Here, we celebrate the numbers that make RMH BC and the families we serve so special.

Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon is founded on the idea of strength in numbers. Strength in a community rallying around a child’s health and well-being. Strength in the healing power of family. Strength in the number of donors and volunteers that make up our network of caring.

Report from the Chair and CEO

2014 brought a host of changes in our delivery of service, including the completion of two capital projects, a transition in our board leadership and a dramatic increase in the number of families served.

June was the milestone month for our organization as we bid farewell to our Angus Drive location and opened two much-needed

facilities: on June 2, we officially opened the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Surrey Memorial Hospital and on June 16 we hosted the grand opening celebration of the new, 73-room Ronald McDonald House BC.

After seven years of tremendous leadership and foresight, Peter Snell stepped down as Board Chair and assumed the Past Chair title.

Together, these centres of caring provided services to 1,332 families from across BC and the

Lower Mainland. That’s three times the number of families we have ever helped in one year.

Page 5: Mission - Ronald McDonald House Charities · Annual Report 2014/2015 73 3 in Numbers Stren gth Here, we celebrate the numbers that make RMH BC and the families we serve so special.

We are so grateful to Peter for the important role he played in building the new Ronald McDonald House and shaping the future of our organization. Alongside him, the entire Board of Directors carefully stewarded RMH BC through this tremendous year of change and growth, providing thoughtful and determined oversight to the opening of these two new facilities.

This year, like so many others, Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon benefits from the support and generosity of our community of families, volunteers, staff and donors. Our donors answered the lofty campaign call under the leadership of Gary Segal, contributing an incredible $31.2 million to support our capital campaign while maintaining and growing our annual fundraising needs to support daily operations.

Our volunteers rose to the occasion, providing support for our families at both the Family Room and the new House.

A most sincere thank you to our generous and compassionate donors and volunteers, helping us fulfill our mission by keeping families together to help them heal better together: for that’s the true strength in numbers.

Sincerely,

Jon Festinger, Q.C., Chair Richard Pass, CEO

Lives can change in an instant – one call from a doctor and parents are forced to leave their homes and travel to Vancouver for treatment for their child – gone for days, weeks or even months. Health and healing become more than abstract concepts – they become the foundation of a family’s existence. That’s where Ronald McDonald House comes in. We provide accommodation to families in need and ease some of the

other burdens they face, helping them cope socially, financially and emotionally.

Located on the grounds of BC Children’s Hospital, the House is a true centre of community and a cornerstone of RMH BC activities. Built to LEED Gold standards, the House provides indoor and outdoor play areas, a fitness centre, teen room, LEGO lounge and inviting common spaces to create a welcoming community atmosphere.

An extension of the House, the Ronald McDonald Family Room is a ‘home’ within the hospital for parents to rest and re-charge just steps away from their child’s bedside, keeping them close to support family-centred care for families with a seriously ill child.

Located within Surrey Memorial Hospital, BC’s first Ronald McDonald Family Room is a 2,000 square foot haven with four overnight sleep rooms, a kitchen, showers, lounge, laundry facilities, play spaces and a quiet area. Located outside the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the space provides parents with newborns a respite from the hospital setting.

Devin from PentictonDevin has been fighting cancer since early June 2014, and has stayed at RMH BC with his dad Gord, while his mom stays at home with his older brother. “The House is a great set up for him: he never gets bored and we spend time in between treatments playing basketball, ping pong, video games and pool.”
