Ward 10 project updates

Community CentreCity staff have issued a Request For Proposal (RFP) for consul-tant’s to make submissions related to the design and construc-tion of the community centre building at Park 459. Proposals are currently being reviewed by the evaluation team and the ar-chitect award is expected to be issued by the end of this month. At the same time, I am discussing with staff options regarding the naming of the building.

Tennis CourtsThe asphalt for the two new tennis courts at Churchill Meadows Community Common has been put in. The existing adjacent courts will receive a new top coat and all four courts will be re-lined this spring. Once the fence is installed, the courts will be available for public use and enjoyment.

Ninth Line ConstructionConstruction to widen and repave the section of Ninth Line north of Derry Road will begin later this spring. In May, crews will start by moving the street light poles further east to get them out of the way for the roadwork. A full road closure of Ninth Line between Derry Road and the CN Rail crossing is be-ing proposed for a portion of the summer, following the opening of Argentia Road at Ninth Line just north of the railroad tracks. Argentia will provide a detour route and the road closure will significantly shorten the construction time frame for the project. I will be reviewing this proposal with staff to determine if any other viable options exist to get the work done while keeping the road open.

Local park gets a name change

On March 30, Council unanimously approved my resolution to change the name of Marco Muzzo Memorial Woods and Park to Marco Muzzo Senior Memorial Woods and Park. Together with nearby residents and visitors of the park, I felt this change was necessary to avoid confusion between the elder Marco Muzzo, a builder, developer and wonderful man who contributed so much to the community, and his grandson of the same name who was recently convicted of drinking and driving causing four deaths and two serious injuries. The only cost to taxpayers will be the installation of new signs at the park, which will occur in a few month’s time.

More waste news: old bin pick-up

The Region will collect your old blue/grey box and green bin on designated collection dates starting in late April or early May. Specific collection dates will be announced in April.Alternatively you can drop off your old, empty bins for free at any Peel Community Recycling Centre (CRC). At the CRC, be sure to dispose of your bins and/or boxes in the bulky plastic bin – not the garbage bin. Please consider re-purposing your old green bin to store pet food, bird seed, sand or walkway salt. Please also consider re-purposing your old blue box or grey box to:• Hold recyclables before putting them in your recycling

cart.• Use as a yard waste container. A blue/grey box must be

clearly labelled with a yard waste sticker or “Yard Waste” clearly written in paint or permanent marker.

• Use as a storage container around your home or in your shed or garage.

Even more waste news: yard waste pick-up

In previous years, yard waste collection started in April and ran through to the end of November. This is the first year that yard waste collec-tion started in mid-March and will end in mid-December. Mississauga residents receive weekly yard waste collec-tion beginning March 14 to June 30, 2016, bi-weekly yard waste collection from July 4 to September 29, 2016 on their recycling week, and return to weekly collection on October 3 to December 15, 2016 Residents can go online to peelregion.ca/waste and enter their address to receive personalized information related to their collection schedule, download the calendar or add the schedule into their elec-tronic device.

Connecting people with similar interests

I am so pleased to support a new initiative of the Churchill Meadows Residents Association called “Neighbourhood Con-nections.” The vision is to enable and equip residents to start up and run activity-based groups within Churchill Meadows. These groups, called “Connection Groups,” run on a regular basis bringing people together to have fun while fostering new relationships. Currently, the CMRA has several groups that have either already launched or are about to get underway. There are Connection Groups centred around board games, book clubs, tennis, cooking, family soccer, running, and more!Whether you have a group that is meeting already or you would like to create a new one, the CMRA would love to chat with you about how it can help start or grow your group through its resources, connections, and experience. Find out more on April 18th as CMRA officially launches “Neighbourhood Connections” at its Annual General Meeting. For now, you can check out details on the current Connection Groups, or to see the guidelines for new groups, online at ChurchillMeadowsResidents.ca.

Cleaning up our parks this spring

A number of groups and clubs have scheduled litter clean up events in parks throughout Ward 10 this spring. That’s fantas-tic! When we all pitch in, we truly make a difference for our neighbourhoods, keeping them safe, clean and beautiful.• On April 16, the 3rd Meadowvale Scouts will be cleaning

up Rotary Park on Tacc Drive• The March 25th clean up of O’Connor Park, led by Muslim

Neighbour Nexus, was postponed and a new date will be announced soon.

• I know many schools are planning to clean up neighbour-ing city parks as well.

My annual Ward 10 clean up day is Saturday, May 7. We will clean up two areas this year: • Lisgar Meadowbrook Trail – 9:30 to 10:30 am • Marco Muzzo Senior Memorial Woods – 11 to noonSave the date now and plan to join us for the community activ-ity. Watch my May eNewsletter for more details.

Get a building permit for spring renos

Planning a new deck or other home renovation project this season? The City of Mississauga reminds residents that the Ontario Building Code requires building permits for a range of projects before construction can begin. Typically, the designer or contractor will obtain the build-ing permit. However, it is ultimately the homeowner’s respon-sibility to ensure that a building permit is obtained when re-quired and that the construction complies with all regulations and by-laws. City staff can guide homeowners through the process to ensure that construction and demolition projects in Mississauga meet the standards and requirements set out in the Ontario Building Code. Obtaining a building permit in the City is now easier and more convenient since the launch of ePlans, an innovative online electronic submission process. Customers can now submit building permit applications electronically 24/7 from anywhere using ePlans. For more information about building and renovating in the City of Mississauga, visit mississauga.ca/building.

Freedom Pass returns

Do you know someone who is 12 - 14 years old? If so, be sure to introduce them to the Freedom Pass, returning again this summer for a third year. The pass, good from July 1 to August 31, 2016, provides free travel on MiWay and free public swim-ming at both indoor and outdoor pools. Processing of passes begins May 1 at any City community centre; quantities are limited. To find out more, or fill out an application, visit http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/residents/freedompass.

City Centre terminal under construction

On April 11, construction will begin at the City Centre Transit Terminal for maintenance work. This will reroute bus stops from the terminal’s platforms in the bus loop to Rathburn Road potentially causing traffic delays in the area. MiWay buses will stop at bus bays along Rathburn Road. There will be no lane closures, however there may be increased bus traffic. The City Centre Transit Terminal was built in 1996. Maintenance work is required on the structural deck at the south end of the bus terminal due to concrete corrosion. This construction will begin April 11 and is expected to be completed by September 2016. During construction, the north and south doors of the City Centre Transit Terminal building will remain open to MiWay customers for ticket sales, customer information, washrooms, and travel to the upper platform. The east and west doors will be closed. MiWay bus routes that make stops at the City Centre Transit Terminal will be rerouted and stop locations will change during construction. Visit miway.ca for up-to-date route information.

Ward 10 resident featured at Art Gallery

The Art Gallery of Mississauga is holding a free public gath-ering called “Changemakers” on Thursday, April 7 from 6 to 9 pm featuring Ward 10 resident Eddy Robinson. An Anis-hanaabe Muskegowuk Cree of the Mississanabie Cree First Nation, Eddy is an active community member of our city and has spent 25 years working on the frontline of social services and advocating for Indigenous communities locally and nationally. He is noted artist, musician, educator, trainer and now speaker. The Art Gallery of Mississauga is located beside the Great Hall inside the Civic Centre (City Hall) at 300 City Centre Drive.

“Union Park” update

Construction has begun on a new park at the corner of Tenth Line and Aquitaine Drive. This park (P-519) is located in Ward 9 but borders Ward 10 and will no doubt be used by many residents from both wards. Situated on the former Union Gas site, Ward 9 Councillor Pat Saito has been refer-ring to the park as “Union Park.” It is expected an official name will be announced soon. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of this summer with a park opening ceremony to be held soon thereafter.

Stormwater billing begins

Residents in Mississauga will begin seeing a new stormwa-ter charge on their Region of Peel water bill starting this month. In Ward 10, many property owners will receive their quarterly water bill in mid- to late- April. The charge shows a daily rate dating back to the beginning of January 2016. Be-cause this time period is greater than three months, the first charge will be somewhat higher than the charge that appears on future bills, especially for bills arriving in May. If you have questions about stormwater billing, call the Region of Peel at 3-1-1. If you have questions about the stormwater charge in general, please visit: www.stormwatercharge.ca. You can also speak with City of Mississauga staff by calling 3-1-1.

Workshops on stormwater credits

Residents are invited to attend one of two stormwater residential program workshops on April 13, 2016. Session 1: 2:30-4:30 p.m. Session 2: 6:30-8:30 at the Living Arts Centre. The two-hour workshops are being held to collect input on potential options for programs that would recognize and en-courage stormwater best management practices on residen-tial properties. Please register in advance.

Council puts brakes on ride sharing

Did you know that ride sharing companies like URER are operating illegally in our city? Council passed a motion in March directing transportation network companies (TNCs) to suspend operations in Mississauga as the City’s Public Ve-hicle Advisory Committee (PVAC) continues a review of these companies currently operating illegally in Mississauga. Highlights of the motion include: • directing TNCs and drivers to suspend operation within

Mississauga until amendments to the Public Vehicle Licensing By-law are made;

• City staff continuing to enforce the Public Vehicle Licens-ing By-law and charge all drivers;

• Staff to report back on TNC related charges under the City’s Public Vehicle Licensing By-law;

• Federal and Provincial government be requested to undertake legislative changes to regulate TNCs to ensure that TNCs are regulated consistently across municipali-ties in Ontario;

• PVAC holds an open education session and makes its recommendations to Council.

Annual General Meetings for RAs

Steelheads play-off run

The Mississauga Steelheads are turn-ing heads this spring in their first round playoff match-up against the higher seeded Barrie Colts. The Steelheads turned a 3-0 third period deficit into a 6-3 win in Game 2, then won 4-3 in double overtime in Game 3 before dropping Game 4 by a 6-5 margin, also in overtime. The best-of-seven series stands at 2 wins a piece. The teams return to the Hershey Centre for Game 6 on Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets for their next home game can be purchased through the Hershey Centre box office or Ticketmaster: mississaugasteelheads.com. Let’s get out and support our team!

Bylaw Corner: Nuisance Signs

You, as a Mississauga resident, can be empowered by the City as a “Sign Ambassador” to remove illegal signs from public boulevards and traffic poles. Every year, especially in Spring, commercial and retail businesses contravene the City’s bylaws by placing signs on buildings, roadways, storefronts and sidewalks to advertise their location, products and services. These illegal signs clutter the city with visual pol-lution and also create a traffic safety hazard. City Council enacted the Pub-lic Nuisance By-law 0222-2008, to declare signs and advertising devices illegally placed on city road allowances as matters of public nuisances. Accord-ing to this By-law, residents can be del-egated the power to remove illegal nuisance signs within the City upon entering into an appropriate agreement with the City. If you are interested in participating in this program and helping to keep our community looking great, please e-mail or call me and I will put you in touch with the staff in the Sign Unit. Thanks for caring!

Support for victims

Victim Services of Peel is a not-for-profit, charitable orga-nization founded in 1986 through the collaborative efforts of Peel Regional Police, Region of Peel Social Services, the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services and the Social Planning Council of Peel. VSoP works to provide immediate assistance to people in crisis across Brampton and Mississauga who have been victimized by crime or tragic circumstances. Many are vic-tims of domestic abuse and other kinds of family violence. VSoP also provides critical response services for people who have experienced traumatic events such as sexual as-sault, homicide, suicide, sudden death, traffic/fire fatalities and armed robberies. Beyond providing immediate crisis intervention, VSoP offers healing through counselling and advocacy and hope through an array of services that empower people and prevent re-victimization through education and support. I am pleased to support this organization and its valu-able contribution to many suffering people in our commu-nity. VSoP is holding a fund-raising event – Chef’s Chal-lenge – on Thursday, April 28 in Mississauga. If you can join us, please visit their web site for more information: http://www.vsopchefchallenge.org/
