Hoffa by Marvin Kropp, President, Joint Council 13 Hoffa SCHolarSHiP fund James R. Hoffa became a Teamster member in 1934 and served as General President for 14 years, and, in recognition of his tireless service to the Union and its members, was honored as General President Emeritus for life. At the November 1999 General Executive Board meeting former General Secretary-Treasurer C. Thomas Keegel presented a resolution to establish the new scholarship fund. Since that time hundreds of scholarships have been given to children of Teamsters. Something I can say is that I’m very proud that such a fund was set up to assist our Teamster children’s future in the ever increasing costs of educa- tion. Hands down this opportunity has been a winner since it’s inception. Each year applicants are received from each one of the five Teamster regions. One hundred fifty (150) scholarships will be awarded this year alone with thirty one (31) awards at $10,000 each. These four-year scholarships are disbursed at the rate of $2,500 per year and are renewable annually. One hundred and nineteen of the awards are onetime $1,000 grants. These scholarships are disbursed to the college or university at the beginning of the recipient’s freshman year. Applications are available at all Team- ster Locals and also at the Joint Council 13 office. For an applicant to be eligible they must be the son or daughter or grandchild of a Teamster parent or grandparent. There are other requirements for eligibility so be sure to get the proper requirement list from your local union. Over the past years since the funds inception many of our own Joint Council 13 Teamster children have benefit- ed from this great opportunity. Each year the fund grows larger, and it is a testament to all of those who have supported this program since 1999. Help- ing our children to prepare for the future is one of the greatest gifts our union can provide. As the next generation of leaders it will be our children that will continue to grow the Teamsters, and further the causes of trade unionism. So if you should have any questions at all don’t hesitate to call your local union. If you would like to have your child or grandchild apply as an applicant do so quickly, the final cut off date is March 31, 2013. In closing, I would like to quote Gen- eral President James R. Hoffa from 1966 “Teamster sons and daughters deserve the best education possible.” That still holds true today in 2013. Teamsters Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr., Honor His Struggle For Equality And Workers’ Rights Martin Luther King changed the Ameri- can landscape for minority groups, work- ers, and the poor in his quest to end the scourge of racial injustice and segrega- tion in our society. He was an unwavering supporter of the labor movement and ulti- mately gave his life fighting for the rights of working people. “On this holiday, and every day, the Teamsters honor the prin- ciples that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for as we march humbly in his footsteps,” said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General Presi- dent. “Dr. King knew that civil rights and workers’ rights are fundamentally bound together. We can’t fight for the rights and dignity of workers without combating rac- ism and all forms of discrimination.” The Teamsters proudly stood with King in 1961, donating more than $25,000 to King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference and sending supplies to civil rights activists marching in Selma and Montgomery, Alabama. The struggle for King did not end with the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. He launched the “Poor People’s Campaign” as the second phase of the civil rights movement in 1966, demanding living wages for people of all races. Two years later, King was assassi- nated in Memphis where he was marching in solidarity with 1,300 union sanitation workers on strike. Last year, Teamster sanitation workers at Republic Services/Allied Waste fought in the very best tradition of King, demand- ing a share of the company’s success and invoking the spirit of King with the iconic statement, “I am a man.” “Dr. King was an American hero and a champion for workers everywhere,” said Al Mixon, International Vice President and President of the Team- sters National Black Caucus. “As workers face an onslaught of attacks by politicians and groups pushing right-to-work-for-less laws, we have to remember King’s own words about these kinds of attacks. He called right to work a fraud that provides no rights and no work, a law designed to destroy collective bargaining rights.” “King would be by our side fighting against the war on workers if he were alive today,” said Hoffa. “We work every day to preserve and advance the rights of all American workers – I can think of no better way to keep King’s dream alive to- day.”
