It offers people the chance to sing and perform pop, gospel and Motown songs with no auditions and no requirements to read music or have any previous singing experience. Choir members have appeared regularly on national television, including Breakfast TV, The One Show and the Paul O’Grady Show. Rock Choir has released two top twenty albums and broken three Guinness World Records. Last In 2012 it helped raise over £450,000 for charity through performances and membership events. Milton Keynes members recently performed at the Milton Keynes Christmas Lights Ceremony, and are currently rehearsing for a huge concert, which will take place at London’s O2 Arena in July. “Our new term starts week beginning 14th January,” said Charlotte. “New members will be able to take part in the O2 Arena performance, and there are lots more exciting local performances in the pipeline too.”

2012 was undoubtedly a year of celebration which saw both the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics and i must admit i find it hard to think that another year could ever beat it.

However, 2013 brings its promises too, not least more royal celebrations following the announcement of the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnancy.

Already for me as an MP my diary is fit to bursting with events happening in and around Milton Keynes at the beginning of the year, a sure sign that no one is resting on their laurels and our community is as active and engaged as ever.

As the saying goes as the New Year begins, out with the old and in with the new and I adopted this approach when it came to my chest hair towards the end of last year. Beauty by Rajni is a salon based in Conniburrow who decided to hold a sponsored “Wax Off” in aid of Children in need, in the spirit of the season I was duly signed up and when my office staff told me quite what I had been signed up for; I must admit I was a little fearful. I can’t say it is something I would go and do out of choice but I was very impressed by the results and the salon was fantastic.

Christmas time is a busy period for everyone but undeniably it gets extremely busy for our postmen

and women. I was lucky enough to be invited to the Royal Mail Sorting Office in Newport Pagnell early on a December morning and while I was indeed in need of a caffeine boost the workers there were in full swing.

I was amazed by the machinery behind the operation of delivering post and am still staggered by the volume of post which is dealt with daily. Now the Christmas period is over I hope things have finally quietened down and they are having a well earned rest now.

I am continuing to run my ‘reading campaign’ in primary schools across Milton Keynes this year, which I hope will raise the profile of the importance of children reading both at home and at school. With the UK’s illiteracy rates scoring as some of the highest in Western Europe there has never been a more important time to encourage children to get some enjoyment out of reading.

I’ve had a fantastic response to the campaign with nearly 30 schools taking part and I have been amazed at some of the books which I have been asked to read from-they’re certainly more colourful than they were when I started reading!

The herniated discHerniated discs are often referred to as slipped discs. This isn’t entirely accurate.The disc doesn’t slip out of alignment with the spine, like a block in a Jenga tower, the spine is too stable. Briefly, there are three major ligaments running down the length of the spine which prohibit forward movement of the disc, added to this, there are various tendons, ligaments and muscles either side of the spine which stop it from slipping to the side either.

I was taught that the discs of the spine are like rolled up belts, made of cartilage. Each disc has a soft core called the nucleus.

Now cartilage, or the belt in our example, is tough stuff, but doesn’t handle compression very well. When compressed, cartilage tends to crack. So let’s place a large brick on the front of the belt. The force of the brick pushes down on the belt and forces the soft middle against the back of the belt. As this is repeated over many years, due to bad posture or bending, cracks start to appear in the belt, until finally the belt gives way and the middle pushes out. This is a herniated disc.

The body reacts to a herniation by causing inflammation, and inflammation causes pain and

stiffness. The herniation itself can press up against nerves which pass in the vicinity of the herniation. This causes pain, numbness or tingling sensations down the path of the nerve. The most common location for a disc herniation is the L5/S1 region, at the base of the spine. The nerve emerging from the L5/S1 level of the spine is one of five roots contributing to the sciatic nerve, and compression of this nerve causes sciatica.

Symptoms:

As mentioned, symptoms include pain and inflammation around the area where the herniation occurred. You will most likely experience sciatica, or pain down the back of the leg. The sciatic pain may increase when you cough, sneeze or pass a stool. These symptoms may come on quickly, due to an injury, or they may come on slowly over time.

Treatment:

I will always treat what I find. The most common course of treatment would be to reduce the inflammation around the herniated disc. This includes treating those muscles which have become tense and spasmodic. I treat the disc directly by gently moving the spine in a way which widens the gap through which the nerves pass, reducing the pressure on the nerve and reducing the sciatic pain.

Treatment can take time, but it is worth it. You can manage herniated disc symptoms.

So you might think I’m lazy for not cutting down bare stems and soggy seed heads, but in fact I am providing luxury accommodation for over-wintering insects. These in turn attract certain birds and other insects for whom the luxury accommodation is more akin to a fast-food establishment.

When you trim hollow-stemmed plants, cut them into 10cm lengths and bind a few together into a bunch. Push this bunch of stems into a hedge or a sheltered corner and insects will find it...a sort of ‘build it and they will come’ construction...with apologies for the Kevin Costner film reference there! You can also buy some wonderful purpose-built constructions. My mother bought me an impressively titled ‘insect condominium’ a few

Christmases ago which has proved very popular with solitary bees and ladybirds alike.

A gardening friend of mine gave me a great tip. He suggested placing a couple of ladybird shelters near my rose bushes so that when the warmer weather finally comes, early aphids will be gobbled up by the ladybirds and their larvae.

Top Bird-feeding TipsStart with the basics A good quality sunflower seed based mix in a tubular feeder is a great starting point and will attract a wide variety of birds.

Add some extras Peanuts are a good source of protein and fat and are very popular. Raisins and apple chunks on a platform will attract blackbirds, thrushes and other fruit-lovers. Fat or suet is high-energy and gratefully received by many species during colder weather. Niger seed in small feeders will attract shy goldfinches if hung in a quieter part of the garden.

Check your hygiene Feeders should be clean and mould-free or they may spread disease.

Don’t forget water Fresh water is really important, especially if temperatures are below freezing.

Safety first Consider placing stickers on patio doors to reduce the risk of collisions. Protect birds from cats by hanging the feeders high enough and removing any potential hiding places nearby.

Small businesses will lead the wayin 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 peopleMilton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.

Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way.

“Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”
