Abraham Lincoln Written by Cora

Abraham Lincoln is one of the presidents we remember on Presidents’ Day. He was the 16th President of the United States. Lincoln is best known for having been the president who freed slaves and stopped slavery, but he did many other amazing things. He served as president during one of the worst wars in American history: the Civil War. After the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania (a turning point about halfway through the war), Abraham Lincoln gave a speech that lasted less than three minutes and used only 272 words, but its meaning was very powerful. The most important five words he used were “ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL.’’ This all started when Abraham Lincoln was a kid who stood up for fairness. As he was growing up, he saw a group of slaves chained up in a boat on the Ohio River. That memory would haunt him until he actually could do something about it by freeing the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863. All of Lincoln’s accomplishments are even more amazing because he taught himself by being a big reader. If you want more information, you can read a book about Abraham Lincoln. I enjoyed reading a book called I am Abraham Lincoln by Brad Meltzer.

Friendship of the Month Ethan and Aleek

Written by Anais Ethan and Aleek’s favorite color is blue. Both of their favorite foods are spaghetti. Their favorite dessert is ice cream. Ethan’s favorite place is San Diego and Aleek’s favorite place is the beach. Aleek has a sibling named Julia who is 16 years old. Ethan has a sibling named Jayden who is 7 years old. Their most favorite subject is science. Both of them are in Ms. Camelio’s 5th grade class. Their hobby is tech team. Aleek’s favorite movie is Despicable Me 2 and Ethan’s favorite movie is Big Hero 6. Now you might wonder how Ethan and Aleek became friends. Well this is how it started… Ethan’s good friend, Angelo, moved to Hawaii last month. Aleek transferred from our school from Balboa. Ethan was sad that his best friend had to move, but he was able to make another friend. That is the friendship of the month.

February Fun Craft Two Hedgehog Shaped Patterns With Legs written by Vivian

I am going to explain to you how to make a fluffy buddy.

Here are the instructions: 1-Get a thin piece of cardboard. Cut out four rectangles about a half inch long. Two pieces of cardboard will be the front leg, the other two will be the back legs. 2- Glue those two parts together, but leave the half inch legs on both sides unglued. 3-Fold the four legs facing out. Cut two straight thin pieces of cardboard, put the two hedgehog patterns facing out. Stick them together and they become two parts. Then put the straight thin layer under the two bottom patterns you cut out. 4-Take a lot of brown pipe cleaners and cut them short pieces (to about 3 inches long each). If you can’t poke through the cardboard with the pipe cleaners, you can use an object to poke holes in the cardboard for the body, but leave some blank space near the face. Stick the pipe cleaners through the holes and cover the whole body of the hedgehog (see the picture example). 5-In the blank space, color a nose with a black marker, a mouth with red marker, and put googly eyes one on each side. 6-Enjoy playing with your new fluffy buddy.

February Fashion Fun Written by Luiza

It’s February and it is time for some passion for fashion! This month you can wear hearts in any color because this month we celebrate Valentine’s Day! Most people wear T-shirts with cupids on it. Others just wear white shirts with hearts on them. My favorite one is hearts around the whole shirt. February is the month which has only 28 or 29 days so, you have to be quick at getting dressed. Time is running out! February also is the last month of winter. Unlike, Southern California, where it is very most days, Northeastern USA is

VERY cold in Winter. For people in the Northeast, I will say, “Wear very warm clothes, so you don’t get a cold.” That’s the fashion scoop for the month of February.

SHARKS written by Sean

Sharks are amazing creatures. Many people are afraid of sharks but really there is nothing to be afraid of. There are 100,000,000 sharks killed each year and 70 shark attacks each year. There are 350 kinds of sharks, 25 of them are predatory including Bull, Blue, Mako and the Great White Shark.

Great White Great White shark is the most feared predatory shark on earth, but it still has enemies like the 30 foot long Killer Whale which normally attacks small Great White Sharks. A Great White Shark can eat 7 whole tuna in one day. If they feed on a sea lion, the Great White Shark can last a month or two without eating another big meal. An adult Great White can grow to 22 feet long. Baby Great whites are known as pups when they are born and measure 5 feet long at birth.
