President’s Letter

Hello MJMHA Members,

Happy New Year! I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge Thank You to Laura Wealch for everything she accomplished as this club’s President. I look forward to following in her footsteps in leading the club for 2019.

We are busy at work preparing for the 2018 year end high point awards banquet on January 20th at Weber’s Inn in Ann Arbor. This is a great opportunity for members to celebrate accomplishments and to socialize before being too busy preparing for 2019 show season. All members are welcome to attend this event and details may be found on the website. We look forward to seeing everyone.

The Club will be hosting a Tack Sale on February 9th at Pickney High School. Here’s where you can find new treasures for the show season, or lighten your personal inventory. Either way everyone wins! We also will be exhibiting at the Horse Expo held at MSU on March 8-10. From there we roll right into the club’s first horse show for 2019. The Classic Horse Show will be April 19-21, 2019 at Mason Fairgrounds. Make sure to add all these events to your calendars.

We are always in need of volunteers at events and through out the year. So if you’re interested please contact any of the Directors.

Regards,

Roberta Bartlett

President

Lily Cook

Lily fell in love with horses while playing at the park one day with her grandmother when she was just 4 years old. A local barn was visiting the park that day with a few of their pony’s and was offering pony rides. When Lily rode that pony it was love at first sight. The joy she showed on her face just from being on the pony for that short time could not be matched. Shortly after this day she began taking weekly lessons. She has been riding now for about 6 years and there is no end in sight.

On Lily’s 9th birthday a close family friend gave Lily the most magical birthday present a girl could ask for- a palomino horse name Goldie. This precious gift has changed her life. During this first year with Goldie there were many learning opportunities both as a new horse owner and as a new showing pair but they came out on top. There were ups and downs but at the end of it all it was one of the best years of her life. Goldie and Lily complement each other so well and they are a beautiful pair to watch. She is now in her second year showing Goldie and looks forward to the endless possibilities that await.

That small girl riding a pony on a lead rope has become the beautiful young rider she is today because she has the greatest team of people supporting her along the way. Twin Elm Training has been such a blessing in her life. The guidance and encouragement she receives on a weekly basis is nothing less than extraordinary. Bobbie Jo Jaakkola and Johanna Consolver along with all of the Twin Elm family have taught Lily the skills not only to be a great rider but also a caring and compassionate horse owner. They have truly shown her how special riding a horse can be as well as how much dedication and work it takes to care for your horse. They continue to work with her every week to push her to grow, to learn, and to advance her skills. Most importantly they provide constant encouragement and remind her every day that riding a horse is not only one of the most special things you can do it is also so much fun!

Winter Hoof Care For Horses Author: Taylor Fabus

Although riding may slow down and visits to the barn become less frequent, caring for your horse in winter should not be overlooked! Proper horse care and management during the winter is essential. As the temperature drops, your horse’s requirements for energy, shelter and hoof care begin to change. Here, we will discover how the winter months specifically affect hoof care.

The same amount of attention should be paid to your horse’s hooves, whether you are riding regularly or not. This is often one aspect of horse care that is overlooked in the winter. Horses’ hooves are still growing in the winter months and they are walking on frozen, uneven, and sometimes slippery ground so timely and appropriate farrier work is important. Also, remember to continue to pick hooves regularly to remove dirt and debris, such as rocks and ice.

Hoof care must be kept on schedule throughout the winter. Many horse owners prefer to pull shoes throughout this period of minimal riding. Most horses that are maintained outdoors should have their shoes removed. Shod feet can be-come ice packed, increasing the chance for slipping on snow and ice. Additionally, most horses have better traction on icy ground when shoes are removed. Hooves should be routinely trimmed every six to eight weeks to prevent

cracks and breakage. However, care should be taken not to trim them too closely to prevent bruised, sore feet from the frozen ground. Laminitis can occur from trauma to the sole due to walking on rough, frozen ground. Occasionally, if hooves are not maintained throughout the winter and allowed to break off, it may be difficult to have the horse shod when spring comes.

Caring for horses over the winter months can be a difficult task with cold weather, frozen water and strong winds. However, the better horses are maintained during the winter, the better condition they will be in once the weather warms and it is time to start riding again. No matter how difficult the weather, providing appropriate feed, water and shelter for horses is critical.
