Food Packaging was a great success, and now…
Mission Circle urgently needs your help!
Mission Circle wishes to thank everyone who helped package 54,000 meals at the food packaging event last Sunday. You have really made a difference locally and globally--St. James-St. Leo has packed almost a half million meals over the years! Now we urgently need your help with paying for those meals! Mission Circle still owes FFCC $8,000 for the raw materials they provided. Please help by leaving a check to Mission Circle in the collection, or donate at missioncircle.com. Thank you!

Fr. Gerard’s Corner When we pray, are we directing our prayer outward, to God, or are we directing it inward, toward ourselves? Note that in Jesus’ parable, he says that the Pharisee said his prayer to himself. This could mean that he said it silently, but it could also indicate that he directed it to and for himself. After all, he is congratulating himself on his goodness. He does not even ask God for anything, for he does not realize he needs God for anything. The tax collector, on the other hand, pleads with God for mercy, beating his breast and bowing his head. Perhaps the lowly, the poor, and the oppressed of the first reading are better heard by God because they actually turn to God. They realize their neediness.
“The one who humbles oneself,” Jesus says, “will be exalted” (Luke 18:14). Perhaps this is because the humble person is not seeking exaltation in the first place. Those who seek exaltation will never find it. Jesus, on the other hand, humbled himself to take on our humanity, then humbled himself further in dying on the cross. Through these most humbling acts, he became exalted above all others.
How can we emulate God? We can reach out in love and charity to those who are needier than we are. They are crying out in their need. We trust that God hears them, but we must try to hear them as well. Rather than turning away or wringing our hands in despair, we can look to see what we can do to help. Using Paul as a model, we can pour ourselves out like a libation, sacrificing our resources to fill others’ needs.

We are so grateful for the generosity of our parishioners and community businesses, who all contribute to the success of the Mission Circle peanut butter and jelly sandwich program.
Every week our volunteers collect bread donations from our local Vons stores in Solana Beach and Del Mar, Jersey Mike's in Solana Beach, and Lazy Acres in Encinitas. Please show your appreciation by supporting these businesses and thanking them for their generosity, which makes such a difference in the lives of homeless families and prisoners in Tijuana.
The Mission Circle program comes together every Thursday at St. Leo's to make over 1,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to help feed those in need.
Our greatest need is peanut butter and toiletries. Please put your donations in the social room.

¿Cómo podemos emular a Dios?

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as
well as formation to ministry in the training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org

All Souls Day Novena All Souls Day commemorates all those who have died and who, we pray, may one day join the saints around the great banquet table of the Lamb. We pray for the dead. We pray for the forgiveness of their sins, and we pray that God in his great mercy, will take them to himself. In November, we will have a Novena of Masses (November 2nd—10th) to remember our loved ones. All Souls Day envelope are available in your packets, if you receive envelopes or, at the Church Entrance. Return the envelope to the parish office before Monday, October 28th.
