Mission StatementThe Theriogenology Foundation is a global resource that supports education and research in reproductive medicine; ensuring that future generations of animals continue to enrich our lives through service, companionship, and food for a growing human population while conserving our natural resources.

I’ve been on the phone since May, 1957. Inheriting the gift of gab was easy; learning how to downregulate it to allow for thoughtful listening has taken decades.

In 2013, your Foundation initiated a call to the American Kennel Club. We listened to their concerns involving canine reproductive health and collaborated with them to establish theriogenology residencies in three colleges of veterinary medicine.

In 2016, the Theriogenology Foundation (TF) phone line became a conference call with both the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF). Listening resulted in the CHF plans to administer new theriogenology residency grants with four US veterinary schools: Auburn University, The Ohio State University, North Carolina State University and the University of Pennsylvania.

In addition to our combined support of education, TF has encouraged CHF awareness of canine reproductive diseases as a focus of research funding. Dr. Marco A. Coutinho da Silva of The Ohio State University will study the Role of E. Coli Biofilm in Canine Pyometra. Endometrial samples from clinical cases of pyometra procured from multiple collaborating private practitioners throughout the country will be evaluated. If successful, demonstration of the presence of biofilm in the endometrium of bitches affected by pyometra could lead to development of new therapeutics targeted at the disruption of biofilm, resulting in improved treatment for canine pyometra.

At the Minnesota Department of Health, Tory V. Whitten, MPH and Joni M. Scheftel, DVM, MPH, will study brucellosis in canine rescue and shelter populations. Results from this study, An Epidemiological Study of Brucella canis, will help determine prevalence and raise awareness of this disease, identify risk factors for canine brucellosis, create prevention and control measures and aim to develop a diagnostic PCR test.

“The new grants will have a direct impact on the health and treatment options for dogs with these life-threatening illnesses,” said Dr. Diane Brown, CHF’s chief executive officer. “CHF is proud to continue to build a diverse research portfolio that helps advance veterinary

medicine and biomedical science, furthering our understanding of both canine and human health.”

“We are proud to partner with the Theriogenology Foundation to continue our ongoing commitment to canine health research,” said Dennis Sprung, president and chief executive officer of the AKC.“ Helping to cultivate future veterinarians and health researchers is essential to the wellbeing of all dogs. We look forward to seeing their contributions to canine wellness.”

You choose how to giveTF Donor recognitionPlanned GivingPlanned Giving provides the opportunity to donate to the Foundation through your trust, will, and other assets as you choose, to leave a legacy for a cause you are passionate about. The “Plan-a Gift” section on the TF website is particularly helpful for guidance on gift options. There are giving options for all levels and numerous tools for choosing the gift that best suites your needs. An attorney’s counsel is also recommended.

Annual GivingYour yearly contribution can be used to sustain existing projects or spearhead new research to advance the science and practice of animal reproductive medicine. You determine your level of giving and direct your contribution towards education, research or achievement recognition. Every donation counts!

Honor GiftsHonor gifts serve as a meaningful way to recognize someone special while supporting the important work of the TF. Acknowledge the accomplishment of a friend or family member with an honor gift. Celebrate a special event, birthday or anniversary in the life of someone important to you. Make a tribute to an animal which has made an impact in the life of someone you know. A letter acknowledging your gift will be sent to the recipient.

Memorial GiftsA memorial gift can be made to recognize the loss of a beloved family member, friend or colleague. Memorial gifts pay tribute to the individual by affirming their passion for science, education and the continued advancement of knowledge in our specialty. The Foundation will notify a designated contact in writing to both acknowledge your donation and convey sympathy for their loss.

Corporate/Club GiftsCorporations and organizations may contribute to the Foundation’s general fund or may restrict their donation to champion a specific project or species.

Creative givingUse your creativity, motivation and commitment to launch a TF fundraising event through your hobby club, book club, sports team, office or service group. Share your personal achievements and passions for running, swimming, baking or biking by making it a fundraising event that includes friends and family.

Therio Raffle TicketsThe Annual Therio Raffle funds help support the TF and offers participants the opportunity to win a free registration to the next years’ Therio Conference, a three night hotel stay and event tickets. Only 100 tickets will be sold for $100 each. The drawing is held at the Therio Conference Awards Dinner, you do not have to be present to win. Available online anytime!

Kansas State Universityby Sara Elves

The Student Chapter for the Society of Theriogenology at Kansas State University is proud to announce that they hosted their first artificial insemination certification course in April with the guidance of their faculty advisor, Robert Larson, DVM, Ph.D., DACT, DACVPM, ACAN. A three day course was led by David Grieger, Ph.D. with assistance from Luís Mendonça, MS, DVM from our College of Agriculture. There were fifteen students representing our veterinary classes of 2019, 2018, and 2017 in attendance with interests ranging from production medicine to zoo cryopreservation.

The first day focused on estrus synchronization protocols in dairy cattle and comparisons across both dairy and beef industries. Hormones utilized to influence synchronization programs and timed artificial insemination were emphasized. Students were able to practice passing guns on dissected tracts before receiving an introduction to rectal palpation techniques after lecture. The second day involved more in-depth palpation practice and gun

passing on live cows with discussion topics on semen handling and proper loading of A.I. guns. The final day focused on emphasizing pharmacological choices and reviewing the previous days’ material. Beef cattle synchronization protocols were reviewed. Students were then tested on their ability to correctly handle semen, load A.I. guns, and successfully pass the cervix in live cows.

It was a wonderful event and the student chapter would like to thank the TF for their gracious funding and extend gratitude to Dr. Robert Larson for his unending support and to Dr. David Grieger for his time, enthusiasm, expertise, and humor.

Purdue UniversityDavid Pugh, DVM, MS, MAg, DACT, DACVN, & DACVM visited Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine on September 24, 2015. Dr. Pugh is the Director of the Alabama State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System and a clinical professor at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. His interests are in small ruminant and equid nutrition, parasite management and herd health.

On September 24th, Dr. Pugh provided two lectures to the members of the Student Chapter of the Society for Theriogenology and the Student Chapter of Food Animal Club. During the noon lecture, Dr. Pugh discussed nutritional requirements for small ruminant gestation. He also demonstrated the relationship between nutrition, vaccinations & parasites, reproductive management, and veterinary care. During the evening lecture Dr. Pugh discussed causes, diagnosis, and prevention of pregnancy loss in small ruminants. Members learned about the zoonotic potential and how to reduce the risk of transmitting these diseases. Dr. Pugh had the opportunity to interact with the students and faculty, tour the hospital and learn about the exciting things that are going on at Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The chapter wants to thank the Society for Theriogenology and the Foundation for their financial support and Dr. Pugh for visiting the chapter.

Partnerships for Learning

The Theriogenology Foundation is a global non-profit which believes that the preservation and reproduction of animals is essential to

human welfare. By engaging specialists in animal reproductive health and productivity, the TF formulates and implements solutions

to combat human and animal diseases which threaten food security and the social and economic health of the world’s population.

Through the efforts of the TF, students have the opportunity to travel and participate in educational programs through specialized

grants. Scientists have the resources to research and develop means of fighting disease to help the global economy develop healthier,

self-sustaining food production practices, and veterinary practitioners are able to assist clients with animal reproduction through

advances in theriogenology.

We are most grateful for your financial support of the Theriogenology Foundation, providing $129,625 during this 12 month period.

Every contribution made to the Theriogenology Foundation moves us toward our goal of expanding research and knowledge in the field of theriogenology. Continued contributions provide support of the Foundation’s goals in future years. The generous support of the Society for Theriogenology and the American College of Theriogenologists covers most of the costs related to operating the Foundation, so that almost 89% of funds expended went to directly support programs. Administrative costs (office supplies, accounting and board meetings) totaled 5.4% and fundraising expenses (brochures, planned giving, postage, credit card, website fees on donations) were 5.9%.

Your tax deductible support and philanthropic investment enables us to make a huge difference in the advancement of our specialty. There is no gift too great or too small, and the Foundation is continually adding new programs to offer you ways to donate that meet your specific needs, such as our Planned Giving options. Donating to the Theriogenology FoundationDid you know that there are several ways that you can make a donation to the Theriogenology Foundation that will not affect your current lifestyle, or will even pay you an income? You can leave benefits from a Retirement Account, Life Insurance policy, real estate or personal property (collectibles, art, books). Take advantage of the many creative ways to benefit yourself, your beneficiaries and the Theriogenology Foundation while saving tax dollars in the process. Please take a moment to explore the Planned Giving page on the Theriogenology Foundation’s website, http://therio.plannedgiving.org. There are worksheets available and additional information to help you consider all of the options.
