which were scored in the 5-1 win over FC Dallas on Oct. 2, and two assists in six games played. Rapids host Passback Equipment drive The Colorado Rapids will host a Passback Equipment drive at Dicks Sporting Goods at Flatirons Crossing from 2:00 4:00 p.m. on Satur-day, Oct. 15. Rapids players and a mascot will help Soccer Dreams Without Borders, A Precious Child, and Broomfield Soccer Club collect new and slightly used soccer equipment to donate to children and fam-ilies both in the Denver metro area and throughout the world. Ironman Moor Defender Drew Moor set an MLS record among field players on August 27 at Chicago Fire, playing the full 90 minutes in his 69th consecutive league match. However, by picking up his fifth yellow card of the sea-son in the match, Moor received a mandatory one match suspension and had to miss the Sept. 9 game at the LA Galaxy. Moors streak began on August 6, 2009 and consisted of 6,210 consecutive minutes of MLS regular-season action. Shutouts Goalkeeper Matt Pickens has recorded 21 career shutouts for the Rap-ids (most recently the 1-0 victory over FC Dallas on October 1), and is currently in second place for Colorados all-time shutouts record. He needs four more to catch the leader, Joe Cannon, who earned 25 shut-outs for the Rapids from 2003 to 2006.

Injury Update Anthony Wallace has begun rehab for his right knee surgery that will cause him to miss roughly three months while recovering. Conor Casey continues to recover from his season-ending injury, a ruptured left achilles tendon, suffered on July 16 at Seattle Sounders. 300 Club On August 20, Pablo Mastroeni started his 300th career match and became only the third MLS player to do so. He already leads the league for most all-time games started by an active MLS player. Tyrone Mar-shall holds second place on the list followed by Brian Mullan at#3 . Mastroeni played his 300th career match and his 200th Rapids game on June 18 against LA only seven other players have played 300 MLS matches and at least 200 with one team. On May 7, Tyrone Mar-shall became the 13th player in MLS history to play in 300 regular sea-son matches. Season Streaks The Rapids set a team record going unbeaten in nine games (2-0-7) from April 30 to June 11. The LA Galaxy snapped the streak with a 3-1 victory at Dicks Sporting Goods Park on June 18. Previously, the long-est unbeaten streak was eight matches from April 25 to June 24, 2009. The Rapids tied six consecutive matches from May 7 to June 4, which is the longest streak in a single MLS season and matched the all-time MLS record (San Jose recorded six ties over the conclusion of the 2004 season and the start of 2005).
