SETTING STANDARDS ON THE ROAD

An acknowledged trend-setter, this fourth-generation L200 was thefirst pick-up to replace the old torsion bar front suspension systemwith independent double wishbones and coiled springs – just astough, just as workmanlike but giving you a far better ride. It was alsothe first pick-up to utilise power assisted rack and pinion steering, so it’s easier to drive and provides by far the tightest turning circle – a real boon when parking or manoeuvring around Britain’s crowdedstreets. And for many years it was the only pick-up to include anelectronic traction control system, which ensures notably superiorhandling in tricky situations. It is still the only double cab to offer a full-time on-road four-wheel drive capability, making it the towingsupremo, and the only one to offer standard and long bed variants forthose who need extra space.

Never, ever before has a pick-up afforded so much space, in fact, the L200double cab has the biggest cab in its class by a mile! But this vehicleisn’t about size, it’s about paying attention to the finer points. It’s aboutmaking the most of all that space with comfortable seats, complete withheight adjustment for the driver. It’s about pampering passengers withhead restraints all round for comfort and safety, and truly clever storagewhich means that your pick-up keeps in peak condition no matter who youhave on board.

MORE POWER, LESS PAIN

The L200’s 2.5 litre, turbocharged, intercooled engineis a quieter, cleaner, more economical power-plant thanyou might expect to find in a pick-up, meeting Euro 4emissions criteria and returning an exceptional 33.6 mpgon the combined cycle. Acceleration is lively and it feelsquicker than the figures would lead you to believe – it’sparticularly flexible in 5th gear – cruising happily attypical motorway speeds. But, if you still need rather moreoomph, opt for an L200 Animal or a Warrior long bed. Inthese models the ECU has been programmed to produce atleast 30 bhp more, resulting in a three second improvementin the 0-62 mph sprint. Indeed, these models are true pick-up GTIs, offering the best power to weight ratio available in the UK. Getting the very best from the engine is asmooth-shifting, five-speed manual gearbox as standard,alternatively, you can choose a four-speed automatictransmission complete with overdrive on most models.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Mitsubishi has long been recognised as the master of tough terrain, and the L200 offers achoice of superior drivetrains with which to tame the rough stuff. Long tested in the Shogunand unique in the world of pick-ups the Super Select system enables on-road driving witheither two or four wheels engaged – giving extra grip on the asphalt when you need it – andtwo four-wheel drive modes for use off-road. Alternatively, the Easy Select system offers on-road two-wheel drive and the same two off-road modes plus a heavy-duty rear differential lockwhich operates only in 4LLc. Engaged via a switch conveniently positioned on the dashboard,this locks the differential so that both rear wheels turn together, a superior method ofproviding extra traction when the going gets really, really tough.

2H: 2WD high range is generally best forhighway cruising or city driving, givingsmooth, economical perfor mance. As drivingconditions change, so can this L200 – onthe move. At speeds of up to 62mph you canshift between 2H, 4H and 4HLc without evenneeding to use the clutch.

4H: 4WD high range is the full-time 4WDmode available only on the Super Selectsystem. Torque is split equally betweenfront and rear axles, offering the extra grip needed for safe highway driving inslippery conditions. The centre diff -erential with VCU resolves the traditional4WD problem of transmission wind-upexperienced during cornering and tightmanoeuvres.

4HLc: In 4WD high range with the centredifferential locked power is evenly distributedbetween the front and rear wheels, improvingtraction and manoeuvrability on rough roads or on sandy or snow-covered surfaces.

4LLc: 4WD low range with the centre differentiallocked lowers the centre differential gear ratio.This provides greater torque for climbing ordescending steep inclines at very low speeds,or for going through deep snow, mud or sand.To shift into or out of 4LLc the L200 must bebrought to a complete halt.

PICKING UP STARS IN THE SAFETY STAKES

The L200 is tough, strong and supremely safe, indeed, so comprehensive are its safetymeasures that it is the only pick-up to achieve a four-star EuroNCAP rating. It was thefirst pick-up to feature a stability and traction control system: this aids traction in bothon- and off-road situations by optimizing braking and power to each wheel individually whenit senses a potential skid. M-ASTC does this automatically, by simultaneously activating thecorrect brakes to maintain traction whilst redistributing power to the wheels with the mostgrip, thus ensuring maximum grip under all driving conditions.

Of course, the greater the load the harder it is to stop, and this is particularly relevant in apick-up. Mitsubishi’s Anti-lock Braking System features Electronic Brake-force Distribution(EBD) which adjusts the level of braking power applied between the front and rear wheelsdepending upon the load.

Incorporating Mitsubishi’s RISE (ReinforcedImpact Safety Evolution) the L200’s bodycombines a strong, ladder-frame chassis –with 50% better torsional rigidity and 70%better longitutinal rigidity even than itshighly acclaimed predecessor – frontcrumple zones which absorb impact energyand strategic reinforcement which helps tomaintain the integrity of the cabin and soprotect the occupants.

In the States they have long been driving pick-ups for pure pleasure,a concept introduced into the UK with vehicles like this Double CabWarrior. Dressed to impress with stylish front guard, alloy wheelsand plenty of chrome, air conditioning and the optional soft sheenof leather, this vehicle is primed for play, particularly in long bedguise which also enjoys the more powerful, 175 bhp engine.
