Adam Brand coming to SconeCountry music legend Adam Brand is coming to the Belmore Hotel in Scone on April 27 as part of his 20 year anniversary tour. He caught up with Up Country Entertainer ahead of what promises to be a great gig.

How signifi cant is it for you to be celebrating this milestone? I still can’t get my head around the fact that I have been able to do what I love – make music, entertain people and share stories for 20 years! I have been so blessed in my career and feel incredibly lucky to still be standing here doing what I love. I have the fans and the people who have stuck by me along the way, to thank for that. Sometimes words are just not enough!

You must have a lot of great memories from 20 years on the road, what are some of the highlights? The lyrics to my latest single “Milestones” (out Friday 20th April) pretty much sums up my memories from the past 20 years.

“Every corner of this house is a Milestone….” Everywhere I have been and every one I have met on my journey om the road over the past 20 years are part of this “Milestone”. I have been fortunate to visit so many incredible places right across Australia, but there are still so many I am yet to see. That’s what this tour is all about – going back to those places that are near and dear to me, but also creating new memories in places I haven’t been before.

Which of your songs are your favourite to play live? I love the songs with stories or messages that everyone can relate to to that I love to play LIVE. Seeing people share a smile over one of my songs that means something to them is what I love to see. “The ANZAC” is a song that gets a reaction wherever I play it…again, as it means so much to so many people. It will mean a lot when I play at the Belmore Hotel too just after ANZAC Day.

Have you done gigs in Scone before? What were they like? No, this is my fi rst time to Scone. I’ve heard great things about the Belmore Hotel, can’t wait to play there!

What kind of gig can people expect when you take the stage in Scone? The gig will be lot’s of fun! It will be a mix of all my greatest hits from the past 20 years. We will be partying with the locals, at the local, like the locals!

The latest International Visitor Survey, found in the year to December 2017, communities across rural and regional NSW welcomed 852,500 international visitors who stayed 14.7 million nights and spent $1.05 billion, delivering a tourism bonanza for local restaurants, hotels and tourism attractions. Visitor numbers grew by 11 per cent and their dollar spend grew by 19 per cent.

Bit of Italy in Broke

You could have been forgiven for thinking Europe had come to the Hunter when A Little Bit of Italy festival took place in the Broke Fordwich region recently. Owners, winemakers and grape-growers of the 11 cellar doors of Broke celebrated “A Little Bit of Italy in Broke” with workshops, dinners, food, wine, music, olive picking and so much more making for a fantastic weekend of fun.

Spotlight on the HunterTourism representatives from the Greater Hunter gathered in Brisbane recently to showcase the region at major international aviation conference, Routes Asia. Attended by over 800 airline, airport and tourism delegates from 100 countries, Routes Asia is a key route development event aimed at securing new international fl ights to grow our tourism industry.

Newcastle Airport, in partnership with Newcastle City Council, Destination Port Stephens and Hunter Valley Wine & Tourism Association, attended the event with the mutual purpose to position the Greater Hunter as a signifi cant tourism destination.

Brian Russell – a true thoroughbred historianOne of the Upper Hunter’s foremost experts on thoroughbred racing and breeding and awards recipient for services to the industry from both the NSW Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association and Hunter Valley Breeders Association has announced he is stepping back from the industry. Brian Russell (pictured) has spent the last 55 years reviewing as a professional journalist the mysteries of breeding thoroughbreds. Mr Russell was born in Trundle in Western New South Wales some 88 years ago to a wheat and sheep growing family.

He was introduced to hacks and plough horses on the family farm and his love of racing grew from that and listening to races on a primitive family radio. After seven years producing the thoroughbred section for Country Life, he spent ten years as bloodstock editor of Racetrack, a monthly magazine now also gone into retirement.

Stricken in 1972 by an illness that left him permanently disabled, Brian, his wife Deidree and their then young son Ian (who now writes race form guides in Sydney) in 1978 moved into semi-retirement at Scone, a town at which he contributed breeding news to their local newspaper.

Mr Russell also led the way in the establishing of the annual Scone Horse Festival. Now living at Muswellbrook and coming up to his 88th year and in declining health, Brian has ceased publication of Blood On The Track and the Australian Thoroughbred has gone into hibernation, until at least mid-year.

His plans for the future are, after a good spell, to research and write some history on Australian sires of last century and review the current sires. He will continue to contribute an article each month to Bluebloods.

Park with careDrivers are being urged to not park on the median strip in Waverley Street near St Mary’s Primary School in Scone, particularly during drop off and pick up times.

Council has implemented centre of the road median parking restrictions in Waverley Street for the length of the school bus zone between Short Street and Gundy Road with ‘no stopping’ during 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm and 4pm.

Parking on the median strip in this area will be permissible outside of these time restrictions, once the necessary signage is erected.

There will also be ‘no stopping’ between Short Street and the entry into St Mary’s Primary School staff carpark during normal school zone time restrictions.

While it is technically illegal to park on median strips in the middle of roads, the changes being implemented by Council relate only to an 85 metre section of Waverley Street.

Once the necessary signs are erected in the coming days the new restrictions will be enforced by police and Council Rangers, who, where required, can issue penalty notices and fi nes.
