“In an increasingly hostile, greedy and Machiavellian world, being an artist allows space for a breath of fresh air, and in many ways is its own reward. It is one of the few places where we can dwell on the useless, the impractical, the ludicrous, and the downright mad and get away with it. Which is not to say, of course, that it is a serious and rigorous pursuit. But there is already enough out there that is “purpose built”, whatever that strange grim term might mean. It is our job, and our privilege to explore and create things that have no purpose as such, and in so doing do things that might hopefully give purpose to us all.”
Doug Fishbone, Artist, Lecturer.
This innovative fine art course was one of the first to offer students the opportunity to explore and develop work across boundaries, within the ever-expanding contemporary fine art disciplines. The course encourages creativity, individuality and personal growth, once you have acquired the basic skills, you can negotiate your own individual programme of study with tutors.
Emphasis is placed on highly individual approaches to studio practice and this, coupled with an emphasis on experiential learning, are the defining factors that have established the course at the cutting edge of contemporary practice.
We select only 44 of the most dedicated and creative students who have the energy, enthusiasm and commitment that the course requires.
The course has an exceptional team of practising artists teaching theory and practice. This is supported by state-of-the-art facilities and workshops that are at the forefront of current technical innovation.
COURSE CONTENT
Year 2 (credit level 5)Major modules in studio practice continue throughout Year 2 (Credit Level 5). You discuss your aims with both personal and module tutors, and develop your work in the studios. You also choose from a range of contextual studies options, undertake a work placement and are introduced to curatorial issues through exhibitions both within the University and outside.
Year 3 (credit level 6)You work on major fine art practice modules preparing for your degree exhibition; you discuss your work with the course team, but work with increasing autonomy. You undertake a substantial piece of written investigation in the dissertation, and complete your studies with a launch pad module, preparing you to present your work in the public arena.
Subjects of study include: Painting • Photography • Printmaking • Sculpture • Site Specific • Video and Audio / Visual Installation • Performance and Web-based Practice
TEACHING AND ASSESSMENTTeaching is based on tutor-guided studio practice, supported by a structured programme of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Course work is assessed through exhibitions, journals evaluations and contextual studies essays.
ASSOCIATED CAREERS Many graduates continue to exhibit their work, often combining this with opportunities in curation, public arts projects, museum and gallery work, education, and related fields such as web design and event co-ordination.
TYPICAL OFFER FOR SEPTEMBER 2017
Qualification Grade/points A levels BB/CCCInternational 26 points (minimum)Baccalaureate BTEC MMM Level 3Extended National Diploma
Ideally you should have passed the BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design but other equivalent qualifications are welcomed. You should have a portfolio of practical work to bring to interview.
The course initially provides you with the opportunity to develop work in a number of different fine art territories, and from these initial encounters you negotiate a programme to support your own approach to practice. The course enables you to work across disciplines or within the more traditionally defined areas of practice, in keeping with the contemporary approach to fine art practice. Relevant critical and theoretical debates are referenced to support this.
Year 1 (credit level 4)You are introduced to subject areas including painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation, sound, performance, web-based and other digital applications. An introduction to the sources of contemporary practice is offered via lectures and seminars. Individual fine art practice begins from outset, along with some specialist study choices. Issues of contemporary practice are discussed to support this in contextual studies lectures, seminars and presentations.
