General DescriptionThe KAHR Pistol, with its all-steel design, incorporates the key features mostdesired in a personal defensive hand-gun:

• Low overall weight • Extremely compact size• Outstanding quality of

materials and workmanship

The KAHR Pistol is a mechanically-locked, recoil operated pistol with a pas-sive striker block and a trigger-cocking(D/A Only) action.

Each round is automatically loaded untilthe magazine is empty. The slide is thenheld open by the slide release lever.

Primary FeaturesThe KAHR Pistol trigger system allowsthe shooter to quickly bring the pistol intoaction by eliminating the need to operateany manual safeties. Once the target hasbeen selected and identified, simplypulling the trigger fires the pistol.

The striker is automatically held underpartial tension after each round and isfully secured by a passive striker blockuntil the trigger is fully depressed.

The slide release lever and the maga-zine catch are easily operated with theshooting hand.

The KAHR Pistol frame is uniquelydesigned to position the shooting handas close to the center line of the bore aspossible. This provides the benefit ofgreater control and a perceived reduc-tion in recoil.

The all-steel construction and sophisti-cated computerized manufacturing tech-nology employed in the construction ofthe KAHR Pistol assure superior qualityand reliability.

Warning:The KAHR Pistol has no external, manu-al safety lever and no grip safety. It isfired like a double-action revolver bypressing the trigger. Always keep thefirearm unloaded until you are ready toshoot. When the firearm is loaded donot touch the trigger unless you intendto fire!

Warning:If the KAHR Pistol appears to be operat-ing improperly for any reason, dangerof an unintentional discharge exists. The firearm must be immediatelyunloaded and not used until it isrepaired. Make sure that the pistol isproperly repaired and checked byKAHR ARMS or an authorized gunsmithbefore using it again.

How the Kahr Pistol FunctionsFOR TESTING FUNCTION, ALWAYS USEAN UNLOADED PISTOL WITH ANEMPTY CHAMBER AND WITHOUT THEMAGAZINE INSERTED.(described immediately below)

1. Without placing finger on the Trigger, remove the Magazine. Make sure thatthere is no round in the chamber bypulling the Slide fully to the rear andcarefully checking that the chamber isempty. The pistol is now unloaded withthe Magazine out.

2. Keeping finger off the Trigger, cock thepistol by pulling the Slide fully to itsrearmost position and letting it run for-ward. The pistol is now partially cocked,i.e. the Striker Spring is partially ten-sioned. The Trigger is fully forward.

The following describes the functioning ofthe KAHR Pistol when it is loaded andfires:

As the Trigger is pulled (pressed to therear), the internal passive Striker Block isreleased, i.e. a protrusion on theCocking Cam lifts the Striker Block sothat it no longer blocks the Striker frommoving forward past the breech face tofire a chambered round. Simultaneouslywith this action, the Cocking Cam pullsthe Striker back from half-cock to a fullycocked position under full spring tension.Completing the rearward pull of the

Trigger allows the Cocking Cam torelease the Striker. With the Striker Blocklifted, the Striker is free to move fully for-ward to contact and fire the cartridge.

The recoil impulse of the fired cartridgemoves the Barrel and Slide backwards. After approximately 1/2 inch of movement to the rear, the camming action of the recoil lug ofthe Barrel and the pin on the SlideRelease Lever in the Frame pulls the rearof the Barrel down to unlock it from theSlide. Unlocked, the Slide continuesfully to the rear of its travel. During thisrearward travel, the cartridge is pulledout of the chamber by the Extractor andis then thrown out to the right by theEjector.

A ramp in the Slide rails disengages theTrigger Bar from the Cocking Cam. Thisallows the Cocking Cam to reset itselfand reactivates the Striker Block.

The Recoil Spring begins to move theSlide forward toward its original lockedposition.

As the Slide moves forward: 1. a loaded round is pushed out of themagazine into the chamber; 2. the Striker is caught and put underpartial tension by the Cocking Cam, and 3.the Barrel is pushed forward andupward, locking it with the Slide.

Important Safety Information

Page 7: MK series Operating Instructions - PDF.TEXTFILES.COMpdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/kahr_mk.pdfcarelessly or improperly handled, the user ... 4.0 “ Weight ... this manual is mandatory

Safety Rules:1. Always handle any firearm as if itwere loaded to avoid unintended dis-charges.

2. Never point any firearm at anythingyou do not intend to shoot.

3. Never take anyone’s word that anyfirearm is unloaded. Check for yourself, with fingers off the trigger, and thefirearm pointed in a safe direction.

4. Always be sure barrel and action areclear of obstructions. First remove themagazine and unload the pistol, thenclear obstructions immediately so thatthe firearm will function correctly andsafely.

5. Never squeeze the trigger or put yourfinger in the trigger guard until you areaiming at the target you intend to shoot.

CAUTION: THE PISTOL WILL NOW FIREIF THE TRIGGER IS PULLED.

After the last round has been fired andejected, the Slide is held open by theSlide Release Lever.

NOTE REGARDING SLIDE RELEASEOPERATION: When the Slide is heldopen on an empty Magazine, the SlideRelease Lever is very hard to depress. This warns the shooter that theMagazine is empty.

To easily release the Slide, either removethe empty Magazine or replace it with aloaded Magazine. Depressing the SlideRelease Lever will then be much easier.

Safety DevicesThe KAHR Pistol has no conventional,externally-located safety lever. Therefore, the Trigger should only betouched when you intend to dischargethe pistol.

STRIKER BLOCK: In the pre-tensioned position, a spring-loaded Striker Block projects into arecess in the Striker, preventing it frommoving forward. The Striker Block isonly released when the Trigger is fully tothe rear.

SAFETY FUNCTION OF THE COCKINGCAM DESIGN AND POSITION:The forward movement of the Striker isblocked by the Cocking Cam. Due to thedesign and positioning of the CockingCam, there is no way for the Striker tomove forward past the Cocking Camunder normal use unless the Trigger ispulled.

Sights & Sight AdjustmentThese consist of a Rear Sight which hasa white bar insert under the sightingnotch and a Front Sight which has awhite dot insert.

Windage adjustments are normallymade with the Rear Sight Only.

Both the Front and Rear Sights are heldin place by the tight fit of the Sight to thedovetail. Windage (side to side) adjust-ments are made by pressing the RearSight in the direction that you want thebullet placement to move. For example, ifthe pistol groups to the left of your aim-ing point, move the Rear Sight to theright. This will move the bullet placementto the right.

Note: Sight adjustments should be madewith a sight adjustment tool that isdesigned to move the Sight without dam-aging the Slide, dovetail cut or the Sightitself. When pressing the Sights to makean adjustment, use a non-marring mater-ial against the Sight and the Slide toavoid damage.

CAUTION! THE MAGAZINE SPRING ISUNDER PRESSURE. Be sure to containthe Spring when withdrawing the pin toprevent damage and/or injury.

Remove the Magazine Spring andMagazine Follower (E) through the bot-tom of the Magazine Tube.

The Magazine is now completely disas-sembled (see photo #7). Clean all partsthoroughly with solvent. Wipe all partslightly with lubricant-moistened clothbefore reassembly.

CAUTION! DO NOT OVER LUBRICATE.Lubricant can penetrate the primer ofammunition and render it inoperativecausing a failure to fire.

Inspect the Magazine Base andMagazine Base Lock for cracks. Inspectthe Magazine Tube for cracks or voids inthe seam weld area. Inspect MagazineFollower for chips and cracks. Check the

18. When preparing to fire, be sure thatthe area behind the slide is free ofobstructions (watch your thumb) as theslide will move back sharply upon firing.

19. Never drink alcoholic beverages ortake drugs before or during shooting asyour vision and judgment can be serious-ly impaired, making your gun handlingunsafe.

20. Always seek a doctor’s advice if youare taking medication to be sure you arefit to shoot and handle a firearm safely.

21. Always wear ear protection whenshooting, especially on a range. Withoutear protection, the noise of firing canlead to cumulative long-term and perma-nent hearing loss.

Magazine Disassembly,Maintenance & ReassemblyDisassemblyEnsure that the Magazine is unloaded.Insert a 1/8” or smaller pin (or length ofstiff wire, etc.) through the bottom sightholes in the Magazine Tube (A), betweencoils of the Magazine Spring (D). This willcontain most of the spring tension duringdisassembly. Using a small punch (orball-point pen or similar expedient),depress the locking stud of theMagazine Base Lock (B) through thehole in the bottom of the Magazine Base(C) (see photo #6).

Push the Magazine Base forward off theMagazine Tube. The pin previously insert-ed in the bottom sight holes of theMagazine Tube now contains theMagazine Spring under some compres-sion. Point the bottom of the MagazineTube in a safe direction, contain theSpring’s free end protruding from the bot-tom with your thumb, and carefully with-draw the pin from the Magazine sightholes.

22. Always wear protective shootingglasses for eye protection. Do not holdan autoloading pistol near your eye orface as the slide will move back sharplyupon firing.

23. Always make sure that any firearm isunloaded before cleaning, storing ortransporting. When handing the KAHRPistol to another person, be sure that theslide is locked open with the magazineremoved.

24. Always keep clear and keep othersclear of the ejection port, as spent car-tridges are ejected with enough force tocause injury.

25. Never place fingers in the ejectionport; they could be injured by the slidemoving forward unintentionally.

26. Never place fingers on a hot slide or barrel during or after firing, as theycould be burned by the hot metal.

With the Slide removed and the Barreldismantled, the Striker is drawn backmanually about 1/4 inch and then easedforward again. The tip of the Strikermust not project beyond the breech faceof the Slide.

Note: When easing the Striker forward, becareful not to depress the Striker Blockwhich sits next to the Striker. If it is depressed during the safety check,it will allow the Striker to project beyondthe breech face.

Note Regarding Primer Indent andDistorted Spent CasesUpon examining fired cases, youmay notice that the primer indentappears distorted or elongated. This is normal for the striker sys-tem design of the KAHR pistols. You mayalso notice that the spent case becomesslightly deformed into the shape of a "D"instead of an "O" shape. This is consid-ered normal for the KAHR pistol and iscaused by the spent case touching thebottom of the ejection port when exitingthe gun. Neither of these two situationsare a cause for concern and it is not nec-essary to contact the service department.

27. Only use high-quality commerciallymanufactured ammunition, in excellentcondition and in the correct caliber foryour pistol.

The use of reloaded ammunition will voidthe Warranty because reloads or poorquality ammunition may not meet indus-try specifications (SAAMI and/or NATO),may exceed pressure limits and could beunsafe.

28. Do not shoot the KAHR Pistol nearany part of your body as the slide willmove back sharply upon firing.

Cleaning & LubricationBefore the initial shooting of the newKAHR Pistol, the pistol should bedisassembled following the instruc-tions in this manual and cleanedwith a commercial gun cleaning sol-vent. After each shooting session, the cleaning process should berepeated to remove firing residuefrom the inside and outside of theBarrel, Slide, Frame and Magazine.

Once cleaned, all parts should belightly lubricated with a commercialgun lubricant. Follow solvent andlubricant manufacturer’s instruc-tions.

The handgun should be kept cleanand properly lubricated at all times.Lubricants can evaporate over time. Therefore, lightly lubricate the hand-gun once a month whether or not ithas been fired. Be sure your hand-gun is FULLY UNLOADED(Magazine removed and chamberempty) before performing any clean-ing or maintenance.

Note Regarding Lead Bullets:Lead (unjacketed) bullets can causeexcessive bore fouling. Extra atten-tion to cleaning the bore is recom-mended after firing lead bullets.

Notes on ReliabilityIf this firearm is to be used in lawfulself-defense, the user must under-stand that overall reliability is basedupon the interaction of four factors:handgun, magazine, ammunitionand user.

A handgun is only a mechanicaldevice. It can fail to function proper-ly despite the use of the finest mate-rials and the greatest possible carein its design and manufacture. Toensure the highest level of reliability,we suggest that you adhere to thefollowing guidelines:

1. Obtain the guidance of a quali-fied or accredited firearms instructorbefore using the handgun.

2. Use only the highest quality facto-ry ammunition. Avoid reloads, sur-plus and budget priced ammunitionas well as any ammunitiondesigned by its manufacturer for usein carbines or other shoulder-firedfirearms. At times, a particularmodel of handgun will not reliablyfunction with a specific brand orloading of ammunition. Selectedammunition should be test fired (100rounds minimum) to ensure reliabili-ty. Also, ammunition manufacturerscan make changes to their ammuni-

tion such as substituting a differentpowder or primer. Consequently, ammunition which proved reliablein the past may suddenly begin tocause malfunctions. Inspect allammunition for visible defects beforeloading it into the Magazine.

3. Use only KAHR ARMS manufac-tured Magazines. Consider purchas-ing extra Magazines so that theymay periodically be rotated, allow-ing the Magazine Spring to relax. When inserting a Magazine into thehandgun, listen for it to click intoplace, then pull down on theMagazine Base to make sure that itis seated and locked.

4. Improper shooting technique andgrip can cause a variety of malfunc-tions such as a failure to properlyeject or feed. Also, some loadings ofammunition are more sensitive toimproper shooting technique or gripthan others. Maintain a firm butcomfortable grip on the handgun. The shooting arm should supplyresistance to the handgun ratherthan serving as a shock absorber.
