I Believe Santa and Rudolph Are Real by Anais Mardirosian Most people think there is no such thing as Santa Claus. I think they are wrong. I asked many fifth graders who all told me they think that their parents put gifts under the Christmas tree and say they are from Santa. I think children should believe in what they want, but I know Santa is real. I don’t really know why people think Santa is not real. I've heard on the radio people try to make kids think Santa Claus is real by telling fake stories about Santa Claus. But you don’t need fake stories. Santa eats the cookies and milk, he puts the presents under the tree, and when it’s New Years, Santa always drops his hat at our doorway. Now let’s talk about Rudolph the rednosed reindeer. I wouldn't blame people who don't think Rudolph has a red nose and that reindeer can fly, but my only question is “where do the reindeer get their magic to fly?” I love Christmas and I always will.

THEME  OF  THE  MONTH  The  Holidays

What  do  3rd  graders  (and  their  teachers)  think  Christmas  is  about?

Natel:    Christmas  is  about  celebrating  Jesus’  birthday  Lilit:  Getting  presents  Daniel,  Sean,  Vivian  &  Mackenzie:  Spending  time  with  your  family  Anahit:    Giving  presents  to  friends  and  family  and  kids  who  are  less  fortunate  Talia:  Having  fun  Ms.  Joboyan:  Believing  in  Santa  Claus  Ms.  Duncan:

Christmas  Traditions      by  Vivian  Shahjahanian

Everybody  doesn’t  celebrate  Christmas,  but  if  you  do,  you  might  do  some  of  these  things.  For  Christmas,  people  decorate,  bake  cookies  for  Santa,  get  gifts  for  each  other,  spend  time  with  family  and  friends  and  last  but  not  least  open  presents  from  Santa.  I  know  I  do  these  things,  but  most  importantly,  I  love  spending  time  with  my  family  and  having  fun.  These  are  some  things  we  do  with  family:  watch  movies,  drink  hot  cocoa,  play  and  eat  feasts  together.  Happy  holidays  for  one  and  all.  I  wish  you  a  very  Merry  Christmas!

I  Believe  Santa  and  Rudolph  Are  Real  by  Anais  Mardirosian

Most  people  think  there  is  no  such  thing  as  Santa  Claus. Now  let’s  talk  about  Rudolph  the  red-‐nosed  reindeer.

FACTS  OF  THE  MONTH  Holidays  in  Winter  By  Anahit  Sinanyan

Did  you  know  Hanukkah  and  Kwanzaa  are  both  holidays  in  December  like  Christmas?  And  Armenians  celebrate  Christmas  in  January?  Hanukkah  is  a  holiday  where  Jewish

people  light  a  candle  every  day  for  eight  days,  starting  this  year  on  December  16th.  Traditionally  people  eat  foods  cooked  in  oil  such  as  potato  pancakes  called  latkes  to  celebrate  the  miracle  of  the  Festival  of  Light;  they  also  play  a  game  with  a  dreidel  (which  looks  like  a  spinning  top).  Unlike  Christmas  and  Hanukkah,  Kwanzaa  is  not  a  religious  holiday.  Kwanzaa  starts  on  December  26th  and  lasts  for  seven  days.  Similar  to  Hanukkah,  each  night  of  Kwanzaa  a  candle  is  lit,  but  the  candles  are  green,  black  and  red  for  the  colors  of  Kwanzaa.  Each  day  (and  each  candle)  is  dedicated  to  a  different  principle  of  Kwanzaa.  Armenians  celebrate  Christmas  (Sourp  Dznount)  on  January  6th.  Historically,  Christmas  was  observed  on  January  6  but  then  changed  to  December  25  to  replace  a  pagan  holiday  on  the  same  day.  Armenians  continues  to  celebrate  Christmas  on  January  6th.  For  Armenians,  celebrates  the  birth  of  Christ  and  also  his  baptism  by  John  the  Baptist.

ANIMAL  OF  THE  MONTH  Wolves

By  Atom  Shahoian   Wolves  are  the  dogs  of  Mother  Nature.    In  each  pack,  there  has  to  be  a  male  and  female  alpha  (who  are  the  father  and  mother).    All  the  rest  are  sons,  daughters,  brothers,  and  sisters  or  any  other  members  of  the  family.  The  cubs  are  the  ones  that  the  other  wolves  have  to  keep  protected  because  many  animals,  like  cougars  and  black  bears,  try  to  devour  the  cubs.  The  wolves  eat  lots  of  animals,  including  buffalo,  deer,  moose,  and  raccoons.  This  may  sound  crazy,  but  wolves  helped  change  the  shape  of  rivers!  Here’s  how  it  happened.  People  were  hunting  wolves,  but  in  1995,  people  reintroduced  wolves  back  into  Yellowstone  National  Wildlife  Park!  So  the  deer  that  ate  the  grass  near  the  riverbank  had  to  hide,  so  with  the  deer  gone,  more  grass  grew.  As  the  grass  grew,  it  gained  strength  and  strengthened  the  banks  of  the  river,  and  the  grass  grew  high  enough  to  change  the  shape  of  the  river!  So  then  more  plants  grew.  With  more  plants,  more  herbivores  came,  and  with  more  herbivores,  more  carnivores  came.  That’s  how  wolves  helped  the  river  and  how  wolves  and  Mother  Nature  connect.

 PERSON  OF  THE  MONTH

Sawyer  Hollis

Sawyer  Hollis  is  in  Mrs.  Buckhoff’s  Kindergarten  class.  He  is  six  years  old.  His  birthday  is  on  September  2nd.  He  has  two  brothers.  Christmas  is  his  favorite  holiday.  He  loves  to  open  presents.  For  Christmas,  Sawyer  would  really  love  to  get  an  Xbox  360.  His  favorite  color  is  red.  He  also  likes  chocolate.  He  enjoys  going  to  the  zoo.  His  favorite  food  is  pasta  and  his  favorite  subject  is  art.  Sawyer  is  the  person  of  the  month.

TEACHER  OF  THE  MONTH  Mrs.  Brohier

Mrs.  Brohier  has  been  working  at  Mark  Keppel  for  14  years  and  her  favorite  colors  are  blue  and  green.  Her  favorite  hobbies  are  reading  classics,  listening  to  classical  music,  and  traveling  around  the  world  so  she  probably  has  been  to  a  lot  of  places.  She  has  taught  K-‐5th  grades.  Her  mom  first  inspired  her  to  be  a  teacher  when  she  was  about  5  years  old.  She  is  teaching  1st  grade  right  now  and  she  loves  it.  She  has  one  child  who  is  three  years  old.  When  she  is  at  home  she  likes  to  spend  time  with  her  son  and  do  fun  activities.  She  plays  badminton  and  soccer;  if  you  don’t  know  what  badminton  is,  it  is  just  like  tennis  but  smaller.

FUN  THING  TO  DO  ON  WINTER  BREAK  SKIING

Some  people  are  going  skiing  on  winter  break.  Maybe  you  will  be  going  to  skiing.  Some  people  do  not  like  skiing  because  they  are  scared  to  ski  high  on  the  mountain  or  slip  on  ice.  Skiing  is  a  very  fun  thing  to  do  but  takes  a  lot  of  practice  and  skill.  Skiing  can  be  dangerous  too  so  it  is  important  to  be  careful  and  safe.  It  is  very  cold  up  there  on  the  mountain  so  it  is  important  to  be  warm  too.  If  I  went  skiing,  I  would  go  to  Big  Bear.
