Compare status of women in the top 5 religions of the world Where does Sikh stand in comparison? What cultural and social norms did our Gurus challenge to tackle women's rights? Why?
Take aways: Our Gurus took on caste system, women were below the 4 castes; purdah, dowry, sati and remarriage of widow, education was allowed, preaching Sikhism was done by women/manji system. Not having to take on male's last name: KAUR-you belong to the Guru and no one else, not your father or your husband as eastern and western cultures ingrain in women.
Also mention: Just this month in the year 2015 the U.S. Defense Secretary announced woman can now serve in armed combat forces. Our Gurus were far more advanced than even America today is.
How did the above shape Mata Bhag Kaur to be a leader? Take aways- Martial arts- right of males and males that are Kashatriyas. Her family served the Gurus for
generations before her.

Lessons learned from 40 Muktey: What does Guru Gobind Singh teach you by tearing up the 'bedava'? Compare the homecoming of the 40 Muktey to the homecoming you see on TV of wounded soldiers in the
US. How was it different and why? How would you react if your father came home from war? What would you say to him when he tells you
the condition he faced for a long time: no food, trapped, etc. Mata Bhag Kaur's reaction to the 40 Muktey returning:
What did she say and what did she do? Was she rude or insensitive? What qualities did she have to possess in order to be ready to lead an army at a minute's notice? Activity: Ask volunteers to re-enact a scene when one of the soldiers were to return home. Discuss reality
vs Mata Bhag Kaur and 40 Muktey.
Tue
sday
Questions posed to class: If you could be the man or the woman of your dreams, what would you be and what qualities would you
possess? Everyone will write down their responses. What shapes your ideas of an ideal man or an ideal women? Are the ideals different for a man vs a woman?
Take aways: The ideal man or woman, for a Sikh, should be shaped by his/her spiritual connection with the Guru
Gurbani tukhs for what a beautiful woman (humans) are to the husband (the Guru). What are some double standards women face in the U.S. also living as Sikhs in our homes?
How are ways we can address them?
Have we advaced forward as Khalsa Panth than what Mata Bhag Kaur achieved back in 1705? Case in point: Where women present and represented at sarbat Khalsa Nov. 2015?
Introduce group activity that will go into Wed. Divide class into 3 groups by counting off 1, 2,3. Each group will be given a topic they will have to present in class on Wednesday. Three topics are:
Self-esteem and body image of women and how do we change it? Is the image you have from TV correct and realistic? What is reality and how should we change it?
The roles that men and women play in our homes: What do the roles look like for mom vs dad, sister vs brother? Are they equal? If so, how? If not, how do we make them equal?
Community support of women: Does our Gurdwara support woman? If so how? If not, what are solutions for spiritual and social equality?

Bibi Bhani Ji [19 January 1535 - 9 April
1598] was daughter of Guru Amardas Sahib, wife of Guru Ramdas Sahib and mother of Guru Arjan Sahib, was born to Mata Mansa Devi on 19th January 1535 at Basarke Gillan, a village near Amritsar. She was married on 18 February 1554 to Bhai Jetha (later Guru Ramdas Sahib), from Lahore, then in Goindval rendering voluntary service in the construction of the Baoli Sahib. After marriage, the couple remained in Goindval serving the Guru. From Goindval, Bhai Jetha was deputed by the Guru to go and establish a habitation (present-day Amritsar Sahib).
Three sons, Prith Chand (1558), Mahadev (1560) and (Guru) Arjan Sahib (1563) were born to her. A popular anecdote mentioned in old chronicles describes how devotedly Bibi Bhani Ji served her father. One morning, it is said, as Guru Amardaas Sahib was absorbed in meditation, Bibi Bhani Ji noticed that one of the legs of the low wooden seat on which the Guru sat was about to give way. She at once put forward her hand to support the stool. As the Guru ended his devotions, he discovered how her hand was bleeding from the injury it had sustained. He blessed her saying that her progeny would inherit the guruship. Bibi Bhani Ji died at Goindval on 9 April 1598. Bibi Bhani Ji was mother of Guru Arjan Sahib, the Fifth Guru. Guru Arjan Sahib was brought up as model GurSikh. Guru Arjan Sahib was the first Sikh Martyr. Guru Arjan Sahib compiled Adi Granth by collecting all the writings of gurus before him and installed it at Takht Sri Harmandar Sahib, Amritsar, which is now The Guru Granth Sahib.

Mata Khivi ji was born in 1506 to
Karan Devi and Bhai Devi Chand Khatri. She was married to Bhai Lehna Ji in 1519, when she was 13 years old. She had 4 children, Dasu, Bibi Amro, Bibi Anokhi and son Datu. When Bhai Lehna Ji became Guru Angad Sahib, second Guru of the Sikhs, life became very busy for her. People were now coming to her house to see their Guru. She took upon herself the onerous task of managing every detail of the langar. Only the best possible ingredients were used, and everyone was treated with utmost courtesy. Her hospitality has been emulated over the centuries and has become the first cultural identity of the Sikhs. She did much more than work in the
kitchen. She created a loving atmosphere for all whom she came in contact with. Mata Khivi, is the only lady whose name has been mentioned in Guru Granth Sahib. She has been highly praised in one of the hymns composed by Balwand and entered in Guru Granth Sahib at panna 967.
ਜ ਜ ॥ ॥ { 967}
Balwand says that Khivi, the Guru's wife, is a noble woman, who gives soothing, leafy shade to all. She distributes
the bounty of the Guru's Langar; the kheer – the rice pudding and ghee, is like sweet ambrosia. She lived for thirty years after her husband’s death. During these years she continued to serve the community. She had the distinction of meeting five Gurus. She breathed her last breath at Khadur in 1582 and the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Sahib, attended her cremation. In brief, she was a devoted, noble, religious and very wise lady. She will always be remembered for making the tradition of langar (community kitchen) everlasting. Every Sikh should be proud of her and acknowledge her important contribution.

Bibi Daler Kaur was a 17th century Sikh
woman who fought against the Mughals. She rallied 100 female Sikhs against Mughals and Hilly Kings.
Bibi Daler Kaur was entrusted to guard
Anandpur Sahib fort along with other Sikhs by Guru gobind Singh Sahib before leaving the fort based on promise of safe passage made by Mughals and Hilly Kings over Koran and Goddesses to settle the dispute.
Bibi Daler Kaur saw that her beloved Guru
and Khalsa had been betrayed and she prepared the Guru's daughters for battle. She stood up in front of all Singhanian and spoke with passion, "Khalsa ji, we have given our heads to our Guru at the amrit ceremony. We have lived for Truth, now the time has come to die for it. Khalsa ji, remember that we are all trained warriors and we will die fighting rather than be taken
as slaves. Khalsa ji, pick up your guns and get in position it's a good day to die BOLAY SO NIHAL_SAT SRI AKAL." The enemy soldiers thought that the fort was empty and were taken aback by the sudden rain of bullets. Within a few minutes, hundreds of dead enemy soldiers lay outside the fort. Seeing this, the remaining soldiers left their positions and ran for their lives.
Bibi Daler Kaur gathered all Singhanian together and spoke, "Khalsa ji, we have fought well, now we our time has come to
die. It is up to us to die with honor. Our Guru is always with his Sikhs and protects his sons and daughter's honor. Guru has trained us as warriors and we will die fighting alongside our husbands and brothers. Remember we are lionesses." Bibi Daler Kaur gave the signal and all Khalsa women drew their swords and positioned themselves behind the damaged wall. Mughal soldiers began climbing in over the piles of rubble. When they saw 100 Khalsa women and 10 Khalsa men ready for battle they stopped in their tracks. They were expecting to find hundreds of Khalsa men, they never knew women could be warriors.
Witnessing the events from a distance, Wajir Khan yelled, "Cowards, are you afraid of women? They are gifts for you,
capture them." Bibi Daler Kaur yelled back, "We are the hunters, not the hunted. Come forward and find out for yourself!" Wajir Khan took up the challenge and rode into the fort with his men. Khalsa Lionesses attacked them from every corner and he dropped to the ground. Not knowing how many other Khalsa warriors were in the fort the Moghuls retreated yet again. The very soldiers who were afraid for their lives started searching for wealth inside the fort. When they removed the piles of rubble from the fallen wall they found no wealth, they only found the bodies of our martyrs. The faces of Guru
Gobind Singh Sahib's daughters were still radiant yet peaceful.

Bibi Dr. Inderjeet Kaur (born January 25, 1942) , head of the Pingalwara organisation, is the daughter of Dr. Harbans Singh. She earned her Academic F.Sc. (Medical), in 1959 and her Professional M.B.B.S. from the Govt. Medical College of Patiala, Panjab, in 1967.
Pingalwara was the name given to a
humble house for the destitute in Amritsar Sahib in northern Indian state of Panjab. In the early 1900's, it was an original idea of the founder, Bhagat Puran Singh to catered for the people who had been rejected by society. It was an ad-hoc facility for the disabled; the mentally ill; the dispossessed; generally for people
who were no longer accepted by anyone in society. Bhagat Puran Singh built this institute literally single-handed with the ideals of his mother as his driving force; the message of Gurbani as a beckon and the generosity of the Panjabi society as his safety net and hunting ground.
Today, the Pingalwara complex is housed in a three story building near the main Amritsar bus stand. Currently Pingalwara has facilities for 400 "patients" who are fed, housed and looked after, thanks to generous support of various philanthropists. Since the death of its founder, Bhagat Puran Singh in 1992, it is headed by Bibi Dr. Inderjit Kaur. She expanded the charitable trust and opened a branch at Mannanwala near Amritsar.
She is a professional Member of the Indian Medical Association and has served as the Vice President of the 'All India Pingalwara Society of Amritsar, from 1988-1992 working with Bhagat Puran Singh. Upon the death of Bhagat Puran Singh she became the President of the Pingalwara Society in 1992.
On January 25, 2008, she was awarded with many honors, in recognition of her social service. In December 2008, she was honored by the National Commission of Minorities, for her grass root efforts to promote the rights of minorities and communal harmony in India.

Bhai Maha Singh is one of the martyrs
of Muktsar, collectively called Chali Muktey, the Forty Liberated Ones. He was the leader of 40 Muktey in the Battle of Muktsar or Battle of Khidrāne Dee Dhāb that took place on 29 December 1705, (29 Poh) following the siege of Anandpur Sahib. In 1704, Anandpur Sahib was under an extended siege by the allied forces of the Mughals and the hill chiefs. During the siege 40 men, led by Bhai Maha Singh, wrote letters of bedava (abandonment of a Sikh from his Guru) to Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, and returned to native village. They arrived in the village of Jhabal where warrior princess Mai Bhagoo, upon
hearing their tale of desertion, took upon leadership role and convinced them into returning to battle. The 40 Muktey with Mai Bhago returned to seek out Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, and joined him near Khidrāne Dee Dhāb preparing for battle against the Mughals. They fought, defeated the mughals and got martyred in the following battle. Guru Gobind Singh Sahib went across to visit the site of the battle, he asked to know his dying wish. Maha Singh humbly requested for the cancellation of the deed of renunciation he and some of his companions had signed before leaving Anandpur Sahib. The Guru immediately granted the request and tore up the piece of paper (bedava) that was still in his possession. Maha Singh died in peace with his head in the Guru's lap. The place was later renamed Muktsar Sahib, literally meaning The Pool of Liberation. 40 deserters became 40 liberated ones under ledership of Mai Bhagoo. Mai Bhago survived the battle and stayed on with Guru Gobind Singh Sahib as one of his bodyguards. The Mela Maghi is held at the holy city of Muktsar Sahib every year in memory of the forty Sikh martyrs. In memory of Bhai Maha Singh, College of Engineering is established in 2002 at Muktsar Sahib.

Giani Ditt Singh [1850-1901] – Giani Ditt
Singh was a scholar, poet and journalist. He was born on 21 April 1850 at Kalaur, a village in Patiala district of Panjab. His education took place in the village of Tior, in Ropar District, where he studied Gurmukhi, poetry, and Urdu. During his education, he moved from one center (dera) to another which abled him to have discussions with respected religious scholars. Giani Ditt Singh was one of the founding members of Singh Sabha Lahore. As an educator, he helped in the creation of Khalsa College, Amritsar and wrote textbooks for the students of the college. He was author of over 70 books and a major forum for his writing was the Khalsa Akhbar, in which he wrote on current issues.
Giani Ditt Singh wielded a powerful pen and was equally at home in prose as well in verse. He wrote many books and pamphlets on Sikh theology and history and on current problems. Well-known among his works are: Guru Nanak Prabodh, Guru Arjan Chariltar, Dambh Bidaran, Panth Prabodh, RajPrabodh, Mera ate Sadhu Dayanand da Sambad, Naqh SiAh Prabodh and Panth Sudhar Binai Pattar.
In late 1800s, Arya Samaj movement was on rise and their beliefs were at odds with the multi-cultural and multi-
religious world of the time in general and derogatory towards Sikh gurus in specific.
Giani ji planned to set things right. During a religious gathering in 1877 at Lahore, Giani ji visited Dayanand,
founder of Arya Samaj, "to know his mind and to know his ideals". He published these dialogues in his book Sadhu Daya Nand Naal Mera Sambad. During the course of the discussion, he takes issue with Dayanand's beliefs,
and attempts to expose the fallacies therein.
He also published accounts of the martyrdoms of Tara Singh of Van, Subeg Singh, Matab Singh Mirankotia , Taru
Singh and Bota Singh. These books are widely referenced in many Sikh history books written later. He died in Lahore on September 6, 1901.

Banda Singh Bahadar, the first Sikh General to wage an offensive war against the cruel Mughal rulers of India, thereby establishing the first Sikh State. He was born in 1670 at Rajori (western Kashmir) and known as Lachhman Dev and Lachhman Das in his childhood.
In his youth, he decided to be an ascetic
and adopted the name Madho Das. In 1708, he became a Sikh of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib and after his initiation into the Khalsa, he was given the name Banda Singh.
In 1708, at Nanded, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib sent Banda Singh to Panjab and advised him to put a stop to the cruelty
of Punjab rulers, punish the guilty and to fight for human rights, uplift and strengthen the poor, the low and slave like people who could not even imagine freedom.
During 1709-1710, Sikh army under leadership of Banda Singh Bahadar captured all the major cities of Panjab. The Sikh army captured city of Sirhind and killed the Governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan who was responsible for the martyrdom of the two youngest sons of Guru Gobind Singh at Sirhind. Among other reforms, Banda Singh Bahadar is known to have abolished the Zamindari system and gave the farmers proprietorship of their own land.
In March 1715, Banda Singh Bahadar was in the village of Gurdas Nangal, Gurdaspur, Panjab, when the
army under the rule of Samad Khan, the Mughal king of Delhi laid siege to the Sikh forces. The Sikhs fought and defended the small fort for eight months. On December 7, 1715 Banda Singh Bahadar along with starving Sikh soldiers was captured.
Banda Singh Bahadar was put in an iron cage and the captured Sikhs were chained. To terrorize the population and create immense fear, Mughals lead a procession towards Delhi with 780 Sikh prisoners, 2,000 Sikh heads hung on spears, and 700 cartloads of heads of slaughtered Sikhs. After 3 months of confinement, on June 9th, 1716, Banda Singh was martyred.

Bhai Nand Lal [1633-1713] – Bhai Nand Lal was a great scholar of Persian and was one of the fifty-two poets in the court of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He was born in Ghazni, Afghanistan in 1633. His father was Divan Chajju Ram, the Mir Munshi (chief secretary) of the Governor of Ghazni. He began composing poetry at the age of 12 under the nickname of ‘Goya’. He lost both of his parents at the age of 19 and thus moved out of Ghazni to Multan. There he married a girl with Sikh background who brought him closer to Gurbani.
As he heard more about Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, he made up his mind to go meet Guru ji in Anandpur Sahib, not realizing that he would never return from there. He spent his days with Guru ji contemplating and composing poetry. After Guru Gobind Singh Sahib passed away in 1708, Bhai Nand Lal returned to Multan, where he opened a school of higher education in Persian and Arabic. His two sons Lakhpat Rae and Lila Raam continued managing the school.
Bhai Nand Lal ji’s works are descriptive spoken account on Guru ji’s teachings and the Sikh way of life.
The Rehatnamas written by him are a dialogue between Guru Gobind Singh Sahib and him concerning the code of conduct of the Khalsa. His poetry in Persian is held in great reverence just like the compositions of Bhai Gurdas and can be sung along with the shabads in Guru Granth Sahib Sahib at Sikh congregations.
He wrote 10 pieces of work (7 in Persian, 3 in Panjabi). Some examples include, Zindginama, Divan-e-Goya, Ganjnama, Jot Bikas, Rahit Nama, Tankhah Nama, Dastur-ul-Insha, Arz-ul-Alfaz etc. .

Mata Bhag Kaur
Mata Bhag Kaur, (Mai Bhago) the sole survivor of the battle of Khidrana, i.e. Battle of Muktsar (29 December
1705), was a descendant of Pero Shah, the younger brother of Bhai Langah, who had become a Sikh during the
time of Guru Arjan Sahib. Born at her ancestral village of Jhabal in present-day Amritsar district of the Punjab,
she was married to Nidhan Singh of Patti. A staunch Sikh by birth and upbringing, she was distressed to hear in
1705 that some of the Sikhs of her neighborhood who had gone to Anandpur Sahib to fight for Guru Gobind
Singh Sahib had deserted him under adverse conditions.
Finding the men she persuaded them to find the Guru, to apologize for leaving Anandpur while it had been
under attack and seek his permission to be reinstated as Sikhs. She set off along with them and some other Sikhs
to find the Guru, who had been pursued by Mughal forces since leaving Anandpur Sahib. They caught up with
him in the area around Malva.
Mai Bhago and the men she was leading stopped near the dhab (pool) of Khidrana just as an imperial army was
about to attack the Guru. The 40 Sikhs who had asked the Guru for permission to leave Anandpur Sahib, had
been allowed to leave, but the Guru had asked them first to leave the Khalsa and disavowing him as their Guru.
Now fate gave them the chance to redeem themselves, never mind that even though they appeared as Sikhs,
they were no longer Khalsa, so despite the fact that they surely faced certain death, the 40 (chali) men along
with Mai Bhago, waded headlong into the Muslim forces (around 10,000 soldiers) and inflicted so much damage
that the Muslims were finally forced to give up their attack and retreat as darkness fell to lick their wounds in
the nearby woods.
The Guru had watched the battle from a nearby hill and with deadly accuracy had rained down a flurry of arrows
on the Mughal fighters during the attack. Seeing little activity among the party that had come to his aid he rode
to the battlefield.
He found that group was composed of the 40 men who he had asked to sign a paper disavowing him as their
Guru, all of them had died of their wounds except one, Bhai Maha Singh, who mortally wounded, had only the
time to look up at Guru Gobind Singh Sahib as he pulled him upright with his arms pulling him into his lap. It is
said that the note (bedava) the men had signed slipped out of the dying Sikh's clothing and was picked up by the
Guru who told Bhai Maha Singh that all was forgiven and tore the bedava.
Guru Gobind Singh Sahib blessed the 40 men as the 40 (chali) liberated ones (muktey) and that is still how the
men are known today; the 40 Liberated Ones the Chali Muktey. He took into his care Mai Bhago who had also
suffered injury in the battle. After recovering she thereafter stayed on with Guru Gobind Singh Sahib serving as
one of his bodyguards, in warrior attire. After the passing of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib at Nanded in 1708, she
retired down at Jinvara, 11 km from Bidar in Karnataka where, immersed in meditation, she lived to attain a ripe
old age.
Her hut in Jinvara has now been converted into Gurudwara Tap Asthan Mai Bhago. At Nanded, too, a hall within
the compound of Takht Sri Hazur Sahib marking the site of her residence is known as Bunga Mai Bhago.
