VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC vs REAL SALT LAKE EMPIRE FIELD, Vancouver, B.C. 1 p.m. PT (Rogers SN1; KMYU 2.2) July 16, 2011 (WEEK 18; MLS Game 173)

Vancouver Whitecaps FC will be looking to regain their Empire Field when they play host to Real Salt Lake on Saturday afternoon. Whitecaps FC have lost four games in a row, coming off a 2-1 defeat at the Colorado Rapids last weekend. Real are unbeaten in six games in league play after a 2-0 home victory against FC Dallas last weekend, though they were dumped out of the U.S. Open Cup in a 2-0 loss at FCD at midweek. Then in the 79th minute, Alexandre evaded a midfield challenge and flicked it into space for Fabian Espíndola, who raced onto the pass then finished clinically from inside the area, putting a low shot into the right side of the net.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC (4-4-2): Joe Cannon - Bilal Duckett, Jay DeMerit, Mouloud Akloul (Michael Nanchoff 74), Alain Rochat - Shea Salinas, Gershon Koffie, Peter Vagenas (Alexandre Morfaw 46), Russell Teibert (Omar Salgado 46) - Davide Chiumiento, Camilo.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC Vancouver Whitecaps FC lost their fourth match in a row, falling 2-1 to the Colorado Rapids on Saturday evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Whitecaps FC have 14 points from 20 matches, sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH

The Rapids took the lead in the 25th minute. Jamie Smith played a cross over the Whitecaps defense into the path of Conor Casey, and he settled before snapping a quick angled shot past Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon.

Colorado doubled the lead at the three-quarter mark of the match. Casey powered a header on goal from a free kick that Cannon couldn't hold, and substitute Scott Palguta slammed home the rebound.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Whitecaps FC pulled a goal back in the 77th minute, when Nizar Khalfan released Camilo behind the Rapids defense. The Brazilian rounded Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens and slid his shot inside the post, but no equalizer was to come.

Whitecaps FC head coach Tom Soehn made two changes to the team that fell 1-0 to the Columbus Crew at Empire Field. Jordan Harvey made his Whitecaps FC debut, coming into the team with Michael Nanchoff for Wes Knight and the suspended Shea Salinas.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC (4-4-1-1): Joe Cannon - Jonathan Leathers, Alain Rochat, Michael Boxall (Greg Janicki 57), Jordan Harvey - Nizar Khalfan, Peter Vagenas (Jeb Brovsky 71), Gershon Koffie, Michael Nanchoff - Omar Salgado (Long Tan 46) - Camilo.

TEAM NEWS Whitecaps FC have now lost four consecutive games in MLS play, and five in all competitions – the longest

losing slide of their inaugural season. “We gave a lot of young guys some time,” Whitecaps FC coach Tom Soehn said. “They’re starting to

understand the way we want to play. We created enough opportunities that you feel disappointed not getting the result. I feel we’re getting close, and I commend [the players] on their effort today - they never stopped battling.”

Soehn ran out a side that that featured six starters 23 years of age or younger, including two teenagers. “I was pretty proud of our young team,” goalkeeper Joe Cannon said. “I thought the product we had out there

was something that hopefully our fans can get behind in the future and we can try to build off it.” First-round SuperDraft selection Michael Nanchoff (No. 8 overall) made his first MLS start for Vancouver

against Colorado, playing the full 90 minutes. “I think he got tired at the end,” Soehn said. “We were forced to make a couple of subs early, which kept him on

the field. But I think it was a great experience for him.” Acquired just the day before from Philadelphia Union, Jordan Harvey slotted in at left back and played the full

match, with Alain Rochat shifting inside to central defense. “For Jordan, coming in and adapting as fast as he did shows the experience he has,” Soehn said. “Defensively,

he was sound, and he got in the attack like we asked him. I thought he had a good, solid performance, especially as he’s only been with us for a day.”

Whitecaps FC have lost eight games away from home, most in MLS. They are one of five teams still winless on the road in league play, along with Houston, New England, Portland and Toronto.

"I thought that on the road, we had a lot more possession than we normally do, and I give credit to a lot of guys… for their effort,” Cannon said. “I’m very disappointed in myself… especially on the second goal, it comes right off my hands, so I have to look in the mirror tonight.

On Tuesday, Whitecaps FC announced the signing of Mustapha Jarju as the club’s second Designated Player. Last with Belgian club Royal Albert-Elisabeth Club (RAEC) de Mons, he scored 25 goals in all competitions last season.

“Mustapha is a proven goalscorer at the club level in Europe," said Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi. "He has pace and the ability to find the back of the net with regularity, as he did during his successful spell in Belgium. Mustapha will be a great addition to our strike force."

Whitecaps FC dealt Canadian international midfielder Terry Dunfield to Toronto FC at midweek for allocation money and future considerations.

REAL SALT LAKE Real Salt Lake stretched their unbeaten streak to six games, defeating FC Dallas 2-0 on Saturday evening at Rio Tinto Stadium. RSL sits in fourth place in the Western Conference, with 30 points from 17 matches. LAST MATCH

Real took the lead in the 47th minute through some unfamiliar circumstances. From a free kick, Andy Williams curled a weak effort up and over the ball, but FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman misjudged it, seeing the ball spin off his hands and trickle into the goal.

RSL defender Chris Wingert cleared a ball off the line late, then Fabian Espindola capped the match in added time, taking a pass from Will Johnson after an interception and cutting inside the area before slotting a low shot past a diving Hartman.

RSL coach Jason Kreis made three changes to the side that came back for a 3-3 draw with the New England Revolution at Rio Tinto Stadium. Chris Wingert and Chris Schuler came into the back four for Robbie Russell and the suspended Nat Borchers, and Kyle Beckerman came into midfield for Collen Warner.

REAL SALT LAKE (4-1-3-2): Nick Rimando - Tony Beltran, Chris Schuler, Jamison Olave, Chris Wingert - Kyle Beckerman - Ned Grabavoy (Fabian Espindola 66), Andy Williams (Collen Warner 81), Will Johnson - Luis Gil, Alvaro Saborio (Jean Alexandre 88).

MLS GAME INFORMATION

TEAM NEWS Real Salt Lake have now reeled off six games without loss, scoring eight goals in their last three games,

winning two. “We stated before the game that this was a huge, huge match for us,” RSL head coach Jason Kreis said.

“Probably the biggest one we’ve had this season against what I think is arguably the team that’s in the best form right now. To get all three points at home was big for us.”

Fabian Espindola scored for the second consecutive game after coming off the bench as a substitute, his fifth goal in his last seven games.

Real kept a clean sheet despite having two changes in the back four, with Nat Borchers suspended and Chris Wingert returning after a three-match absence.

“Schuler stepped in again and played well with his confidence, and Olave stepped up again today,” Rimando said. “But I think the play of the day was Chris [Wingert] coming back and getting that ball before it went over the line.”

One of the talking points after the match was the substitution of Alvaro Saborio. “Sabo was actually a player that I was looking to get off earlier, and you get to the second half and you get that

goal advantage and you are starting to think to yourself, ‘Who do we need to get out to make sure that they are ready for Tuesday?’” said Kreis. “And especially a player like Sabo who has had knee injury issues — he was in my mind the whole time to try to rest a little bit. Then I thought about minute 80 he looked really tired, so the decision was made to get him some rest for Tuesday. He obviously wasn’t pleased with it.”

Just three days after their league encounter, FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake met in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup, and this time FCD claimed a 2-0 victory. Jair Benitez curled home a freekick in the 18th minute, then Jackson finished off a quick break in the 54th for the victory.

Here’s the RSL team: Kyle Reynish, Tony Beltran, Jamison Olave, Nat Borchers, Chris Wingert (Collen Warner 58), Kyle Beckerman, Ned Grabavoy (Arturo Alvarez 58), Will Johnson, Andy Williams, Fabian Espindola (Jean Alexandre 66), Luis Gil.

The loss continued RSL’s dismal record at Pizza Hut Park; the scoreless draw earlier this season was the first time RSL had ever come away from Frisco with a result.

“We have seen it lots of time here in Dallas, where we can’t get our energy level right. It presents its difficulties with the weather for us and it certainly did tonight,” Kreis said “If we don’t have the right energy and right mentality for games, we often don’t get results and when we do have the right mentality and energy we do get results.”

WHITECAPS FC MATCH NOTES

MATCH NOTES• This is the second ever competitive match between Whitecaps FC and Real Salt Lake. Vancouver lost 2-0 on June 4 in Sandy,

Utah on goals by Jean Alexandre and Fabian Espindola. That is the worst defeat Vancouver has suffered in MLS.• In preseason, Vancouver won 2-1 in Casa Grande, Arizona, on February 1, on goals by #31 Russell Teibert and #7 Terry

Dunfield, while #10 Arturo Alvarez replied for Real.

WHITECAPS FC NOTES• Whitecaps FC have lost four straight in MLS play, and five straight in all competitions.• Forward #36 Mustapha Jarju became Vancouver's second Designated Player on Wednesday after three successful seasons

with Belgium's Royal Albert-Elisabeth Club (RAEC) de Mons, scoring 43 goals in 118 matches and helping win promotion to Belgium's top-flight last season. RSL LOOKS TO CUT DOWN „CAPS IN FIRST

B.C. VISIT: Real Salt Lake will look to curb the

disappointment of its recent U.S. Open Cup exit this Saturday, when the Claret-and-Cobalt make their first visit to British Columbia to take on expansion side Vancouver Whitecaps FC … Saturday‟s matinee is set for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff at Empire Field that can be seen live on KMYU 2.2 (Comcast 22 / Dish 12) and followed over the air on RSL‟s official radio partners – ESPN 700 Sports Radio and ESPN Deportes 1600 AM / Juan 106.1 FM … Saturday‟s affair will mark the second-ever contest between the two sides, with Real Salt Lake taking the inaugural match-up 2-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium back on June 4 … In that contest, usual midfielder Jean Alexandre enjoyed a breakout performance up top, the emergency striker notching his first career MLS goal (32‟) and adding his first helper on FW Fabian Espindola‟s tally (79‟) that helped seal the win … That performance led to Alexandre being named the MLS Player of the Week for Week 12 by the North American Soccer Reporters, making RSL the first team to have two players earn the weekly honor in 2011 …

RSL INJURY REPORT (as of 7/10/11)

OUT: MF Javier Morales (L ankle fracture dislocation); FW Paulo Jr. (L hamstring strain)

DOUBTFUL: None

QUESTIONABLE: None

PROBABLE: FW Arturo Alvarez (R hamstring strain), FW Fabian Espindola (L hamstring strain), GK Nick Rimando (L ankle pain), FW Alvaro Saborio (R knee swelling)

„CAPS CONNECTIONS: While Vancouver has

brought in plenty of new faces to Major League Soccer in its inaugural season, Canada‟s newest side features a pair of faces familiar to RSL in GK Jay Nolly and FW Atiba Harris … Nolly was an original member of Real Salt Lake after being drafted in the Second Round (22

nd

overall) of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft, the Indiana product making seven league appearances in Claret-and-Cobalt in his pair of seasons with Salt Lake (1-4-1, 2.62 GAA) … Harris also spent two seasons “on The Hill” at Rice-Eccles Stadium, starting in 25 of his 43 regular season appearances … The St. Kitts international scored four goals and added a pair of assists while serving as a “utility-man” for RSL from 2006-07 … In addition, Real Salt Lake‟s original Head Athletic Trainer, Jake Joachim, departed the Wasatch Front at the beginning of 2011 to lead Vancouver physio staff as it club launched into the ranks of MLS …

MLS REGULAR SEASON – RSL @ VANCOUVER – SATURDAY, JULY 16, 2011

RSL REWIND , PART 1 – OPEN CUP RUNNETH

OVER AT DALLAS: Real Salt Lake‟s attempt to win

the 98th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup ended

in the Quarterfinal Round on Tuesday night, as FC Dallas defeated the Claret-and-Cobalt 2-0 at Pizza Hut Park … The home side controlled the play nearly from the get-go, using a free kick tally from DF Jair Benitez in the 18

th

minute to go ahead and an opportunistic chip of RSL netminder Kyle Reynish by DF Jackson Goncalves in the 54

th minute to pad the advantage … The loss

continued Real Salt Lake‟s misery in the Metroplex, as the Claret-and-Cobalt are now 0-10-1 all-time at FC Dallas across all competitions, the lone draw coming from a scoreless duel back on May 22 … The appearance in the U.S. Open Cup tournament proper was RSL‟s first since the 2006 season, with the loss moving its record in overall USOC play to 4-6-1 (including MLS qualifying rounds … 3-3-0 in tournament proper) … The U.S. Open Cup will continue on Aug. 30 when Seattle Sounders FC hosts FC Dallas and the Chicago Fire welcomes USL PRO “Cinderella” Richmond Kickers to Chicagoland … The Final will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 5 … RSL line-up: Kyle Reynish; Chris Wingert (Collen Warner 58), Jamison Olave, Nat Borchers, Tony Beltran; Will Johnson, Kyle Beckerman, Ned Grabavoy (Arturo Alvarez 58), Andy Williams; Luis Gil, Fabian Espíndola (Jean Alexandre 66)

RSL REWIND, PART II – SATURDAY NIGHT

SPECIAL: Before the Open Cup disappointment against

FC Dallas on Tuesday, Real Salt Lake went a long way in climbing back to the top of the Western Conference table last Saturday night by knocking off the Texas side 2-0 in front of 17,734 fans at Rio Tinto Stadium … After a scoreless – and physical – first half in Sandy, Real Salt Lake broke the deadlock just moments into the second half when MF Andy Williams connected from range to beat GK Kevin Hartman, who bobbled the dipping shot and couldn‟t corral the ball before it trickled over the goal line … Dallas would have a golden chance to equalize in the 84th minute, when a run from MF Brek Shea would bring RSL GK Nick Rimando out of position … After making a run into the box, Shea left the ball off for MF Jackson in front of an open net, only to see his teammate tap the ball towards goal before DF Chris Wingert raced in to make a goal line save to keep RSL‟s 1-0 lead intact … The home side would seal the victory in stoppage time, when MF Will Johnson would connect with FW Fabian Espíndola to put the game out of reach … Upon receiving the pass from Johnson, Espindola was able to shake the Dallas defense and beat Hartman near-post in the closing

moments of the match for his team-leading sixth goal in MLS play this season …

SHOOTING FOR SEVEN: Real Salt Lake‟s 2-0 win

over Dallas last Saturday enabled the team to extend its unbeaten run to six MLS games, the current streak marking the club‟s third-longest stretch without a loss in team history … The only longer streak occurred last year, when single-season runs of 10 and 14 games for Jason Kreis‟ team without a loss, the latter extended to 18 with its hot regular-season start this year:

FC DALLAS STREAK-SNAPPERS AGAIN: RSL‟s

overall undefeated streak had reached seven games heading into Tuesday‟s U.S. Open Cup affair, counting its 2-0 win over the visiting Wilmington Hammerheads in the Open Cup‟s Fourth Round back on June 28 … The Hoops had stopped a pair of lengthy unbeaten runs by RSL in the 2010 season, a 10-match stretch in regular season play and a 16-game run against all MLS opposition last October in the MLS Cup Playoffs (including regular season and Champions League play) … RSL has also returned the favor in the past year, a victory in regular season play last October snapping Dallas‟ MLS-record-tying undefeated streak at 19 games, while last Saturday‟s win marked just the second loss by FC Dallas in its last 14 contests and snapped a three-game winning streak …

FABIAN A FORCE: FW Fabian Espíndola’s stoppage

time goal last Saturday against FC Dallas pushed his team-high goal total in MLS play to six … The red-hot Argentine striker has now scored in back-to-back MLS games and found the back of the net five times in his last seven league appearances … After tacking on goals in RSL‟s last two contests – a late equalizer in the 3-3 draw with New England (July 4) and the added-time insurance tally in a 2-0 win vs. FC Dallas (July 9), Espíndola has equaled his career season-high total of six goals in just 12 contests, nearly halving the 22 games it took to accomplish the same total last season … On June 18 vs. D.C. United, Espindola tallied the 20

th goal of his RSL

career, vaulting him into sole possession of 2nd

place in the RSL scoring annals with Jeff Cunningham, now 9 behind leader Robbie Findley (29) …

MLS REGULAR SEASON – RSL @ VANCOUVER – SATURDAY, JULY 16, 2011

DEFENSE STILL DOMINATES: Led by GK Nick

Rimando, the 2010 MLS Best XI center-back pairing of DF Nat Borchers and DF Jamison Olave and Captain Kyle Beckerman, the vaunted RSL defense has allowed one goal or fewer in 14 of its 17 MLS games this season, allowing a league-low 0.71 GAA and 12 goals allowed thus far, including three on PKs … Last year, RSL allowed just 20 goals in the 30-game regular season, setting a new standard in MLS annals and breaking the 2007 Houston Dynamo record of 23 GA … Rimando recorded his 82

nd career shutout on July 9 vs

DAL, 46 of which have now come in the RSL Claret-and-Cobalt … Rimando has eight of RSL‟s nine MLS clean sheets in 2011 (Reynish, April 9 @ NE), trailing Dallas‟ total of 10 (Kevin Hartman) … Rimando also had two shutouts in CONCACAF play earlier this year at Columbus and v Saprissa, while Reynish tallied the clean sheet in the 2011 Open Cup debut against Wilmington …

ATTACK PICKING UP STEAM: Due to the onslaught

of injuries, suspension and Gold Cup duty, Real Salt Lake suffered a stretch of 11 contests from April through June in which its scored multiple goals in league play just once – a 2-0 win over Vancouver on June 4 … However, the Claret-and-Cobalt have climbed their way out of the scoring funk in recent weeks, pouring in eight goals across its last three contests (3-1 W v. TOR on June 25, a 3-3 T v. NE on July 4 and a 2-0 W v. DAL on July 9) … RSL is now back up to fourth in goals per game at 1.35, ranking behind only Dallas (1.37), D.C. United (1.41) and runaway leader New York (1.70) … RSL paced the league last season with 45 goals scored in its 30 contests (1.50) …

KYLE HELPING OUT: Captain Kyle Beckerman

notched his team-high fourth assist of the season last Saturday, his back-tap to Andy Williams‟ setting up the team‟s opening salvo from 25 yards out in a 2-0 win over Dallas … The assist broke a tie with MF Collen Warner in the category for the season lead and was Beckerman‟s third helper in as many games, following up on his pair of assists in RSL‟s 3-1 win over Toronto FC two weekends ago on June 25 … The four assists are the most for Beckerman in a single-season since joining RSL midway through 2007, tied for the second-most in his career (2005 w/ COL) and just one off his career-high in the category (5 w/ COL in 2003) … Beckerman‟s 12 assists with RSL place him alone in fourth-place all time in the category and just one behind Robbie Findley …

BOMMA BREAKS OUT: The goal by MF Andy

Williams against FC Dallas was his second of the season and his first in 13 MLS regular season games … Williams last hit the back of the net during RSL‟s 4-1 win over LA during the Utah side‟s MLS home opener back on March 26 … The 14

th goal of Williams‟ RSL career places him

one behind 6th place sharers Alvaro Saborio and Yura

Movsisyan on the club‟s career scoring chart …

RIMANDO CLEAN AGAIN: Last Saturday‟s shutout

against Dallas was RSL‟s ninth in league play this season and Nick Rimando‟s eighth of 2011, with the last clean-sheet coming on June 22 in a scoreless draw at Chicago … Rimando trails only his opposite number from Dallas, Kevin Hartman (9), by one for the league lead in shutouts … The clean sheet also marked the first time Dallas has failed to score since the club hosted RSL back on May 22, when the two sides played to a scoreless draw … Rimando (82) and Hartman (101) are also 1-2 on the League‟s career shutout list … The RSL backstop had a reaggrevation of a left ankle injury caused by a loose bone spur from earlier this season during the Dallas match, but Rimando has been upgraded to probable for the contest and has traveled with the squad to Vancouver …

YELLOW-CARD PERIL NOW A CONCERN: Now is

the time of the season when yellow-card caution accumulation is added to injuries and national team duty as reasons to force lineup shuffling, with RSL MF Will Johnson one caution away from the first suspension threshold (5 yellow cards) … By staying out of the officials‟ book July 4 vs. NE and Saturday vs Dallas, Johnson is eligible to earn the League‟s “Good Behavior” incentive, which slashes one caution from his total … Should Johnson go three consecutive MLS games without a yellow card (Saturday‟s match @ VAN will complete the trifecta), he will see a caution scrubbed from his record … DF Chris Wingert, DF Robbie Russell and M/F Jean Alexandre are each TWO cautions away from suspension …

ROAD OPTIMISM: Despite the late collapse at

Columbus and the difficult start at Philadelphia, Real Salt Lake – once the worst road team in the history of MLS – has earned points in 15 of its last 18 road games – the equivalent of an entire season – dating back to May, 2010 … The road forays have been low-scoring, as RSL has outscored opponents 14-12 goals in that span – while Jason Kreis‟ team has dropped just six of its last 28 overall if you include CONCACAF and MLS Cup Playoff road matches (and one loss, April 5 at Saprissa, still clinched the series for RSL) …

This recent advent of road success places the squad‟s all-time regular season road mark at 16-57-26 (.260; 89 GF / 164 GA) heading into the 100

th road contest in

League play this Saturday at Vancouver … Since Kreis took over, RSL‟s MLS road mark is 12-33-21, with the four road wins in 2010 doubling the two earned in each of the 2007-09 seasons … Eight games down (2-2-4, 10 pts), 9 to go in 2011 …

MLS REGULAR SEASON – RSL @ VANCOUVER – SATURDAY, JULY 16, 2011

BORCHERS RETURNS AFTER 3‟ EJECTION: Nat

Borchers‟ ejection in the 3‟ of the July 4 game was the earliest red card in RSL team history, five minutes ahead of the Jack Stewart ejection back on August 26, 2006, at Giants Stadium in NY … In that game, RSL made it to halftime tied 0-0, but allowed an Edson Buddle hat trick in a 21-minute span of the 2

nd half, with another three goals

scored during the final 45 minutes … Borchers was forced to sit out of last Saturday‟s match against Dallas, but will return to eligibility for Saturday‟s contest at Vancover … The reigning MLS Best XI defender also suited up for RSL Tuesday night in Dallas, playing the full 90 minutes in RSL‟s 0-2 Open Cup defeat at Pizza Hut Park …

SEEING RED, BUT TO LITTLE ADVANTAGE:

Back on May 7, Real Salt Lake saw an opponent hit with multiple red cards for the third time in the team’s now 200-game MLS regular-season history, with the 65-minute span with at least a one-man advantage the longest in club annals … For an incredible amount of 49 minutes, RSL enjoyed a TWO-MAN advantage over Chivas USA, playing 11-v-9 in deadlocked fashion prior to Will Johnson’s victory-clinching goal in the 87

th minute … On only one

prior occasion – Oct. 18, 2008, in the 2nd

-ever game at Rio Tinto Stadium – had RSL enjoyed a 2-man advantage over its opponent, but that was just for stoppage time of the team‟s 3-1 victory over FC Dallas, a game known primarily for Johnson‟s 2008 MLS Goal of the Year blast … On 25 occasions, RSL opponents have been subject to ejection, giving the Claret-and-Cobalt a total of 424 minutes with a man-advantage … During those minutes, RSL has seen a +9 goal difference …

OTHER RED CARD MISCELLANY: In its history,

RSL has never played with just nine men due to disciplinary issues, and has now scored SEVEN short-handed goals (Jason Kreis, 7/4/05 v. NY; Chris Klein & Kreis, 9/16/06 v. DAL; a Chris Leitch own-goal on 7/3/09 v. SJ; Nelson Gonzalez late goal on 5/28/11 v. SEA; and the Johnson/Saborio goals Monday) … All-time, RSL now has been victim of 30 red cards, succumbing to a -9 goal difference in a total of 632 minutes playing a man down … Incredibly, SIX of those nine goals came in one game, the 0-6 loss @NY in August 2006 when DF Jack Stewart was tossed in the 8

th minute

RSL‟S BICENTENNIAL ON JULY 4TH

: The wild 3-3

draw with New England on July 4 marked the 200th

regular-season MLS match for RSL … The squad has now posted a 65-79-57 mark through its first six-and-a-half seasons (201 games), being outscored -8 on goal +/- (257/265) …

RARE BACK-TO-BACKS vs SINGLE OPPONENT:

The July 9/12 MLS / Open Cup back-to-back games for RSL vs Dallas were a rarity in the team‟s now 251-game history, but not unprecedented … Earlier this season, RSL faced Columbus in CONCACAF Champions League play on Feb. 22 / March 1, drawing first on the road and returning home for a 4-1 win to advance to the Semifinals … Last year, RSL played two games three days apart against D.C. United, dropping the Open Cup game before bouncing back for a 0-0 draw in MLS play … Back in 2006, RSL lost an Open Cup game to Colorado, 0-1 at home, before winning the MLS game a week later on the road with a 4-1 win … The list, RSL now sporting a 7-5-4 mark all-time: RSL Back-to-Back Games vs Same Team (@ = away) Yr Opponent Gm 1 Gm 2 Record 2011 Dallas 2-0 (MLS) @0-2 (USOC) 1-1-0

“THIS IS YOUR LIFE, JASON KREIS”: For RSL

Head Coach Jason Kreis, the eight days from July 4-12, 2011 marked a walk down memory lane, starting with the July 4 post-game retirement of the iconic #9 jersey worn for RSL (and earlier for Dallas) by one of Major League Soccer‟s pioneers … Jason‟s family, friends and his legendary youth coach, Gary Williamson, who now calls North Texas home, were all on hand for the occasion … On Saturday, July 9, RSL defeated Kreis‟ former team, FC Dallas, 2-0 in a critical match for RSL in the Supporters Shield race, before heading to the MetroPlex for Tuesday‟s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game at Pizza Hut Park, which RSL dropped 0-2 … Kreis played nine seasons in Dallas, winning the MLS MVP Award in 1999, becoming the first American-born player to do (and one of only three in the League‟s first 15 years) … Both of Kreis‟ sons – Jake and Kason – were born in Dallas, where Jason scored 91 of his 108 career goals, and helped bring the Burn its lone title of any kind, the 1997 U.S. Open Cup … Kreis teammates on that Burn squad that hoisted the Dewar Trophy? – current RSL GM Garth Lagerwey and current RSL Assistant Coach Jeff Cassar …

MLS REGULAR SEASON – RSL @ VANCOUVER – SATURDAY, JULY 16, 2011

REVS‟ HISTORIC TRIFECTA: According to the Elias

Sports Bureau, New England‟s trio of goals on July 4 marked the first time in 48 games that RSL had allowed more than two goals, the longest streak in MLS history … RSL had not conceded three or more goals to a league opponent since Sept. 26, 2009 in an 0-3 loss at Dallas … The previous time RSL allowed three goals at home to an MLS side? … A span of 56 regular-season games dating back to October 6, 2007, in a 2-3 loss to Chivas USA, that year‟s Western Conference #1 seed …

TWO-GOAL COMEBACKS: Real Salt Lake emerged

with a point on July 4 for the sixth time in club history after spotting the opposition a two-goal lead … Four of the six 2-goal comebacks have occurred at home, with three of the four happening as precursors to the Independence Day or Pioneer Day fireworks shows … This week‟s NE comeback was the second to occur on July 4, as former captain Jason Kreis tallied a 90‟ PK v NY to salvage a 2-2 draw … In last year‟s regular-season finale at rival Colorado, Saborio scored twice in second-half stoppage time to retain the Rocky Mountain Cup for holders RSL … The only win of the six came against Dallas … In 2009, RSL stormed back from a 0-2 deficit at halftime to visiting Dallas on Pioneer Day to score four in an incredible second half, which saw GK Nick Rimando stone a Jeff Cunningham PK and Yura Movsisyan notch a 2

nd-half

brace … The list:

RSL “BRACING” FOR SUCCESS: With FW Alvaro

Saborio‟s two-goal „brace‟ on June 28 vs TOR, RSL has now seen 19 of its 29 multi-goal performances occur at home in its 201-game MLS regular-season game, 12-game CCL and 12-game Open Cup histories … The multi-goal game was Saborio‟s 6

th cross all competitions, ahead

of Jeff Cunningham (5) and Javier Morales‟ tie with Robbie Findley with four “braces,” while Yura Movsisyan and Jason Kreis each had 2, ahead of Paulo Junior, Will Johnson, Kyle Beckerman, Atiba Harris, Chris Brown and Fabian Espíndola, who have each also scored 2 or more times in a game … When an RSL player scores 2 or more goals in a game, the team has posted a 20-3-4 all-time mark … Besides the 4-5 loss at Cruz Azul in CCL play and the 4-6 loss at Minnesota in Open Cup action, when was the lone MLS loss? … June 17, 2007, when Chris Brown‟s brace @LA was wasted in a 2-3 loss: G Player Date Opponent Result

Johnson‟s 87‟ game-winning goal vs. Chivas way back on May 7 marked the 16

TIME FOR A NEW STREAK: In Major League

Soccer‟s 16-year history, there have been 25 double-digit unbeaten regular-season streaks for its teams … Real Salt Lake’s historic 2010 season saw the squad amass runs of both 10 and 14 games, with the mid-April win vs. Colorado extending the latter streak to 18 games without a loss, one of the top three streaks in MLS history, just one game shy of matching the League standard … A year ago, FC Dallas matched the Columbus Crew’s 19-game run by not losing for 4 ½ months, then saw it crash to a halt by dropping an 0-2 decision at Rio Tinto Stadium … Dallas had the last laugh, however, ousting RSL in the teams‟ first-round MLS Cup Playoff matchup with a 3-2 aggregate win in October … The list:

MAYDAY, MAYDAY: 12-MONTH RUN OF

SUCCESS ON MULTIPLE FRONTS: Despite the pair

of difficult 0-1 losses vs. Monterrey and at Portland in the final week of April, Real Salt Lake performed exceptionally in the 45 games played between May 1, 2010 and April 30, 2011, losing only six times in that stretch, the rough equivalent of a season-and-a-half … Across MLS regular season, MLS Cup Playoff and CONCACAF Champions League games, Jason Kreis‟ team posted an impressive mark of 26-6-13 and outscored opponents 75-33 since May 1, 2010 … RSL would have earned 91 points in this stretch … The MLS equivalents: (reg.-season games only) TEAM GAME 1 GAME 45 PTS

Prior to last April 30 at Portland, the lone MLS losses both came on the road at Dallas on July 17 and Oct. 30, sandwiched around the bizarre 4-5 loss at Cruz Azul … The fourth loss was the 1-2 decision at Saprissa which enabled RSL to advance to the CCL Final … RSL then dropped the 0-1 home game to Monterrey to snap the 37-game “all-competition” Rio Tinto Stadium streak …

“EQUALITY GOLD” RUNS OUT: RSL wore its so-

called “Victory Gold” 3rd

kits for the fifth time in team history at Dallas last Tuesday in Open Cup play, the 0-2 result marking the first time the Utah side did not at least share the spoils while wearing the standout uniforms … The true test of the “Equality Gold” standard was set on May 22, when RSL got its first-ever point in Dallas from a scoreless draw at Pizza Hut Park … Last year, RSL drew 1-1 @ KC and 1-1 @ PHI in a pair of August games in the Real Gold uniforms, while in this season‟s other previous display of sartorial splendor, Jason Kreis‟ team drew 2-2 at Monterrey in the first leg of the 2010/11 CCL Final … For the first time ever, the uniforms lived up to their name, RSL winning 2-0 at home on June 28 over Wilmington … Expect to see the “Equality Gold” kits once again perhaps on the late September trip to New York and Washington, D.C. …

probably won‟t play another international side – exhibition or otherwise – until the 2012/13 CONCACAF tourney, which it could only qualify for by winning the 2011 MLS Supporters Shield crown or be a MLS Cup 2011 participant … RSL saw its other opportunity fall by the wayside this week after falling out of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup via a quarterfinal defeat at FC Dallas … Had RSL defeated Dallas in last year‟s MLS Cup Playoff series, or even had Los Angeles advanced in place of Dallas to MLS Cup – RSL would have qualified for this year‟s CONCACAF Champions League due to LA essentially owning “dual” slots (Supp. Shield / Cup participant) and RSL finishing #2 in last year‟s overall MLS table …

RSL‟S INTERNATIONAL HISTORY: With the late

April 0-1 loss to Monterrey in the 2010/11 CONCACAF Final, RSL is now 12-7-6 all-time in international contests, with a positive goal differential (43 goals for / 33 goals against) … In meaningful int‟l competition, RSL is now 6-3-3 (26 GF / 17 GA) … In the Jason Kreis era, RSL falls to 8-3-2 vs. visiting international squads (does NOT include Toronto FC league matches; however, DOES include CCL games vs Columbus) …

KREIS CONTRACT EXTENDED THRU 2013: On

March 24, RSL President Bill Manning and GM Garth Lagerwey announced that the club has extended by two years the contract of current Head Coach Jason Kreis, keeping the youngest MLS Cup-winning manager in League history on the RSL sideline through the completion of the 2013 season … All-time, Kreis now owns a 54-44-37 mark in MLS regular-season, playoff and CONCACAF Champions League play …

Under Kreis‟ leadership, RSL became the first-ever MLS team (and one of just three non-Mexican teams) to win a CONCACAF group, posting a 4-1-1 mark and becoming the first-ever MLS side to advance CCL Final … The former striker‟s 2010 side was also the second-highest-scoring team in CONCACAF‟s group stage, with 17 goals in six games (2.83 goals/game) … During MLS play in 2010, the following numbers established by RSL set or tied new single-season league standards:

fewest goals allowed (20)

overall goal differential (+25)

total home points (37)

fewest home losses (0)

fewest home goals allowed (7) In addition to those league benchmarks, last year‟s edition set franchise-high records in

wins (15)

goals (45)

scoring output (1.50/game)

points (56)

shutouts (15)

road points (19)

road goal differential (+1)

MLS REGULAR SEASON – RSL @ VANCOUVER – SATURDAY, JULY 16, 2011

FORTRESS STOOD STRONG FOR FORTY-TWO:

With RSL‟s 1-2 loss at home May 28 against Seattle, the team saw its MLS home unbeaten streak perish at 29 games … Just a month earlier on April 27, the 0-1 CCL loss to Monterrey (MEX) last week snapped the club’s overall home unbeaten run at 37 games across MLS, CCL and exhibition play … While those two losses in a one-month span dropped RSL to 5-1-0 at home in CONCACAF play, the team remains 23-1-11 in MLS regular season, 1-0-1 playoffs and 2-0-1 in international exhibitions … The aggregate scoreline in those games?: 88-26 …

RMC TIES: The June 6, 2009 Fox Soccer Channel

telecast went to multiple commercial breaks during Elder Gonzalez‟ lengthy “consecration” of the field, much to the disdain of current Rapids‟ coach Gary Smith … RSL‟s all-time home mark PRIOR to Elder Gonzalez' "consecration" – just 25-21-19 … AFTER Elder Gonzalez' June 6, 2009 prayer at Rio Tinto Stadium – now 33 wins, 2 losses, 13 ties … Real Salt Lake Year-by-Year Home Results (Regular Season) 2005: 5-8-3 (.406) 18 pts. 19 GF / 24 GA (-5 GD) 2006: 6-4-6 (.563) 24 pts. 23 GF / 19 GA (+4 GD) 2007: 4-7-4 (.400) 16 pts. 18 GF / 22 GA (-4 GD) 2008: 8-1-6 (.733) 30 pts. 24 GF / 10 GA (+14 GD) 2009: 9-1-5 (.750) 32 pts. 34 GF / 11 GA (+23 GD) 2010: 11-0-4 (.867) 37 pts. 31 GF / 7 GA (+24 GD) 2011: 6-1-3 (.750) 21 pts. 18 GF / 8 GA (+10 GD) CAREER: 49-22-31 (.629) 167 GF / 101 GA (+66 GD)

Including the recent 29-game MLS unbeaten streak at Rio Tinto Stadium, RSL has dropped just 5 of its last 65 home games (41-5-19) across MLS regular season / playoff and CONCACAF / Open Cup play dating back to the start of 2008 … Prior to that, RSL was 15-19-13 on Utah soil in MLS competition, with a -5 goal differential (60 GF / 65 GA) from 2005-07 … The 2010 RSL side was just the 2

nd MLS team to remain

unbeaten at home in an entire season, joining the 2005 SJ Earthquakes (9-0-7) … Since June „09, RSL is 20-0-8 at home in regular-season play, the longest such run in League history: TEAM # START STOP
