    UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

    6

Dr. Mark Everett Keenum became Mississippi States 19th president Jan. 5, 2009, ollow

ing a distinguished public service career.

Despite di cult economic times, Dr. Keenum has guided Mississippi State to new

heights. His quick action to address budget shortalls put the university in position to meet

those challenges and maintain the highest level o academic excellence. The university

has experienced record enrollment growth, which includes students with the highest ACT

average o any university in our state. Increased enrollment has also spurred new construc

tion on campus, with two new residence halls completed and opened this August. The

Mize Pavilion, a stateotheart basketball practice acility, was dedicated in 2011. Plans in

the immediate uture include construction o another new residence hall, a new classroom

building and renovation o historic Lee Hall. The Leo W. Seal Jr. Football Complex will be

completed in early 2013, and bids were accepted this summer to expand Davis Wade Sta

dium, a project expected to be completed by August 2014.

Since 2009, undraising has reached alltime record levels. Giving by alumni and riends

has surpassed $290 million over that period, including the highly successul StatePride ini

tiative that is providing scholarships or students and support or MSU aculty.

Dr. Keenum has also been instrumental in expanding the MSU Promise Program, which

provides needbased scholarship assistance to Mississippi students whose amilies have

limited fnancial means. Through the Sonny Montgomery Center or Americas Veterans, he

has also led initiatives to make Mississippi State one o the most veteranriendly universi

    ties in the nation.

Mississippi State has strengthened its role as the agship research university in the state.

The Carnegie Foundation or the Advancement o Teaching classifed MSU as a university

with very high research activity, the only such designation in Mississippi. Dr. Keenum trav

els requently to Washington, D.C., meeting with Congressional leaders and ederal agency

heads to pursue research opportunities and broaden the universitys inuence on the na

tional level. He has also worked closely with the governor, lieutenant governor and Missis

sippi Legislature in support o higher education in our state.

A graduate o Mississippi State University with degrees in agricultural economics, Dr.

Keenum began his career at MSU as a aculty member with the Extension Service and the

Department o Agricultural Economics. He went on to serve as chie o sta to U.S. Senator

Thad Cochran in Washington, DC and was Under Secretary o the United States Department

o Agriculture prior to returning home to Mississippi State.

He graduated rom Corinth MS High School and earned an associate o arts degree

rom Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville and was a member o the

    Northeast Tigers ootball team.

Dr. Keenum is married to the ormer Rhonda Newman o Booneville, also an MSU gradu

    ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Using more than two decades o intercollegiate experience in communications, devel

opment and marketing, Scott Stricklin has built a wave o momentum within the Mississippi

State an base over during his tenure as the director o athletics.

From his frst day on the job as Mississippi States Athletic Director in May 2010, Strick

lin, integrating the departments three oundations o ocus on studentathletes, possess

ing great integrity and aggressively promoting Mississippi State University, has overseen

a stretch in which the Bulldogs enjoyed both on and o the feld successes unparalleled in

    more than a decade.

On the feld, the Bulldog ootball team has posted backtoback victories in postseason

bowls and has claimed threeconsecutive Egg Bowl wins. The mens tennis team claimed the

Southeastern Conerence Western Division title in both 2011 and 2012. Baseball reached

postseason each o the past two seasons with sotball advancing to the NCAAs in 2012.

Mississippi States men and women athletes fnished the 2011 all semester with an ag

gregate 3.01 grade point average, the highest single semester grade point average in school

history. Thirteen o MSUs 16 varsity sports surpassed the 3.00 grade point mark. Bulldog

studentathletes again excelled in the NCAAs Academic Progress Rate, with all 16 sports ar

    exceeding the minimum standard.

Stricklin has overseen record undraising or Bulldog Athletics, which has produced new

acilities such as the $11.7 million Mize Pavilion at Humphrey Coliseum, a new $20 million

ootball practice and training complex as well as uture expansion and upgrades to Davis

Wade Stadium. The Bulldog Club has solicited gits totaling more than $20 million or the

ootball acility, including a record $12 million git rom the Seal Family Foundation.

The Bulldog Club has initiated the most ambitious undraising drive in the athletic de

partments history an initiative called Today, Tomorrow, Forever to generate unding or

new construction and upgrades to existing acilities.

Supporters are responding at the turnstiles as well. In 2010, Mississippi State ans packed

Davis Wade Stadium or every game, buying all available season tickets or the frst time

in school history. Capacity crowds have become the norm as 16consecutive home games

have been sold out, and the school has created a waiting list that has topped 1,000 requests

    or season ticket purchases.

Stricklin certainly wasnt a stranger to the Bulldog amily or college athletics when he

took over the reins at State.

A 1992 graduate o Mississippi State, the Jackson, Miss., natives resume is highlighted

by 23 years o experience on the collegiate level in various capacities at fve dierent uni

versities. In the two years prior to becoming athletic director, he served as Senior Associ

ate Athletics Director or External Aairs at his alma mater, overseeing undraising, ootball

and mens basketball scheduling, managing MSUs allsport agreement with Adidas, acility

planning, and serving as the administrative sport liaison or mens basketball and sotball.

It was those ty pes o daytoday tasks that prepared the personable Stricklin to take over

the top seat in the Mississippi State athletic department.

Yet its a journey that started during his ormative days as a dedicated and tireless work

in the Mississippi State media relations department thats led to his highlyrespected c are

    coming ull circle.

Prior to graduating, Stricklins stint in the MSU media relations o ce included thr

seasons 199092 as the media contact or the nationallyrenown baseball program. Up

graduation, he was named assistant media relations director at his alma mater.

He continued his climb up the ladder o success when he was named Associate Med

Relations Director at Auburn, where he served rom 199398. In 1998, Stricklin let Aubu

to become Assistant Athletics Director at Tulane, where he served as the primary med

contact or the Green Waves 1998 120 ootball team. Next came a ouryear run in the B

12 Conerence at Baylor 19992003 as Assistant AD or Communications and Marketing

In 2003, Stricklin returned to the Southeastern Conerence at Kentucky and spent f

seasons as the Associate AD or Media Relations, where he oversaw the daytoday public

o the traditionrich Wildcat basketball program. It was his last stop beore returning to M

sissippi State in the spring o 2008.

Stricklin, 42, is married to the ormer Anne Howell, the youngest daughter o Basketb

Hall o Fame member Bailey Howell. The couple has two daughters, Abby and Sophie.
