MNUFC Returns Home Looking to Sweep Whitecaps FCMinnesota United will try to sweep its second Western Conference series of the season on Saturday when it welcomes Vancouver Whitecaps FC to Allianz Field. Vancouver has struggled to get momentum and points this year as they are winless in their last eight games and sit at the bottom of the conference. A tough stretch against top teams in both conferences currently has Whitecaps FC on a five-game losing streak, while the Loons are unbeaten in their last five league games. Mason Toye continues to take the league by storm as he has gotten his name on the score sheet in each of those games, and the return of Romain Metanire gives the Loons a boost on both ends of the field.

Loons Secure a Point on the RoadMinnesota United capped off a busy stretch of seven games in 22 days by venturing west to take on Real Salt Lake. The Loons struggled to get momentum going early in the game, relying on long shots from Jan Gregus to test the RSL goalkeeper. They did find the breakthrough early in the second half off a corner kick, as Darwin Quintero redirected a Mason Toye header past the goalkeeper and in to give the Loons the lead in the 57th minute. The Claret-and-Cobalt would answer on a corner of their own when a deflection fell kindly to Marcelo Silva to put home the equalizer. Minnesota nearly got its winner in the closing minutes as Gregus slammed a shot off the post, but would settle for the draw to remain unbeaten in its last five games.

    MNUFC GAME NOTES

2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTESMinnesota United Signs French Leftback Wilfried MoimbeMinnesota United has signed French fullback Wilfried Moimbé from France’s Ligue 2 side AS Nancy-Lorraine. Moimbé will join the Loons pending a physical and receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC. Moimbé will occupy an international spot on Minnesota’s roster.

“We’ve added another experienced piece [in Wilfried] to what’s going to be a really important last half of the season – he’s vastly experienced, very athletic,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “We’ve been so pleased with Chase Gasper’s emergence but we are mindful of the fact that Chase is the only natural left back that we have on the roster at this moment in time. This will bring added competition. It’s another important piece because we want to keep incrementally adding to the squad and improving the already talented roster that we have. We feel as though this will be important for us moving forward for the rest of the season.”

Hassani Dotson Makes First Appearance on MLS Team of the WeekThe streak of MNUFC players in the MLS Team of the Week continues for the fourth consecutive week. Rookie Hassani Dotson represents the Loons with his first appearance on the MLS Team of the Week, occupying a spot on the bench in Week 20.

Filling in at defensive midfielder for Osvaldo Alonso against Real Salt Lake, Dotson exhibited the versatility that has made him extremely valuable for the Loons this season. He completed 27 passes, including three in the final third and three long balls. He also made a pair of clearances, and disrupted RSL’s attack with an interception, a key tackle and blocked a shot inside the penalty area.

Adrian Heath On Getting a Point Away Against RSL“Actually having watched it a couple of times since, [I’m] a little bit disappointed. I thought that our defensive shape was excellent against a really good attacking team, really good front four, a team that scored four goals against the Eastern Conference leaders, last time out. I thought our attacking play, our combination play, speed and movement of the ball, speed of thought was probably as poor as it’s been over the last six or seven games, which has been really good. But, hey, I can’t complain. We just had seven games in 22 days [and] came through undefeated in all competitions, scored a lot of goals, looked defensively sound. So, I can’t be too disappointed.”

Heath on Returning to Normality with One-Game Week“It’s good that we can actually get some work done. We just seem to have been working in a classroom, really. With regeneration the day after, all the travel days, then it’s a nice steady early day in terms of prep for the next game. So, it’ll be nice, the next couple days, actually working on stuff on the training ground and get the guys in good spots.”

Jan Gregus on the Important of the Next Stretch of Games “It’s funny because every week that we get into, it’s the most important one and that’s how it is because the league is very tight. Everybody keeps winning so we need to keep up the pace and that’s what we need to do.”

Gregus on Not Overlooking Vancouver“I wouldn’t say I’m looking at the Portland game [yet]. The next one is important, the most important one and that, we of course, we need to win and we have to look at ourselves. I think [that] if we keep doing things good, on offense and defense, I think we can beat anybody in the league.”

USWNT To Play At Allianz FieldMinnesota United and U.S. Soccer announced Wednesday that Allianz Field will host the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup champions in a game against Portugal on Tuesday, September 3 as part of the U.S. Women’s National Team Victory Tour presented by Allstate®. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 2 and the ESPN App at 7:00 p.m. CT.

“It’s always fun to play in cities that we haven’t been to that much and with the opening of the new stadium for Minnesota United, it’s awesome that we’ll get to play in Saint Paul this fall in a world class facility that is another sign of the growth of soccer in the USA,” said USWNT midfielder Rose Lavelle. “I’m all in favor of any time we can go to Big-10 country and we’re really looking forward to celebrating the World Cup title with all of the fans in the Midwest.”

The 2019 USWNT Victory Tour, presented by Allstate®, kicks off on Saturday, August 3, when the USA hosts the Republic of Ireland at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. More than 27,000 tickets have been sold to date. The game will be the USA’s first on home soil after winning the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France and will be broadcast on ESPN2 and the ESPN App starting at 7:00 p.m. PT.

This will be the U.S. Women’s National Team’s first time playing at Allianz Field, where Minnesota hosted Group D of the 2019 Gold Cup, including the U.S. Men’s National Team matchup against Guyana.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 24 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Starting in 2019, the league has adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on the the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.
