TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Eliakim is destined by God to be a father to those who live in Jerusalem (Isaiah 22:19-23). Psalm — Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands (Psalm 138). Second Reading — How deep are the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! (Romans 11:33-36). Gospel — Jesus asked the disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Christ” (Matthew 16:13-20).

TRUST Keys hold great significance for those who carry them. They represent the trust and authority of the owner when given to another person. We may give our house key to a trusted friend to take care of our matters while we are away. We may give keys to someone responsible for maintaining or working in a particular building. Keys to vehicles are given to people who have proven themselves responsible drivers. The readings today focus on this kind of trust—the trust that conveys authority and responsibility. In the first reading, the symbol is specifically that of a key; but the second reading and the Gospel also speak of trust and leadership as they refer to the earthly church that Jesus established. PATIENCE Patience is the companion of wisdom. —St. Augustine

A Message from our Pastor

The Mission is recording Sunday Mass and posting to our website at https://www.missionsandiego.org and on our YouTube Channel. Please go to YouTube.com and join the Mission San Diego de Alcala channel. You will see our postings there.

Also providing Sunday Mass is Auxiliary Bishop Barron of Los Angeles. Use this link for those Masses. https://www.wordonfire.org/daily-mass/

SAINT MONICA (332-387) Feast Day - August 27 She had smiles for the neighbors, though her husband found her religion and the charity it inspired annoying. She made tearful prayers in private for a son, outwardly self-assured but, as his mother knew, inwardly restless, and whose girlfriend of a dozen years had borne his child out of wedlock. Though not the first or last such mother and son, Monica and Augustine are the Church’s most famous, so we keep their feast days back to back, with Monica’s, fittingly, first. To Rome she followed Augustine, then to Milan, where years of prayer—and nagging—finally bore fruit in his conversion by Saint Ambrose. For six months, mother and son enjoyed the blessing of rediscovering each other. Just in time! On the way home to North Africa, Monica took sick and died near Rome. No child who has mourned a parent can read, unmoved, Augustine’s tender account, in his Confessions, of Monica’s last days. At this time of the year, when parents watch apprehensively as children leave for school, may Monica’s perseverance and Augustine’s long-prayed-for conversion ease anxiety and kindle hope. Communion of the Sick or Homebound - During this period of COVID-19, many among us, especially the elderly and those with health issues are opting to not attend Mass. This has been difficult for those who desperately wish to receive Holy Communion. If you have someone at home who is unable to attend Mass, but who would like to receive Holy Communion, you may take Communion home to them. We will provide you with a PIX (a small vessel to transport the Eucha-rist). Bring the pix with you to Mass. At communion time, present the pix to the priest, Deacon or Eucharistic Minister, tell them how many consecrated hosts you need. They will place the Eucharist in the pix. Close the pix and put it in your pocket or purse. Then you receive Communion yourself, and then depart. It is important that you take Communion to the person IMMEDIATELY after Mass. Consecrated hosts are not permitted to be kept in the home. If you would like to arrange to receive a pix or have any ques-tions, contact the parish office. God bless you and your families, Fr. Peter

An additional Mass will be added to our Sunday Schedule

as of today, August 23.

Saturday, 5:30pm Sunday, 7:30 and 9:00am, 10:30am (Spanish)

and 5:30pm

All Masses are in the Mission Courtyard.

Make it a Habit. The first weekend of each month provide an opportunity to bring your donations of Food/ Diapers/ Formula /Paper goods for our monthly collection. We provide non-perishable food to our sister parish, Holy Family in Linda Vista. We also support needy expectant mothers and families with young children through Birthline. Birthline is always in need of infant formula. Paper goods benefit the Fraternity House that cares for HIV/AIDS patients. This month, all coins left in the collection basket as you leave Mass will benefit Religious Education Scholarships here at Mission San Diego. Thanks for your continuing support.

Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Volunteering, a good way to stay healthy and active. Mission San Diego has many opportunities. Best ones to start with are the Gift Shop and Docent Program. Call Rhonda (619.281.8449) or Janet (858.560.9312).

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive

You into my soul. Since I cannot at this

moment receive You sacramentally, come at least

spiritually into my heart. Lord, I know that You have always been there.

I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
