Recycling News Spring 2020

Waste Management has proudly partnered with the City of Mission Viejo to sponsor free quarterlyshredding events for Mission Viejo residents and business owners in 2020! Disposal of up to 10 banker-size file boxes (24” wide x 12” high) is permitted. Please ensure all documents and boxes are free of binders, paper clips, plastic sleeves and metal butterfly clips. Items not accepted include CDs, credit cards, three-ring binders, wire dividers, newspapers, magazines and spiral notebooks.

Mission Viejo Free Shred Event

Composting is nature’s way of recycling food and yard waste into a valuable and organic fertilizer for your garden. Nearly 20% of waste that ends up in landfills could be composted. Adding compost to your soil reduces watering needs, adds nutrients to the soil, eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers and keeps these harsh substances out of our storm drains and waterways. Best of all it’s free - made from your trash!

Composting uses a simple recipe:

1. Organic material: Greens (food scraps, yard trimmings, grass) and Browns (dry leaves, sawdust, straw, wood ashes, newspaper)2. Water: Add water occasionally to moisten the pile3. Air: Mix the pile every two weeks to add air to the pile

Locate Waste Management’s booth to sit in on a free composting class. Mission Viejo residents in attendance will receive discounts on Compost Bins and Worm Bins.

Compost GiveawayDon’t miss out! Waste Management will be dropping off free compost at the Mission Viejo Animal Shelter, located at 28095 Hillcrest, on Saturday, April 18th. Mission Viejo residents are welcome to bring their own bag and fill it up with fresh, healthy compost for their garden. Residents may stop by any time after 11:00 am, but please note compost will only be available while supplies last.

Free Bulky Item Pick-UpSpring Cleaning? Let us help! Mission Viejo residents may request three (3) free bulky item pick-ups per year. We will retrieve up to five (5) large items, such as furniture or appliances, or up to 20 bags of trash or yard waste (less than 50 pounds) for each request. Electronic waste, such as TVs, computers, monitors and DVDs, is also included in this program. Please call the Customer Service Center at (949) 642-1191 at least 48 hours in advance of your collection day to schedule a pick-up.

Waste Management observes the following holidays:

Residential collection service will be delayed one day following the above holidays. If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there will be no delay.

Senior Citizen DiscountWaste Management and the City of Mission Viejo are pleased to offer discounted rates of 20% for qualifying residential senior customers.

How do I qualify for the Senior Citizen Discount?• Must provide proof of 65 years of age or older• Must own or rent/lease the home• Must be responsible for payment of the waste bill

If you would like information on protecting your home from flooding and repairing damage, the City of Mission Viejo maintains many publications produced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These publications are available for review at the Mission Viejo Library or Public Works Department at City Hall. Contact Public Works at (949) 470-3040 or visit the City’s website by using the City’s GIS system and entering a specific property address or APN number for further information. Mission Viejo homeowners, renters and businesses are eligible to purchase flood insurance at a discount because of the City’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) administered by FEMA. For more information, contact your insurance agent or go to www.floodsmart.gov.
