ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN LOVE Flowers blooming and singing birds along with the brightness of the sun bring cheer to my heart. It seems as the earth has come alive. On my Sunday afternoon stroll through the park as I marveled at God’s creation, I was reminded of the great hymn How Great Thou Art (Second Stanza): When through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze; Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee; How great Thou art! One of the casualties of winter and early spring storms at my house is the wooden swing that I pur-chased last summer. Twice, it has needed to be up-righted after strong winds turned it over. When I purchased it, I decided to forego the cost of having it anchored in the ground. As I was thinking of shortcut solutions, my favorite bible verses came to mind, Ephesians 3:17-19.

Welcome to the community of United Methodist Women. May you reach out to others and provide love, care and concern in the name of Jesus. 1 Peter 2:9 says Y ou are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Wow what a challenge and blessing we have!

As we come together as community, we can do so much more than we can by ourselves. Your unit may be small, but together, great things can happen. Our group of ladies just had a rummage sale which we have been doing in the spring. Of course, our complete church provided many items which they no longer needed and it was a mountain of treasures that could be used by others. When our sale was over, we still had plenty to send to other organizations and for the mission truck to pick up. This is just one way of sharing our resources.

Come to Mission u at DePauw University in July and be educated in the mission work our organization does throughout the world. Bring your children and grandchildren and they will also learn about missions and have an opportunity to have fun at the same time.

Besides sharing our resources, we can share our talents. It has amazed me all the talents our United Methodist Women possess. Let your light shine! Sign one of the talent bank forms we have at our meetings throughout the year and be available to serve the Lord. Help others to know about our great organization and what has happened during the last almost 150 years. We have much to be proud of. Let your light shine!

Let’s Be LIMITLESS!

Hi, my name is Teah Aldred-Ash and I am the new Young Women’s Coordinator

for the Indiana Conference. I would like to cordially invite all young ladies ages

15-39 to come to our annual LIMITLESS Event. This year it will be held at beau-

tiful DePauw University from July 21-22. Activities will include a Hands- On

Mission Project, Spiritual Growth and Worship, Workshops on UMW History,

Ways to be Involved, Mentoring, Learning about Current Mission Areas of Focus,

as well as Crafts, Games and time for us to get to know other creative and bold

women from around the state. This year, we are collaborating with Mission u

Sampler Day to better connect with the established women of the UMW and take

part in one of the wonderful mission education they provide. We are also inviting

experienced ladies who are interested in being mentors to the next generation of

UMW to join us for the weekend. District Leadership makes the decision on men-

tors, so please let them know of your interest. Please go to http://www.inumc.org/

United Methodist Women will again be showing “radical hospitality” at the 2017 Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church on June 8-10. This is your chance to share a smile, a handshake, or a hug to all those United Methodist women and men who will be attending. Be bold!

As I sit here the day before Easter, I am humbled by the sacrifice made for me. It’s incomprehensible to imagine the pain of both our Father and His son. Yes, Jesus suffered and died a horrible death, but His Fa-ther suffered too. As a mother and grandmother, some of the hardest times of my life have been to see my children and grandchildren suffer or in pain. What an amazing gift of grace we have been given by the God of all creation! We must not squander that gift! Jesus has called us to go and make disciples in his name by our actions, our voice and by using the gifts He has entrusted to us.

We each have been given gifts and strengths to empower us to serve. Use them! Go! Bring women to Christ, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit those in prison, use what God has given you to be His hands and feet! Be bold! Personally invite women to join you in learning and serving. Encourage the women of your unit and district to get involved, attend gatherings and use their gifts to help the women, youth and children of the world. Speak up! Get up! Don’t be afraid! God is holding your hand and will not let go – where does our strength come from? It comes from our Lord!

To my fellow secretaries, continue to distribute flyers, publish important information and do what you can to keep our sisters ‘in the loop.’

Education and Interpretation Happy Spring to everyone! This is my favorite time of the year with trees budding, flowers blooming and grass is green again! God’s beauty is all around! I would like to review the Mission Today form requirements and share information about one of the “asterisked” items. There are 22 items to choose from with 9 of them having asterisks. The highest number needed is 16 items---which includes 6 asterisked for a Gold Honor. The Silver Honor requires 12 items in-cluding 6 asterisked. The Bronze Honor requires 8 items including 4 asterisked ones. I encourage all units to attempt to reach these goals. In the last newsletter, I shared thoughts on the asterisked item focused on implementing the Charter for Ra-cial Justice. I hope it helped units understand what they needed to do. This time, I want to discuss the aster-isked item requiring your unit to conduct one Mission u study during the year. You may choose any of the studies from last year’s Mission u (if you have your study before the current Mission u) or any of the studies featured in Mission u 2017! It is your choice to decide to do one program or an extended study. We realize that not all units have women who attend Mission u, but keep in mind that the district and conference officers are available to assist you as needed. JUST ASK! My hope is that we can have twice as many units reach at least bronze this year! You will be honored at your District Spring Meetings in 2018! Any questions you have feel free to contact me!

PROGRAM RESOURCES

Congratulations to all who completed the Reading Program for 2016. Many of you have had your spring recognition programs. I do encourage everyone to participate in the Reading Program for 2017. Remember, books from 2012 to 2017 can be read, including children and youth books. Keep in mind, we recognize the traditional plans, the Read to Me program (reading the recognized books to children) and One Church, One Book (one chosen book for a church group, Bible study, or reading club). Individuals might qualify for participation in more than one program. The fol-lowing districts have sent their reports for recognition of readers participating in the 2016 Reading Program: West, Central, South, and North.

There are two books I have read recently that I would like to recommend for individual or group reading. The first is Tilly: A Story of Hope and Resilience by Monique Gray Smith, a 2016 Spiritual Growth selection. The story is fic-tional but based on the life story of Monique Smith as a person with an aboriginal history from Canada. Some issues explored in her story are the challenges of those with aboriginal history in Canada (which parallel our history as well), poverty and continual mobility in families, and the development of alcohol and drug addiction. In telling her story in this way, the author creates an interesting read and one with warmth and hope.

Another choice is Extraordinary Grace, How the Unlikely Lineage of Jesus Reveals God’s Amazing Love by Gary Chapman and Chris Fabry, a 2017 Spiritual Growth selection. Examples of God’s grace and the meaning of it are explored through the Biblical stories of the lives of people in the lineage of Jesus: Abram/Abraham, Rahab, Tamar, David, Bathsheba, Solomon, Joseph and finally Jesus himself. There is a study guide at the end of the book with questions to explore each chapter making it an excellent resource for a Bible study or Sunday school class.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH

“See how the lilies of the field grow.” Matthew 7:28b

As I was walking our dogs recently, this scripture came to mind. Of course, the fields and

road sides are full of dandelions and violets. They are God’s flowers planted by the wind!

The dandelions are very bright and cheery and always some of the first flowers of spring.

They are a reminder of God’s love for all people.

The fruit trees are in bloom with the promise of a delicious harvest. The strawberries are

also beginning to bloom. While weeding them of dandelions, I was thinking about a bowl

of fresh berries ready to eat. Yum! God is so good!

Prayers that you are feeling spiritually renewed-- not only with spring arriving, but also

with attending a retreat and/or spending extra time reading and studying God’s word dur-

ing Lent.

GREETINGS FROM BE JUST BE GREEN

What’s your environmental pet peeve? What just drives you crazy when you think of the harm that’s being done to our world by the carelessness and/or greed of others?

I could go on and on with my pet peeves, but one of the biggest ones has to be single-use plastics. They usually can be recycled but often people don’t bother to do it – and the recycling process sometimes is harmful to the environ-ment anyway. There are things we can do to avoid single-use plastics – if you’ve checked out the Be Just Be Green Facebook page, you might have read some helpful articles.

Did you know that 500 million plastic straws are thrown away every day? EVERY DAY! That many straws would fill 27 school buses! And they all go to landfills. What if all of us avoided using plastic straws, as much as possible? It’s as simple as requesting “No straw, please!” in restaurants…..I keep a stainless steel straw in my purse in case I get a drink at a drive-through.

So, please join me, as we continue to act boldly and courageously for United Methodist Women!

I’m certain all nominating committees are searching for women to fill offices on their

leadership team.

Nominating committees must feel a little like Ezekiel calling out to dry bones – “Come

Alive”!

We are searching for women wanting to breathe in the breath of God. We are searching

for women to “Come Alive” to the mission work that needs to be done. WE are search-

ing for women who want to speak for those who have a quiet voice or no voice. We are

searching for women who know women who may be willing to serve and are willing to

encourage them.

Indiana Conference United Methodist Women are not dry bones. We are alive and

breathing in the breath of God and we want more women to Come Alive to serve every

woman, youth and child on this journey we call life.

Social Action One of the issues that United Methodist Women act on ALL the time is racial justice. When was the last time you read the Charter for Racial Justice? When was the last time you had a program centering on the Charter for Racial Justice?

The Charter for Racial Justice was created and adopted by the Women's Division (now United Methodist Women) of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries in 1978. In 1980 the division suc-cessfully recommended adoption of the charter by the whole denomination. General Conference has consecutively readopted it, every eight years since, most recently in 2008. The charter continues United Methodist Women's urgent call for study and action on the principles and goals of its vision.

You can also find a list of articles about racial justice in back issues of Response maga-zine. And there have been some good programs in some of the older yearly program books (if you are like me and file them away for years at a time!!) Does your pastor know about the Charter? have a copy of the Charter? What about the new members class – is the Charter included with the materials provided about the church? Do you include a copy for the confirmation class? Remember that this statement has been adopted by the entire denomination – not just United Methodist Women. FORTY YEARS! Isn’t it amazing to think that 40 years ago our Con-ferences of Indiana United Methodist Women had the foresight and courage to be on the cutting edge? They responded to God’s call to open their doors , providing a safe, clean, Christian environment where persons committed to rebuilding their lives from substance abuse could learn to live responsibly and independently. I am eternally grateful to those women who stepped out of the box and stepped up to the chal-lenge. And I am now grateful to you. It is because of you that we cele-brate 40 years of ministry at Lucille Raines Residence. Without your loving dedication, without your gifts and support, there would be no Lucille Raines Residence.

As a United Methodist Woman, this is your facility. Your ongoing prayers and financial support are important in order to continue this legacy of ministry and mission that began 40 years ago-a mission of changing hearts and lives. Please join us for our Anniversary Celebration. Details are in this newsletter. We also hope that each unit will do something special in recognition of this special Anniversary. We are very excited to have our 40th Anniversary cook-books available. The cookbook is an incredible collection of the best recipes from UMW members across the State, as well as Residents and friends. They are selling fast so be sure and pick up sev-eral at the Anniversary Celebration or at your District/Conference meetings. They make beautiful gifts!

On Wednesday, May 17th, at 3:30, we will celebrate the amazing life of our original Director, Eve-lyn Saffer, who passed away in March. We invite you to join us for our Anniversary Open House earlier in the day, and then stay for Evelyn’s Memorial Service. Evelyn wrote the original program for Lucille Raines Residence and she was involved in the operations of Raines up until her death. She will always be a part of the heart of Lucille Raines residence. Are you attending Annual Conference in June? If so, please consider having lunch at Lucille Raines Residence on Friday, June 9th. You can sign up online at the Conference website. Transportation is provided. You will enjoy a lovely lunch which includes dessert and beverage for only $15.00, and you will get to see the renovation that has taken place in the lobby, plus listen to a former or current resident. If time permits, we will be giving tours. What a great deal!

Our Flower and Patio Show booth was a great success again this year. We sold pins and cook-books, but most importantly, we got the opportunity to share the story of Lucille Raines Residence with men and women that we would not generally reach. Please continue to tell the stories of lives changed, families brought back together, and prayers answered.

Hey ladies, I have been getting quite a few phone calls on our "Hands On" project for Mission u. (YEA!)

So here it is! In keeping with one of our themes this year talking about our Missionary Conferences, we have de-cided to help Red Bird Mission. They have a great need for Christmas Shoe boxes this year.

We ask for COMPLETED plastic shoe boxes. These will be plastic boxes filled with items for 2-14 year olds. We do NOT want any items put into the boxes that are liquid or paste like items (no lotions, shampoos, toothpaste, etc).. There is a link to some suggested items on the Mission u information / registration form. These COMPLETED plastic shoe boxes need to be labeled with gender, age of child, and are NOT to be wrapped. This is so they can be trans-ferred to Red Bird without worrying about paper getting torn. The plastic shoe boxes make the children feel like they are receiving the same amount of gifts, and they stack easier for transport. This also allows Red Bird to store them much easier until Christmas distributions.

On your mark, get set, GO!

Go grab those clearance school supplies, toys, personal items, and novelty fun trinkets that will fit into a shoe box. If you and/or your unit prefer, we will also take monetary donations to give to Red Bird Mission to use where they need it to fulfill the needs of their children at Christmas.

Dear Sisters in United Methodist Women,

As we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, are you thinking of the many covenants Jesus and his Father gave to us? No? Well, those of us on your Mission u Team are thinking of the covenants, read-ing about some of them, and planning classes for Mission u around them!

Last June, we received a grant from the Bishop’s Christmas Offering in the amount of $1500 for the pur-pose of inclusion. As the funds were received so near to the time of Mission u, the Mission u Team decid-ed to save the money for this summer. Our goal is to be welcoming to children from racially/ethnically diverse backgrounds and/or children with special needs who might otherwise not attend this type of pro-gram.

This Inclusion Grant for the Children’s Mission Camp will cover 100% of the cost of registration, housing and activities for the child. Additional funding may be available for the parent/guardian accompanying the child. The parent/guardian is responsible for the child at mealtimes and when Chi-Mi-Ca is not in session. If the child does not speak English, the parent or guardian must attend the children’s sessions in order to translate for the child and leaders. Special needs children must be accompanied by a qualified caregiver. We want each child in the program to have a wonderful experience through learning, fellowship, friend-ship, and learning more about others in our world.

The Inclusion Grant scholarship form submission deadline is June 10th! Submit the completed application to our Conference Coordinator for Education & Interpretation by June 10th, 2017. Her contact information is at the bottom of the form.

Kathy Byerly and I were able to visit the DePauw campus a week ago and saw the new dining hall (Hoover Hall). We think you are going to be impressed and enjoy your meals there. We have walked around the construction traffic for several years, maybe grumbled a bit about the detours, and wanted it all to go away. It’s gone! There is a beautiful building with the dining hall and several classrooms. We will have some classes there, as well as some break-out sessions. Other classes and break-out sessions will be held in the Student Union Building where the Ballroom is located. The two buildings are about thirty feel apart! What convenience!

Remember our Study Leaders in your prayers as they complete reading assignments and plan for your time together. They will be attending training, provided by National Office, in the near future, too.

We are all looking forward to a great week of learning, sharing, and fellowship. Make certain your calen-dar is marked and your registration is submitted for the week of July 18-21 at DePauw University! The registration form is now on the web site and is live! Register early! We want to see YOU there!
