MiSSiSSAUGA NATioNS CollABoRATioNOn February 19th, 2015 the Mississauga Nations met in Toronto at the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs office to discuss potential collaboration on key areas of partnership and involvement with the Pan/Parapan Am Games.

The six Mississauga Nations consist of Alderville First Nation, Hiawatha First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation, Mississauga #8 First Nation, Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation were unable to attend and sent regrets.

All Nations were given a brief history of the Games and an overview of the Protocol Agreement that was signed between the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (MNCFN) and the Toronto Organizing Committee for the 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games.

Discussions included but were not limited to the eight main areas that the Pan Am Games Secretariat (PAGS) are focused on and which include:

1. Torch Relay 2. Cultural Village3. Three Fires and Cauldron Ceremony 4. Gala at Fort York5. Community Celebration at MNCFN 6. MCNFN Participation at the Games7. Economic Opportunity8. Education Awareness

Other discussions included the Aboriginal Leadership Partners (ALP), the Aboriginal Pavilion, Volunteers, Funding, Sponsors and Marketing plans. The concept of a living legacy piece was shared and it was explained that the roundhouses from the Cultural Village are intended to be a permanent fixture of Fort York or some other prominent location in Toronto. The significance of this is that they will be used

to educate the public about the traditional lands and culture of the MNCFN.

The overall result of the meeting is that the Mississauga Nations are keenly interested in collaborating and participating in the Games with the MNCFN. It was the consensus that this is an exciting time. We have a grand opportunity to join together and work as one Nation to accomplish positive outcomes and an awareness about our rich history and culture. The Honourable David Zimmer, Minster of Aboriginal Affairs and The Honourable Michael Coteau, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport joined the Mississauga Nations during lunch to offer their support for MNCFN and the Nations, with the work associated with the Pan Am Games.

Minister Coteau took the opportunity to announce that Ontario will be putting

in a bid for the 2017 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) and that his Ministry would support the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation as Host First Nation to the NAIG Games if Toronto should win the bid.

Doug Devlin, CN Manager of Tribal Aboriginal Affairs, came forward after Minister Coteau completed his announcement and countered with a surprising statement that offered CN support for the 2017 NAIG. He announced

that CN was a major sponsor of the 2014 NAIG hosted in Regina, Saskachewan and that they would be pleased to support MNCFN as the Host First Nation of NAIG 2017 if it comes to Toronto.

On March 3rd, 2015 TO2015 unveiled the competition medals for the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games at the Royal Ontario Museum. The Royal Canadian Mint produced the medals using gold, silver and copper provided by Barrick Gold Corporation.

Toronto-based Barrick Gold Corp. sourced the metals for the medals from across the

Americas; the copper from its Zaldivar mine in Chile, silver from its Pueblo Viejo mine in the Dominican Republic and gold from its Hemlo mine right here in Ontario!

The medals design team included TO2015, the Royal Canadian Mint and Métis artist Christi Belcourt.

Belcourt is a Métis visual artist who combined her fine artistry and storytelling skills with the more contemporary techniques of the Mint and TO2015 brand elements.

The medals were inspired by the TO2015 motto “United we Play” and feature three spheres, which symbolize the Americas coming together.

Belcourt is a renowned award-winning artist in Canada.

Her art illustrates flowing water, considered by many indigenous people as the lifeblood of the Earth. Water represents the rivers, lakes and oceans within and surrounding the countries that make up the Pan American region. “Water unites us all as human beings,” Belcourt states, “Water also sustains and replenishes the bodies of the athletes as they train and compete.” Her work explores and celebrates the beauty of the natural world.

Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation: Traditional Territory

The Mississauga Indians of New Credit... were the original ownersof the territory embraced in the following description, namely commencing at Long Point on Lake Erie thence eastward along theshore of the Lake to the Niagara River. Then down the River toLake Ontario, then northward along the shore of the Lake to the River Rouge east of Toronto then up that river to the dividing ridge between Lakes Ontario and Simcoe then along the dividing ridges to the head waters of the River Thames then southward to Long Point the place of the beginning. As Host First Nation of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (MNCFN) looks forward with deep pride and enthusiasm to welcoming all to our traditional territory. The Games are

an opportunity to build an enduring legacy based on recognition and respect.

We and our sister Mississauga Nations take our role seriously. Our traditional territory forms a great arc encompassing the very

heart of Ontario and includes much of the Greater Toronto Area where so many of the Pan Am/Parapan Am venues are located.

We’re looking forward to showcasing our unique traditions and culture with the world.

To2015 YoUTh SUMMiT On March 21-22, 2015, up to 300 youth delegates from Ontario came

together in downtown Toronto for the two-day TO2015 Youth Summit.

The theme “Building community through sport and culture” was an

opportunity for youth aged 16-24 to be part of the upcoming Games by

learning first hand about the value of sport to community and the legacies

that an international multi-sport Games can leave a region.

Councillor Stacey Laforme, Chair of the PAGS Committee welcomed

the youth to the traditional territory of the Mississaugas by opening the

Summit along with Elder Peter Schuler. Jordan Jamieson attended as the

MNCFN Youth representative.
