What is Mitosis????What is Mitosis????
• The process by which a Eukaryotic Cell divides/separates the chromosomes in the nucleus into two separate cells.
• These cells are identical daughter cells!!
![Page 3: Mitosis 2](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022100604/559874001a28ab42478b465b/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
The Phases……Interphase• I is for Identifiable!
– In this stages chromosomes appear to be a big jumble! They are UnIdentifiable
• Chromatin appears in the middle of the nuclear envelope
• Chromosomes are copied• This stage is technically
NOT mitosis…we are just getting ready!

The Phases...........ProphaseThe Phases...........Prophase
• P is for Pairs• Chromatin condenses
to be viewed as rod like pairs (chromosomes)
• Chromosome pairs are easily seen during this phase.
• The centromeres are moving to opposite sides of the cell.
![Page 5: Mitosis 2](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022100604/559874001a28ab42478b465b/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
The Phases……..MetaphaseThe Phases……..Metaphase
• M is for Middle• Chromosomes line
up in the middle of the cell
• Mitotic Spindles from the centromere creepcreep out and attach to the chromosomes.
• Nuclear envelope dissolves
![Page 6: Mitosis 2](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022100604/559874001a28ab42478b465b/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
The Phases………AnaphaseThe Phases………Anaphase
• A is for Apart• Mitotic Spindle
Fibers pull the chomosomes apart!!– Toward opposite
sides of the cell
• Each Chromosome is now two separate chromatids!!
![Page 7: Mitosis 2](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022100604/559874001a28ab42478b465b/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The Phases…………TelophaseThe Phases…………Telophase
• T is for Two Cells• A new nuclear
membrane forms• The cell begins pulling
apart to create two separate cells!!!– Done through cleavage
furrow
• Cytokinesis follows– Cell pinches in two to
become two separate cells.

Can you find examples of each phase?
