Meet Binigrau.“I knew the reds could be compelling, but I’d never had a white from Mallorca that gave me goosebumps,” says Eric. Ironically, the stunning physical beauty of Mallorca, with its postcard-perfect views of rocky cliffs dropping down into a bright blue sea, is one of the main reasons why the island exports so little wine; tourists drink the majority. At the winery in Biniali on the island of Mallorca, Binigrau uses state-of-the-art technology to make their wines, while preserving some traditional manual techniques when handling the grapes. Biological prod-ucts are used to cultivate the grapes, applying the age-old system of biodynamics in the cultivation, pruning of the plants and harvesting of the grapes.

Available: 2010 Nounat is a blend of 50% Prensal and 50% Chardonnay. 2007 Obac is a blend 50% Mantonegro, 25% Merlot,15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah.

Meet Herencia-Altes.Tucked away in the southeastern corner of Catalonia, bordering Aragon and Valencia, Terra Alta has always boasted a large area of old Grenache (Garnatxa) bush vines, but the majority of the grapes have always been sold to large produc-ers outside the region. Recently a few vintners have begun rebelling against the large-batch mentality and producing smaller artisanal wines. Among them is Núria Altés, who grew up playing in vineyards that were planted by her grandfa-ther in 1902 and who considers her Garnatxa Blanca and Garnatxa Negra a trib-ute to “the pride of the land where I was born and the legacy of my grandfather, somebody so important in my life.” As the name implies, the vineyards of Benufet in Terra Alta are elevated, and the region is much like the Priorat - old vines at high altitudes. But where the soil of the Priorat is largely slate, Terra Alta is all chalk, resulting in a lighter, more vibrant wine. It’s a simple formula: old vines plus no wood, all tank, equals delicious.

Meet L’Esprit de la Fontaine.Ferreting out great wines from the once-unexplored region of Languedoc is how Eric started his career, and he is now part owner of a vineyard that he says “may be the most beautiful and bucolic enclave in all of Languedoc.” Joining him in Esprit de la Fontaine are his old friend Philippe Salasc, the owner of the estate where Eric and Daphne were married, Laurent Audiot, chef at the Parisian restau-rant La Fontaine Gaillon, winemaker Laurent Vidal, and the actor Gerard Depar-dieu. Depardieu has wine projects with many big producers who love to men-tion his famous name, but was drawn to Esprit de la Fontaine for the same reason as the others: he was struck with the poetic quality of the region. The vineyard employs no technology, hand-harvests, and only gravity is used to move the grapes, because the partners are aiming to produce a wine reminiscent of how grapes might have been grown in that region 50 years ago.

Availabe: 2007 and 2008 L’Esprit de la Fontaine is a blend of 50% Syrah, 25% Grenache and 25% Carignan.

Meet Clos d’Agon.The Celler Clos d’Agon was purchased by a group of six friends from Switzerland in 1998, making a dream become reality for the new owners, all of whom are attached to the wine business either through distributing, retail sales or winery ownership. The winery itself is only 11 years old. The estate is breathtaking – located on the hills above the village of Calonge, in the region of Bajo Empordá (80 km north of Barcelona), overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, which is only 3 km away. The vineyards are located in the heart of the natural park of ’Les Gaverres” in the Catalan granitic massif of Girona. The climate is Mediterranean, with influences from the moisture bearing winds from the south and cold winds from the north. This allows the grapes to ripen evenly during the season with-out the stress due to high heat. Immediately hired was wizard winemaker, Peter Sisseck, to produce the first vintage of white and red, and who continues on as a consultant. Excellent results are already evident; there is a complex, sophisticated white wine available, as well as a deeply concentrated, expressive red wine.

Available: 2010 Amic is a blend of 64% Garnacha,17% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Syrah and 2% Monastrell.2010 Blanco is a blend of 40% Rous-sanne, 35% Viognier and 25% Marsanne. 2009 Tinto is blend of 35 % Syrah, 32 % Cabernet Franc,13 % Merlot, 10 % Cabernet Sauvignon and10 % Petit Verdot.

Meet Benjamin Romeo.Benjamin Romeo grew up learning winemaking and gained a passion for the vineyards from both his father and grandfather. His almost Burgundian approach was subsequently combined with a formal education in oenology leading to a career dedicated to the Rioja. His passion bore innovation and he quickly gained noteriety, eventually becoming the winemaker at the winery, Artadi. After 15 years, he began to practice microvinifications, making his first wine, La Cueva del Contador, between his father’s garage and a medieval castle. It’s not surpris-ing that the wine’s namesake is that of its place of aging. He very quickly received international recognition when his 2004 Cantador was awarded 100 points from The Wine Advocate. Benjamin Romeo’s Contador is one of only two Spanish wines ever to receive consecutive 100 point ratings from Robert Parker. You’ll find that personal connection and passion in all of Benjamin’s wines. For instance, Predicator, meaning preacher, is inspired by Clint Eastwood’s Pale Rider, one of Benjamin’s favorite movies. Be sure to check out the label and you’ll understand the reference. And then there’s Contador’s label, a picture of a clock tower, the exact one that stands over his bodega. La Viña de Andrés is named in honor of this father, Andrés. In fact, Benjamin started out with just a small vineyard given to him by his father. Driven by passion and innovation, Benjamin Romeo’s wines exude those qualities from the grape to the table.

§ Prices are in Euros for all DI orders unless otherwise specified. § Prices are in Dollars for all stateside orders. § All prices are subject to change without notice. § All shipping for ESS wines is to be done via Hillebrand. § All orders and pricing are door to port. § All orders must be placed as a full container

o 20’ container : § Minimum number of cases: 650 ( if a lesser number of cases is

loaded, this is the minimum we will invoice ) § Maximum number of cases: 800 ( this maximum is set for

invoicing purposes only, meaning that if more than 800 are loaded, only 800 will be invoiced)

o 40’ container: § Minimum number of cases: 850 ( if a lesser number of cases is

loaded , this is the minimum we will invoice ) § Maximum number of cases: 1000 ( this maximum is set for

invoicing purposes only , meaning that if more than 1,000 are loaded, you will be billed for 1,000 only, provided the weight limit is not exceeded ).

§ All orders must be placed in increments listed on the price list: Pallet, layer or by the case.

§ Since all containers will be delivered within 30 to 50 days (provided they are made as instructed), the cancellation/change policy for an order is 48 hours.

§ You are still free to use your broker but please inform Hillebrand and European Cellars. § All containers shipped between 5/15 and 10/15 MUST be temperature controlled. § You are free to put wines from other non-ESS producers, but Hillebrand will be the

freight forwarder and the consolidation time will take longer. § You are free to share a container with other wholesalers but the wine will be delivered

to one and only one location. § We strongly recommend you place your order with your ESS Sales rep so he/she can

inform you of all the wine present in the warehouse in order to avoid unnecessary delays.
