Page 4 Bless your Advent wreath at home

Make the sign of the cross as the leader says: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

Response (R/.) Who made heaven and earth. Then the Scripture, Isaiah 9: (lines 1-2 and 5-6) or Isaiah 63 (lines 16-17 & 19) or Isaiah 64 (lines 2-7) is read:

Reader: The Word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. With hands joined, the leader says: Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us sal-vation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

R/. Amen. The blessing may conclude with a verse from “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”: O come, desire of nations, bind in one the hearts of humankind; bid every sad division cease and be thyself our Prince of peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

ADVENT

The liturgical color for Advent is purple, just like Lent—as both are seasons that prepare us for great feast days. Also, Advent (like Lent) includes an element of penance in the sense of preparing, quieting and disciplin-ing our hearts for the full joy of Christmas.

This penitential dimension is expressed through the color purple, but also through the restrained manner of decorating the church and altar: "During Advent the floral decoration of the altar should be marked by a moderation suited to the character of this time of year, without expressing in anticipation the full joy of the Nativity of the Lord…[also] the use of the organ and other musical instruments should be marked by a [similar] modera-tion…" (GIRM n. 305 and n. 313)

The third Sunday of Advent is called "Gaudete" Sunday (coming from the first word of the Latin Entrance Antiphon for this day, meaning "Rejoice") and the liturgical col-or may be rose instead of purple. This is the Church's way of further heightening our expectation as we draw ever nearer the Solemnity of Christmas.

ADVENT WREATH AT HOME Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a circle of evergreen branches into which four candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent. Ideally, three candles are purple, and one is rose. The purple can-dles in particular symbolize the prayer, pen-ance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose can-dle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of re-joicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas. The progressive lighting of the candles sym-bolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead.

Mission San Jose a moment of History…

Roofing systems – Thatched roofs cont.… Smaller structures of thatched roofs would have a one-piece ridge beam while longer buildings would have a series of rafter units with ridged beams connecting them. Light raft-ers running from the wall top to the ridge beam supported the roofing between each raft-er unit. Horizontal poles fastened to these light rafters formed a framework to which the thatching was attached. Frequently a second set of horizontal poles would be lashed on top of the thatching to aid in securing it to the roof structure. Thatching consisted of bundles of grass or reeds. Principle joints in the roof structures were formed by fitted notches, peg-ging, or nails depending on available resources and expected lifetime of the building.
