Yeast Starters and Stir Plates: Making a yeast starter is an easy and an economical way to increase yeast population and to “proof” your starting yeast. A yeast starter revives yeast, improves yeast health, activates metabolism and helps beer fermentation start faster. Pitching 100 billion cells (one White Labs yeast vial or one WYEAST activator pack) in a 1.5 – 2.0 L starter (SG of 1.030 – 1.040) on a stir plate will about double the number of viable yeast cells (equivalent of another vial of yeast!) needed for a 5 gal batch of ale. Grow a starter for 24 – 48 hrs, allow the yeast cells to settle (white solids). Brew your beer. Just prior to pitching, decant off the spent wort (liquid portion) and pitch the remaining yeast slurry into your oxygenated beer using aseptic technique. Does not flocculate as much as WLP002 and WLP005.
