hello and welcome to the July edition of the mK Flyers.Last July we ran our Sponsor a Flip Flop with all proceeds going to Willen Hospice.

This year we have brought the summer to the flyers with our Sponsor an Ice Lolly.

On the centre pages you will see the businesses in Milton Keynes that have helped and supported Willen Hospice and raised over £700 for this great cause.

With the sun trying its best to make an appearance in Milton Keynes, we are itching to get into our gardens to start to enjoy them again. This month’s edition has yet more great tips on your garden from Frost Garden Centre’s resident expert, Maurice Rust. See what Maurice has to say on page 28.

With the wedding season here as well, have a look at what is on offer from Abbey Hill Hotel on page 19.

One of our newest advertisers in Niche Furniture offering a bespoke Kitchen & Bedroom service. If it is time for change for you see their advert on page 18.

Please remember to mention the MK Flyer when responding to articles and advertisements.

July is going to be a very exciting month for milton KeynesNot only do we have the Olympic Torch darting through the streets, grasped in the hands of some of the city’s residents on the 9th July, but the long awaited International Festival is ready to take hold, with a large number of different cultural events taking place in all sorts of venues all around MK.

The festival has been listed as one of the top 100 festivals in the Sunday Times Festival guide. Events range from bouncing on the inflatable Stonehenge which will be situated outside the train station for a couple of days, to a light festival in Campbell Park and even a performance of a play from Cambodia. I am incredibly excited as it gives MK yet another opportunity to get on the map and I would urge you all to look into what is going on, on your own doorstep.

With the Olympics this month and the Jubilee last month there has certainly been a feel good factor spread across the country. It has made visits around Milton Keynes particularly special for me with plenty of celebrations but there have also been some really interesting events independent of this time of national celebration. Young Enterprise is a charity which encourages business, education and learning. Each year they run a business competition where school pupils come up with an idea for a product or service, produce it and sell it.

In the hope to meet Milton Keynes’s own version of Alan Sugar, I went to the final of the County Final for the competition where both Stantonbury and Ousedale schools were competing. . Both schools seemed to have themed their projects on “up-cycling”, making your once loved items into something useful again. Oused Again! The entry from Ousedale created their business creating cake stands and clocks from old records and rings from the keys of old keyboards. The business from Stantonbury , Scrap That, made notebooks from old newspapers and magazines. I was really impressed with the business plans

that each school had come up with and their recognition of what had worked and what had gone wrong. With the the future of business in their hands, it has hope to be a bright future.

As a former boy Scout I took great delight in visiting the Girlguides

in Heron’s Lodge. I have fantastic memories of when I was younger singing songs around a campfire, learning to make fire and weekends away sleeping in tents, so this was a visit full of nostalgia for me. The Rainbows and Brownies were in full swing when I arrived, the Rainbows learning about the Queen, having made crowns which they were wearing, while the Brownies were having a competition as part of a teddy bear’s picnic. It was a pleasure to see so many young girls enjoying spending time outside school doing useful activities, I know that the skills I learnt as a Boy Scout have stuck for life.

Finally in amongst the jubilee celebrations, I visited community based projects which are working incredibly hard. Open Door provides a drop-in centre service for the homeless community within Milton Keynes. Always happy to roll up my sleeves I helped the volunteers make cups of tea and coffee for the homeless people that dropped in. The service provides excellent support to all of its users and goes much further than just providing a hot meal, hot shower and clothes; they also provide mental health support, English teachers and tenancy support for those looking for accommodation.

Following on from this, I paid a surprise visit to the Wylie Centre in Bradville to see their new job club. I was delighted to see how the job club is helping give people the confidence, assurance and skills they require to get back into work. I met with a young man, who had been out of work for a year, his self-esteem was visibly affected by this and all he wanted to do was to get a job. I know that the job club really will make a difference, so if you need help with your CV and are struggling to get back into work, why not pop along and see how they can help you.

With so much going on in mK over the next month i hope you are able to really enjoy it.as ever i am available if you need any help on 01908 686830.

This beautiful photo of Chicheley Street taken by Michael’s sister Catherine Pratt in 1959 showing the old Clay Lane as it once was called, referring to the clay-made bricks dug from this area in the ‘Clay Lane Closes & the Old Enclosure’ seen on my photo.

This is an extremely large area seen in the second field from the lane, where tons of clay were manually dug to make the bricks to build some of the old town. It is not clear exactly when this was, but possibly dating to the 1600 to early 1800s.

Some of the houses in the ‘Old Saint John Street’ were possibly built with these bricks. There were many clay pits in this area around Clay Lane up until these lands were developed and urbanised.

This started in Chicheley Street from 1929, when the modern bottom end odd numbered houses were first built.

Hawthorn Cottage is on the left which is believed to be an old Shepherd’s Cottage, probably built by William Powell when he owned the Tickford Abbey site and lands, in the 1840s.

Hawthorn Cottage was demolished in March 1965 to make way for the present houses and the widening of the lane.

Catherine’s photo shows an old Oak Tree in the distance which was near the home of Mr Tommy Dalby-Balls who lived at number 29 with wife Annie. Mr Balls was famous for designing the ‘Tickford Hood’ which was used on many of the Salmon’s Car’s. This was shown at the 1925 Motor Show. Tommy was rewarded with a percentage of every one sold, allowing him to buy his home, which was only done by the more affluent members of society at that time.

PageIn my last examination into this ancient thoroughfare, I will be looking into this old lane’s history throughout the past 400 years, certainly taking us back to the 1600s of which there are records enlightening us of its past.Gentleman Mr Mark Slingsbie, who was probably a Church Warden and Governor of Queen Ann’s Hospital, it is said he was buried 16th July 1677 in one of the close’s off Chicheley Street.

A taste of the Diamond Jubilee comes to WolvertonCity MP, Mark Lancaster, welcomed a member of the Royal household to Wolverton this week. Commander Lacey, who is the head of Royal travel, was in Wolverton to receive a gift from Railcare on behalf of Her Majesty, The Queen.

Railcare presented Commander Lacey with a painting which had been specially commissioned for the Diamond Jubilee. The painting, by John Kitchen which depicts the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh has the famous Royal Train in the background.

Wolverton has a long history when it comes to the Royal Train. The current one in use, was made at the Wolverton Depot for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1972 and has been in use ever since. There is a dedicated team based at Railcare who maintain the famous train.”

Small businesses will lead the wayin 2012, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 peoplemilton Keynes will boom in 2012, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2011.

Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way.

“Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.

Pruning a WisteriaMaurice Rust, Frosts Garden Centre, Woburn Sands

Possibly the number one question i am asked – ‘how do i prune my wisteria’ or ‘my wisteria never flowers,’ what am i doing wrong?

It is very simple when planting a new wisteria plant it a warm wall facing on the south or west, for the first two or three years of growth you need to build up a frame work of trained stems evenly spaced supported on wires over the wall where you are growing it.

To achieve a stunning display it will require some work and attention, wisteria are best pruned hard twice a year to make sure of the best show of flowers. Its sheer vigour – new shoots can easily grow 4 metres (12feet) in a season – makes it difficult to keep under control, this is partly to blame for the wariness with which inexperienced gardeners approach the task of pruning wisteria. Wisteria do not deserve the reputation of being a difficult plant to prune, the job is quite straightforward once you grasp a few basic principles.

Wisteria flowers on shoots known as lateral spurs that have developed off main stems of the previous year. This is referred to as ‘flowering on old wood’. The aim of pruning is to create the maximum number of well-spaced spurs on strong and regular framework of branches that will allow pendulous blooms to hang gracefully without crowding those on the branches below.

All varieties flowers most profusely growing in a warm sunny situation. It is bests grown against the sunny wall, where new shoots are helped to ripen early in the reflected warmth. In this location, espalier training makes the most of the flowers trailing habit. Fix strong horizontal support wires to the wall at 38 to 45 cm (15 to 18 inches)_ apart and at least 5 cm (2inches) away from the wall for the best effect. Plant the wisteria at 30 cm (12 inches)

away from the base of the wall and begin training by cutting back the leader immediately after planting. This stimulates the production of side shoots from which, through successive summers and winter pruning and tying, you will establish a framework of well spaced lateral branches studded with flowering spurs.

Some simple points to remember

1. After planting – stake and prune back to a healthy bud about a metre high (3ft) above ground level.

2. First summer pruning – tie in the vertical leader, then select two strong laterals and tie in at 45 degrees. Prune side shoots to about 15 cm (6 inches) or three of four buds to begin formation of flowering spurs . Remove any shoots from the base of the plant.

3. First winter pruning -cut back leader to about 1 metre (3ft) above the laterals to begin. Pull down laterals previously trained at 45 degrees and tie horizontally. Cut back by third of their length.

4. Second summer pruning – Tie in the leader and horizontal laterals as they grow. Prune side shoots to three or four buds. Select the next pair of laterals and tie in at 45 – degree angle. Again remove any basal growth.

5. Second winter pruning. Cut back leader and tie in laterals as the previous winter pruning. Prune back laterals by about a third of their length to ripen wood. Continue this sequence until the available space is covered.

6. After several years growing the wisteria will be established. Some thinning of lateral shoots growing may be required, this should be carried out in July or immediately after flowering. Prune the lateral growths back to four buds in July and then prune back to two buds the following February to produce two long flowering racemes rather than four shorter racemes of flower.

Memories that last a lifetimeHave your videos & slides transferred to DVD or CD

Remember the good old days?

Rolace office at Bassett Court

There was a time when Rolace only provided services for companies providing alternatives to document storage, shredding and general office requirements but now the company situated at 4 Basset Court in Newport Pagnell provides more than just the above! They even cater for clutter in the home!

By converting VHS tapes, Hi8/Mini DV tapes and 35mm Slides to DVD or CD, they can bring your memories into the 21st century. With their new Nikon 4000dpi film scanner which scans both slides and negatives in superb definition, decades old slides can be enhanced and converted onto DVD or CD. Their specialist team scan all of your slides on site with

extreme care and attention. Rolace will clean, scan and then enhance your pictures to bring back their original vibrant colours, clean up old scratches and even remove mildew and stains!

While VHS, Mini DV and Hi8 tapes can be converted to DVD’s, prolonging the life of cherished memories and inevitably avoiding the fear of losing them all together, as VHS is now an obsolete format. But why restore your VHS tapes? Well Carol Lancaster, director of Rolace Document Management quotes “VHS is an unreliable format, tapes can often break and perish over time and in some cases become irreparably damaged, due to damp and other elements, that’s why we take the utmost care when handling

and converting home videos and slides. Customer care is our most valued characteristic here at Rolace and we understand the importance of maintaining people’s memories and all for a reasonable price.”

So if you have Weddings, Birthdays, Holidays or even just a school performance on video, get down to Rolace and receive 10% off orders until 31/08/12! Please quote mKF1

a mysterious Lady in grey is said to have drowned in the river in Castle meadow during the Civil War when newport Pagnell was a garrison for Cromwell’s troops

now it’s theghost-Buster musteroLd haunTS of the ghostly kind will be one of the main attractions at this year’s muster walking festival at newport Pagnell. In what must surely be one of the most unusual themes for a community event, walkers will be directed round the ancient town to venues where a wide variety of spooks and spirits is said to have been sighted. The walk is based around the recently published book Haunted Places in Newport Pagnell by local author Julie Wilson who claims it is ‘Britain’s ghostliest town.’Julie’s collection of ghost stories – all entirely true, she says – recounts no fewer than 25 tales of strange goings-on including the apparition of a mysterious monk, images of a woman in grey who drowned during the Civil War, ghoulish glimpses of victims of the Great Plague buried in the town park, and an eerie funeral procession that never ends. The haunts where each of those events is said to have happened – and many more – are featured in the ‘Spirits,’ a circular route of nine miles around the town which is included in the Muster’s festival of walks for the first time.Other routes on offer are ‘Beer’, a six mile hike around the town’s many inns and hostelries (past and present), the ‘Challenge’, a 15-mile marathon featuring sections of Willen, Tongwell and Caldecote lakes, and the ‘Picnic’, a suitable-for-all, three mile stroll around Bury Field, Newport’s 1000-year-old common. Muster walk marshal Steve Tearle, who had the idea of including the ‘Spirits’ in this year’s programme, reckons it could take between 2.5 and 4 hours to complete

… even without detours for ghost-hunting and any unexplained events.Julie, a journalist who was born in Newport Pagnell, said she decided to write her book after experiencing some strange and eerie feelings at an old property in the town. “As soon as I started telling people what had happened, it became clear many others also had ghost stories of their own,” she said. “The collection just grew from there and I believe the town can honestly claim to be ‘Britain’s most ghostliest town.’” Last year’s Muster entry was a record which organisers are hoping to beat. Being sponsored is not compulsory but many walkers raise money for worthy causes and the hope is that Willen Hospice, this year’s Charity of Choice, will inspire many walkers to support their campaign. The all-day festival of walks is on Saturday September 8.
