About this Library

Thank you for purchasing the MKSensation for the Yamaha Motif XF. This library is designed to be an exact replica of the famous Roland MKS-20 Digital Piano module. The Roland MKS-20 Digital Piano was once a respected "realistic" piano module, but has given way to affordable samplers with mega RAM. The MKS-20 ruled the '80s with its brother and sister digital pianos, the RD-1000 and RD-300. These digital pianos can still be heard on countless Elton John, country, and techno songs although lately even they are being replaced by samples of the original. Now we see a resurgence for this type of piano as it is an awesome alternative for a CP-80 and the expressiveness, warmth and detail of this module is unmatched, especially in the pop and gospel arena. Today these coveted modules are very rare and can run as much as $600.00 for a module in good condition. Musicians around the world miss this unique sound, because of its very warm filters and the unmatched expressiveness of the piano sounds. Now musicians are paying top dollar for these coveted and rare modules.

The MKS-20 features eight distinct digital tones: three pianos, two electric pianos, clavinet, vibraphone, and harpsichord. Each tone has eight variations stored in RAM. User editable parameters include a three band EQ with parametric mid, chorus depth and speed, and vibrato depth and speed. Chorus and vibrato on/off status can be stored with each patch. Global transposition is available, and handy when layering with other tones. The MKS-20 is a highly expressive piano module, but has a characteristic digital sound that is not easily confused with a real piano. However, it often cuts through a mix better than a real or sampled acoustic, and sounds wonderful when layered with pads and a little delay or reverb. For that, unmistakable '80s sound, the MKS-20 can't be beat, although the Roland P-330 digital piano module comes extremely close, but not as warm. The secret to this module is that it uses NO SAMPLES! Roland developed a proprietary technique called SA (Structured Adaptive) synthesis, which provided an ultra-musical expression of synthesized voices. Our goal was to replicate this module in its entirety, while preserving the expressiveness, warmth, richness, and clarity. The pianos and EPs were recorded with a 4-layer velocity switching waveform. The other instruments only required one layer. We recorded in our studio with a real MKS-20 module straight through our Apogee converters at 96kHz/24-bit, to preserve the highest quality. We sampled the notes with long decays, thus to keep the pureness of the natural decay of the instruments. You will thoroughly enjoy these new samples as we succeeded in replicating the MKS-20 digital piano module to be loaded into your Motif!

Specifications

Thank you for purchasing the “MKS-20” library for the Yamaha Motif ES. The library contains 185 MB of new samples, therefore, you will need at least 256 MB of RAM (DIMM’s modules) installed in your Motif ES. 512MB is recommended. The Motif ES does not ship with any RAM, you will have to purchase and install it yourself. For more information on what type of DIMMs are needed, and how to install them, please refer to your ES owner’s manual.

HOW TO LOAD THE SOUNDS

WARNING – BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST

BEFORE YOU LOAD “MKS-20”, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKED UP (SAVED) ANY DATA IN YOUR PRODUCT THAT YOU MAY WANT TO KEEP. YOU CAN SAVE YOUR DATA IN A VARIETY OF FORMATS ONTO A USB STORAGE DEVICE, OR AS AN EDITOR FILE VIA USB. CONSULT YOUR PRODUCT’S OWNER MANUAL FOR DETAILS ON SAVING/BACKING UP YOUR IMPORTANT DATA SUCH AS SOUNDS, BEATS, SEQUENCES OR SONGS. A NOTE ABOUT SHARED SAMPLE DATA

It is recommended that you always load “MKS-20” as an ALL file. Many of the voices in the library share the same sample data. If you choose to load the individual voices from the library in “Load Voice” mode, one at a time, the Motif ES will always load the associated sample data with each voice, which can result in the same samples being loaded over and over. This will lead to your user RAM getting “filled up” in a hurry, which will result in an overload and the error message “WARNING! SAMPLE MEMORY FULL!”
