Nationalism and the Second World War in Southeast Asia
Extract A: Brunei during the Second World War
Brunei was affected when war broke out in theinvaded. The Japanese then took full control andof government.
Pacific area in 1941. lt was soonbegan to organise their own form
The Japanese occupation had an effect on all aspecls of life in Brunei. The policyof Nipponisation was particularly important. In addition the Kempetai was active inBrunei. lts activities increased the feeling of Japanese domination.
Extract B: Effects of Japanese Occupation on the Brunei Nationalists
Before the war began in 1941 , there had been various organisations in Brunei whichpromoted nationalism. The presence of the Japanese during the war was importantto the further development of nationalism.
But by 1944, the Japanese were losing ground in the war. After three and a halfyears of occupation, the Japanese in Bruneiwere forced to surrender and the PacificWar ended soon afterwards.
