In this issue o Marianjoy Matters we highlight
two stories that demonstrate our patient-
centered approach to innovative rehabilitation
care Te first details the remarkable recovery
o a young woman ollowing a stroke and a
unique therapeutic approach developed by a
Marianjoy therapist to help her achieve hergoals We also explore the lielong relationship
between the pediatric team at Marianjoy and tw in
sisters dealing with the challenges o cerebral

the thousands o patients who find success at
Marianjoy each year

Driving to her parentsrsquo home on Christmas Day 2012 Jennier Schauer
turned her head to change lanes and heard a crunching sound in
her neck Instantly she elt excruciating pain and extreme nausea
Diagnosed with a vertebral artery dissection a stroke and Wallenberg
Syndromemdasha rare neurological disorder that results in swallowing
vision and balance issuesmdashJennier aced a long and challenging
recovery Her physician recommended Marianjoy or its specialized
inpatient stroke rehabilitation program
Upon Jennierrsquos arrival Marianjoyrsquos
rehabilitative care team developed a
therapy program specific to her needs
and goals She would relearn how to
swallow eat and speak over the course
o a ew weeks and then in Marianjoyrsquos
outpatient therapy program she would
work on her strength balance and
coordination
One day while working on walking her Marianjoy physical therapist
suggested to Jennier that jogging might be a good way to work on
balance and coordination ldquoMy brain didnrsquot have time to think about
each movement so I just started to relaxrdquo Jennier eventually regained
her ability to walk and she began to use running as a orm o therapy
As an avid cyclist and runner prior to her stroke she challenged hersel
to train or a race
In July 2013 a mere seven months afer her devastating stroke Jennier
crossed the finish line at the Cadence Health Winfield 5k Run
ldquoI credit my Marianjoy care team with helping me in my recoveryrdquo
Jennier explains ldquoTeir assurance o my ability to recover gave me the
confidence to do things that I did not think were possiblerdquo

Juleah and Gianna Puccinelli share a lot more than DNA These
identical twins just began college together this year with the
support of a Marianjoy Scholarship Their relationship with
Marianjoy started when they were just two years old As a
result of a premature birth at only 26 weeks the girls were
born with Cerebral Palsy At the time of their birth premature
babies born at 25 weeks had a 50 percent chance of survival
and a 50 percent chance of having a disability The statistics
have since improved
The Puccinellis chose Marianjoy
for all of Juleah and Giannarsquos
rehabilitation needs including
physical occupational and
aquatic therapy They also
received custom orthotics
at a young age to help their
situational balance and muscle
tightness issues Both girls say
that Marianjoyrsquos support has been instrumental throughout
their lives ldquoI never felt like just another patient at Marianjoyrdquo
says Gianna ldquoThe doctors and therapists donrsquot stop caring
about your improvement when the appointment is overrdquo Even
though they no longer need triweekly therapy sessions they
still come back for check-ups and advice
Now excelling in college both girls say that their journey with
Marianjoy inspired their career choicesmdashGianna in nursing
and Juleah in communications ldquoMarianjoy has taught us what
it means to be surrounded by people who make it their job to

Cerebral Palsy is an extremely
complicated disorder Some
children are mildly affected while
others may have more severe
involvement which can
be challenging to treat
At Marianjoy we design individual
treatment programs that may
include physical occupational
andor speech therapy to address
the childrsquos unique needs We also
emphasize family education and
involvement as a vital part of
therapy
We frequently utilize episodes
of care rather than just
recommending weeks and months
of therapy and we use home
programs that are designed to
meet each childrsquos specific needs
in the context of their families
We also like to refer families to

so parents can find free and
reliable answers at any time
Juleah and Gianna Puccinelli share a lot more than DNA These
identical twins just began college together this year with the
support of a Marianjoy Scholarship Their relationship with
Marianjoy started when they were just two years old As a
result of a premature birth at only 26 weeks the girls were
born with Cerebral Palsy At the time of their birth premature
babies born at 25 weeks had a 50 percent chance of survival
and a 50 percent chance of having a disability The statistics
have since improved
The Puccinellis chose Marianjoy
for all of Juleah and Giannarsquos
rehabilitation needs including
physical occupational and
aquatic therapy They also
received custom orthotics
at a young age to help their
situational balance and muscle
tightness issues Both girls say
that Marianjoyrsquos support has been instrumental throughout
their lives ldquoI never felt like just another patient at Marianjoyrdquo
says Gianna ldquoThe doctors and therapists donrsquot stop caring
about your improvement when the appointment is overrdquo Even
though they no longer need triweekly therapy sessions they
still come back for check-ups and advice
Now excelling in college both girls say that their journey with
Marianjoy inspired their career choicesmdashGianna in nursing
and Juleah in communications ldquoMarianjoy has taught us what
it means to be surrounded by people who make it their job to
care and make it easy to work hardrdquo says Juleah ldquoWe both
want to pass that care and compassion on to others toordquo
