COLUMBUS CREW vs REAL SALT LAKE COLUMBUS CREW STADIUM, Columbus, Ohio 7:30 p.m. ET (ONN; KMYU 2.2) June 8, 2011 (WEEK 13; MLS Game 118)

Real Salt Lake kick off a two-game Eastern swing by paying a visit to the Columbus Crew when the clubs face off Wednesday at Crew Stadium. The Crew are starting a two-game homestand of their own, coming back for a second draw in a row in a 1-1 result at New York last weekend. After seeing their two-year league home unbeaten streak come to an end, RSL returned to their winning ways in Sandy last weekend with a 2-0 win against Vancouver. REFEREE: Ricardo Salazar. The Crew have won the last four meetings between the teams at Crew Stadium in league play. But Real did win in Columbus in the 2009 Eastern Conference Semifinals on their way to victory in MLS Cup.

The Crew last won at Real Salt Lake in 2006, a 1-0 win at Rice-Eccles Stadium. RSL has won the last three home meetings between the clubs. Columbus has never won in three trips all-time to Rio Tinto Stadium in league and MLS Cup play.

Coaches record: Robert Warzycha v RSL: P5 W3 L2 D0… Jason Kreis vs. CLB: P7 W3 L4 D0 COLUMBUS CREW The Columbus Crew saw their winless streak stretched to five games, but came back for a dramatic second consecutive draw, in a 1-1 tie with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday evening at Red Bull Arena. The Crew have 15 points from 12 games on the season, starting the week in a tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH

The Red Bulls opened the scoring after just nine minutes. Collecting a long ball from Jan Gunnar Solli, Luke Rodgers spun away from a couple of defenders before laying the ball square to Mehdi Ballouchy, who chipped a shot past hard-charging Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer.

But two minutes into stoppage time, Crew rookie Justin Meram raced New York right back Matt Kassel and found fellow rookie Rich Balchan making a hard run into the box, and he then fired home a shot past a helpless Greg Sutton for the equalizer.

Crew head coach Robert Warzycha made one change to the team that settled for a 3-3 draw with Chivas USA at Columbus Crew Stadium. Dilly Duka replaced Robbie Rogers, away on international duty.

COLUMBUS CREW (4-1-3-2): William Hesmer - Sebastian Miranda, Chad Marshall, Julius James, Josh Gardner (Shaun Francis 86) - Rich Balchan - Eddie Gaven, Emmanuel Ekpo, Dilly Duka (Justin Meram 74) - Tommy Heinemann (Jeff Cunningham 41), Andres Mendoza.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

TEAM NEWS The RSL match starts a two-game week with both games at Crew Stadium. The Crew are 0-2-3 in their last five

matches, have not won since April 30, and are now 0-3-3 with three goals scored and nine allowed away from home.

“I think we played well enough to deserve a point,” Warzycha said. “I think we were a good attacking team. I think we were going for the goal.”

The winning goal came in a pair of rookies who played in the Big Ten Conference who were drafted in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft – Rich Balchan (Indiana University, No. 12 overall) and Justin Meram (University of Michigan, No. 15 overall).

Balchan was making his first start in a defensive midfield role after starting 10 of the Crew’s first 11 games at left back. His goal came on his first career shot in MLS, after 990 minutes.

"It's all just instinctive," Balchan said. "The ball was perfectly put onto my foot. I just kind of opened my foot up. I don't do much finishing in practice. I don't know what happened. I just know it went in."

Meram was supposed to replace Balchan in the 74th minute, but when midfielder Dilly Duka suffered a sprained ankle, he could not continue. Duka could miss the RSL match as a result.

“I sprained it in the first 10 minutes of the game,” Duka said. “I saw a sub coming and I think they were going to push me into the middle so I told Bobby I had to come out. I knew I couldn’t contribute anymore. I knew I couldn’t track on defense and couldn’t do anything on offense because my ankle swelled up. It’s huge.”

In addition, starting forward Tommy Heinemann left in the first half with a left hamstring injury, replaced by Jeff Cunningham.

After scoring two goals the week before, Andres Mendoza could not find the back of the net from two good chances in the second half vs. New York. "We have to look at the positive," Warzycha said. "He's in the right place at the right time. Obviously, finishing is another (matter), but at least he's getting chances."

REAL SALT LAKE Real Salt Lake returned to their winning ways, defeating Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-0 on Saturday evening at Rio Tinto Stadium. RSL starts the week sitting in fourth place in the Western Conference, with 20 points from 10 matches. LAST MATCH

Real took the lead after 32 minutes. Kyle Beckerman threaded a pass to Jean Alexandre, just beating the offside trap, and the Haitian held off a couple of defenders before cutting toward goal and lifting a shot over Whitecaps FC 'keeper Joe Cannon

Then in the 79th minute, Alexandre evaded a midfield challenge and flicked it into space for Fabian Espíndola, who raced onto the pass then finished clinically from inside the area, putting a low shot into the right side of the net.

RSL coach Jason Kreis made four changes to the side that fell 2-1 to Seattle Sounders FC at Rio Tinto Stadium. Chris Schuler and Chris Wingert came into the back four for the suspended Jamison Olave and Robbie Russell, and Collen Warner and Nelson Gonzalez started in midfield for Andy Williams and Will Johnson.

REAL SALT LAKE (4-4-2): Nick Rimando - Tony Beltran, Chris Schuler, Nat Borchers, Chris Wingert - Collen Warner (Artur Aghasyan 87), Ned Grabavoy, Kyle Beckerman, Nelson Gonzalez (Andy Williams 67) - Jean Alexandre (Luis Gil 81), Fabian Espindola.

TEAM NEWS Real put an end to their three-game MLS winless run and scored two goals in a game for the first time since a

2-0 win April 9 vs. New England. RSL had scored just three goals total in their previous six league matches; they outshot Vancouver 24-6 on the night.

“We have to work that hard if we want to win games,” Kreis said. “When we don’t work that hard, we won’t win games. And when we do work that hard, we’ll win most of them.”

With RSL hampered by a host of injuries to strikers, Jean Alexandre started a second consecutive match at forward and scored his first professional goal and added his first MLS assist. He was named MLS Player of the Week.

“I’ve been dreaming about my first goal, and in my mind, it’s always like a scrappy ball that hits me off the head and goes in the net,” Alexandre said. “Actually, it was a decent goal, so I’m happy for that.”

Alexandre has been a holding midfielder for the vast majority of his time as a professional, until the start up top in the 2-1 loss to Seattle.

"That was a world class pass, that took me by surprise, it took everybody by surprise ‘cause that pass was very difficult pass [for Kyle Beckerman] to make," said Alexandre. "I need a lot more work, especially my movement. I've got to get use to making runs instead of just shuffling back and forth for the ball like I'm playing center mid."

Missing as many as seven regulars because of injury, suspension and national team duty, RSL had only six available substitutes, one short of the prescribed limit.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“After losing to Seattle last weekend, we knew we had something to prove this weekend,” defender Nat Borchers said. “We knew we had to come out and prove ourselves again to the fans, make a statement to the league and get those three points.”

Armenian forward Artur Aghasyan, the cousin of former RSL forward Yura Movsisyan, made his MLS debut, playing the final three minutes after signing with the club on May 27.

Alexandre’s strike partner, Fabian Espíndola, scored his second goal of the MLS season and first since April 13. He’s made back-to-back starts after completely missing the two previous league games.

“It was very gratifying to see (Espíndola get the goal). In the last two games, the ground that he has covered and the balls that he has chased down … he’s taking a few more risks than typical,” Kreis said. “I think he’s doing that because he knows that someone has to make a difference for us right now and he is trying to be that guy that will do it.”

TODAY’S MATCHHot off its thrilling stoppage time 1-1 draw in New York, last Saturday night, the Crew (3-3-6, 15 pts.) returns home to face Real Salt Lake (6-2-2, 20 pts.), in the first of a two-game home-stand at Crew Stadium tonight.

The Black & Gold looks to defend its home unbeaten streak and extend it to seven games. In the last home match (May 28), the Crew came from behind three times to secure a 3-3 tie against Chivas USA. Forward Andres Mendoza scored twice and midfielder Emmanuel Ekpo added a goal and an assist.

Fans can expect more of what they saw in New York, where defender Rich Balchan, who was placed in the holding midfielder position for the match, connected on a cross by rookie forward Justin Meram and one-touched a ball past Red Bulls ‘keeper Greg Sutton for the 1-1 tie, with only seconds left in the match.

The Black & Gold’s record against Salt Lake, in regular season competition is 7-4-1 and 5-1-0 when playing at Crew Stadium. The last time the teams met in regular season play, the Crew won 1-0 behind penalty shot conversion by Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

Real Salt Lake, who eliminated the Crew in the CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinal round back in March, enters the match on the heels of a 2-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at Rio Tinto Stadium last Saturday (June 4).

Led offensively by Fabian Espindola and Paulo Araujo Jr., who have two goals each on the season, Salt Lake, will have to do without several players who are with their respective national teams participating in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando (USA), midfielder Will Johnson (Canada) and forwards Arturo Alvarez (El Salvador) and Alvaro Saborio (Costarica) will all be unavailable for the match. Forward Javier Morales will also be unavailable after he suffered an ankle injury in a match against Chivas USA on May 7.

The Crew will only have four days of rest before returning to the pitch as it hosts the Chicago Fire on Sunday, June 12 at 4 p.m. at Crew Stadium.

CREW MIDFIELDER ROBBIE ROGERS BEGAN GOLD CUP ON TUESDAY AGAINST CANADACrew midfielder Robbie Rogers has been named to the 23-man U.S. National Team roster for the 2011 CON-CACAF Gold Cup. 6Six Crew players have seen action in every game so far this season including defenders Chad Marshall and Julius James and goalkeeper William Hesmer who have played every minute of every game.

1The game-tying goal by Rich Balchan was his first as a professional. Blachan also racked up his first shot, his first shot on goal and, unfortunately, his first caution.

4Balchan scored only four goals during his tenure at Indiana. All those goals were scored during his freshman year. It took Balchan four years to score his next one.

Chad Marshall (3 times, weeks 2, 3 and 4), Dilly Duka (week 5), Emilio Renteria (week 7), Tommy Heinemann (week 10) and Andres Mendoza (week 11). They join Crew coach Robert Warzycha who was named Manager of the Week in week 5.

18 vs 30The Crew have only gotten 18 cautions so far this season with Julius James leading the pack with four. Crew opponents have warranted 30 cautions in the first 12 matches of the season. The Crew has been shown the fifth least amount of cautions behind RSL (12), Houston (16), Dallas and New York (both with 17 cautions).

5 vs 0Five red cards have been shown to Crew opponents this season: against Dallas (4/1), Sporting KC (4/16), To-ronto FC (4/23), San Jose (5/14) and Chivas USA (5/28). The Crew is one of five teams who has not seen red this year. New York, Chicago, Seattle and Portland are the other four. Vancouver leads the league in red cards with four.

13 and 1The number of goals and assists needed by the Black & Gold to reach important achievements. The Crew is only 13 goals away from scoring its 700th goal and only one assist away from 750.

37The number of fouls suffered by Eddie Gaven through 12 games this season. The total fouls suffered by Gaven in 2010 was 54 (third place overall). Gaven leads Portland’s Kenny Cooper by five fouls suffered.

414The number of consecutive minutes without allowing a goal from March 19 to April 23. This number is good for the league lead this season.

FORTRESS RECLAIMED v VANCOUVER: Real Salt

Lake completed its recent homestand Saturday with a dominating 2-0 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC, outshooting the expansion side 24-6 and scoring multiple goals for the first time since April 9 @ NE … The first career goal by MF Jean Alexandre in the 32‟ – set up by Captain Kyle Beckerman – gave RSL a 1-0 halftime lead, also its first since April 9 @ NE … In the 79‟ Alexandre set up FW Fabian Espíndola with the insurance goal to lead RSL … The Espíndola goal was his second of the year and the 18

th of his RSL career, vaulting

him past teammate and close friend Javier Morales and head coach Jason Kreis (17 each) into sole possession of 3

rd place in the RSL scoring annals, one behind Jeff

Cunningham (19) and 11 behind leader Robbie Findley (29) … GK Nick Rimando made four saves on the evening, including two spectacular ones in the final 10 minutes to preserve the shutout and improve his personal regular-season mark at Rio Tinto Stadium to 25-1-9 … The vaunted RSL defense has 7 shutouts in 10 games this season, allowing just 4 goals thus far … Wednesday’s game between RSL and Columbus kicks off at 5:30 p.m. MT and will air live statewide via KMYU 2.2 / Comcast 22 / Dish 12 and the MLS Direct Kick Package, and also on RSL‟s official radio partners – ESPN 700 Sports Radio and ESPN Deportes 1600 AM / Juan 106.1 FM …

REVISITING CREW STADIUM: Back on Feb. 22,

RSL kicked off its 2011 with the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League QuarterFinals, a series won by RSL on a 4-1 aggregate after the teams played to a 0-0 draw 3 ½ months ago on the frozen Crew Stadium tundra … RSL DF Tony Beltran and DF Nat Borchers each saw red cards in the early part of the second half, yet the Crew enjoyed only a one-man advantage as referee Jair Marrufo also tossed Columbus FW Emilio Renteria for his altercation with Borchers … All-time, RSL is 1-5-0 at Crew Stadium in regular-season MLS play, with the lone victory coming in the club‟s first-ever come-from-behind win on the road back in August, 2006 … Crew Stadium is also site of an additional loss in U.S. Open Cup qualifying action back in 2008, a 10-man RSL losing 0-2 after a Kovalenko red card … However, RSL did win its road leg in Ohio in the 2009 MLS Cup Playoff Eastern Conference Semifinals, coming back from a 1-2 deficit on aggregate to win 4-2 with RSL heroics supplied by former Crew playmaker Andy Williams … Last year, RSL lost 0-1 at Columbus on a Schelotto PK when DF Robbie Russell was adjudged to have fouled in the rainy conditions …

REAL SALT LAKE @ COLUMBUS CREW – WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 2011

LAST MEETING vs CREW: In the CCL QuarterFinal

series‟ decisive second leg on March 1, RSL FW Alvaro Saborio scored in minute 23 and MF Javier Morales found the back of the net on either side of halftime, his tallies sandwiched around an early second-half goal by Crew FW Andres Mendoza that briefly cut the RSL aggregate lead to 2-1 … After Morales gave RSL breathing room in the 77

th minute off a Paulo Jr. assist, it

was Andy Williams who iced the series with RSL‟s fourth goal on a wonderful, looping free kick in 2

nd-half stoppage

time …

SECOND OF THE THREE-GAME WEEKS: Real Salt

Lake continues on to Philadelphia for a game Saturday afternoon following Wednesday night‟s Columbus match, the second time this season the team has played three games in 8 days or fewer … Earlier this year, RSL played at Saprissa, at New England and then home to Colorado, winning the latter two and advancing with a goal in the 1-2 loss in Costa Rica … In the Jason Kreis era, RSL has played 3 games in a week a total of 17 previous times (in all competitions), registering an 22-14-15 record, including Saturday‟s win over Vancouver … The list: 2011: 4/5 @ SAP (1-2 L); 4/9 @ NE (2-0 W); 4/13 v COL (1-0 W) 2-1-0 6/4 v VAN (2-0 W); 6/8 @ CLB; 6/11 @ PHI 6/18 v DC / 6/22 @ CHI / 6/25 v DC 7/30 v CLB / 8/3 @ KC / 8/6 v NY

SIX WINS SAYS SOMETHING: Despite the pall cast

over RSL‟s recent week‟s with the CONCACAF Final loss and the long-term injury to Javier Morales, Jason Kreis wants to remind his locker room, as well as the fans and media interested in MLS that the team’s 6-2-2 record and 2.00 points-per-game average are MLS-best marks of which RSL should be proud … RSL‟s six wins in its first 10 games is a historically positive start for a team that finished 5-22-5 in its inaugural 2005 season, and one that has also had a six-win season (2007) and a pair of 10-win seasons (2006, 2008) … In the team‟s three previous playoff years, it did not record its sixth win until May 29 (2010), July 24 (2009) and July 12 (2008) … Saturday’s victory over Vancouver puts RSL one point ahead of its 2010 pace (when it was 6-3-1 after 10 games) and well ahead of its Cup-winning 2009 campaign, when win #6 did not come until PIONEER DAY on July 24 …

RECORD-SETTING DEFENSE … : RSL has allowed

just four goals in its first 10 MLS games this season for a stellar average of 0.40 GAA, which would project to just 13 goals allowed total over a 34-game season … The only two goals conceded by the RSL defense this year prior to the May 28 Seattle loss were Juan Pablo Angel‟s 81‟ rebound in RSL‟s 4-1 win over LA on March 26, and the Kenny Cooper goal on April 30 @ POR … This season‟s torrid pace still trails the Galaxy‟s stinginess a year ago, as Donovan Ricketts and LA allowed just two goals during their first 10 games … The fewest goals allowed through 8 / 9 & 10 games in MLS history:

THROUGH GAMES

YR TEAM 8 9 10 FULL

2010 Los Angeles Galaxy 2 2 2 26

2009 Chivas USA 3 3 5 31

2011 Real Salt Lake 2 4 4

2000 Kansas City Wizards 4 4 4 29

2011 New York Red Bulls 3 6 8

2011 Philadelphia Union 4 6 7

2007 New York Red Bulls 4 7 8 45

Last year, RSL allowed just 20 goals in the 30-game regular season, setting a new standard in MLS annals and breaking the 2007 Houston Dynamo record …

… BUT DOES IT WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS?: Real

Salt Lake was one of four 2010 MLS teams – RSL (0.67 goals per game), LA Galaxy (0.87), FC Dallas (0.93) and the New York Red Bulls (0.97) – to allow less than a goal per game … Prior to 2010, just seven teams total in league history boasted < 1.00 GAA, two of which won it all (KC – 2000 & HOU – 2007) …

REAL SALT LAKE @ COLUMBUS CREW – WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 2011

ALEXANDRE THE GREAT: RSL MF-turned-FW Jean

Alexandre was named the MLS Player of the Week on Monday for his 1-goal, 1-assist night on Saturday vs. VAN, celebrating his first appearances on an MLS scoresheet with the weekly honor … Alexandre joins RSL MF Javier Morales, who won the award back in Week 2, on the 2011 list, which boasts 12 different players during the season‟s first three months … The pair of goals vs. VAN, both created by Alexandre – matched the team‟s total of two goals scored in its last six MLS games combined, after RSL had struck for 17 goals in its previous 8 contests … Alexandre‟s first-half goal marked the first time RSL found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes since April 9 @ NE, which was also the last time Jason Kreis‟ team scored multiple goals …

CLEAN SHEET CRAZINESS FOR RSL: RSL GK

Nick Rimando recorded his 80th career shutout Saturday

vs VAN, 44 of which have now come in the RSL Claret-and-Cobalt … Rimando has six of RSL‟s seven MLS clean sheets in 2011 (Reynish, April 9 @ NE) … Rimando also had two shutouts in CONCACAF play earlier this year at Columbus and vs. Saprissa … Rimando‟s shutout streak was snapped at 409 minutes May 28 v SEA, the 3

rd

longest current run in MLS (Hartman, DAL, 599; Hesmer, CLB, 414) …

ROAD WARRIORS, PREPARE: After Saturday‟s first-

ever meeting against the Whitecaps, RSL plays three of its next four MLS contests on the road … On June 8/11, RSL travels to Columbus and Philadelphia in a Wed/Sat East Coast run, then returns to Rio Tinto Stadium on June 18 vs. D.C. United before a midweek encounter at Chicago on June 22 … RSL has dropped only one of its last 10 road games in MLS play, and only four of its last 17 overall if you include CONCACAF and MLS Cup Playoff road matches …

SHEDDING THE “ROAD WOE” REPUTATION:

The nine-game RSL road run that was snapped at Portland on April 30 was tied for the second longest in MLS annals, even with the 2004 Columbus Crew and 2007-08 Chicago Fire and trailing only last year‟s FC Dallas mark of 12 straight without a loss from May 1 – Sept. 25, 2010… This recent run of road success – marred by the playoff loss @DAL, yet enhanced by road results @ Columbus, @ Saprissa and @ Monterrey in CCL play – marks the team‟s first-ever nine-game undefeated streak away from home, placing the squad‟s all-time regular season road mark at 16-56-23 (.288; 87 GF / 161 GA) … Since Kreis took over, RSL‟s MLS road mark is 12-32-18, with the four road wins in 2010 doubling the two earned in each of the 2007-09 seasons … Four games down (2-1-1, 7 pts), 13 to go in 2011 …

HOME COOKING RESUMES: Then Rio Tinto Stadium

again sees a massive stretch of home games, as RSL hosts six of its 8 MLS games from June 25 to August 6 on the Wasatch Front … Visitors in that period include TOR, NE, DAL, SJ, CLB and NY … On top of that stretch, RSL has the potential to host two additional games in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tourney, on June 28 and July 12 …

SIGHTS NOW SET ON U.S. OPEN CUP: Now that

the team‟s foray in the 2010/11 CONCACAF tourney is complete, RSL will play 11 league matches from April 30 – June 25 before participating in another non-MLS competition in 2011, advancing automatically into the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 by virtue of its #2 overall MLS regular-season finish last year … For the first time since 2006, RSL will not have to participate in MLS “qualifiers” for the Open Cup … Due to the team‟s CCL run this Spring, along with the new 34-game MLS regular season and the Open Cup advancement, RSL is guaranteed to play at least 41 games during the 2011 calendar year before the playoffs, one shy of last year‟s club-record total of 42 games played …

DEFENSE THE FOUNDATION … : While RSL was

the highest-scoring team in MLS last year with 45 goals in 30 games for an average of 1.50 goals/game, defense takes precedence in Jason Kreis‟ system … Just last year, RSL amassed two of the top 5 shutout streaks in MLS history:

CONSECUTIVE MINUTES WITHOUT ALLOWING GOAL

TEAM MIN START END Houston Dynamo 727 6/10/2007 7/22/2007 Kansas City Wizards 681 4/19/2000 5/27/2000 Real Salt Lake 568 8/11/2010 9/25/2010

Real Salt Lake 567 5/29/2010 7/17/2010 FC Dallas 531 5/01/2011 5/28/2011

… BUT WHERE’S THE OFFENSE?: The back-to-

back scoreless draws on May 14 v HOU and May 22 @ DAL gave RSL four shutouts suffered in five games prior to last week‟s 1-2 loss v SEA, after suffering only four clean sheets in the prior 26 games … RSL was Major League Soccer‟s highest-scoring team in 2010 with 45 goals (1.50 GPG) and also averaged 2.16 GPG in its CONCACAF run, with 26 goals in 12 games, best in the tournament …

MORE ATTACKING ANEMIA: The back-to-back

shutouts suffered on April 27 (0-1 v. Monterrey) and April 30 (0-1 @ POR) marked the first time RSL has failed to score in consecutive games in nearly two years, as the team actually went three straight MLS games without scoring back in May of 2009, a drought that started with an 0-1 loss @ Chivas … Then the back-to-back shutouts occurred again less than 3 weeks later in the “Texas Two-Step” against HOU & DAL …

REAL SALT LAKE @ COLUMBUS CREW – WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 2011

HISTORY v FIRST-YEAR OPPONENTS: Real Salt

Lake has now posted an 8-7-4 all-time mark when facing an MLS expansion opponent in its first year, but is only 3-5-0 when seeing a club for the first time … The list: YR TM 1

st MTG OTHER

2011 VAN W, 2-0 @ VAN 7/16/11

2011 POR L, 0-1 @ v POR 10/22/11

TURF WOES: The Timbers loss dropped RSL‟s all-time

turf mark to 2-8-5 all-time in regular-season road matches (both wins coming at Gillette Stadium vs. NE in the last 6 months) on the fake stuff, outscored 10-23 on aggregate … Despite playing on the hardened Rice-Eccles turf for nearly four seasons, the historic MLS Cup 2009 result at Qwest Field was RSL’s first-ever win on an artificial surface on the road in the team‟s five-year history to that point, although that game is officially recorded as a 1-1 draw decided on PKs … In 2005, RSL also dropped a U.S. Open Cup game at Minnesota on turf by a 4-6 scoreline …

WHO ELSE IS MISSING @ CLB / PHI?: In addition to

perennial starters Johnson and Saborio and utility man Alvarez (all due to Gold Cup), RSL will be without MF Javier Morales (R ankle surgery), FW Paulo Jr. (hip flexor) …

YOUNG BOYS STEP UP, SEIZE THE DAY: The

void caused by injury, national team duty and suspension allows opportunity for several of RSL‟s younger players to get quality minutes with the first team, as DF Chris Schuler, MF Nelson Gonzalez and MF Collen Warner are obvious choices, along with newly-minted target forward – and reigning MLS Player of the Week – Jean Alexandre … Gonzalez‟ goal against Seattle on May 28 – his second MLS goal and third in an RSL uniform – was set up by teen phenom Luis Gil, who has impressed at U.S. U-18 and U-20 camps this year in addition to his RSL duty …

REINFORCEMENTS UP TOP: On May 27, in light of

the Gold Cup call-ups (Alvarez, Saborio) and injuries to RSL attackers (Paulo Jr., Espindola, Toia), RSL announced the signing of FW Artur Aghasyan, who like his cousin, former RSL FW Yura Movsisyan, wears jersey #14, dressed vs. Seattle on May 28 and played final 3 minutes last week vs. Vancouver …

NEAGLE THE LATEST – & FIRST IN AWHILE:

During Real Salt Lake‟s early years, it seemed like fans‟ hearts were routinely broken by an opposing goal from a player few had ever heard of … Between 2005-07, the club’s turmoil-filled early years, 20 different players scored their first-ever MLS goal against the hapless Claret-and-Cobalt … In the Kreis era, as the team matured, that trend slowed to a trickle – only three players in 2008-09 found the back of the net for the first time vs. RSL … Back on May 28, Seattle‟s Lamar Neagle became the first player in two years to bury his first career tally against RSL , with his bending 84‟ blast that proved to be the game winner … For 10 of the 24 players, the goal is their lone career MLS score (as of June 1, 2011, indicated by an *) … The list:

REAL SALT LAKE @ COLUMBUS CREW – WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 2011

GOLD CUP ABSENCES AFFECT RSL: Four

members of the Real Salt Lake roster – Arturo Alvarez (El Salvador), Will Johnson (Canada), Nick Rimando (United States) and Álvaro Saborío (Costa Rica) – have been named to their respective national team rosters in advance of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, taking place across the United States from June 5-25 … Both Alvarez and Saborío departed the RSL camp following the May 22 0-0 draw at Dallas to join their teams ahead of warm-up friendlies, while Johnson played with RSL last weekend before reporting to the Canadian side … Rimando will remain with his RSL teammates and serve “on call” for U.S. Men‟s National Team head coach Bob Bradley as the squad‟s third goalkeeper during the three-week tournament … Alvarez and Saborio see their teams face off on June 9, as El Salvador plays Costa Rica in Charlotte, while Johnson and Rimando could see each other when Canada plays the United States on June 7 in Detroit … Real Salt Lake will go without the services of its Gold Cup participants for at least next four MLS matches against Seattle (May 28), Vancouver (June 4), at Columbus (June 8) and at Philadelphia (June 11) during group play … In addition, RSL will potentially miss a portion of the quartet for additional contests on June 18 against D.C. United, June 22 @ Chicago and June 25 against Toronto FC during the Gold Cup‟s knockout phase … Arturo Alvarez – El Salvador

Alvarez joins the El Salvador National Team for the third time in 2011, following his five appearances for La Selecta in January‟s Copa Centroamericana – during which he helped El Salvador qualify for the Gold Cup via a fourth-place finish in the seven-team field – and in a pair of friendlies at Cuba and against Jamaica in late March … The 25-year-old product of the U.S. Youth National Team system has now registered 16 “caps” in the white-and-blue of El Salvador since making his debut for the side in 2009 … Did not play Sunday vs Mexico due to hamstring injury, but trained with El Salvador on Monday and could see action on Thursday against RSL teammate Saborio and Costa Rica … El Salvador Gold Cup Schedule (Group A) June 5 – 0 : 5 Mexico – Cowboys Stadium / Arlington, TX – 6:00 p.m. MT June 9 v. Costa Rica – Bank of America Stadium / Charlotte, NC – 5:00 p.m. MT June 12 v. Cuba – Soldier Field / Chicago, IL – 4:00 p.m. MT

Will Johnson – Canada

At just the age of 24, Johnson has recently become a mainstay in the Canadian first-choice line-up, earning 15 caps for the Maple Leafs since his senior team debut at the age of 18 back in November 2005. Johnson‟s most recent appearances for Canada both came on the European continent, as the midfielder earned starting nods for coach Stephen Hart‟s side in friendlies at Greece on Feb. 9 (0-1 L) and against Belarus in Turkey on March 29 (1-0 W). Canada Gold Cup Schedule (Group C) June 7 v. United States – Ford Field / Detroit, MI – 6:00 p.m. MT June 11 v. Guadeloupe – Raymond James Stadium / Tampa, FL – 4:00 p.m. MT June 14 v. Panama – Livestrong Sporting Park / Kansas City, KS – 5:00 p.m. MT

Nick Rimando – United States

Thanks to his standout performances for the Claret-and-Cobalt in recent seasons, Rimando has become Bradley‟s MLS-based goalkeeper of choice following a six-year hiatus from national team duty … The 31-year-old‟s most recent cap – his fifth for the Red, White & Blue – came back on Jan. 22, when he notched a shutout first 45 minutes in the USA‟s 1-1 draw with Chile in a friendly at The Home Depot Center, following his stint in the USA‟s annual January training camp in Southern California … Rimando, one of seven MLS players on the 23-man USA Gold Cup roster, has compiled a 2-0-0 record and 0.29 GAA (1 goal allowed in 315 minutes) in his five contests with the U.S.‟s senior side … United States Gold Cup Schedule (Group C)

June 7 v. Canada – Ford Field / Detroit, MI – 6:00 p.m. MT June 11 v. Panama – Raymond James Stadium / Tampa, FL – 6:00 p.m. MT June 14 v. Guadeloupe – Livestrong Sporting Park / Kansas City, KS – 7:00 p.m. MT

Álvaro Saborío – Costa Rica

A focal point in attack for the Ticos for several years, Saborío‟s international resume continues to grow having bagged 22 goals across 64 appearances at the senior level since his debut in 2004 … A veteran of both the 2004 Olympics and the 2006 World Cup, Saborío recently celebrated his 29th birthday in style by scoring the first-ever goal in the inaugural match at the new Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose during a friendly against China on March 26 … His most recent cap came three days later at Estadio Nacional, when he logged the full 90 minutes against global powerhouse Argentina in a 0-0 draw … Scored 2nd of 5 Costa Rica goals in Sunday‟s 5-0 win over Cuba, finding back of net in 41‟ after hitting woodwork and seeing apparent goal disallowed due to offside in one-way first half vs. Cubans … Removed from game after 70 minutes … Costa Rica Gold Cup Schedule (Group A) June 5 – 5 : 0 Cuba – Cowboys Stadium / Arlington, TX – 4:00 p.m. MT June 9 v. El Salvador – Bank of America Stadium / Charlotte, NC – 5:00 p.m. MT June 12 v. Mexico – Soldier Field / Chicago, IL – 6:00 p.m. MT

MAYDAY, MAYDAY: 12-MONTH RUN OF

SUCCESS ON MULTIPLE FRONTS: Despite the pair

of difficult 0-1 losses vs. Monterrey and at Portland in the last week of April, Real Salt Lake performed exceptionally in the 45 games played between May 1, 2010 and April 30, 2011, losing only six times in that stretch, the rough equivalent of a season-and-a-half … Across MLS regular season, MLS Cup Playoff and CONCACAF Champions League games, Jason Kreis‟ team posted an impressive mark of 26-6-13 and outscored opponents 75-33 since May 1, 2010 … RSL would have earned 91 points in this stretch … The MLS equivalents: (reg.-season games only) TEAM GAME 1 GAME 45 PTS

Prior to last April 30 at Portland, the lone MLS losses both came on the road at Dallas on July 17 and Oct. 30 (playoffs), sandwiched around the bizarre 4-5 loss at Cruz Azul … The fourth loss could hardly considered a setback, as that was the 1-2 decision at Saprissa which enabled RSL advanced to the CCL Final … RSL then dropped the 0-1 home game to Monterrey to snap the 37-game “all-competition” Rio Tinto Stadium streak …

Johnson‟s 87‟ game-winning goal vs. Chivas a month ago marked the 16

TIME FOR A NEW STREAK: In Major League

Soccer‟s 16-year history, there have been 25 double-digit unbeaten regular-season streaks for its teams … Real Salt Lake’s historic 2010 season saw the squad amass runs of both 10 and 14 games, with the mid-April win vs. Colorado extending the latter streak to 18 games without a loss, one of the top three streaks in MLS history, just one game shy of matching the League standard … A year ago, FC Dallas matched the Columbus Crew’s 19-game run by not losing for 4 ½ months, then saw it crash to a halt by dropping an 0-2 decision at Rio Tinto Stadium … Dallas had the last laugh, however, ousting RSL in the teams‟ first-round MLS Cup Playoff matchup with a 3-2 aggregate win in October … The list:

MORALES A MARKED MAN IN MLS: Since arriving

in MLS back in August of 2007, the Argentine playmaker Javier Morales has played 116 games for RSL (93 MLS regular-season, 8 playoff, 3 Open Cup, 12 CCL) … During that time, he has been the most-fouled player in the League (reg. season only), an indicator of his role in RSL‟s possession game as well as the target on his back by opposing defenses … The list:

Most Fouls Suffered since 8/29/2007:

ALL-TIME RESULTS, WITHOUT JAVIER: Since the

talismanic Argentine Javier Morales‟ arrival on the Wasatch Front, RSL has played 30 MLS regular-season/playoff, CCL or Open Cup games without its playmaker, posting an 12-9-9 overall mark … Head Coach Jason Kreis‟ team has gone 9-8-7 in MLS reg. season play, 0-0-1 Playoff, 3-0-0 in CONCACAF and 0-1-1 in Open Cup sans Javi … Since the beginning of the 2009 season, that record is 10-6-8, including a surprising ability to score 2+ goals in 11 of those 24 games without Javier … The breakdown:

SEEING RED, BUT TO LITTLE ADVANTAGE:

Back on May 7, Real Salt Lake saw an opponent hit with multiple red cards for the third time in the team’s 190-game MLS regular-season history, with the 65-minute span with at least a one-man advantage the longest in club annals … For an incredible amount of 49 minutes, RSL enjoyed a TWO-MAN advantage over Chivas USA, playing 11-v-9 in deadlocked fashion prior to Will Johnson’s victory-clinching goal in the 87

th minute … On only one

prior occasion – Oct. 18, 2008, in the 2nd

-ever game at Rio Tinto Stadium – had RSL enjoyed a 2-man advantage over its opponent, but that was just for stoppage time of the team‟s 3-1 victory over FC Dallas, a game known primarily for Johnson‟s 2008 MLS Goal of the Year blast …

OTHER RED CARD MISCELLANY: In its history, RSL

has never played with just nine men due to disciplinary issues, and has even scored FIVE short-handed goals (Jason Kreis, 7/4/05 v. NY; Chris Klein & Kreis, 9/16/06 v. DAL; a Chris Leitch own-goal on 7/3/09 v. SJ; and Nelson Gonzalez late goal on 5/28/11 v. SEA) … On 25 occasions, RSL opponents have been subject to ejection, giving the Claret-and-Cobalt a total of 424 minutes with a man-advantage … During those minutes, RSL has seen a +9 goal difference … On the other hand, RSL has been victim of 29 red cards, succumbing to a -9 goal difference in a total of 569 minutes playing a man down … Incredibly, SIX of those nine goals came in one game, the 0-6 loss @NY in August 2006 when DF Jack Stewart was tossed in the 8

th minute

… in that game, RSL made it to halftime tied 0-0, but allowed an Edson Buddle hat trick in a 21-minute span of the 2

nd half, with another three goals scored during the

final 45 minutes …

VICTORY … ERR, EQUALITY GOLD KITS?: RSL

wore its so-called “Victory Gold” 3rd

kits for the fourth time in team history at Dallas on May 22, earning road draws on each occasion … Last year, RSL drew 1-1 @KC and @PHI in a pair of August games in the Real Gold uniforms, while in this season‟s lone previous display of sartorial splendor, Jason Kreis‟ team drew 2-2 at Monterrey in the first leg of the 2010/11 CCL Final …

*CONCACAF Champions League

HOW DOES RSL GET BACK IN?: RSL probably

won‟t play another international side – exhibition or otherwise – until the 2012/13 CONCACAF tourney, which it could only qualify for through the following domestic-based mechanisms: U.S. Open Cup winner, 2011 MLS Supporters Shield winner, or MLS Cup 2011 participant … Had RSL defeated Dallas in last year‟s MLS Cup Playoff series, or even had Los Angeles advanced in place of Dallas to MLS Cup – RSL would have qualified for this year‟s CONCACAF Champions League due to LA essentially owning “dual” slots (Supp. Shield / Cup participant) and RSL finishing #2 in last year‟s overall MLS table …

KREIS CONTRACT EXTENDED THRU 2013: On

March 24, RSL President Bill Manning and GM Garth Lagerwey announced that the club has extended by two years the contract of current Head Coach Jason Kreis, keeping the youngest MLS Cup-winning manager in League history on the RSL sideline through the completion of the 2013 season … All-time, Kreis now owns a 53-44-37 mark in MLS regular-season, playoff and CONCACAF Champions League play …

Under Kreis‟ leadership, RSL became the first-ever MLS team (and one of just three non-Mexican teams) to win a CONCACAF group, posting a 4-1-1 mark and becoming the first-ever MLS side to advance CCL Final … The former striker‟s 2010 side was also the second-highest-scoring team in CONCACAF‟s group stage, with 17 goals in six games (2.83 goals/game) … During MLS play in 2010, the following numbers established by RSL set or tied new single-season league standards: fewest goals allowed (20), overall goal differential (+25), total home points (37), fewest home losses (0) and fewest home goals allowed (7). In addition to those league benchmarks, last year‟s edition set franchise-high records in wins (15), goals (45), scoring output (1.50/game), points (56), shutouts (15), road points (19) and road goal differential (+1) …

RSL’S INTERNATIONAL HISTORY: With the late

April 0-1 loss to Monterrey in the 2010/11 CONCACAF Final, RSL is now 12-7-6 all-time in international contests, with a positive goal differential (43 goals for / 33 goals against) … In meaningful int‟l competition, RSL is now 6-3-3 (26 GF / 17 GA) … In the Jason Kreis era, RSL falls to 8-3-2 vs. visiting international squads (does NOT include Toronto FC league matches; however, DOES include CCL games vs Columbus) …

FORTRESS STOOD STRONG FOR FORTY-TWO:

With RSL‟s 1-2 loss at home May 28 against Seattle, the team saw its MLS home unbeaten streak perish at 29 games … Just a month earlier on April 27, the 0-1 CCL loss to Monterrey (MEX) last week snapped the club’s overall home unbeaten run at 37 games across MLS, CCL and exhibition play … Those two losses in the last month dropped RSL to 5-1-0 at home in CONCACAF play, the team remains 21-1-9 in MLS regular season, 1-0-1 playoffs and 2-0-1 in international exhibitions … The aggregate scoreline in those games?: 79-21 …

Including the recent 29-game MLS unbeaten streak at Rio Tinto Stadium, RSL has dropped just 5 of its last 60 home games (38-5-17) across MLS regular season / playoff and CONCACAF play dating back to the start of 2008 … Prior to that, RSL was 15-19-13 on Utah soil in MLS competition, with a -5 goal differential (60 GF / 65 GA) from 2005-07 … The 2010 RSL side was just the 2
