Minnesota Returns Home to Host ColoradoMinnesota United returns from its Texas road trip with a point from two matches, and now directs its attention to the Colorado Rapids. The Rapids have lost both of their encounters since drawing with the Loons in March, including their first home loss since 2015. They will also be without star goalkeeper Tim Howard after he was handed a three-match suspension last week. The reeling Rapids are up against a different Minnesota side than they faced earlier in the year. The Loons seemed to have fixed many of their defensive issues and their offense is red-hot, pumping in six goals in three matches so far in April. Minnesota will hope to please its fans with another home victory, while Colorado tries to spoil the party.

Loons Battle Back to Draw HoustonMinnesota United put on an impressive second-half display Saturday night, coming back to draw 2-2 with the Houston Dynamo. After going down by a pair of goals before halftime, and losing a pair of players to injury, the Loons had a daunting task ahead of them. They came out of the break strong and rallied back to tie the match within the first fifteen minutes of the second half. Christian Ramirez netted his fifth of the year with a header off a Kevin Molino corner kick. 12 minutes later, Molino set up midfielder Johan Venegas, who buried an impressive half-volley shot to level the match at two goals each. Minnesota survived a late push from Houston to end the Dynamo’s winning streak at home.

• Marc Burch and Sam Cronin will face Colorado for the first time since being traded to Minnesota at the end of March.

• Minnesota set a club record for most cautions in a match last time it played Colorado, with four players seeing yellow cards.

• Christian Ramirez is tied for second in MLS with five goals this season. He is the highest scoring American in the league.

• Kevin Molino is tied for fourth in the league for assists with three.

• Both Ramirez (5G/1A) and Molino (3G/3A) have six points in seven matches.

• Minnesota has now had to substitute goalkeepers due to injury twice in 2017. John Alvbage came on for Bobby Shuttleworth in the first half of last week’s match against Houston. Shuttleworth had replaced Alvbage in the closing minutes of the Loons’ second match of the season.

• Tim Howard will be unavailable for the Rapids due to a three-match suspension handed down from the MLS Disciplinary Committee. Howard was given the suspension for an altercation with fans following the club’s match against Sporting KC on April 9.

• Jared Watts will also miss Sunday’s match after receiving a red card last week for blocking a shot with his hand, denying RSL an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

• It will have been 37 days since the team’s last met in Colorado. This will be Minnesota’s third-shortest span of time between matches against the same opponent this season. The shortest will be 15 days separating a pair matches against the Seattle Sounders in early August.

• Minnesota averages the second least amount of fouls committed per game in MLS with 9, only behind Seattle who averages 8.7.

• The Rapids average just 2.4 shots on goal and 7.4 total shots per game. Both are the lowest in MLS this season.

• Zac MacMath will most likely start for Colorado on Sunday. He has made two appearances in 2017, with four saves from six shots on goal. He has a 45-45-34 lifetime record in MLS.

• Minnesota did not have a single corner kick during its last encounter with Colorado. The Rapids, on the other hand, had seven.

• The Loons have scored multiple goals in four of their last five matches.

• Sam Cronin has a goal and three assists while playing against Colorado in his career. He had two goals and three assists while playing for the Rapids from 2015 to 2017.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 22 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with ten teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew SC, D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first match was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United if front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by the Columbus Crew who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 14 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 matches during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away matches. The remainder of the schedule is filled with matches against conference opponents. The top six teams in each conference at the end of the year qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The postseason begins with the third through sixth seeds in each conference playing in a knockout round. The winners advance to the conference semifinals to play the first and second seeds in the conference. In this round, the format switches to a two-match aggregate series, with the team scoring the most goals over the series moving on. The same format is used for the conference finals. The winner of the conference final moves on to face the other conference champion in the MLS Cup Final. The final is a single match, hosted by the team with the best record in the regular season, with the winner being declared MLS Cup Champion.

SJÖBERG INJURED

Axel Sjöberg underwent successful surgery on his left ham-string on Tuesday, March 14 after picking up an injury in the dying moments of the 1-0 loss at New York Red Bulls. Sjöberg was to be re-evaluated after six to eight weeks at which time a further update will be provided. Last season, Sjöberg earned Rapids’ Defender of the Year, was one of three nominees for MLS Defender of the Year, and was named to the MLS Best XI. Sjöberg helped guide the league’s best defense to an unbeaten regular season at home, as well as a trip to the Western Conference Championship. In all, the Rapids’ 2015 MLS SuperDraft first round pick has started all 47 matches he has appeared in for the Rapids, while adding two goals and one assist.

CHARLOTTE UPDATE Two early goals settled matters last Saturday (4/15) as the

Charlotte Independence (0-1-2) drew 1-1 at home to the Pitts-

burgh Riverhounds, leaving the Rapids’ USL affiliate still seek-

ing their first win of the 2017 season.

On-loan Rapids’ defender Dennis Castillo made his second

successive start for the Independence, while Academy goal-

keeper, Kainoa Likewise, was again on the bench.

The visitors snatched the lead after just two minutes, through

Kay Banjo. Pittsburgh’s lead last just four minutes. David Spies

was fouled in the penalty area, allowing Jorge Herrera to level

matters from the spot.

Charlotte dominated after the interval, enjoying 71 per cent of

the possession, but they could not prevent Pittsburgh from

picking up a point against the Independence. Last year, Char-

lotte had back-to-back shutout success against the Hounds, by

a 3-0 and 4-0 margin respectively.

Next game: 4/22 at Saint Louis FC.

Salt Lake at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park last Saturday.

1. The Rapids’ unbeaten home record fell on Saturday. They

had enjoyed a 19-game run without defeat at Dick’s Sporting

Goods Park. This is good for joint-sixth best all-time in MLS.

2. In that club record 19-game spell, the Rapids had a record of

12-0-7, while giving up just nine goals. It all began with the 1-0

win over LA Galaxy in the 2016 home opener.

3. When scoring first in 2016, the Rapids went 15-1-5. The only

side to come from behind to win against Pablo Mastroeni’s

side were Real Salt Lake (August 26, Rio Tinto).

4. The last time the Rapids scored first at home and lost was on

October 4, 2015. As he did on Saturday, Kevin Doyle scored for

the Rapids, with RSL again coming back to win 2-1.

5. This was only the third time in 39 matches that the Rapids

had conceded multiple goals in back-to-back games at Dick’s

Sporting Goods Park.

6. Nick Rimando has now been in goal for 13 victories against

the Rapids, his most against any MLS franchise.

had previously gone 0-7-1, and averaged 0.6 goals per game.

8. Doyle made his 50th MLS appearance on Saturday. His rec-

ord at the half-century mark is 13 goals and four assists.

9. Joshua Gatt and Mohammed Saeid both made their Rapids

debut on Saturday. For Gatt, it was also his MLS debut. His last

competitive soccer came on November 6, when he started and

played 85 minutes for Molde in a 1-0 loss at Lillestrom.

10. Central defender Kortne Ford became the first Homegrown

player to start on their home debut.

MATCH REPORT - COLORADO RAPIDS vs. REAL SALT LAKE (4/15/17) With two goals in the last five minutes of the match, Real Salt Lake defeated the Colorado Rapids 2-1 on Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Pablo Mastroeni made one change to the lineup from last week’s contest at Sporting KC - Dillon Powers got the nod in midfield in place of Shkëlzen Gashi. Recent newcomers Mohammed Saeid and Joshua Gatt both made their Rapids debut, coming off the bench for Nana Boateng and Marlon Hairston, respectively. The Rapids almost took the lead five minutes into the match as Kevin Doyle broke away from Chris Schuler, finding himself with one man to beat. The Irish international looked to put one past Nick Rimando at the near post but the veteran keeper made a one-handed stop, sending the attempt for a corner kick. At the other end, Zac MacMath - wearing the armband in the absence of Tim Howard - was tested a couple of times via shots from Sebastian Saucedo and Yura Movsisyan. Doyle would eventually get his second goal of the season just inside the 30-minute mark. Boateng - who had to be replaced short-ly after the goal due to an apparent lower back injury - found a streaking Hairston down the left flank. After beating his man, Hair-ston would find Doyle at the near post to give Colorado the lead. In the second half, the Rapids dominated the rhythm but could not capitalize on their chances created in the final third, giving Real Salt Lake the opportunity to claw their way back into the match. Five minutes from time, defender Jared Watts was called for a handball in the box and was shown a straight red card. Movsisyan’s perfectly placed penalty kick beat an outstretched MacMath to tie things up. Three minutes later, Brooks Lennon would tally the game-winner for the visitors with a low shot from just outside the area - stunning the Rapids faithful. Colorado had not tasted defeat at home in regular season play since the 2015 season finale - a 1-0 loss against Montreal Impact. QUOTE SHEET - COLORADO RAPIDS vs. REAL SALT LAKE (4/15/17)

Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni – Colorado Rapids On not having Tim Howard available… It doesn’t change anything. We had ample opportunities to put the game away and it’s a game of finishing chances. We did enough tonight to win the game, we just weren’t clinical enough in front of goal and conceded two terrible goals. On Zac MacMath’s performance… I thought it was pretty good. He didn’t have much to do today until the latter part of the game. His distribution was good and cre-ated some attacking options for us. It was a night of two silly decisions on our part and poor defending in and around the area. On the last 10 minutes of the match… It’s an emotional game. We had a couple of one-on-one opportunities to finish the game. We left it far too late. We didn’t do well enough with the chances that we created. It’s a game of emotions and that’s why two goals were conceded in the last five minutes. They didn’t have anything until the last five minutes. Forward Kevin Doyle – Colorado Rapids On the diving header… We were playing well up to that stage. Marlon [Hairston] got in a great position and I was just trying to get in the box and get a good connection on it. We were upset with a few injuries and it took away the rhythm of the game. It felt like we were going to win the game, we never thought we were going to lose but it’s tough to take those last ten minutes. On the missed opportunities… Tough when you’re 1-0 up and you’re protecting [the lead]. We were sucker punched with two goals which we’re very disappoint-ed with. Overall, we think we played well but overtime just lost concentration. On looking ahead to next weekend’s game… Our life as a professional is up and down. You get to learn that as you get older, you can’t dwell on disappointments because next week we can win and everyone is happy again. We just have to analyze it, hope to get a reason out of it and be ready for next weekend. Defender Kortne Ford – Colorado Rapids On playing at home for the first time… It felt great to play in front of our fans but it was a disappointment to have lost the match – especially in those critical moments the last 5-10 minutes of the game. On the last ten minutes… We have to tune in and win our individual battles. Be smart and we can’t have guys dribbling across us. We have to get blocked shots and at the end of the day, I don’t think Zac could’ve seen it. On regrouping and looking ahead… It will be a learning experience. We have to go in, watch film and learn from our mistakes. Regroup this week because this is unac-ceptable and we owe it to our fans.
