Mission Statement

Holy Love Evangelical Lutheran Church is

committed to proclaiming and living the Good News

of God's love in Jesus Christ as we gather for worship and study and scatter for witness and service to our

neighbors.

People of God at Holy Love,

Maybe it's the same for you as it is for me in the summertime? Every spring I think to myself, 'I wanna do these things during the summer', thinking to myself that I'll have plenty of time to work my way through that list.

And then, almost every year, I find myself with consistently less time than I expect to have. Maybe it's my own poor planning, or maybe it's true that we in our society just continue to be busy no matter what. But every year I keep thinking that the schedule will change, and so I'll get to have some down time. And every year I seem to find myself just as busy as ever.

The thing is, though, that it's a completely different kind of busy from other times of the year. For instance, as I write this, I'm sitting in a lodge at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, carving out time to write in between bible studies and games and hiking trips and group bonding exercises and singing songs and all the rest. Last week we had Day Camp at Holy Love, which was a completely different kind of busy as well (especially for Jennifer and all of her staff). In a few weeks, I'll be at a week of continuing education with some other pastors, where we'll be exploring some effective ways for corporate practices to infuse church leadership in healthy ways. It's a completely different kind of busy.

The thing is, I want everything to be ideal ... the perfect balance of busy and free, the perfect balance of active and sedentary, the perfect balance. But I never find it.

What I do find, though, when I look closely and pay attention well enough, is little pieces of down time in the midst of being occupied. And, during those (rare enough) weeks when there's not much to do, if I look in the right places I can find healthy and productive ways to occupy myself.

Because the truth is that it'll never be perfect ... in fact, it'd probably be best if we just give up on that idea. See, if we're always looking for perfection, we'll miss the imperfect gifts that are right in front of us ... a few free moments before dinner to talk with a confirmation camper; a high-five from that middle school helper at day camp; the life-giving conversation over dinner that'll percolate for weeks or months before seeping its way into daily ministry at Holy Love in ways that I don't even notice.

But isn't that the way that God's grace and mercy show up in the world?

I don't know if you've noticed, but the world isn't perfect. I believe that God is making all things new, and that God is creating a new heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21). But in the meantime, before the renewal of all things, oru world isn't perfect.

And still, God's grace sneaks into our lives in small ways, which we notice if we pay close attention.

So, how about this: I want to invite you to pay close attention, and to notice where God shows up in the world, especially when God shows up in surprising places. Then, sometime in the fall, we'll figure out how to share those with each other.

Thank you for your commitment to our minsitry together here at Holy Love, and thank you for allowing me to be your pastor.

Hi Holy Love Family, I am writing to you all from a lovely coffee house in Denver! Thinking about all the great things that have happened this summer, and the even more exciting events that I am planning this fall, I thought it would be nice if I wrote you all a note to update you with everything. The summer is off to a great start! Day Camp ran smoothly with over 100 Children and Youth running around our hallways. We had a lot of donations and the best volunteers to help us during the week! I thank everyone that helped in any way! I also had a wonderful opportunity to join a few of our youth at the Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp Confirmation week. Traveling up the mountain and enjoying the sunshine for a week is a wonderful way to reflect and talk about God’s call for us in the world. As for the rest of the summer, I am taking the month of July to reflect, plan and gear up for all the upcoming ministry opportunities that we will be starting in August. I plan on spending some time in July collecting feedback on what families are looking for in their household to keep growing in Word and faith. Starting this fall we have a few new Education opportunities that I am excited to share with you. First, I will be leading an Adult Ed-ucation time in September to chat about resources, home devotionals, prayers and more that all households can use. This will be in connection with our Sunday School classes. We are also creat-ing a place for all the High Schoolers out there to dig deeper into their faith through service, com-munity time and conversations. With all the plans I have for this next year, and new groups starting, they need your loving and caring hearts to run smoothly. This August I will be posting an updated list with volunteer opportunities for this coming year. Each opportunity will have a detailed de-scriptions of what that volunteer will be doing and a space to sign up for more information. I would love to see how we can plug in everyone to create a cross generational ministry here at Holy Love. Keep an eye out for all the upcoming opportunities to plug into. I am looking forward to digging deep-er with all of you on how we can keep serving and

growing with each other cross generationally here at Holy Love. Blessings, Jenifer Pulscher Faith Formation Director

Worship Assistants Sign-Up Sign up to help in Worship! Go to the Holy Love’s website under Worship for a direct link. For questions or more information contact Debbie Anderson, Keely or Jennifer.

Confirmation Class Confirmation will be gathering soon! If your youth is in 6th – 8th grade keep a look out and join us in August for a parent information meeting. We will go over the upcoming schedule with all the fun and learning that will be

happening this year! New and current families should plan on being at this meeting. Please con-tact Jennifer at [email protected] if you have any questions.

High School Time ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS! Jennifer needs your input on bringing you all together this fall. Jennifer will be putting together a calendar with service opportunities and community fun! Please join her at Starbucks on Smoky Hill and Chambers on Sunday August 14th at 3pm to connect and plan out a fun energetic year! See you all there!

Christmas in

July Food Drive No, it is not Christmas already but we can still

buy gifts for our neighbors in need. A Holy Love tradition is to donate non-perishable foods to our church food pantry and also the pantry at Aurora Interfaith.

Every Sunday in July, we will be giving out empty grocery bag(s) and all you have to do is fill the bag and return it to the church by the end on July. Get your children involved, encourage them to help shop for a child their age or maybe for a Grandma or Grandpa.

LET'S GET IN THE GIVING SPIRIT AGAIN THIS SUMMER!

YOUR GIFTS CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY

Book Reviews Holy Love Library

The Zippered Heart - Marilyn Meberg - M - Faith Development A book that requires us to look at the dark and light side of ourselves, the author writes in a “colorful literary, amazing, outrageous, revealing, delightful” style that will cause us to “look inside the recesses of our hearts and sift out the plunder and pretense that makes us fall short of being our best.” “Why did I say that? Why did I do that? Where on earth did those mean thoughts and motivations come from? I'm so glad no one can read my mind." We all get whiplashed and sometimes broadsided by the "dark" side of our nature, which produces thoughts and behaviors that cause us to feel ashamed. many of us deny that part of ourselves, and kick it off somewhere in the shadowy recesses of the heart, where we hope it will stay put, not cause us any more trouble, and hopefully not be noticed. Love the chapter names: Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire!, You’re Really Tickin’ Me Off!, Just Get Over It, to name a few. Choices - John Parisi - P - Adult Fiction What are the consequences of our choices? This fictional book is about two brothers who question their choices as they mature into their teens, while peer pressure, parental influences and desire for acceptance cause them to question their choices. Is life about creativity and imagination or money and materialism? The boys are forced to reconsider everything in the midst of their most formative and challenging years. How do they turn out? Is one right and the other wrong? What are the consequences of their choices? Is ether of them happy or not? In the end only you can decide. Where Miracles Happen - True Stories of Heavenly Encounters - Joan Wester Anderson A - Faith Development In our highly scientific age, even the possibility that modern-day miracles might occur is often cast to the

side of the rational road. But to those individuals who have actually experienced amazing, supernatural occurrences first-hand, modern-day miracles are just as real as the air we breathe. Where Miracles Happen contains 45 stories of miraculous events and angelic encounters. From physical healing to bodily protection to divine guidance and provision, each story is firmly grounded in orthodox Christian beliefs and reminds each of us that God continues to make Himself known to us through modern-day miracles. The author explores the question of miracles with experiences that show miracles happen all the time - - whether tiny, uplifting occurrences or ones that nearly knock us off our feet. Wouldn’t it be interesting to share our own miracles with each other and find how amazingly prevelent they are....?? “In short, unadorned stories, author Joan Webster Anderson retells fresh accounts of modern miracles. She emphasizes that miracles most often happen in partnership with a loving, attentive God; and her prevailing message of hope is irresistible.”

SCHOOL NEWS

By Mary Stephenson, Director

Summer Activity Program week #1 kicked off with 26 registered and 23 in attendance! Whew! That is a lot of children for our very first week, but all had a great time. Our June themes were “Growing Gar-den,” “Track and Field” and “Construction.”

Week 1 the children planted a variety of flower seeds some of which they could take home and re-plant while others were planted in the large pots on the playground. We had an Olympic theme includ-ing a torch run for the second week. Each made their own flag and medal and received it during the closing ceremonies. The children made a class-contributed Friendship Granola for snack. And con-struction week was all about buildings and building things. I think everyone—staff and children—had a great month of summer activity fun! Of course, each Wednesday was water day which was always a big hit! Staff helping the month of June was Ve-ronica Edmiston, Melissa Meacham, Letha Fink-house, Tricia Dingess, Trish Hollenga and Janice Grau. Tricia is Mrs. Carroll’s daughter and she will be joining our staff this fall.

July Summer Activity Program is filling up. We have some availability, but if you or someone you know is interested in participating one or more weeks, please call the office at 303-693-8519.

We continue to receive calls for fall enrollment and availability. Although some classes are full with a waiting list, we try to accommodate as best we can enrolling in other groups. It is an exciting problem to have—waiting lists!

At this time of year, we in the office look ahead to back-to-school mailings, class lists, school calendar and many other things to complete before school starts. Never a dull moment around here, that’s for sure!

Summer is such a perfect time to spend outdoors, take early morning walks, enjoy the pools or what-ever your heart and mind desire. (Note I said ‘early morning walks’ because of the heat.) What a spe-cial time to share with your child just enjoying God’s beauty. So many little bugs to watch, sounds

to hear and sights to see. Soon fresh fruit/vegetables will be ready for picking so there will be an opportunity to taste, too. Enjoy this time as life moves much too fast!

July 4th is just around the corner. Celebrating this day has always been so special to me. As a child my parents always instilled in me the pride one should have for the country we live in. Be proud to hang your flag. Be proud to say you are America strong. Be proud of who you are and above all show re-spect to all who have or currently serve in the mili-tary. What has been happening in our neighboring states lately is very disheartening. We can only ask God to continue to wrap His arms around us and stand strong in our faith. He is always in control!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

HAPPY JULY 4TH!

BLESSINGS TO ALL!

Because of You by Roger Collins, treasurer

The Dirty Laundry—A Story About Judging Others:

A young couple moved into a new neighborhood. The next morning while they were eating breakfast, the young woman saw her neighbor hanging the wash outside. “That laundry is not very clean; she doesn’t know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap?” Her husband looked on, remaining silent. Each time her neighbor hung her washing out to dry, the young woman made the same comments. A month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband, “Look she’s finally learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this?” The husband replied, “I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows.” And so it is with life…What we see when watching others de-pends on the clarity of the window through which we look. So don’t be too quick to judge others, especially if your perspective of life is clouded by jealousy, negativity or unfulfilled desires.

The bible reminds us not to judge others and yet sometimes we as Christians have a tendency to judge without knowing all of the facts. By giving you facts monthly of our financial situation, I try to kept you up-dated as to where we are financially, since that is part of my responsibility as treasurer of Holy Love. How-ever, I wish to remind everyone that the art of sharing begins with you and does not only mean the sharing of finances but includes the sharing of your time and talents. Thank you Holy Love family for helping us financially and for all of the wonderful ways that you share your time and talents for the betterment of all. THANK YOU for making our church a wonderful home away from home, a place where we can enjoy and communicate with God as a total complete church family.

Remember this prayer: “The eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us

with good things at your table, so that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our

Redeemer and Lord. Amen.”

Stewardship in July

What? Stewardship in July? Isn't stewardship something we just talk about in October culminating in com-mitment Sunday in November? When we think of stewardship – the giving of our time, talents and posses-sions, it is easy to see that it is something that continues throughout the year.

This year our stewardship theme is Living Generously – but what does this mean for Holy Love? The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) of which our congregation is a part has 10 stewardship principles. This month we will highlight five:

1-Respond gratefully to what God has first given us. All that we do is a response to God’s grace. Everything that we are, have, and use comes from God.

2-Give willingly as moved by the Holy Spirit. We have been prepared to give of ourselves. We give our time, talents & resources freely.

3-Share abundantly as we have received. The purpose of these gifts is for the good of the

community of God. We use and share our gifts for the benefit of all.

4-Contribute regularly. This means practicing our stewardship on a daily basis.

5-Live genuinely. Put your faith into action. This is the tangible demonstration of what is sincerely in our hearts and where our treasure is, not simply a verbal expression.

We all have a gift to give – let our faith become our lifestyle in all that we do.
