ProtectBy Al JohnsonSat 28 February – Sat 13 June 2015
A new commission on behalf of the North Sta"s Miners Wives Group with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Mitchell Arts Centre. Johnson has had a longstanding interest in the mining industry, making the work Black Diamonds following the strikes in the 90s. Thirty years on, Johnson revisits the theme through her new installation ‘Protect’. Using the iconic images of the riot shield extensively used by the police, the work celebrates the solidarity shown, by the miners and their families.
