from the Editor

The fi rst time I read that, my fi rst reaction was, “wait a minute, if this is right, then I have been wrong for years.” Many of us have been busy for years pur-suing what we thought was the formula for knowing God’s will and actually neglecting our relationship with Him. I realized that I had possessed a shal-low desire to do God’s will, but most often allowed my own will to reign. Much like a man I dealt with several years ago. We were in a counseling situ-ation one day and I had asked him why he kept coming to me. I didn’t feel like we were getting very far. He said, “Well, I’m here for you to help me fi nd out what God’s will for my life is, and if I like it I will do it.”

Sadly, there are many Christians today who, when confronted with God’s will, feel as if their options are whether they like it or think they can do it. Nei-ther one is valid.

I think Blackaby is right on the money. The only way to hear God’s voice and accurately discern His will is to be in such a close relationship with Him that there can be no doubt in your mind. When He speaks, you are so used to hearing His voice that you can hear it immediately and know it is Him. The only way to achieve that state is to work on your relationship with Him above all else. After all, why should we expect God to reveal His will to those who do not have a enduring, daily relationship with Him? He knows that probably would not choose to be a part of His will and work. He knows they would not carry through with his will. They would get distracted and begin to follow their own, easier will, neglecting His.

Did you hear about the email from God? Don’t hold your breath; He has already given us His word. There is enuogh of His will revealed therein to keep us busy the rest of our lives!

Did you hear that God has sent an email to all his faithful followers? And do you know what it said? You don’t? Oh…you didn’t…get one? Wouldn’t it be great if fi nding the will of God was as easy as a daily email from the Lord. All you would have to do is open your inbox and there it would be, straight from the throne room. God’s personalized will for your life for the day.

I am sure that for most of us who are God’s faithful followers, the burning desire of our hearts is to know God’s will for us. That is, if we take time to think about it. Sadly, most of us are too busy to be overly concerned that it has been a long time since we really felt plugged in to His will. I am sure that if you set a group of His followers down and asked them if they wanted to know God’s will for their life, their answer would be an unhesitating yes. We know His will is the best way to live and will bring us to the place of satisfaction and fulfi llment better than our efforts. Yet, our efforts seem to occupy more of our time than we are giving to pursuing His will.

So, just how do we fi nd God’s will? Is there a method given in the scripture for getting online with Him? Surely there is a seven or twelve or twenty-step pro-gram just waiting for us to open our eyes to His glori-ous will. I once saw a tract in a bookstore titled “How to Find God’s Will in Seven Easy Steps.” I stealthily picked it up to see what this amazing method might be. I say stealthily because preachers are supposed to have stuff like that nailed down, right? As I opened the tract, I was disappointed to see that the method was the word “pray” written seven times.

Is that the answer? Well, I think it is part of the an-swer. I have just completed teaching an adult class at Camp Niangua for sponsors and workers. We looked at one unit from Henry Blackaby’s Experiencing God. It was about hearing and recognizing God’s voice. He is insistent that there is no formula or method for hearing the voice of God and recognizing His will. He says it is a relationship, not a method or program.

Missouri Show-Me Missions

Antioch, TN—The Go10 Walk that climaxed in July 2010 at the National Association in Oklahoma City was a wonderful accomplishment thanks to the contribution of thousands of participants and donors. The Walk was a memorable means of honoring our Mission heritage and an exciting method of challenging future genera-tions. In addition, the Walk raised over $600,000 of much-needed income for missions. FWBIM expresses our sincere appreciation for every person, step, gift, and prayer that enabled the Go10 Walk to be an over-whelming success.

One thing we as a Mission did not do well, however, was communicate the details of the matching gift. As a result, there are questions and misunderstandings we feel are important to address. Though the matching gift was not a cash gift, in the promotion of the Go10 Walk this was not always clearly communicated. Many, therefore, understood the matching gift to be a cash gift. Instead, it is a planned gift in the form of a double life Charitable Remainder Uni-trust (CRUT).

The donor originally set up the trust in 2005 naming The Hanna Project as benefi ciary. When approached

Go10 Walk Matching FundsGo10 Walk Matching Funds

about the idea of Go10 and using $500,000 of that trust as a matching gift for the Walk, the donor readily agreed. Both the donor and FWBIM wanted the gift to not only help the Mission, but also to motivate and excite other supporters. This certainly occurred, and the $500,000 goal was surpassed. The CRUT now names FWBIM as the benefi ciary and at the deaths of the donors IM will receive the market value of the trust fund.

We apologize for our failure to communicate these facts clearly and for the misunderstandings that have resulted. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact Board Chairman Danny Wil-liams ([email protected]; 205-412-0296). FWBIM is thankful for everything accomplished through the Go10 Walk and we ask for your continued support as we strive to bring people to Christ and plant churches throughout the world.

Thank you for your prayers! Ken and I have both arrived safely back in Japan, and this past week has been spent in reestablishing many of our contacts in the neighborhood. Each place we go: post offi ce, bank, restaurants, grocery stores, util-ity offi ces, meeting our neighbors, people are saying, “You’re back! We thought most of the foreigners had left after the earthquake and tsunami and would not return to Japan! We are so glad that you are here!” How humbling that is to us, to be THANKED for returning to the land that has been our home for the past 28 years, in order to follow God’s command for our lives! Please pray in the days ahead that we will be used of God to witness and share the love of Christ with the hurting Japanese people. God is GREAT! Pray that we will have many opportunities to be ambassa-dors of Christ in our daily lives and be examples of His love!

State Meeting 2011State Meeting 2011The Missouri State Association met for their 98th annual session on June 6-8 at the Clarion Hotel in Springfi eld, MO. Ac-tivities began Sunday afternoon with our fi rst annual MO Box Derby race. Church Youth groups from all over Missouri used a new curriculum developed by Bruce Moore to teach Biblical prin-ciples in the course of building Mo Box Derby race cars. Cars from four churches were there and after the dust settled, from First Church in Mtn. Grove was the overall winner.

The Youth service followed at 6:00 and featured the music of the Hillsdale Singers, fol-lowed by a great message from Heath Hubbard. Heath and his wife Joni will be serving in Spain with the Hanna Project. They plan to enter language school this fall.

The SCM Music and Arts Festi-val followed. (a list of all participants can be found on page.9) All the competition was completed and awards given by midnight Sunday.

The State Association was convened Monday by State Clerk Rev. Keith Garrison. Rev. Rick Dement, our outgoing moderator spoke on “Preaching the Word of the Gos-pel.” He did a great job setting the tone for

our entire meeting. Music for the evening was provided by the Hillsdale Singers. Our congregational music was led by Rev. Greg Smith and a worship team, accompanied by an instrumental group. Presid-ing was our Moderator, Rev. Ken Simpson.

Tuesday saw a busy schedule of activities. The Mis-souri Women Active for Christ began their meeting that morning with a business session and morning service with Rev. Glenn Murray as the speaker.

Also on Tuesday morning, the Executive Committee met followed by the General Board meeting at 1:30 that afternoon. The MOWAC concluded their meeting that afternoon with the installation of their new offi c-ers featuring Elizabeth Hodges , WNAC Executive Director, conducting the ceremony.

The Tuesday evening service led by Greg Smith and the praise team, featured the music of New Mercy from FWB-BC, accom-panied by Susan For-lines, Dean of Women at the Col-lege. Rev. Bruce Moore presided and Rev. Gary Fry preached “Persevering in the Hope of the Gospel.”

Wednesday was a day of business, beginning with a devotion by Rev. Brandon Mcintosh. Moderator Ken Simpson conducted the meet-ing as all our State Boards as well as our National Ministries brought reports. With business nearing an end, the body work through the lunch hour and fi nished all business by

1:00.

All our boards reported great progress in 2010. We had

a full slate of events and retreats for the year. While our Cooperative Fund receipts were down

by 2.25% over last year, Missouri Free Will Baptists still gave $710,193.13 for the Lord’s work. None of our ministries were curtailed even though we did fall short of our projected budget.

Our people rejoiced to hear of the great blessing re-

ceived by our camp. Almost one half missions dollars have been contributed to build a new dining complex. As of this writing, the fi rst of camp is underway, and while not completed, the new dining hall and snack shop are operational! God is faithful!

Also in our business session we

voted to establish a Disaster Relief Fund at the State Offi ce for Joplin and similar events. We also voted to move the location of our State As-sociational meeting for 2012 to the Ramada Oasis Convention Center on North Glenstone in Springfi eld.

Our Wednesday evening Mis-sions Service featured Jenna Altom porviding our special music and Rev. Clint Morgan our Interim IM Director preach-ing from the topic, “Reaching the World with the Light of the Gospel.”Missions Director Rev. Frank Webster pre-sided over the service.

As everyone left the service Wednesday night there was

a satisfying feeling to know that we had expe-rienced another smooth Missouri State meeting. We had heard good preaching and sing-ing, spent time with our friends, some of whom we see only once a year at the meet-ing, and voted to continue the work of the Lord in our state and around

the world.

Joplin DisasterBelow you will fi nd photos of what is left of Generations Free Will Baptist Chuch of Joplin. It, along with a good portion of the town was destroyed when an F5 tornado blew through on May 22nd as several choir members were practicing. With short warning they gathered in an inner room of the church to pray. God answered their prayers. That was the only room of the church untouched. By the time you read this, thing will look different in Joplin. God has used Free Will Baptists al across America to help meet the needs of our church and her people. Funds are being collected for the church at our state offi ce in our Disaster Relief Fund. For more information and more photos and video, go to our state website at www.mofwb.org.

On May 29, 2011 the First Free Will Baptist Church at Kirksville, Missouri was the scene of a reunion of the Young People’s Auxiliary which was organized there in 1954. It was started with 15 charter members un-der the leadership of the fIrst pastor Lester C. Jones.

Nine of the original charter members were present for the reunion, with a total attendance of sixty- fIve. Most of this 65 had gone thru the youth program here or had been a youth leader here sometime in these last 57 years. The theme “What Have You Done With Your Dash, 1954 - 2011” was to make us question how we had used the last 57 years the Lord had given us. The service was patterned after the services the young people used to have back in the ‘50’s after Keith Phipps, Vernon Maggart, and Jerry Pinkerton an-swered the call to preach. (Keith’s health kept him from being present). We sang the same songs, a his-tory of the Youth Group was read, some testimonies given, letters from absentees read.

The Lindquist Family Trio from Greentop did the spe-cial music, singing “On the Jerico Road” and “Just a Little Talk With Jesus”. Brother Vernon Maggart gave a short message on “The Will of God”, and Brother Jerry Pinkerton spoke on “Present your Bodies a Liv-ing SacrifIce”.

After the worship service, the group went to a near-by city park for a picnic lunch, more visiting and pictures. We want to thank the Hazel Creek FWB Church for all their help in making it possible for us to use the Kirksville building. This is where most of us met the Lord, dedicated our lives to His service, and where many of us met our spouses!

Ministers’ Wives’ RetreatMinisters’ Wives’ Retreat

The second annual Missouri Free Will Baptist Ministers’ Wives’ Retreat was held April 15th and 16th at The Resort at Port Arrowhead overlooking beautiful Lake of the Ozarks.

The theme of the retreat was “Women Under Con-struction”. Women arrived early Friday afternoon and received a folder decorated with caution and duct tape - fi lled with tablet, pen, booklet, tape measure and a “Payday” candy bar.

Each minister’s wife was able to select a door prize as names were drawn throughout the retreat. A book swap was held Friday evening and some stayed up late enjoying visiting and playing games. Wives participated in friendly competition with “One Minute Construction Zone Word Search”, “Minute-To-Win-It Nuts and Bolts Toss” and a team “Cookie Decorating Contest”. “100 Grand” candy bars were given as prizes.

Guest speaker, Sandra Trivett (pastor’s wife, former missionary and women’s ministry director) and her

daughter, Sheila Green)shared during sessions titled: “Laying the Foundation”, “Tools of the Trade”, and “The Walk Through”. Stacia Crump led in praise and worship.

Friday evening’s meal was a “Build Your Own Taco Salad Bar” with each team eating their decorated cookie for dessert. A delicious breakfast buffet was provided at the lakeside restaurant Saturday morn-ing. Women were able to relax, encourage and enjoy one another. Saturday’s fi nal session, “Clean Up”, gave ministers’ wives an opportunity to serve, share, pray and wor-ship. All there were reminded that they are “Women Under Construction”.

Plans are being made for next year’s retreat on April 20th and 21 st again at The Resort At Port Arrow-head. Watch the “Gem” and the MO FWB website for more details.

By J. Mark Vandivort

Much to our chagrin, Dale and I discovered that the concrete basement walls of our church building were two inches too narrow. Our church’s foundation was two inches short, in width, of the architect’s blue prints. We decided to continue building the frame, making the neces-sary adjustments to fi t our imperfect foundation. I advised the roof-truss company of the two-inch adjustment.

It was an exciting day when a large truck drove onto our lot and unloaded our newly manufactured trusses. We or-ganized a group of men to help lift the trusses into place. They didn’t fi t. After calling the truss company’s repre-sentative, he came to inspect and measure our church’s partially completed frame. Our work had progressed to the point of installing the roof trusses. He would send out another set of trusses, he said. After several weeks they arrived. And they didn’t fi t.

Our church had hired Dale, an experienced builder, to help us get our building framed and the roof installed. Then we planned to fi nish it ourselves, utilizing mostly volunteer labor. Dale and I were good friends and we worked well together—at least he was patient with me. He was teaching me as our building progressed.

We decided to lay out a pattern on the unfi nished, second-story fl oor and build our own roof trusses. Soon the lumber company’s truck delivered a load of two-by-sixes and two-by-fours. For several days we measured, sawed, and hammered nails. Our hand-made trusses fi t! And our church began standing tall.

At some time, you may unexpectedly be handed sur-prises that don’t match the blue-print you had carefully planned for your life. You may have to fi nd another way to get the job done.

The Apostle Paul had such an experience. While min-istering in Corinth (near Athens), he had a great long-ing for a face-to-face visit with a group of Christians in Thessalonica, a city in Macedonia. He and his associ-ates had recently started a church there, and he had an intense love for them. The Bible tells us that again and again Paul made plans to travel to see them but Satan hindered (1 Thessalonians 2:17-18). He found another way to get the job done by writing letters to them. Paul’s letters were hand carried by his associate, Timothy, who instructed and encouraged the believers. Two thousand years later, you can read those letters in the Bible.

Persecuted Mennonite Christians in Ethiopia also found another way to get the job done. Dr. Carl A. Moeller and David W. Hegg share an astonishing report in their book, The Privilege of Persecution. In 1982, the com-munists overthrew the government of Ethiopia. The Mennonite churches (and others) had their church buildings confi scated. They were forced to meet in secret. Ten years later the communist government was overthrown. Church leaders were amazed to learn that their 5,000 members had grown to 50,000 during that ten year period.

What can you do when faced with unplanned adjust-ments in your life‘s plans? The Bible is a wonderful source of true human experiences that can provide insight, hope and guidance.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart. And lean not upon your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge HimAnd He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5,6).

He can show you another way to get the job done

On May 1 of this year the Cuba Free Will Baptist Church celebrated 50 years of service to the com-munity with an all-day Jubilee. The day started with a prayer breakfast in the morning and worship service with the morning message being delivered by former pastor and long-time resident of Cuba, Rev. Ed Varney who now resides in Eldridge, MO. Music for the morn-ing service was provided by the Cuba FWB Church Choir.

The Jubilee continued in the afternoon with music per-formed by the church choir and Gary and Linda Spain. Pastor, Don Martin introduced guests and speakers which included Rex Pingleton, son of founding pas-tor Grover Pingleton; Rev. Ed Varney, former pastor; Rev. Ed Fields, former member and current pastor of First FWB Church of Rolla, MO; Rev. Jimmy Harrison, former member and current pastor of Bourbon FWB Church, Bourbon, MO; and Rev. Leroy Bryant, former member and current pastor of Oak Hill FWB Church, Union, MO.

Pastor Martin and the current Advisory Board members (Rev. Elmer Turnbough, Curtis Holt, Gary Spain, & Charles Vaughn) led the congregation in re-affi rming the church and congregation in service to God and Christian service to others. Rev. Elmer Turnbough led the church in a re-affi rmation prayer, followed by a reading of the FWB Church Covenant.

After a short break for cake and fellowship, John & Gina Jordan and their two sons, Heston & Zane, a family group from Edgar Springs, MO, provided special music. Long-time member, Helen Brown, was sur-prised when she was honored with a special award for almost 50 years of continuous membership, dedication and service to the church. Helen’s children (Dennis Brown, Gale Staples, Teresa Chew, Debbie Willough-by) sang a song, (Sorry, I Never Knew You), which had special meaning to their family and was performed dur-ing the very fi rst revival the church had in 1962.

Leroy & Peggy Bryant and other members from the Oak Hill Church performed special music which was followed by a sermon message given by Dr. Jay Tilson, pastor of Christ Chapel FWB Church, St. Clair, MO. The day’s activities ended with a fellowship meal supplied by the Cuba Church.

The Cuba FWB Church started out in the old theater building on Lawrence St. in Cuba in May of 1961. Very shortly thereafter the church purchased and moved into a church building located at the corner of W. Spencer & Hickory streets (current location of the Cuba Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry behind City Hall) and the fi rst revival was held across the street in the current location of Roberts-Judson Lumber Com-pany material yard. In 1970 the church built a parsonage and in 1981 the current church building. In 1996 the church pur-chased and currently owns approximately 9 acres of land on highway ZZ on the west edge of Cuba.

The church has been served by the following pas-tors throughout its 50 year history: Grover Pingleton 1961-1964, Edward Varney 1964-1966, Cliff Bowman 1966-1968, Cletus Nichols 1968-1972, Grover Pin-gleton 1972-1977, Danny Martin & Dale Pitts 1977-1981, Gordon Butler 1981-1984, Rick Dablemont 1984-2002, Mike Schultz 2003-2005, and Don Martin 2005-present.

H. B. London at H. B. London at Pastor’s RetreatPastor’s Retreat

Missouri Free Will Baptist pastors were privileged to recently have H. B. London speak at our annual Ministers retreat. Dr. London has recently retired as vice presi-dent of Church and Clergy for Focus on the Family. Pastors and their families all across the nation have benefi ted from his min-istry. We too benefi ted from the time we spent together. He has a heart for pastors and it shows.

Board of Trustees Board of Trustees Recommends Recommends FWBBC Name FWBBC Name ChangeChange

NASHVILLE, TN—During its May 4-5 meeting preceding commencement exercises, the Free Will Baptist Bible College Board of Trustees voted 8-1 to recommend that the college change its name to Welch College, according to Chairman Terry Pierce.

The name change proposal will be presented to del-egates for discussion at the 2011 national conven-tion in Charlotte, North Carolina, and will be voted on during the 2012 national convention in Memphis.

The vote to recommend a name change came one year after the Board authorized college offi cials to conduct a study to determine the feasibility of such a move.

This spring FWBBC surveyed nearly 10,000 con-stituents about the proposed change, and results indicate that alumni, donors, and other denomina-tional stakeholders strongly support the idea.

Meanwhile, college administrators continue to speak with pastors, churches, and focus groups about issues driving the name change—recruit-ment, graduate access to restricted-access coun-tries, alumni concerns, campus relocation, donor support, and more.
